Great Expectations

Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

        I could get a 4.0 keeper and save the 0.5 - you're right.

On the other hand I am not 100% Ederson plays the first GW, and City got 'tough' fixtures in GW 1,8,10 & 12. Watford got superb fixtures in GW 1,8, 10 and 12 😉

But could do Bailly -> Smalling if I saved the 0.5 on the second keeper spot.

I think United will struggle this season. The only strong fixture on paper is GW1, so if they let you down you'll be tempted to transfer their players out.

Just didn Salah > Sanchez for a GW1 captain option who's less expensive. But who knows what I'll end up with.

I really fancy Mata at the moment, but he doesn't fit into my current team. I have 6 cheaper players who I'm currently happy with, but it means I've ignored all the 6.0-7.5 options.

Might find a place for Mata so he can be moved on to the best 6.0-6.5 option after 2-3 weeks.

Arnie great form but very tough fixtures throughout the first GWs.
Currently I am on Zaha, Mkhi and Richarlison, I think Mkhi offers great value at 7.0m and can positively surprise against both City and Chelsea

Zaha if he stays will be in.
        Pedro I'm worried about starting.
Wood doesn't seem to be scoring so far but finished the season well.
I've gone off Tosun and just having rich.

Yes! They score most goals no matter who they play. You should have three IMO. The big question is who? Probably two attacking players at least.

Completely mad. They play the 6 most recently promoted sides, 4 of them at home. They scored 106 PL goals last season. It doesn't matter if they're not nailed, If you own Aguero/Sane/Mahrez and they start 4 of 6 they'll outscore the alternatives at their price.

I suppose this is a very good point.

Yes. Too high scoring a team not to have attackers. They, and pool, score a lot. I’d have 4-6 between these 2 teams, especially with easy early games.

    A) Eriksen, Coleman
    B) Alexis, Jagielka
    C) Suggestions? What do we think of Lucas Moura?

Thing I find interesting from this (not from an FPL point of view) is that he's playing Pereira further back than McTominay. Seems a little odd to me!

Played there for Valencia last season. Looked good in the last game.

Might just be my lack on knowledge, but always thought he was a CAM/wide player. Didn't associate him as a holding midfielder at all. But fair play!

You are right, it's not his position.

Don't think Darmian is starting either. No fbs.

Salah, Sanchez, Richarlison, Cairney (Chalobah) is my current midfield.

I'm happy with it, but wondering whether the 4.0m gap between Sanchez and Richarlison may make it hard to jump on any 8.0-9.0m midfield bandwagons early on without hits or leaving millions in the bank? Haven't had a gap as large as that before in a position group!

    Many thanks in advance!

If you think that Sanchez outscores the 9.5s by 10.5%, and you can't find a good upgrade in absolute points potential for the million elsewhere, then it's fine. You can always downgrade Sanchez and use the £ elsewhere so I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you've spent wisely in attack/defence.

To be fair, I only have Sanchez for the first two matches, with the intention of him either doing really well, or knowing I can straight swap to KdB after a few weeks, who I'll certainly want.

Probably not much point in changing the team you think is optimal, just to have the right price brackets. Worse comes to worst you'll have a few quid in the bank for a week

Thoughts on my team for this year

    Pickford
    Rico - Cedric - Masina
Deulofeu - Hazard - De Bruyne - Salah - Costa
    Kane - Zaha

    Subs - Speroni - Wan-bissaka - Maguire - Kamara

    Any help grateful

    Cheers

Salah + Kane teams will struggle.
