There is nothing quite like a managerial change to rekindle interest in a Fantasy Premier League “sleeper”.

Gylfi Sigurdsson‘s (£7.5m) appeal as an FPL asset was nullified last season playing under both Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce at Everton, with the Icelandic midfielder having his worst season from a Fantasy perspective (four goals, four assists and a total of 96 FPL points) since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.

Unlike during his two-year spell at White Hart Lane, Sigurdsson was a regular first-team fixture for the Toffees during 2017/18, starting 25 of Everton’s first 30 league matches before a knee injury cut short his season.

Many pundits pointed to the fact that a large chunk of those appearances for Everton featured Sigurdsson as a left-sided midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 (or variations thereof), unable to influence the game as much as he could from his preferred “number 10” position.

It should be said, though, that Sigurdsson featured a lot on the left flank during his final campaign with Swansea City, a season that ended with nine goals and 13 assists for the Iceland international.

The capture of Richarlison (£6.5m) from Watford looks likely to put that argument to bed, with the Brazilian winger set to play on the left wing for new Everton boss Marco Silva as he did at Vicarage Road at the beginning of 2017/18.

Silva has stated that, should he be able to recruit a suitable candidate for the all-action “number 6” role, he intends for Everton to line up in a 4-3-3 formation this season, giving the freedom for at least one of the three-man midfield to step up and support the attacking trio.

This channel between midfield and attack would seem ideally suited for Sigurdsson to occupy and Iceland’s talisman made his first post-World Cup appearance for the Toffees in one of the central attacking midfield positions in the 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Blackburn Rovers on July 26. Sigurdsson was said to be one of the few players to emerge from that chastening loss with any credit, having demonstrated that he could execute Silva’s high-pressing gameplan in his 45-minute showing.

Sigurdsson was quiet in the 4-1 defeat to Rennes on July 28 but set Richarlison on his way for Everton’s consolation strike.

The Toffees’ current form in general is something of a concern. While too much weight can be given to pre-season run-outs that are effectively fitness-building exercises, Everton are nevertheless winless in five, having scored on only two occasions during these matches and conceded nine.

That Richarlison, who is available for £1.0m cheaper than Sigurdsson in FPL, has looked sprightly and found the back of the net in pre-season would further dent the Icelandic midfielder’s appeal.

Sigurdsson’s statistics from his final year at Swansea and his talismanic performances at the World Cup this summer, however, suggest that he could still be a credible FPL candidate in the right set-up.

GOAL THREAT

Sigurdsson mustered only 39 attempts on goal last season at a rate of a chance every 58 minutes. That mean was well down on his efforts in 2016/17, when averaging a shot on goal every 28.7 minutes. Sigurdsson fired in 116 attempts on goal during his last season with the Swans, with only Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.5m) bettering that total among midfielders.

Everton’s record signing also had three fewer big chances, 27 fewer shots in the box and 33 fewer penalty area touches in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous season.

While it is easy to conclude that Sigurdsson is an FPL asset on the wane, some context needs to be provided as to how anaemic Everton were under Koeman and especially Allardyce on the whole.

Despite finishing eighth, Everton ranked 19th for attempts on goal and 18th for shots in the box. In the 24 matches that Marco Silva had at the helm of Watford, the Hornets registered 275 shots on goal. Allardyce’s tenure at Everton lasted exactly the same amount of league fixtures, with the Toffees recording only 213 attempts on goal under his reign.

While we are yet to see Silva fulfil his remit of bringing “attractive, attacking football” to Goodison Park in pre-season, the new Everton manager’s more offensive philosophy will surely bode well for Sigurdsson. That the Icelander’s goal conversion rate actually improved last season highlights that, if given adequate attacking opportunities, he will guarantee goals.

CREATIVITY

Like his goal threat figures, Sigurdsson’s underlying creativity statistics also nosedived last season.

The Icelandic midfielder created 38 chances at a rate of one every 60 minutes, a drop-off from the 2016/17 campaign in which he carved out 77 opportunities for the Swans and averaged a key pass once every 43 minutes.

Again, though, Sigurdsson’s figures reflect Everton’s laboured attacking play in 2017/18: the Toffees ranked 18th for chances created among Premier League sides.

SET-PIECE DUTIES

Where Sigurdsson’s goal and assist potential could really be enhanced this season is from dead-ball situations.

