There is nothing quite like a managerial change to rekindle interest in a Fantasy Premier League “sleeper”.

Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s (£7.5m) appeal as an FPL asset was nullified last season playing under both Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce at Everton, with the Icelandic midfielder having his worst season from a Fantasy perspective (four goals, four assists and a total of 96 FPL points) since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Unlike during his two-year spell at White Hart Lane, Sigurdsson was a regular first-team fixture for the Toffees during 2017/18, starting 25 of Everton’s first 30 league matches before a knee injury cut short his season.

Many pundits pointed to the fact that a large chunk of those appearances for Everton featured Sigurdsson as a left-sided midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 (or variations thereof), unable to influence the game as much as he could from his preferred “number 10” position.

It should be said, though, that Sigurdsson featured a lot on the left flank during his final campaign with Swansea City, a season that ended with nine goals and 13 assists for the Iceland international.

The capture of Richarlison (£6.5m) from Watford looks likely to put that argument to bed, with the Brazilian winger set to play on the left wing for new Everton boss Marco Silva as he did at Vicarage Road at the beginning of 2017/18.

Silva has stated that, should he be able to recruit a suitable candidate for the all-action “number 6” role, he intends for Everton to line up in a 4-3-3 formation this season, giving the freedom for at least one of the three-man midfield to step up and support the attacking trio.

This channel between midfield and attack would seem ideally suited for Sigurdsson to occupy and Iceland’s talisman made his first post-World Cup appearance for the Toffees in one of the central attacking midfield positions in the 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Blackburn Rovers on July 26. Sigurdsson was said to be one of the few players to emerge from that chastening loss with any credit, having demonstrated that he could execute Silva’s high-pressing gameplan in his 45-minute showing.

Sigurdsson was quiet in the 4-1 defeat to Rennes on July 28 but set Richarlison on his way for Everton’s consolation strike.

The Toffees’ current form in general is something of a concern. While too much weight can be given to pre-season run-outs that are effectively fitness-building exercises, Everton are nevertheless winless in five, having scored on only two occasions during these matches and conceded nine.

That Richarlison, who is available for £1.0m cheaper than Sigurdsson in FPL, has looked sprightly and found the back of the net in pre-season would further dent the Icelandic midfielder’s appeal.

Sigurdsson’s statistics from his final year at Swansea and his talismanic performances at the World Cup this summer, however, suggest that he could still be a credible FPL candidate in the right set-up.

GOAL THREAT

Sigurdsson mustered only 39 attempts on goal last season at a rate of a chance every 58 minutes. That mean was well down on his efforts in 2016/17, when averaging a shot on goal every 28.7 minutes. Sigurdsson fired in 116 attempts on goal during his last season with the Swans, with only Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) bettering that total among midfielders.

Everton’s record signing also had three fewer big chances, 27 fewer shots in the box and 33 fewer penalty area touches in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous season.

While it is easy to conclude that Sigurdsson is an FPL asset on the wane, some context needs to be provided as to how anaemic Everton were under Koeman and especially Allardyce on the whole.

Despite finishing eighth, Everton ranked 19th for attempts on goal and 18th for shots in the box. In the 24 matches that Marco Silva had at the helm of Watford, the Hornets registered 275 shots on goal. Allardyce’s tenure at Everton lasted exactly the same amount of league fixtures, with the Toffees recording only 213 attempts on goal under his reign.

While we are yet to see Silva fulfil his remit of bringing “attractive, attacking football” to Goodison Park in pre-season, the new Everton manager’s more offensive philosophy will surely bode well for Sigurdsson. That the Icelander’s goal conversion rate actually improved last season highlights that, if given adequate attacking opportunities, he will guarantee goals.

CREATIVITY

Like his goal threat figures, Sigurdsson’s underlying creativity statistics also nosedived last season.

The Icelandic midfielder created 38 chances at a rate of one every 60 minutes, a drop-off from the 2016/17 campaign in which he carved out 77 opportunities for the Swans and averaged a key pass once every 43 minutes.

Again, though, Sigurdsson’s figures reflect Everton’s laboured attacking play in 2017/18: the Toffees ranked 18th for chances created among Premier League sides.

SET-PIECE DUTIES

Where Sigurdsson’s goal and assist potential could really be enhanced this season is from dead-ball situations.

The Icelandic midfielder took 75 corners last season, a huge drop-off from the 2016/17 season in which he delivered 183 corner-kicks for the Swans. Sigurdsson also only had four attempts on goal from set-play situations in 2017/18, down from 27 in the previous campaign.

Sigurdsson could have the monopoly on set pieces this season, though. Wayne Rooney, who took 30 corners last season, has departed for the United States, while Leighton Baines (£5.5m), who took 22 corner-kicks, could soon be surplus to requirements with left-back Lucas Digne expected to sign from Barcelona in the coming days.

