With just over a week to go until the 2018/19 season begins, Watford players aren’t proving to be popular purchases in the Fantasy Premier League community.

The Hornets are one of only two clubs – the other being newly promoted Cardiff City – who don’t have a single player with an FPL ownership of 5% or more.

This isn’t a huge shock, looking at last season’s figures: the Hertfordshire club had the third-worst defensive record in the top flight and only one of their players – central midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (£6.0m) – scored more than five league goals. Richarlison, meanwhile, departed for Everton last week.

Javi Gracia’s side are third-favourites for relegation with some bookmakers and their form from Gameweek 14 onwards last season – the Hornets won more matches (six) before this point than they did in their remaining 25 games (five) – was that of a team fighting the drop.

Watford’s opening three fixtures this season are enticing, however: home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace sandwich the Hornets’ trip to Burnley, who could be in UEFA Europa League action either side of that encounter.

Encouraging underlying defensive statistics, the pre-season form of Andre Gray (£6.0m) and a tactical system that encourages their full-backs to attack are worthy of note, too – all of which we will expand on in the article below.

In-depth data on Watford’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

    Anyone else flip-flopping regarding Arnautovic?

On one hand I see him banging in the goals in pre-season, but then I think about him potentially moving back into midfield and being outscored by quite a few defenders last season (after you remove his 'extra' clean sheet and GS points).

Anyone have any arguments either way to add?

why would he be moved back? He is the best striker at the club, has played there all of pre-season and is a goal machine since the end of last season. In the end of the day he costs 7mil, you cant really expect 30 goals

Any evidence to moving back into midfield? Makes no sense to me when he carried west ham last year up front

In pre-season Pellers is developing a killer system with Yarmo and Anderson flanking Arnie.

No, as he has proven he can operate so well as a striker since the switch. who would take his place ? West Ham have not brought in a striker. Relax and enjoy his points at that price.

Your basing this points tally thing on a season where he changed position halfway through. I think he’s the best 7m option in the game by a long shot.

Managed to get PvA & Jahanbakhsh in my draft. Very pleased with that considering I just had to wait 29 picks for them. They were my 6th and 7th picks. Team now is taking shape.

Salah, King, Wood, Azpi, Jota, PvA, Jahanbakhsh

        Ederson,
        Robbo, Luiz, Mendy
        Neves, Salah, Mane, Sane, Pedro
        Lacazette, Arnie.

        4.0 - WanB, Peltier, Quaner.

        0.5itd ready for KDB.

I feel like I need to upgrade that bench don't I? Maybe Peltier to a 4.5 defender. Where in my team would you get that 0.5?

Wouldn't be sure if Luiz starts. Mendy may not either given he's just back from a long term injury. Man a redundant pick with Salah in there. Neves isn't gonna get many points. Pedro far from nailed.

I'd say so, Could be worse, however.

Sorry, just gotta share this somewhere:
Full time just called on my team Inverness Caley Thistle.
We've won 16-0. The opposition was Highland League perennial basement dwellers Fort William. On Saturday they kicked off their league campaign with an 11-1 loss. Hilarious and ridiculous in equal measures!

I see people slating the likes of Richarlison because he's a streaky player and he's going to 'flop'.

The way I see it he is the most likely to perform and has the highest ceiling for that price bracket.

Imo people need to realise players like this are priced at 6.5 etc becuase they are less likely to deliver compared to 9.5 ers eg Mane

Thanks for that Sherlock. Maybe better to compare the records of players at the same price point, such as Jota or Milivojivic.

the point is that too many people are expecting too much of a return from their cheap players, eg if Rich blanked after 2 games, nearly everyone would be transferring him out.

A return every 3 games would be a good output for a 6.5m mid

                  • 13 Years
                  7 years, 4 months ago

Okay, I get that. For me the 6.5m price-point at mid and fwd is a dead-zone. I go for premium assets and a bit of dead wood that I'm expecting nothing from such as a 4.5 def or 5m mid.

I'm coming more to the conclusion that one needs to think outside the box when picking a team. This season more than any other I think 3 man defense by and large is the way to go even tho others seem to disagree.

Anyone have any plan/template that they stick to ??

Sticking to something that will probably change is never clever action.