The Icelandic midfielder took 75 corners last season, a huge drop-off from the 2016/17 season in which he delivered 183 corner-kicks for the Swans. Sigurdsson also only had four attempts on goal from set-play situations in 2017/18, down from 27 in the previous campaign.

Sigurdsson could have the monopoly on set pieces this season, though. Wayne Rooney, who took 30 corners last season, has departed for the United States, while Leighton Baines (£5.5m), who took 22 corner-kicks, could soon be surplus to requirements with left-back Lucas Digne expected to sign from Barcelona in the coming days.

Sigurdsson might be presented with significantly more free-kick opportunities this season, too, and not just owing to the absence of Rooney: new signing Richarlison was the most fouled played in the Premier League last season.

First Draft - What you reckon to this?

    Alisson (Speroni)
    Coleman | Tomkins | Daniels (x2 £4.0m)
Salah | Sane | Mhki | Richarlison (Romeu)
    Auba | Firmino | Zaha

If you're having 2x 4.0 defenders, you'll want one to be AWB, so get rid of Speroni and have your 4.0 fodder GK as somone like Hamer or Boruc.

Stephens probably a better 4.5 MD option than Romeu too. Gets booked less often.

My problem with that article is that it implies that you already dont have your defense full of 5.0+ high value defenders. I have that and I find that the strikers at that point seem better value than similarily priced mids.

        • 11 Years

Especially considering a 6.5 foward + 4.5 mid means you have an actual playing bench player instead of 6.5 mid and 4.5 forward where the forward never plays.

Yeah, it's essentially writing one position off (that's proven to have little value) but making sure you have a decent 5th mid and def to come on if needed.
However this season might be different with Arnie / Zaha as nice mid-price options that we haven't previously had

    GK: Fabianski
    DEF: Coleman, Alexander-Arnold, Daniels
MID: Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Salah, Schürrle, Eriksen
    FWD: Firmino, Zaha

    Bench: Forster, Cedric, Kamara, Wan-Bissaka

Am aware of Forster's fight for #1, and Alexander-Arnold's possible fatigue and starting week 1. Also weak bench.

Seem to be having a bad preseason, lots of players will be missing at the start of the season due to World Cup.

I will be having Sanchez 100% though.. And Shaw if it looks like he'll play.

Personally I think our pre season troubles have been blown out of proportion a bit with the players missing due to WC - I’m going Sanchez for the early weeks as if we’re going to score (which touchwood we should) it’ll likely be through him

      1. The Big Fella
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 7 months ago

I think Sanchez is a lot of money when you don't even sound too sure yourself that you will be scoring. I am steering clear of their attacking assets until Mourinho is fired. I currently have Bailey though.

        1. Big4FPL
          • 11 Years

Well even if we’re only winning 1-0 it would be quite easy for Sanchez to rack up 8-10 points in the same way Hazard tends to mop up BAPS when he scores - it’s just more of a risk than someone like Mane where Liverpool are probably scoring 3-4 and likely to be involved

2nd attempt, think I'm pretty set on Sterling even with his price increase:

    Begovic | McCarthy
    Robertson | Tomkins | Daniels | Holebas | Peltier
    Salah | Sterling | Mkhitaryan | Richarlison | Neves
    Aubameyang | Arnautovic | Zaha

I don't doubt Sterling will have another very good season, but I just can't justify his extra 1m over KDB, 1.5m over Sane, and 2.0m over Mahrez. Good luck though - a massive differential potentially.

Why start the season with him when he wont play GW1 and likely a sub GW2??

Just makes zero sense to me with the wealth of attacking options at there disposal. 11m is the reason you're sitting on all that fodder at the back

Jorginho is a defensive player so not necessary. Just get a 4.5 mid like Stephens to free up funds. DDG seems overpriced. Maybe you should consider Ederson? D.Silva might not play many games so if you can somehow find some extra 0.5 you could turn him into Mahrez or even Eriksen if you find a 1.0. Generally a decent team.

If you look into a metric which I like which is point per pound, the premium strikers actually do not perform as well as the top midfielders or the top wingbacks. To pay 11m for a premium striker you have to sacrifice in so many other areas of the pitch. Last season, the strikers were very disappointing given how much they costed.

That was one exception but look at what the sacrifices you had to make to accommodate Kane! You would have a terrible and cut price defense or weak midfield in order to afford a player such as Kane!

