Mohamed Salah’s already high ownership is on the rise, furthering the case for Fantasy Premier League managers to include him in their squads even if they are uncertain about his new price.

We also saw some big transfer fluctuations in the goalkeeper position in the last seven days while large numbers of managers persist in owning assets unlikely to be involved in Gameweek 1.

Such decisions could allow for an opportunity to make real headway on the majority of rivals in the early part of the season.

GOALKEEPERS

Fantasy managers are already moving fast to replace Nick Pope (£5.0m) in their squads after the Burnley man sustained a shoulder injury at Aberdeen on Thursday night. A week ago he was one of the most popular goalkeepers on 17 percent ownership but recent developments have caused that figure to drop to just 6.8.

Moving in the opposite direction is new Liverpool signing Alisson Becker (£5.5m) who has amassed 9.9 percent backing in his first week as an FPL option.

Julian Speroni (£4.0m) has emerged as the most fashionable goalkeeper in the cheapest bracket with 14.8 percent opting to save some money on him. However, the Argentinian is believed to be third in the Crystal Palace pecking order behind Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m). It’s possible that his popularity increased this week to accommodate an upgrade from Pope to Alisson.

David De Gea (£6.0m), Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) have remained largely stable as the top three, with 30.1, 23.0 and 21.6 percent ownership respectively.

DEFENDERS

We should expect to see plenty of fluctuation before Gameweek 1 when it comes to defenders, considering that four of the top five most-owned have some form of question mark over them.

Despite still being absent from their respective pre-season training camps, Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) still hold down the top two spots in this classification.

Charlie Daniels (£4.5m) is the most popular option likely to play in Gameweek 1 with 17.0 percent backing. However, his starting berth will be at risk in Gameweek 4 after new Bournemouth signing Diego Rico (£4.5m) returns from his three-match suspension.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains steady on 16.8 percent ownership and certainly looks more assured of game-time than he did before Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly, in which he started. However, he was replaced by Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) at half-time and Alonso should be considered very much under review considering that Maurizio Sarri prefers to play with traditional full-backs.

Just below Alonso is another Gameweek 1 doubt in Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.0m). The Liverpool man was once the most fashionable defender in the whole game but following England’s continued progression at the World Cup, he dropped to third last week and now comes in as the fifth-most owned stopper. Although his backing is still fairly sizeable with 16.1 percent invested in him, both Nathaniel Clyne (£5.0m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m) look likely to threaten Alexander-Arnold’s pitch time.

Despite more doubts hanging over whether he will feature for Huddersfield this season, Scott Malone has actually extended his lead at the top of the £4.0m defender ownership charts. From what we’ve seen so far, the most likely to start from that price point is Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and some Fantasy managers are slowly picking up on that. In the last seven days he has gone from 2.6 percent ownership to 3.9.

MIDFIELDERS

Mohamed Salah’s (£13.0m) return to action has extended his lead as the most popular player ahead of the 2018/19 season. In one week the Egyptian has added a further 2.6 percent of managers to his following. The more his ownership increases the more dangerous it could become to go without last season’s record-breaking top scorer, regardless of his hiked price.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) still sits in second place remaining stable in 27 percent of squads, even though he is still absent from Manchester City’s pre-season training squad and could miss Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s (£7.0m) price and potential has him as the third-most popular still, although he has experienced a two percent drop-off in the last seven days. He may pick up more backing from Fantasy managers if De Bruyne is confirmed as absent in the build-up for the opening weekend.

Also likely to mop up some De Bruyne sellers on the eve of 2018/19’s first match is his Man City colleague Leroy Sané (£9.5m), who already has one summer pre-season goal under his belt. He sits just behind Mkhitaryan on 18.8 percent ownership.

Deep-lying midfielders Ruben Neves (£5.0m) and N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) are both in the top 10 most-owned in their classification, despite relatively low potential for Fantasy returns. Meanwhile, options in the same price bracket like Aaron Lennon, Kenedy and Helder Costa, all of whom play in more advanced positions, have just 0.5, 3.4 and 1.0 percent ownership respectively.

FORWARDS

Marko Arnautovic’s (£7.0m) recent form has seen him jump back into the top four most-owned among forwards. Seven days ago, the Austrian had been overtaken by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)’s 24 percent, who has five pre-season goals. Arnautovic has found the net four times in three matches triggering a small rise back to 25 percent ownership.

At the top of the forwards charts, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) remain stable on 37 and 33 percent respectively. The large number of managers invested in the pair will need to pay close attention to our Scout Notes for the remainder of pre-season to see if either of them will be available for Gameweek 1 following World Cup campaigns.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) is still the third-most popular striker with 31.2 percent ownership, despite his switch from midfield over the summer.

Is it really shocking? Those 4 cost me a combined 18mil and each posses an attacking threat as well as cheap clean sheet. Plus they allow me to have triple pool attack as well as Kane and Aubameyang.

The fact that Ralls is your 3rd best MID seems really bad. Bench is weak, Defense is weak. Too much invested in FWDs. At the very least, you should downgrade Kane to Aguero and upgrade Ralls.

Probably the safest set-and-forget 4.5, yeah. Other more hit-and-miss options who might return but are less nailed. depends what you want / where they'll be on your bench.

              Mendy a rotation risk
De Gea probably not the best value at 6m
Mata a transfer out waiting to happen
              Aguero a rotation risk

"I'm still waiting for the best Morata," Sarri said.
"In the first match [against Perth Glory] Morata did not play very well, in Australia.
"But tonight, especially in the first 30 minutes, he improved a lot. I am satisfied and I am very confident in him for the future."