          Here is my 3rd draft

          Patricio / Fabri

          Robbo, TAA, Bailly, Davies, WBA
          Salah, Mahrez, Ramsey, Richarlison, Hughes
          Kun, King, Kamara
          1.5 itb

I want both Mendy and TAA, and Davies is a place holder for the previous. 1.5 itb is flexible, it gives me even Kun to Kane if needed.

Good team. But could be improved aswell.
I'm sticking to nothing, but I'm evaluating everything, to stay ahead in my league again this year. I have a system that I discovered last season and I'm sticking with it this year as it helped me top my league last season.

One bit of advice check the stats and then change Richarlison to a cheaper midfielder to upgrade Kamara to wood or Zaha.

My plan is to play a mix of

          5-3-2
          4-4-2
          3-5-2

I’ve picked Kamara. He’s fodder. I’m sticking to it. The 2.5m saving gives me flexibilty without having to make transfers. I can make the transfers I want, not have to make. 14 90% nailed starters all in top 6 teams or key players for other teams.

This year I’m not going near the 6-7.5m strikers... (WC GW3 to go to 3-4-3)

For the PPM system to work they need to be playing and performing in line with history.

I’m not confident enough that Zaha or Arnautovic will perform in line with last year AND get the minutes.

I don’t have the skill, patience or luck to spot the next one either.

But they are both the best players in their respective clubs. Why would they not get the minutes ?
Arnie and Zaha are under priced as they did not move into their striker position until Christmas and GW30 respectively. Imagine if Zaha was playing Striker all season instead of moving there in GW30, he would have potentially (injury free) scored 180 to 200 points and would be priced at 9 to 10m this season.

I guess I think it’s a purple patch that’ll end or not even start this season.

I don’t think Palace and West Ham aren’t very good.

I’m not convinced these two players are that good either.

                  Time will tell.

If someone could compare these Sanchez+Salah set-ups that'd be amazing

        A.
        Foster
        Mendy - VVD - Cedric
        Sanchez - Salah - Mane - Rich - Cairney
        Aguero - Arnie

        4.0 - 4.0 - 4.0 - 4.5 ST

        B.
        Ederson
        VVD - Cedric - Kabasele
        Sanchez - Salah - Mane - Cairney
        Aguero - Arnie - Zaha

        4.0 - 4.5 mid - 4.0 - 4.0

Tempted towards A but having a playing 4.5 mid rather than a doss 4.5 FW could make a big difference in delaying WC? Any thoughts?

          B. But I'm not sold on Sanchez. Lukaku hasn't seen great return in FPL since his United switch. Haz is a better option when he returns. But anyway good selection. personally I would select B and downgrade Mane to Pogba and upgrade defence.

Don’t waste your bench boost. I can see how you’ve tried to not overspend but you’ll find yourself in a pickle if you need to make changes. What is Kane starts scoring 2 a week and Zaha gets injured? You’re effed.

Decent team then. Wouldn’t do bench boost though, especially with the uncertainty of starts.

BB is one of the better chips, best used in a double game week.

        Ederson - Button
        VVD - Daniels - Tomkins - Cedric - WB
        Salah - Sanchez - Miki - Richarlison - Gunnarson
        Zaha - Firmino - Morata

opted to Sanchez because I feel there aren't so many nailed forward options- at least for first few fixtures..

Value is in midfielders and not strikers. If you insist on not having Salah then you should be investing the money there and not in your forward three imo

Is a front three of Aubameyang, Firmino and Arnautovic worth it?
Would require a defense of only one 6.0 and three 4.5’s as well as a 4.0 - and a midfield of one 4.5 and two 6.5’s:

        5.0 - Button
        Robertson - Cédric - Peltier - 4.5 - Tomkins
        Salah - Sessegnon - Jota - Sané - 4.5
        Aubameyang - Firmino - Arnautovic

I was putting together a pretty basic spreadsheet earlier, trying to work out whether the worry surrounding Man City rotation is really worth it or if they still come good over a season... And whilst doing that I started to drill down in to the average points for Mids and Forwards, it’s amazing how much more value there is in the mids (and defenders this year)... has made me consider a mid-ranged strikeforce and a premium packed midfield.
