New loan signing Jonny Castro (£4.5m) could increase Wolves’ clean sheet potential in 2018/19 but is unlikely to be as attack-minded as predecessor Barry Douglas.

Fantasy Premier League managers may have to turn to other options in the Wolves defence for goals and clean sheets but Jonny’s presence could bring out the best in his team-mates.

The Spaniard could also do well when it comes to the Bonus Points System.

We’ve had a detailed look at the on-loan Atletico Madrid left-back as we prepare for Gameweek 1…

THE HISTORY

24-year-old Jonny Castro is considered to have been one of the most reliable full-backs in La Liga for the last few years.

Used mostly on the left in a four-man defence at Celta Vigo, he is also capable of playing at right-back or even centre-back if needed. His strengths lie in his tackling, interceptions, strong work ethic and consistency.

During his six-year spell in Vigo’s first team, Jonny garnered experience playing at continental level as well as against Real Madrid and Barcelona on a regular basis. He was part of the group that made it to the Europa League semi-finals in 2016/17, which were knocked out by eventual champions Manchester United.

His reliable form during his Celta Vigo career earned him a permanent move to Atletico Madrid this summer, before a loan move to Wolves was completed earlier this month.

The main reason Jonny hasn’t quite been able to break into the Atletico first team is because of some high-quality competition for places. Left-back Lucas Hernandez has impressed hugely of late and went on to play a big part in winning the World Cup. The Frenchman’s back-up Filipe Luis also featured for Brazil in Russia while the options at right-back in Sime Vrsaljko and Juanfran would be hard for many to displace.

A loan move to Wolves certainly makes sense for all parties, especially with the Midlands club offloading Barry Douglas to Leeds United.

However, expecting Jonny to play a similar role in Nuno Espirito Santo’s team to Douglas would be a naive assumption. In fact, the Spaniard looks to be almost the antithesis of his predecessor. While Douglas was very much the typical modern full-back, making marauding runs up and down the left-flank and whipping balls into the box, Jonny is more the old-fashioned type. He specialises in tackles and interceptions and not much more.

THE PROSPECTS

Jonny Castro is more likely to accrue his Fantasy points through defensive contributions than offensive ones in 2018/19. As you will see from the comparison above, his potential for goals and assists are considerably lower than his new colleagues. Only Ryan Bennett (£4.0m) managed fewer shots per game last season, and it was the same for efforts in the box too.

That’s why he managed just two goals and one assist in 2017/18 while Douglas contributed five and 14 respectively on Wolves’ way to winning the Championship. With the Scot now surprisingly moved on to Leeds United, his opposite number on the right-flank Matt Doherty (£4.5m) easily looks like the most offensive FPL defender on offer from the Wolves squad, with 0.5 shots per game and an average of one chance created. It would be hard for Jonny to match these numbers.

However, where Jonny can excel is improving Wolves’ clean sheet potential, possibly picking up some bonus points along the way. As you will see from the table above, no Wolves defender matched his interceptions per match last season – in fact, his total of 93 was better than any stopper in the Premier League in 2017/18. Meanwhile, only Willy Boly (£4.5m) won more tackles per match and only Conor Coady (£4.5m) and Bennett boasted higher pass completion.

All three of the above statistics count towards the BPS so when Wolves do keep clean sheets, which they would theoretically be more likely to with him in the team, Jonny look set to be one of the beneficiaries for additional points.

The biggest impact Jonny will have on FPL though will probably be to unlock the potential of the more attack-orientated players around him. At both Celta Vigo and in the Spain Under-21s squad he was often used to provide a defensive foundation to allow creative freedom further up the pitch. So at Wolves we could see midfield options such as Ruben Neves (£5.0m) or Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) being more involved in goals and assists knowing Jonny’s strengths. Furthermore, Doherty becomes a more attractive option as his attacking returns will now be backed up by a heightened clean sheet potential.

The only concern for Wolves could be a lack of balance in their 3-4-3 formation. If opposition players know that Jonny is unlikely to venture forward on the left but Doherty will be doing so on the right, there is an obvious area to exploit. If this is something Nuno is worried about he could deploy Jonny in the back-three, where he is capable. However, in his first pre-season appearance for Wolves, the new loan signing was used on the left of midfield.

Anyone doing the FPL Fantasy Draft game?

I’m playing in one tonight and any tips would be great.

Picked quite a punty team last year and wasted quite high picks on Pedro and Mkhitaryan- paid the price for it at the end.

          5 is greedy.
          I will give you one

Prioritise 2 strikers, then 3or4 miss, then one top GK
Leave defs until last and stream cheap defenders with good fixtures all season, don't be afraid to change them every week

If your 3rd pick is Andre Gray you are doing it wrong 🙂
Last year I was 16th pick in a 16 man draft and the only two players i had that I would have on FPL were Vardy and Eriksen.
The rest was all richarlison, Joselu, demari Gray trash
                Still won the league

    3. AndyCook
      7 years, 12 months ago

      I’ll give you 5 tips.

