More injury concerns for Burnley as pre-season takes its toll

Burnley picked up a few more injuries as they beat Aberdeen in the Europa League, which could make it harder to invest in them for Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere, the make-up of the three-man defence at Southampton is becoming clearer, while we learned more about Leicester’s team selection without Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m).

In another Scout Notes article we have a look at what the latest goals, assists and line-ups mean for our Fantasy Premier League teams.

BURNLEY 3-1 ABERDEEN

  • Goals: Chris Wood (£6.5m), Jack Cork (£5.0m), Ashley Barnes (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Ashley Westwood (£4.5m), Charlie Taylor (£4.5m)

Burnley’s European win over Aberdeen came at a slight cost as minor injuries were sustained by three of players all previously expected to be in the starting line-up for Gameweek 1.

“We have a number of soft tissue injuries. Chris Wood (abductor), Aaron Lennon (hamstring) and Stephen Ward. not serious ones, but we’ve had to be really careful tonight.” – Sean Dyche.

A potential lay-off for Chris Wood (£6.5m) would probably reduce the complication in picking the right centre-forward for the Clarets’ trip to Southampton on August 12. But if manager Sean Dyche confirms in the coming days that he is fit, it will be hard to predict who will start next Sunday. Sam Vokes (£5.5m) has registered more pre-season minutes than any of his colleagues (493) but was used only as a substitute in the first-leg of the Europa League qualifier at Aberdeen. However, he was restored to the starting line-up for the return leg at Turf Moor last night. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) has struggled with a minor injury himself over the summer and has featured just three times, but should be available for Gameweek 1.

Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) had emerged as a great alternative to the injured Robbie Brady (£5.5m), registering more pre-season match time than any other winger at the club so far (457 minutes). He is another player to monitor the fitness of as he could provide excellent value in the Burnley attack, with two goals scored this summer. If he misses out then Jonathan Walters (£5.0m) could replace him.

Stephen Ward (£5.0m), if fit, is a sure starter in a very settled Burnley back-line. He started last night’s match alongside Matt Lowton (£5.0m) and the centre-back pairing of James Tarkowski (£5.0m) and Ben Mee (£5.0m). He was withdrawn at full-time with Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) coming on for extra-time, and assisting Jack Cork’s (£5.0m) all-important goal.

Anders Lindegard (£4.5m) could retain his starting berth in the Burnley goal for Gameweek 1 as he was chosen for Thursday’s big European night. Before the match Dyche revealed that Tom Heaton (£5.0m) was in with a chance of playing but in the end he was not risked. At the very least, he is still being considered for the final friendly of the summer, Espanyol’s visit to Turf Moor on Sunday.

“I don’t know how many we’ll get out Sunday, that could be an interesting side, “Tom (Heaton) is closer, but we’ve got to be careful. “I doubt it, definitely not Steven (Defour), Robbie I doubt. We’ve got to be very careful.” – Sean Dyche

While Nick Pope (£5.0m) is not expected to be in contention for some time, the operation following the dislocation of his shoulder has reportedly gone well.

“Popey’s had the op, so far it’s pleasing news in the sense the specialist was happy with what he found and what’s been done. He was just really pleased, it was as clean as he could have hoped for, so good news on that. I haven’t spoken to him yet because he was still recovering, but I’ll speak to him later.” – Sean Dyche

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Lindegaard; Ward (Taylor 90’), Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; Gudmundsson, Cork, Westwood (Hendrick 105’), Lennon (O’Neill 87’); Vokes, Wood (Barnes 45’).

LEICESTER CITY 1-1 VALENCIA

  • Goals: Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m)
  • Assists: James Maddison (£6.5m)

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) returned to match action for Leicester City as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Valencia at the King Power Stadium. He is the first Foxes goalkeeper to last the full 90 minutes in pre-season, as manager Claude Puel has favoured heavy rotation within matches thus far. The fact he managed to play the whole game would suggest that he is already targeting a start in Gameweek 1.