I think that strategy of having no premium strikers is all well and good until one or more of Auba/Aguero/Lukaku/Kane start firing and suddenly your team structure has to be pulled apart - otherwise if you’re happy with no premium strikers i’d downgrade one of Ota/Alonso to upgrade Gross, even if it’s just to Robertson and Ramsey

Thanks for the suggestion. That sounds like a good idea actually to downgrade one of the premium wingbacks to upgrade Gross. I think I can afford to upgrade Gross to Mahrez or Sane which will then give me an impenetrable midfield of Salah-Eriksen-KDB-Sane/Mahrez.

Exactly - if you’re going no premium strikers you want as much in midfield as possible, allows just 2 transfers if you do want to switch up your strikers

We can never be 100% sure of anything that's why this is fun. I know these few facts that give me comfort:

        1. The top 2 defenders of the past 2 years were Azpilicueta and Alonso. They have done well in consecutive seasons so they are not one-hit wonder. Even with the new coach in Sarri, I believe their quality are above the rest of the other defenders in the Premier League.

        2. The premium midfielders in my squad Salah-KDB-Eriksen are hitting their prime as shown in their World Cup performances. They are regular starters on top 6 teams so they will get their fair share of points no matter what.

        3. The duo of strikers Zaha and Arnautovic are positioned as central strikers this season and are in good form judging from their scoring in the pre-season. They will get more goals this season than last season when they were positioned mostly on the wings.

I think Sigurdsson moving back to #10 position in a Silva team will see him have a better season...willing to take the punt based on the fixtures with an exit strategy to Ramsay or an emerging bandwagon (Jota? Schurrle?).

Whilst we're here, first time poster long time reader. Would anyone care to do me a favour on a team which has changed multiple times already...

    Patricio / Foster
    Mendy/Robertson/Azpi/Cedric/AWB
    Sane/Mane/Ozil/Sigurdsson/Jorginho
    Auba/Arnie/Bobby Reid

Intending on a 3-5-2 formation with Reid and 2 defenders benched. Stuck between Jorginho, W Hughes and Cairney for the 5th midfielder slot. Was strongly considering Schurrle but took Mendy and a 5.0 mid instead.

    Any thoughts welcome! Thanks

Fabianski rotates better with Foster in the early part of the season.

Definitely go for Hughes or Cairney over Jorginho. Either would be good picks, but I'd go for Cairney.

Eden Wizard - it says only if he gets a suitable number 6. Don't see why Gueye couldn't play there I suppose. My thoughts were that it's likely to be Tosun up top with Sigurdsson in behind, Walcott/Lookman/Bolasie and Richarlison on the wings. I've read elsewhere that the purchase of Richarlison is partly to get Sigurdsson back more centrally instead of out left. We shall see - I'm no Everton expert!

The Adam - I considered Fabianski but I don't see West Ham keeping many clean sheets. Mind you, Wolves probably won't either. Why Cairney? Set pieces?

    my new draft:

    pickford - fabianski
van dijk - tomkins - wanbissaka - maguire - dunk
saah - pedro - mkhitaryan - elneny - de bruyne(the safest man city midfielder?)
    arnautovic - auba - zaha

or double midfielder liverpool(but with the fear of CL rotation?)
in this case i have 0.5 itb to spend in defence?

KDB is going to be a few games out at the start. Mkhi also a potential bench option in a 4-3-3. Elneny also won't play over Torreira.

      KBD > Mahrez/Sane/Bsilva
      Mkhi > Ramsay
      Elneny > Hughes/Cairney

      A I forsee him being a 1 in 1 man

Aguero is likely to lose minutes throughout the course of the season

Sterling could outscore both but I think in midfield there is much better value to he had.

Looking for a KDB placeholder. Who do you think will score the most points in the run up to his return?

I’ve been considering a placeholder for one of KDB/Hazard - I’ve currently got Sanchez but out of the 4 in your list i’d say Mane...just keep 0.5 itb!

D if you intend to bring KDB in for GW3. C if you intend to bring KDB in for GW4 (so you catch Mane at home to BRI).

Spurs have a nice opening two fixtures, and Eriksen will be one of the main men affecting both games. Kane will be back by GW2 you'd imagine. (Maybe even GW1, who knows)

Trent not nailed. Maguire is overpriced imo.

Kennedy has a blank GW3 and awful fixtures surrounding it.

6m in the bank sounds like a crazy disadvantage to put yourself at. I'm all for holding 1/2m at the start to jump on bandwagons but with that amount in your pocket your team is quite clearly worse than everyone else's.

They can most likely just get Kane in for a -4 at the same time as you and there's a very good chance they'll have many more points.