Sigurdsson might be presented with significantly more free-kick opportunities this season, too, and not just owing to the absence of Rooney: new signing Richarlison was the most fouled played in the Premier League last season.

Thoughts on whether Mawson comes in at 4.5 or 5.0?

If it's the former, I'd definitely fancy a 4.5 rotation with him and Diop (WHU). They alternate really nicely, are nailed and both have good goal threat. (CRY, BOU, BUR, WLV, eve, WAT, eve, CDF, cdf, BOU)

Two 4.0 defenders might be trouble, even if they've been playing pre-season i think both will have doubts but its an easy problem to have with only 100m

I'd personally swap Auba for Firmino (not as much a goal threat I know, but a dead cert to start games), then get De Bruyne in and possibly swap Cairney for Schurrle with the extra mil? KDB is a dead cert for game time once he's back, whereas Sane is at risk of rotation... also, Firmino and KDB will probably bring in more points over the course of the season. Other than that, strong team!

what makes you think schurrle is a good pick? i agree with kdb and possibly firmino once i see evidence they will play

IMO Firmino is bigger rotation risk that dead certain Auba... And better for FPL with his goal threat and link up with Laca(assists).

I dont really think either are rotation risks, but think auba is better to start the season but also tempted by laca

Mane is the main elation risk at Liverpool. Firmino and Salah were hardly rotated last season. Only in the last few games towards CL final. Schurrle has proven himself at Chelsea when given the opportunity, although still feel he has a point to prove given he didn't get enough game time there. For a mil less though I guess Cairney is a safer bet.

I have a very similar team to yours. I would put Mane in for Sane for now as he hasnt proved anything this preseason unfortunately and theres rotation risk. Is Luiz nailed? Who is Cairney haven't heard much from him.

i would like mane, but really dont want to not have a city attacker, what city players do you have? i think luiz will be nailed but community shield will show us i think. fulham mid, takes their set pieces and suppose to be playing further forward since seri signed for them, he is a bit of a punt but best 5.0 imo

        1. Saka White Rice

I used to have Sane but swapped him out after Peps comment saying hes unfit, and the fact he hasnt played much preseason even though he hasnt played the world cup. I want to include a man city attacker but there doesn't seem to be a nailed pick for the first 2/3 weeks, which is why I rather wait and put someone in later.

You could potentially have a starting back four of players from Man U, Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal for only 20m.
    Gomez, Keane, Kolasinac, Shaw
Opens so many doors for a heavy hitting team.

Except that Gomez won't be starting beyond the first couple of weeks/if at all. That Shaw is out of favour and will be displaced by Young and that Kolasinac's place is in doubt.

    Robertson | Mendy | Davies | Bailly
    Mahrez | Sane | Salah | Eriksen | Maddison/Other 6.5

You should sell some premium mid and try to improve your forwards

Its hard to play this game without top strikers (Kane, Aguero, Auba, Firmino etc)

Bench too weak for a 4-5-1. Nice idea, something I've tinkered with, but if any of Mendy/Bailly/Mahrez/Sane (likely rotation risks) are rested then you're plummeting down the leaderboards.

i think pickford is a flimsy option i would choose ederson or leno over. alonso is to pricy and azpi is better if u really want a 6.5 however i think you should get a 6 mil instead. maguire should downgrade to a 4.5. i would try and bring salah in as he is a 100% must pick. then bring in auba or kun to start as you need at least one star triker.

    Mane vs Eriksen

    Eriksen
    More nailed.
    Scored more points last season
Played 1000 more minutes. Less of a rotation risk with no competition for his spot.
On corners, crossing free kicks and probably majority of direct free kicks (Kane and Trippier will take some)
Spurs could have a slow start with many players returning late from WC
    Harder first 4 fixtures.

    Mane
Having a good pre season, looks in form.
Could be on pens (I personally dont think so despite the pre season penalties)
Liverpool are generally a more attacking team than Spurs, more likely to crush opponents
    Good fixture run
Likely to play less minutes, be taken off early for Shaqiri.
    Slight rotation risk
    Liverpool seem more exciting.

Feels like Mane for the first few games and then switch to Eriksen is the most sane thing to do. Thoughts?

So by downgrading Aguero > Morata and Jota > Neves, I can fit Salah in:

        Robbo / Bailly / Cedric (Wan-Biss, Sutter)
Salah / Sane / Richarlison / Neves (Stephens)

I'm trying to figure out who are the key players from the top teams that don't have question marks over whether or not they are going to start in the first few game weeks given the World Cup. It's doing my head in....

