Mohamed Salah’s already high ownership is on the rise, furthering the case for Fantasy Premier League managers to include him in their squads even if they are uncertain about his new price.

We also saw some big transfer fluctuations in the goalkeeper position in the last seven days while large numbers of managers persist in owning assets unlikely to be involved in Gameweek 1.

Such decisions could allow for an opportunity to make real headway on the majority of rivals in the early part of the season.

GOALKEEPERS

Fantasy managers are already moving fast to replace Nick Pope (£5.0m) in their squads after the Burnley man sustained a shoulder injury at Aberdeen on Thursday night. A week ago he was one of the most popular goalkeepers on 17 percent ownership but recent developments have caused that figure to drop to just 6.8.

Moving in the opposite direction is new Liverpool signing Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who has amassed 9.9 percent backing in his first week as an FPL option.

Julian Speroni (£4.0m) has emerged as the most fashionable goalkeeper in the cheapest bracket with 14.8 percent opting to save some money on him. However, the Argentinian is believed to be third in the Crystal Palace pecking order behind Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m). It’s possible that his popularity increased this week to accommodate an upgrade from Pope to Alisson.

David De Gea (£6.0m), Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) have remained largely stable as the top three, with 30.1, 23.0 and 21.6 percent ownership respectively.

DEFENDERS

We should expect to see plenty of fluctuation before Gameweek 1 when it comes to defenders, considering that four of the top five most-owned have some form of question mark over them.

Despite still being absent from their respective pre-season training camps, Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) still hold down the top two spots in this classification.

Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) is the most popular option likely to play in Gameweek 1 with 17.0 percent backing. However, his starting berth will be at risk in Gameweek 4 after new Bournemouth signing Diego Rico (£4.5m) returns from his three-match suspension.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains steady on 16.8 percent ownership and certainly looks more assured of game-time than he did before Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly, in which he started. However, he was replaced by Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) at half-time and Alonso should be considered very much under review considering that Maurizio Sarri prefers to play with traditional full-backs.

Just below Alonso is another Gameweek 1 doubt in Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m). The Liverpool man was once the most fashionable defender in the whole game but following England’s continued progression at the World Cup, he dropped to third last week and now comes in as the fifth-most owned stopper. Although his backing is still fairly sizeable with 16.1 percent invested in him, both Nathaniel Clyne (£5.0m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m) look likely to threaten Alexander-Arnold’s pitch time.

Despite more doubts hanging over whether he will feature for Huddersfield this season, Scott Malone has actually extended his lead at the top of the £4.0m defender ownership charts. From what we’ve seen so far, the most likely to start from that price point is Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and some Fantasy managers are slowly picking up on that. In the last seven days he has gone from 2.6 percent ownership to 3.9.

MIDFIELDERS

Mohamed Salah’s (£13.0m) return to action has extended his lead as the most popular player ahead of the 2018/19 season. In one week the Egyptian has added a further 2.6 percent of managers to his following. The more his ownership increases the more dangerous it could become to go without last season’s record-breaking top scorer, regardless of his hiked price.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) still sits in second place remaining stable in 27 percent of squads, even though he is still absent from Manchester City’s pre-season training squad and could miss Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s (£7.0m) price and potential has him as the third-most popular still, although he has experienced a two percent drop-off in the last seven days. He may pick up more backing from Fantasy managers if De Bruyne is confirmed as absent in the build-up for the opening weekend.

Also likely to mop up some De Bruyne sellers on the eve of 2018/19’s first match is his Man City colleague Leroy Sané (£9.5m), who already has one summer pre-season goal under his belt. He sits just behind Mkhitaryan on 18.8 percent ownership.

Deep-lying midfielders Ruben Neves (£5.0m) and N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) are both in the top 10 most-owned in their classification, despite relatively low potential for Fantasy returns. Meanwhile, options in the same price bracket like Aaron Lennon, Kenedy and Helder Costa, all of whom play in more advanced positions, have just 0.5, 3.4 and 1.0 percent ownership respectively.

FORWARDS

Marko Arnautovic’s (£7.0m) recent form has seen him jump back into the top four most-owned among forwards. Seven days ago, the Austrian had been overtaken by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)’s 24 percent, who has five pre-season goals. Arnautovic has found the net four times in three matches triggering a small rise back to 25 percent ownership.

At the top of the forwards charts, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) remain stable on 37 and 33 percent respectively. The large number of managers invested in the pair will need to pay close attention to our Scout Notes for the remainder of pre-season to see if either of them will be available for Gameweek 1 following World Cup campaigns.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) is still the third-most popular striker with 31.2 percent ownership, despite his switch from midfield over the summer.

Any 4.0 GK, doesn't really matter.

Wan-Bissaka most nailed 4.0 DF. Maybe Peltier too.

Someone else on the Auba & Laca double up. Like it.

Bench isn't brilliant (but then most teams aren't), worry would be if Peltier doesn't start.

I don't think there's a need to waste 2.5m to improve the bench. A bit but nor that much, otherwise you're just benching serious cash.

I generally get ignored on original posts, so be it (no small violins here) but I fancy Arsenal to beat City, and can see them scoring at Chelsea. Then their fixtures are awesome.

