Chris Wood (£6.5m) has the opportunity to be a cost-effective third striker in Fantasy Premier League this season.

His underlying data suggests that a clear run in the team without injuries that restricted him in 2017/18 can bring out his best.

In our latest Great Expectations piece we assess the case for trusting Wood with a place in our squads.

TOP CLARET

Our recent research into the Burnley squad showed that Wood is the club’s most dangerous goal threat for 2018/19. In the most recent campaign, no Clarets player averaged more shots in the box per game (1.5), touched the ball as many times in the penalty area (3.1) or had a higher goal conversion (25.6) than the New Zealand international. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was the only one of his team-mates to average more shots, but Wood still outscored him 10 league goals to nine.

STRONG FINISH

In the back-end of last season, Wood was boasting form that kept pace with some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters. After recovering from a knee injury to return in Gameweek 29, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) found the net more often than the Burnley man’s six times. Even more impressive was that Wood achieved that feat in fewer starts too, his seven comparing with Vardy’s nine and Aubameyang’s 10.

Over the aforementioned period, Wood ranked seventh for shots, was joint third for efforts on target and joint-fourth for goal conversion among players who had taken at least 10 shots. But crucially, only Aubameyang was afforded more big chances out of forwards.

CLEAR RUN

Wood’s first season at Turf Moor did not exactly run smoothly. Two injuries throughout the campaign limited him to just 24 starts, but a break over the summer has helped him get back to full fitness – in time to assist Sam Vokes (£5.5m) against Aberdeen in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Barnes has struggled with blisters over pre-season allowing Wood to string together some early consistency in the team.

Having a full season of starts in Lancashire should unlock Wood’s potential, considering his minutes per goal data from 2017/18 was so impressive. He averaged a goal every 163.3 minutes, almost the same as Vardy’s 162.8, who finished as the second-highest scoring forward in FPL. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) were among the bigger names below Wood in this respect, with 179.3 and 185.1 minutes per goal respectively.

The only thing to be wary of is that Burnley’s involvement in Europe could trigger more rotation at Turf Moor than before, although manager Sean Dyche tends to avoid it where he can.

RUB OF THE GREEN

Burnley have a very favourable start to the 2018/19 season when it comes to the fixtures, which can often prove a factor in having a good overall season. With the exception of Manchester United in Gameweek 4, every match in the first eight Gameweeks for the Clarets is against a team that finished outside of the Premier League’s top 10 last season. Watford, Bournemouth and Huddersfield will all come to Turf Moor, as will United, while trips to Southampton, Fulham, Wolves and Cardiff could all yield goals for Burnley and Wood.

Richarlison is really popular on here. It feels like I should be wanting him more than I do. What am I missing?

He was good for a spell last year.
He’s reunited with his old coach where he did well.
There is a wildfire mentality on boards.
Everton have an easy ish opening schedule
I don’t have him myself. I’ve considered it though.

Sure. I listed pros, and herd effect. One con is that Everton are not doing well of late in preseason, and they made need time for newcomers to gel. Rich also has a baps problem with missed shots. To me, that minor. Salah had a baps problem too. As if...

I'm with you. In my opinion, it is about what Richarlison is missing.

      The answer is "bonus points".

I'm an Evertonian, and I'm avoiding all our players because we are a mess. Richarlison the only one worth considering atm, but I'm urging caution with Everton generally. Could be a similar start to last year.

At least if things go awfully, he's a very easy transfer to another 6.5. Not an awkward price point at all.

        Interesting perspective.

Everton have some quality players, but seem to be lacking a team. Fingers crossed Silva finds a solution for you guys.

Funny you say that. Most of what I've seen people say before today was what a terrible signing he was. He gets into really dangerous positions, offers an aerial threat which isn't the case for most wingers, should be nailed on and has good fixtures. A good a shout as any at that price imo.

I didn't realise Everton were playing 433. Thanks.

Thought they would build around Siggy as a #10.

Richarlison gets fouled inside the box; Sigurdsson converts the penalty. I'm sure people will own both at some point during the season 😉

Had a quick look. They have played the 4231 most frequently, and in the most recent games. They have played 433 in a couple of halves, and a 442 in one game.

Jota doesn't get into the kind of position that Richarlison does; plus no other winger is as physically strong as he is.

The only downside is his finishing because of which he loses out on BAPS but that could well change this season after a nice summer break.

Yes, in my opinion both are great options at 6.5m. Currently on Richarlison mainly due to fixtures.

I think it will be important to monitor Pedro. If he's nailed he could be a good midfield choice at that price.

I might look at getting Lacazette and upgrading the rest of my team when the World Cup players are all back and I'm playing the wildcard. but for now I'll stick with Aubameyang.

If there's one thing last season thought me, it's that a good start is vital. I think Aubameyang will outscore Lacazette early on.

I really wouldn’t worry based on pre season. They’ve got great fixtures, some very good players and he’s an attacking threat as well as clean sheet possibility.
If they are leaking goals after 2/3 games then worry, but he’s a very good option I’d say.

    Posted earlier. Auba vs Laca:

Laca since 2013/14 season: 130 goals in 221 appearances = 0.59 goals per appearance
Auba since 2013/14 season: 151 goals in 227 appearances = 0.66 goals per appearance

Excluding penalties (17 pens in that total for Auba., 25 pens in that toal for Laca):

Laca since 2013/14 season: 105 goals in 221 appearances = 0.47 goals per appearance
Auba since 2013/14 season: 134 goals in 227 appearances = 0.59 goals per appearance

Fairly similar. So for me it comes down to who is going to get more chances and who has penalties.

Auba will start every game. Laca won't.

Do you also have their assists stats? Aubameyang probably shades it

    How's this looking?

    Pickford
    Alex-Arnold - Zappacosta - Tomkins - Maguire
Sessegnon - Sane - De Bruyne - Richarlison
    Firmino - Kane

    Speroni - Arnautovic - Masuaku - Saiss

Considering past history there is strong chance I will wildcard in 3-4 weeks. Yet selecting players as if I’m doing for 15 weeks !!

Anyone considering going with both Laca & Auba up front? A lot of posts liking both but not together seemingly.

For the first 2 GWs I think one of Mkhi, Auba and Laca is enough. From GW3 onwards it is in fact a thing to consider I guess!

I’m not starting with either but from gwk 3 onwards both is definitely a possibility

I have both. I also hold no allegiance to any particular team.

Is Jorginho a waste of £5.0m or will he get bonus points and assists.

Who is better value for £5.0m?

Dont sr much coming from him. Think he will even sit deeper than Kante. Cairney a better option

Neves (Wolves), Costa (Wolves), Cairney (Fulham) are good options at 5m in my opinion

Newcastle battered 0-0 by Porto. Saved by Dubravka & Darlow. Newcastle GK could be gold this season once fixtures improve

Considering Bailly or Shaw to start, but I am increasingly unsure about it.

      Bailly nailed in your opinion?
