The preparation of the Fantasy Football Scout Community delved into a new level of detail as the Gameweek 1 deadline approaches.

There have been some excellent discussions in the comments this week and we’ve got plenty more articles and tables that should Fantasy managers out too.

We’ve gone over all of it in our latest Community Round-up

Community Articles

We had some excellent community articles this week as our pre-season preparation ramped up.

Rossi3245 produced two brilliant pieces this week. The first was an insightful piece on the dangers of using chips in the early Gameweeks while the second focused on an analysis of the FPL market. Both articles were well received.

With FPL Draft still something of an unknown to many Fantasy managers, Hooperman kindly put together a handy guide to running a successful league in that game mode.

We also made a start on our RMT Collection this week with Gregor revealing his team first before Spencer did so later in the week. This will be continuing with a new article every day until GW1 kicks off. Post your teams in the collection, instead of the main article, and give others some feedback!

The Hottest Topics

Mikeharbrw has gone in search of the goals again this week with two interesting Hot Topics. The first looked at teams most likely to produce a battering, the second at the opposite: whipping boys.

As expected, there has been plenty of debate over the issue of third strikers. Legomané started a conversation over whether they are a dying breed in FPL, Brosstan tried to find the best £6.5m option while Stat asked if people were considering Josh King.

We asked the community which players had been in drafts since the game launched, as well the age-old conundrum of which formation to play. Twisted Saltergater discussed the best tips for the season.

Interestingly, some seemingly established ideals were challenged this week too. Mikeharbrw asked whether David Silva is being overlooked by Fantasy managers and Your Mum’s Athletic questioned whether Manchester United defensive cover is essential for Gameweek 1. Eden Wizard went into detail about what the best midfielders offer this season.

We also had a discussion about Eliteserien’s return with Niemi starting things off by talking about Gameweek 17 transfers and captains.

There was a great conversation started by Mange Tout Rodney about FPL’s ability to distract those who play it from reality while RedArrows light-heartedly revealed his pet peeves when it comes to Fantasy Football terminology – especially the word ‘nailed’.

Which brings us nicely onto Deulofale‘s review of Arsenal and which of their players might be ‘nailed’. We hope RedArrows enjoyed that one!

Finally I issued some announcements about the site: the first was about gravs and RMTs, and the second and third related to our brand new badges and new default options on our profiles.

Members Tables

The FFS community continued its search for the ultamite budget players this week with two of members tables helping the discussion.

The-FPL-Physio looked at every striker under £7.0m, while Jonya55 honed in on the attacking statistics of midfielders valued at £5.0m or less.

Choppers13 drew up a table to help Fantasy managers use goal invovlement to find the right options for their squads.

Finally, Triggerlips produced a fantastic table entitled ‘Biggest Nut Jobs’ which focussed on headed attempts from defenders.

Community Tournaments

A reminder to all that we always welcome new Community Article and Tournament submissions. It is best to email me when submitting a Community Article, as there isn’t currently an automated notification letting us know it has been submitted.

Equally, if you have an idea for a Hot Topic or discussion that needs more visibility, feel free to flag it or email me directly: geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

And finally, another reminder to use your voting powers. Upvotes help mods spot useful content, as we often use the ‘Sort By: Rating’ functionality, which we can then sticky or Hot Topic it. This is increasingly important as we approach the beginning of the season!

I'm leaning toward Dunk. Not great for week 2, although I wouldn't be shocked if Brighton were able to frustrate Manchester United. 10-13 fixtures are solid, although the FPL gods are cackling at us for planning that far ahead.

I've got him because even he doesn't play GW1 v Arsenal (no big deal, covered by Doherty / AWB), I'm convinced he is a huge part of Pep's plans this season and once in, will be close to nailed aside from the odd rest which is fine. I don't want to use a transfer in 1 or 2 weeks when I basically know I want him in my team.

I can also see him getting replaced by Sane after 60 minutes if City happen to still be chasing a goal, meaning possible locked in CS points.

Unless the community shield throws us a curve ball, I'm planning on going into the season with a 3-5-2 and no strikers priced above 7.0...

Allows me to have a 5.0 starting keeper, three 6.5/6.0 defenders and £45.5m spent across my five midfielders.

So much value in those budget forwards around the 6.5/7.0 mark.

If he's playing up front he's fairly fixture proof imo. Kind of player that can make something from nothing.

If he's shoved out wide then I'll just straight swap to Zaha/Tosun.

    Money in the bank?

With the ‘Wrold Cup Hangover’ influencing player selection in the first few Gameweeks, this season I find many of my draft teams are short of 100m. So for the first time I’m content with a team that gives me money in the bank for some planned transfers or to jump on bandwogans..... right now I’ve got 1.5m in the bank. Is anyone else picking low price players early doors and confident they have a decent team that is under 100m? How much are you saving?

    1. Siggy in the Middle
      • 10 Years

Fell I've a decent team currently and I've £1M in the bank. Look at my most recent RMT if you wanna see it.

.5m is more than enough to make good changes for GW3 onwards. Gotta be happy with your side for 2 weeks though... Surely

I have £0.5m ITB but purely by accident. I'm not saving it deliberately, I just don't feel like spending it improves my team. Nice to have, though.

I'm starting to think people are making too much of the World Cup Hangover. Nearly everyone will be back. It's having a bigger affect on a majority of the squads than it should.