I was thinking about a post that Deulofale made earlier today about ownership and managers picking players just because they are highly owned and it got me thinking.

I decided to turn the concept on its head and and done a draft without fear that actively sought out players with low ownership and are pretty nailed in the short to medium term at least.

What i came up with was intriguing, all the squad were under 5% ownership and in fact 9 players were under 1% ownership and i was left with a cool £11.5m itb.I think i really fancy my bunch of unwanted to give the template a run for their money.

You should give this a go,build from the bottom up say.I think you will be pleasantly surprised with how good a team you could put together.

I would like to but i am locked in mortal combat with with some other posters here in a minileague and i might just start with this team or at the very least some of the players on it and as they say in poker i do not want to show my hand.

Give it a go yourself, it is not that hard.

Ok will do, but no way will you be brave enough to start the season with a squad leaving 11.5M in the bank

The other problem with revealing it is that people will probably have strong opinions about a couple of the picks being poor options, and other people will dislike other picks, and then this'll add up to more average dislike (hatin') than on a high ownership team, which adds to the pressure of picking something more template. Ownership breeds ownership.

After all, you're looking for advice on here, so if you heed the average advice, you could end up with the FFS most owned players. On another site you would end up with a slightly different template, I expect, but still based on ownership.

If you do share it, you gotta be willing to engage critical thinking mode to disentangle the good/valid advice from the unfounded myths and biased responses (often biased by ownership itself).

From what i have seen with people commenting on RMTs on here Deulofale is that most will disagree with a pick just because they do not have than player in their own team.

I am confidant that i can pick a decent FPL team under these conditions and i think you could do a dam good job of it yourself if you give it a try.

              I don;t copy templates Deulofale i make them. 😉

Haha yeah for sure. If people had the energy there would write X + X + X + X + X + X + X + X > + Y + Y + Y + Y + Y + Y + Y on every RMT, where the Ys are the players they personally own. I like to try and tailor my advice to the poster by giving them little things to consider with rationale, rather than listing which players I like the most.

Repeating the list of you favourite players increases the ownership of those players, though, as others heed your advice and add the players to their list of favourites and begin to spout the same names and speil to others as if they were their own conclusions. So without engaging with RMT posters on a more personal level, ownership will simply breed ownership. It's an inherent losing battle until the communication platform changes 🙂

      Well gi'us a peek.

I'd say that in the main the crowd wisdom on this site and FPL is 80% sensible, so I'd expect a line up that has no popular picks to be pretty rubbish, but I'm prepared to be corrected.

FWIW I've knocked up a draft I won't use with the criteria of no Salah and no City. I quite like it!!

They're not for me but the reason is price. AWB appears to be the only 4m starting defender and he might not keep his place. Moving up to 4.5m there are a range of secure starters of whom these guys are examples, and they have an easy set of early fixtures.

Paying 5.5 for Everton defence is ridiculous imo

Bailly nailed at the start and is by far their best CB so should pay every week but Mou is Mou...

The picks I don't like are PVA and Coleman. I really don't see why you'd go for 5.5 defenders from EVE and CPL when there are 4.5s available.

Also I have none of those forwards. How come you're set on those three? I'd personally prefer an Arsenal forward.

Still, I'm being pick, and over all it's a good team.

That is a very good team. Lowton over Mee for me the only change I'd make

One of my drafts is (I guess) relatively similar.

      Ederson
      Bailly; Robertson; Tomkins
      Richarlison; Salah; Mane; Costa; Eriksen
      Aguero; Zaha

Recently did Bailly in and Coleman out.

I would prioritize having Arsenal players at GW3 maximum.

      Thoughts?

Why has Mane suddenly started taking penalties?
Salah was good at taking penalties.
Is it just pre season or any idea he would keep taking it for the entire season ?
    Any thoughts on the same?

Neither have been regular takers in their career, Salah scored one and missed one in the prem last season and other than that has only taken 5 in his career all for Egypt. Mane has two competitive penalties in his career one scored one missed. With regular taker Milner not looking like starting id say mane taking in pre season is pretty good evidence that he will be first choice taker

I think Fabinho is due to be the designated penalty taker.

Not sure I've ever found it so hard to pick a long term team that will have 11 starters in gw1.

    Think i've finally decided on:

    Allison Fabianski

    Mendy VanAanholt Cedric AlexanderArnold (WanBissaka)

    Salah Mahrez Jota Sessegnon (Kennedy)

    Kane Zaha (Kamara)

    1. polis
      • 15 Years

      - No point in a 4.5m keeper if you have Allison as you won't bench him.
      - Mendy possible rotation.
      - TAA rotation with Clyne (who's been preferred in pre-season it seams).
      - Mahrez possibly injured.
      - Sessegnon may be LB based on Schurrle being LM.
      - Kamara won't play.

  30. AndyCook

Arsenal in a 4-2-3-1 presumably would be 2 of Ramsey, Xhaka, Torreira begins Ozil and then Mkhitaryan and Aubamyeang either side of Lacazette or in a 4-3-3 Ozil would be wide at the expense of Lacazette to accompany all three of the deeper lying mids. I can’t see how Lacazette is nailed?

    1. AndyCook
      8 years, 1 month ago

Or would Mkhi drop out and Ozil wide right with Auba wide left?