    So far I have:

    Man City: Ederson; ?
Liverpool: Alisson; Robbo; VVD; Salah; Mane; Firmino
    Arsenal: Aubameyang; Ozil; Ramsey
    Chelsea: Azpi; Morata;
    Spurs: Eriksen
Man U: De Gea, Sanchez, Martial

Who else can we say with certainty is a likely starter without significant question marks...

A question for people with insight into CPL. Who is SchlOOPs competition for left midfield? And will he play left back if he gets ousted from midfield? He looks enticing but I dont want him if hes likely to lose his spot and end up benched.

4-3-3 = no Schlupp (nice stealing of my SchlOOP by the way). Zaha/McArthur in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2.
Loftus-Cheek leaving means Zaha could go back there.

PVA is Patrick Van Aanholt, You're basically paying an extra 1m for a defender in the same team who scores/assists occasionally. Tomkins can pop up with a goal or two himself though!

As for midfield it is hard to upgrade even with an extra 1.5 without finding another 0.5-1.0 elsewhere. Then Mkhi can become Eriksen/Mane/Sane/Mahrez. I'd downgrade Firmino to Zaha but that's just me!

with ederson you will only need a 4 mil gk and play ederson every game. neves is a poor option as he is defensive and wont be getting many points. try to bring in eriksen instead of mhky and i dont think you need arnie with firmino and auba

Would appreciate an RMT, done a tiny bit of tinkering to make my bench a tad stronger. If you leave your own team in the reply I will pass feedback on yours too!

Patricio (Norris) --- apparently he's usurped Ruddy as no. 2?
Robertson, Bellerin, Tomkins (AWB, Diop) --- Diop will take Tomkins' place for GW2, but that's about it for the first eight GWs.
Salah, Sanchez, Richarlison, Cairney (Gunnarsson) --- Sanchez is a placeholder for KdB after the first two gameweeks are finished.
    Aguero, Laca, Zaha.

      Patricio - nailed
Bellerin - nice but tough GW1-2, maybe switch in later?
Richarlison - not a fan personally, too hyped. Maybe a punt on Pedro if Willian leaves?
      Overall - solid 8/10!

      Here’s mine....!
Subject to injuries or transfers....options below if any not nailed...! Thoughts?

      Ederson (4.0)
      Luiz - Robbo - Kola (Peltier/WB)
Salah - Mané - Mahrez - Costa (Masuaku)

I really like the balance of your team. The Salah Mane double up works nicely until it’s established who is on penalties.

Do you think Costa is the best 5.0 option? I see you’re a Wolves fan, but my Fulham blood tells me Cairney is the way to go there 😉

Definitely not established mane is on penalties! Salah let him have the first one and the second was obviously cause he'd scored the first. Milner, Fabinho and Milner ahead of him in pecking order and maybe even shaqiri of he's on the pitch. Just my opinion as a Liverpool fan

Your midfield is exceptionally strong, but feel that maybe takes a little bit away from your second two strikers? Man City triple attack looks like it could either be absolutely brilliant or scary when it comes to rotation.

Any thoughts on the death of the 3rd striker, as widely reported in FPL circles?

I completely take on board the factual basis for 'value' applied to the position, but I am convinced that this season (and moving forwards) the importance of a three man bench will be critical.

The Man City rotation thing is only going to become more prevalent among higher spending squads. Nailed players are going to become fewer and fewer in the attacking positions. Having 15 solid options you can rely on (and rotate yourself) is a strategy I'm strongly leaning toward.

For the 3rd striker, that means Josh King for me, until a lesser priced option becomes viable.
Bobby Reid could be interesting at 5.5m, and there are a few 6.0m options bouncing about.
The problem is that there don't appear to be any viable 4.5-5.0m options cementing their places during pre-season.
Sorloth, Bonatini or a.n.other may emerge and provide a useful downgrade option, but right now I can't see through the mist...

For me, writing off the 3rd Forward position with a non-playing 4.5m option, whilst investing in the likes of Wan-Bissaka(4.0), perhaps even a 4.5 midfielder, and multiple top 6 assets seems a little on the risky side - in fact it's got 'Destination, Early Wildcard' written all over it!

I currently have Salah but a friend who writes for one of the papers brought up a good point that he may suffer from second season syndrome! As seen in Hazard, Bale and to a lesser extent Ronaldo.

I think every team who play against Liverpool will have two men on Salah. His from deep runs (now known to managers and scouts) will be impacted. The likelihood of him getting injured (see CL final for reference) will be increased.

There are so many strong three man forward combinations I can't see myself going with only two premium options.
Sorloth does appear to be the best option, based on preseason games, if you want a cheap bench option.