Sarri says he's very confident in Morata for the future. He also barely rotates so I doubt he would be playing Giroud every other week. Morata an option at 9m?

Lots of players do not do well in the PL during their first season and kick on the greater things during their second and Morata could be that guy.

            1. stat
                7 years, 8 months ago

The only problem is whether he'll start over Giroud, but I'm guessing that it's likely because Morata is a much more mobile striker.

I would fancy him to be first choice too.

At the very least he is pretty nailed for the first few games.Like Sarri he also caught my eye in the first half of that game.

I like it - have had similar drafts. I'm currently on Firmino as my 9.5, though, because if I'm pretty sure he's going to start GW1, I'd rather have a look at Arsenal before committing. But very much have my eye on Laca going forward. Oh, and I'm an Evertonian and we are currently a mess, so don't expect CS returns from Coleman. Good luck.

Madness to go with Auba and Laca?

First two fixtures aren't amazing but can see Arsenal beating City given the WC players missing for City (have backed this at 14/5) and can see Arsenal scoring at Chelsea.

              Then those fixtures are ripe...

It's a cop out but Aguero is surely the most nailed at the start the season attack wise.

Otherwise, would think Sane & Mahrez (if that knock isn't more than just a knock).

i know what you are talking about, and i do understand the uneasyness of it but a world class player doesn't lose all of his attributes towards the game after a move from a giant club to another, Mourinho is a big cause i guess but even then the quality Sanchez is presenting has rapidity dropped since the switch. wouldn't mind the old Sanchez back.

                        Yeah, it re-started automatically.
Never know, the opportunity re-form might appear during the season.

Every season people play their Wildcards early and say that they will get the price rises etc. and it never happens.

I know because I've done it. Wildcarding for value early doesn't work and if you disagree you're wrong and should feel bad.

Last season was slower than the previous season for price changes. If there are a similar number of players (~5M) or a few more, I don't think they'd change the algorithms.

I just think Salah as a nailed on C choice is the go.

People seem to forget how regularly Aguero was rotated and it is not like he's back training already...

tried to hold off salah because of price, but had to cave in today. if(probably) he get a goal+ in the first week and it will be catching up from day one which i rather want to avoid.

Very hard to choose from Eriksen, Mané and Sané. I have Sané at the moment due to having salah and firmino but like the look of Eriksen but have read that he may play in a deeper role which then may take some appeal away. Mane on the other hand looks like could be on pens and still a good option regardless. Just wondered what people’s take is on this trio?

I had all three in my draft yesterday but ultimately got rid of Sane because he has barely featured in pre-season, and because he will be benched if Pep goes with 3-5-2.

Yeah. to start the season it's a very tough call, that. I would say, though, that their total point scores come May will be in the order you have written them.

                    Kolasinac is a rotation risk.
Emery tends to rotate his full backs and Monreal is a much better LB than Kolasinac.

Just rumors so far. If he is sold then we'll surely replace him, so Kolasinac will still probably be a rotation risk.

Got a little inspired after reading the HT's of MikeHarbrew.
One thing i think that often goes unmentioned when talking about FPL, is the effect of the minuspoints for goals conceded. For some players, these points severily handicaps their points total at the end of the season. Some of them, so much so, that even with healthy amounts of CS's (10-12), they struggle to offer good value. There's a reason that burnleydefenders were a lot better assets compared to other 4,5-players. But this was'nt due to CS's imo, it was due to burnleyplayers receiving far less minuspoints. Brighton, Huddersfield and West Brom all kept 10 CS's, Burnley kept 11. Yet, Burnley were the only club with defenders averaging more than 3pts pr game, with Bruno being the only exception, as Brighton kept all their CS's in the 25 games he played.

So, here it goes, 2017/2018 minuspoints table

                      Club -1 -2 -3 total
                      Man City 3 1 0 -5
                      Burnley 7 1 0 -9
                      Man United 9 0 -9
                      Chelsea 9 1 0 -11
                      Liverpool 7 2 0 -11
                      Spurs 7 2 0 -11
                      Newcastle 11 1 0 -13
                      Arsenal 16 1 0 -18
                      Crystal Palace 12 3 0 -18
                      Soton 14 2 0 -18
                      Brighton 14 3 0 -20
                      Everton 10 5 0 -20
                      West Brom 16 2 0 -20
                      Huddersfield 13 4 0 -21
                      Swansea 9 6 0 -21
                      Bournemouth 14 4 0 -22
                      Leicester 14 4 0 -22
                      Stoke 15 3 1 -24
                      Watford 13 4 1 -24
                      West Ham 12 7 -26

                        Man City (-5) v West Ham (-26)
Goes to show the added value of not getting minuspoints. 21pts equals, roughly, 5 extra CS's.

The average team leaks to the effect of 17,15 minuspoints, meaning only 7 teams performed better than the average.

It certainly demonstrates the potential benefit of having a Burnley defender if they can keep things as tight as they did last year.

Realised the table ended up looking really shitty, whats prob most worth noting is the last number connected to each club.

                      RMT if you could:

                      Ryan (Speroni)

                      VVD / Lowton / Daniels (Cedric / Wan-Biss)

                      Salah / Mane / Sane / Mkhitaryan / Neves

                      Lacazette / Arnautovic (Austin)

                      1.0 in the bank currently.

Strategy early doors is to go with sure bets and avoid any World Cup hangover players.....

Ederson is in most teams I see on here yet he hasn't even returned to training yet and may not play GW1 which is strange