Aim for high priced players who are definitely going to play week in week outs, e.g. Put Aubameyang, Lukaku etc before Aguero, Jesus, Lacazette and leave City mids later than Mane, Hazard etc

Don’t be tempted by the Pedro’s, Martial’s of this world who look like they could do loads but aren’t guaranteed starters until 5th mid.

Leave your 8th attacker last as you can stream that position basically too.

Consider picking pairs of defenders such as Trippier and Aurier

Keep an eye on the good keepers and pick one just as they start to be picked. Same with the top defenders

    (Reposting because reply fail)

Who do you think is the better option for the first few GWs at their prices?

    A) Siggy vs wol, SOU, bou, HUD, WHU, ars
    B) Zaha vs ful, LIV, wat, SOU, hud, NEW

Going to find it hard to turn down Siggy if it turns out that he's on pens, and he should be getting loads of free kicks from Richarlison drawing fouls. Only problem being I have to downgrade someone else by 0.5.

Mendy has been in and out of my drafts, but given the fixtures, is there a case to be made for sticking him in your team and assuming that he'll either start and not be subbed off or not play at all?

For example last season Walker was benched 4 times, and subbed off twice (due to injury vs Arsenal and at the 61st minute vs West Ham towards the end of the season - City had already won the league by then). Following Mendy's injury, Delph was subbed off 6 times, but 3 of those times came after City had won the league, and one of the 3 remaining subs were due to injury.

The only issue is that Mendy has suffered a lot with injuries recently (he also got injured in the summer) so perhaps Pep might be more likely to bring him on as a sub or take him off early if he does start?

I have both Siggy & Morata in my team, both are good value.

Siggy will be well suited to Silva's style, has great FPL pedigree, is entering his prime, and will be on all set pieces now that Digne has signed (who will be ahead of Baines).

Morata is very much under the radar after reviewing his low ownership. Assuming Chelsea dont sign another striker, he will be straight in my team. Sarri seems to like him, and he should get plenty of chances to score given how attacking Sarri's philosophy is.

Looking to WC in GW 5:

For initial weeks, this looks good to me:

    McCarthy
    Robertson Bailly Wan-Bissaka
    Salah Sanchez Mane Richarlison Jota
    Aguero Wood

    Bench: Button,Bednarek,Peltier,Kamara

I am okay going weak in defense as cheap options will emerge to downgrade that heavy midfield and upgrade defenders.

Jota/Pedro is the one that I am not able to decide.

I agree with the last part. Thats the thing that has him out of my latest draft. In general I think wing backs, while rotation risks, are the least likely position to get subbed on when they do get rotated/benched. But Im not so sure with Mendy in particular because hes coming back from injury. He had a lot of 10-20 min cameos at the end of last season, and ACL injuries can take very long to get 100% back to form.

Perhaps Davies could be an option with Rose still away, and linked with a transfer away from Spurs. But I doubt they'd sell him now since there's only 9 days to replace him (assuming that Poch would want a replacement since he likes to rotate his full backs).

Other than that I can't see many nailed on options around 6m, apart from the obvious Robertson, VVD, Azpi (at 6.5)

Yeah you'd be more likely to prepare for one of Mendy's omissions that way. Might not include Mendy and save myself the headache though.

I don't have him for that reason.
I tried to pick fellas that look like they look like they will start fairly certain.

Bailly VVD robertson Tarkowski (Wan-Bissaka) to come on as first sub if Bailly does not start.

I don't rate southampton or mark Hughes at all.
Despite the good fixtures on paper.
Plus the fact they have no decent goal scorer is going to put them under pressure in games.
Also they sold tadic thier best creative player etc.
                      That was my logic anyway.
Burnley seem a safer bet for clean sheets especially the way they play and thier fixtures. Crucially they have a decent goal scorer who can take the pressure off the team.

Ok narrower it down to these two options. Obliviously will wait until CS but thoughts on best?

    A) Kun / Ramsey

    B) Lacazette / Mahrez

I looked at the sky sports fantasy football it seems extremely difficult to get a decent team!
    The pricing is horrible.

    Ryan, button
    Robertson, tark, Boly, Cedric, WB
    Salah, Mane, Mahrez, Rich, Ward
    Auba, Arnie, Zaha

Keep changing my balance of funds with my third striker. Have had all of zaha, Aguero, and Firmino in the slot at different times. Think this team might be the safest regarding everyone playing week 1. Also which is the best burnley defender to choose?

    RMT please!

    GK: Fabi / Foster
DEF: Bailly - Gomez - Luiz (W-B, Cedric)
MID: Pedro - Salah - Richarlison - Sanchez - Neves
    ATK: Firmino - Auba (Kamara)

Couple of gambles in there, Pedro in particular. Sanchez looks like he's going to start number 9 - when he shifts outs wide I'll swap him form De Bruyne.

Can a still team look really, really good with all 3 of Salah, Kane, KDB?

I'm looking at it and I'm seeing some sacrifices..

Got a bit of a dilemma in midfield for 5.0:

Kante (solid enough but may miss the start)
    Jorginho
    Noble
    Neves
    Cairney

Any thoughts or options I've missed? Cheers.