I can't see any reason for death of the 3rd striker with options like Arnie, Zaha, Wood, King, Austin (Maybe)... I'd prefer all of them to most 6.5-7.0 and cheaper mids.

With the current options I believe there will be a death of the 5th midfielder more than death of the 3rd striker.

This is how I'm looking at it!

With the cheap striker options available this seems the best bet for me. Front 3 is currently Kun,Firmino,Arnie - Plenty options around the 6.5/7 bracket to include along with 1 premium.

My plan is to be going with a 343/442 setup. Meaning I have 1 decent option as my first sub with an extra defender who plays and has a favourable fixture run along with a 4.5m bench fodder mid to fill the squad.

Personally I think it’s the lack of cheap performing third strikers in the last 1 or 2 seasons which has made people consider ditching - that and the increase in investing in defence. Often when you have a third striker at 6.0 or below you’re having to jump from striker to striker if they don’t score in a couple of games whereas midfielders we tend to have a bit more patience

The 3rd striker provided poor value last season, but with more decent mid-price forward options such as Arnautovic and Zaha now available, he might be about to make a comeback.

I do expect a greater variety in formations this season though, with 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 perhaps set to challenge the traditional 3-4-3 and 3-5-2.

I agree with the part of starting the season with a non-playing 4.5striker. Its way easier to predict a playing 4.5 mid, and maybe even a 4.0 fifth def.

The range of supposedly good strikers in the 6-7m bracket seems to be able to compete with a 5th mid or 4th def, with the one caveat being that playing 4 at the back should free up more money.

Based on averages of "third" strikers (which itself is a term loaded with assumptions). So it's not applicable to Zaha as an individual or as a part of you 11-15 player team. It's just a way to form narratives to talk about FPL in a manageable (and somewhat sensationalised) way, but it means very little imo

Thoughts on this please folks? I've always known I was going to take a punt on Mitrovic, so he's now straight in my team. Does the rest of it look OK?

    Patricio
Robertson | David Luiz | Lawton
    Salah | Eriksen | Keita | Ramsey
    Aguero | Arnautovic | Mitrovic

    Norris | Tomkins | Ward | Wan-Bissaka

I'd go with Stephens as your 4.5 MD sub. Guaranteed to play so always sitting there with a couple of points ready to come in. I expect Ward will be in and out, and you'd be extremely lucky to have him auto-subbed in on a week when he has scored/assisted!

Opinions on my alternative team? I have gone with certain starters in my opinion. I feel like the the forward roles at the moment look to uncertain and I don't think I have weakened my team by not going with any of the 'big hitters' but I'm interested in what other people think.

My thoughts are aguero probly starts one game before rotation risk with Jesus. Lukaku, kane, vardy don't start gw 1/2. Firmino unfit? Aubu probly the only one nailed but not sure I see value in him playing on the left and would probly go laccazete if I had to choose ..

    Anyway ..

    Pickford --- Stecklemberg
VVD--- Robbo---- Mendy --- Danials --- Wan -Boss
Sane---- Salah --- Sanchez --- Richarlson--- chalobah
    Wood---- Arno--- Zaha

    1. phild22
      • 10 Years

i agree about the strikers, think i will still go with 1 big hitter. I think if you are going for a cheap front 3 then you need a plan what you would do if a couple of premium strikers start on fire, i think you would have to wildcard, although it is risk/reward

Good team but brave going with that forward line.

Sanchez is my puzzle at the moment. Think Utd will win the first couple and if they do, he should be among the points BUT he looks very frustrated and I'd be looking to swap after a few weeks.

If I take him out, it opens up for a big hitter forward but then the midfield looks light.

Previously I've thought Wood would do well but flatters to deceive a little.

      1. BAGGIE BOY
        • 8 Years

In thinking Sanchez short term I think de bruyne at 10m is a bargain and with city fixtures I think it's an easy swap. Think I might look to use wildcard once we know who is and isn't starting and who looks good. Front line is a little light but as I said they should start and they all have good fixture apart from Arno who is bang in form!

There was an interesting post about points per mil cost and wood scores high up there. At 6.5m and good fixtures for me he is hard to ignore

on the whole i agree, however is 50% of teams have salah and captain him, if he scores 2 in the first game and you dont have him, unless your captain matches him week in week out i think you would be quite far behind and find it tough to get him in, always easier to take him out

The 3.0m extra right now over other premium mids just doesn’t get you enough alternative quality to surpass him and his points potential being in your team...

...so I would say it would take 14-15m to justify dropping him as that allows you to buy more points elsewhere to make up for it.

Definitely viable to go for a 4.5 + 4.0 fire and forget keeper strategy. The main issue is knowing which one to get! That's the advantage of Ederson, say. One of the 4.5s may match him, but the chance of you picking the right one isn't that high