The more I look at this team the more I don't really like it. I'm not sure. 4-3-3

    Ederson (Stekelenberg)
    TAA, Bailly, Sakho, Hoedt (4.0)
    KDB, Salah, Pedro (4.5, 4.5)
    Aguero, Aubama, Austin

    Weaknesses?

It’s some serious groupthink that no one’s even considered Josh Murphy, Cardiff’s £24m record signing playing as a winger, while people are going for Ralls instead.

It’s the exact same situation as the Neves-Costa one, yet people are going for Costa :S

Absolutely nobody is going for Costa. Have you even looked at the TSB? It's all about Neves/Jota regarding Wolves midfielders. Even Jimenez has a higher TSB than Costa. No idea what you're on about.

Already have. And I'm still really, really not seeing your point whatsoever. Neves has like 17% TSB and Costa is around 1. It's a numbers game. There's no way you can say, with those numbers, that just because you've seen a couple of posts saying otherwise, that the consensus is the exact opposite of what the numbers dictate.

Why you seem to have an agenda about this is absolutely bizarre.

At least it makes it easier to completely ignore any input you throw at this site for the coming season. For that I am appreciative. Thanks.

On the note re: TSB% you must be new around here to not know players we call “casual picks”. Go on and post a question asking about Neves/Costa. I can guarantee you it’s nowhere close to 17:1 in Neves’ favour. It’ll be much closer to evens or even Costa favoured.

Then post the same question about Ralls/Murphy, and you’ll get my point.

      3. Meppelfield

I've seen a lot of reasoning along the lines of picking an expensive asset because it is easy to downgrade to whoever shows form compared to having to spend two transfers if you need to free up funds. An example would be picking Sanchez so that you can turn him into KDB, Mahrez, Sane, Mane, Eriksen or whoever catches form.

While that makes sense, is it really favourable over just banking the spare change right away? By banking you allow yourself to react to changes in all positions, not only the category where you have the placeholder heavy hitter. If you have Sanchez as expendable and Auba catches form you're looking at two transfers again. However by banking you risk having a too big buffer and therefore not utilizing your budget to its fullest potential because the player you need may not cost that much as you have banked, or may even be an unforeseen downgrade somewhere else.

I'm inclined to say by looking at the pricing of players this year that 1.5m banked goes a long way. It allows for some popular choices from GW1, such as Eriksen, Mane, Sane to be upgraded all the way to the likes of Sterling. You also could do Lacazette to Auba/Aguero, or if Kane breaks his August curse you could do Aguero/Laca to Kane. With price changes in mind 2m would be playing it safe.

Thoughts on this? Is it worth the extra flexibility by not spending your full budget for GW1?

Of course. You don't have to spend it for the sake of spending it.

I started with 2m ITB last season. Have 1.5 ITB now and hope to have at least 1 at deadline.

I prefer that approach, but it’s really hard resisting the urge to throw that spare cash at a last minute upgrade. I think that’s why a lot don’t do it.

It's a valid way of playing the game. I may yet keep some money ITB. Flexibility is greatly underrated and the ability to save a transfer because you found 0.5m somewhere and downgrade a player with an unlikely upside is more likely to be a good decision.

I agree with your premise but think it's different with Sanchez and KdB.

Sanchez is likely to start up front for United in two strong fixtures, OOP in fantasy.
Shortly after those, Sanchez is going to be moved back to the wing in place of Lukaku so his value will be less.
Sanchez' fixtures also take a significant turn for the worse.
In general, he becomes a much poorer option after GW2.

KdB will likely return to the City side by GW2/3/4.
When he does so, he is more or less the only City asset in midfield/attack who is nailed and excused from Pep's rotation policy and therefore the safest option.
With the volume of transfers in of KdB when he starts playing, a 0.3 rise is more or less inevitable, so I'd rather pay 10.0 than 10.3.

          Evening all.

Any particular reason Helder Costa is being widely ignored in favour of either Jota or Neves?

As far as I'm aware Neves will be playing in CM while Costa has been in the front three pretty much every game of pre-season to this point.
Jota is £6.5m and while he looks to be a very good player, at £1.5m more and both midfielders with OOP potential, it just seems a bit odd.

          What am I missing?

many atttractive 5m midfielders IMO, quite easy to fit those 3 into the team if u don't go for city midfielder/mane

not much wiggy room in that midfield. it could work out though....

Quite possibly. Timing will still be the key though. Too early to go with Auba and whilst Aguero will score many, will you captain him at any time if Jesus is fit?

If Jesus is ruled out for a period of time, then that is the moment to go for Aguero.

Aguero in particular. He's never been cheaper.

Auba is a bit dependant on how will Arsenal look like this season.

Pep's comments on a back 3 may make Mendy a top pick, and probably suggests playing Aguero and Jesus in a 2 is a realistic possibility.

Anyone brave enough to double up on City strikers?

I did it last season at the start and it went alright...but we didn't know about Salah back then...

Nope. Just Kun. Prefer Laca and Firm at 9.5

His comments have the oppositie effect on me.
I fear Mendy and Sane sharing minutes depending of formation switches etc.

Not sure, I think we will be seeing enough of Mahrez/Sterling in the front two to be put off this strategy.

With Kolasinac out for 8-10 weeks, who do we think will take his place at the start of the season?

          Holding, Chambers or other?

          Cheers