However, it has now been confirmed by the Leicester boss that England’s World Cup squad members Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m) are serious doubts to face Old Trafford in the opening game of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

“If we are serious I think they cannot participate in the first game, with just five days training with the team. They normally need more time, but we will see together with calm. We try to give good game time to work with the team and to make progress with their fitness, and it is important to respect this and to prevent injury. We don’t rush these players. It is important after the World Cup to work but also come back with the team and live with the team to find again the atmosphere of the club and the squad. The players before worked a lot also. Of course Jamie and Harry are valuable players for us but we need to protect them. If they are available to play in their minds it is a good thing because this shows their desire to come back and fight with the team, but we have to take a protective decision from us.” – Claude Puel

Those absences, as expected, leave the door open for alternative options up front and at centre-back in the early part of the season. Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m) strengthened his credentials against Valencia by adding his second goal of pre-season. However, no Leicester player has registered more minutes this summer than Fousseni Diabaté (£5.0m), who could be used either in attacking midfield or as a striker. Demarai Gray (£5.5m) is also an option here but was rested for the most recent match.

As for central defence, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) looks the most likely to play but Jonny Evans (£5.0m) is currently out of action with an injury, as is Nampalys Mendy (not in FPL). If the former West Bromwich Albion man ends up missing out on Gameweek 1, it could mean a start for Yohan Benalouane (£4.0m), who was paired with Morgan for the Valencia meeting. However, versatile Darnell Johnson (not in FPL) has also been used in that role, as well as at right-back. In fact, Diabaté is the only Leicester player with more pre-season minutes than Johnson’s 246 so far.

“We have had our first problem with Jonny Evans and perhaps with Papy Mendy. Evans just felt something in the last game and will not be available for the next two games. Papy is the same thing. He will not be fit for the next friendly games and we will see for the first game but I have a doubt. I don’t know if they will be available for the first game. All these things are a challenge for us to manage.”

It is difficult to predict too much about Leicester’s starting XI for Gameweek 1 considering Puel’s heavy rotation within pre-season matches. But we can see that Ben Chilwell (£4.5m) has played more minutes than Christian Fuchs (£4.5m) at left-back (230 to 160), while James Maddison (£6.5m) should be involved after two assists in 217 pre-season minutes.

LECIESTER CITY XI (4-4-2): Schmeichel; Chilwell (Gordon 63’), Morgan (Ndukwu 63’), Benalouane (Johnson 45’), Pereira (Elder 45’); Albrighton (Knight 63’), Iborra (Choudhury 63’), Ndidi (Amartey 45’), Maddison (Fuchs 63’); Diabaté (Thomas 75’), Iheanacho (Silva 45’).

SC BRAGA 4-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

The arrival of striker Yoshinori Muto (£6.0m) could not come soon enough for Newcastle after their need for reinforcements was highlighted by a 4-0 defeat in Portugal. The Japanese international will be facing competition chiefly from Ayoze Pérez (£6.5m), whose involvement at Braga means he is the most-used forward in pre-season for the Magpies (242 minutes). Joselu (£5.0m) and Dwight Gayle (£6.0m) have been involved less often, with 179 and 118 minutes respectively.

Jonjo Shelvey (£5.5m) missed out on this match through a minor injury but, in his role as co-commentator for BBC Newcastle, he revealed that he should be back for the final friendly of the summer against Augsburg.

“I picked up a minor thigh strain. It’s been troubling me for a couple of weeks but it’s got a bit too painful. I should be back in training for Friday. I’ve been doing a bit of fitness work – I’m happy with how it’s going and should be fine for Saturday.” – Jonjo Shelvey

Meanwhile, Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m) should be okay to return too after he was withdrawn at half-time for precautionary reasons with a knock to his shoulder. Benitez simply said “he’s okay” when asked about him post-match. That means the only main injury concern at the back remains Florian Lejuene (£4.5m), who recently sustained a long-term cruciate ligament problem. Barring any signings, DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) and Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) should start in Gameweek 1; no other Newcastle defenders have more pre-season minutes than their 225 and 205 respectively.

In attacking midfield Matt Ritchie (£6.0m) looks the most assured starter with 287 minutes under his belt this summer, more than any of his colleagues.

NEWCASTLE UNITED XI (4-4-2): Dubravka (Darlow 73’); Dummett, Clark, Lascelles (Schar 45’), Yedlin (Manquillo 73’); Atsu (Murphy 66’), Diamé, Hayden (Ki 66’), Ritchie (Roberts 80’); Gayle (Joselu 73’), Pérez (Longstaff 80’).

SOUTHAMPTON 3-2 CELTA VIGO

  • Goals: Charlie Austin (£6.0m), Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m), Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Matt Targett x2 (£4.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£5.5m)

Mark Hughes’ preferred personnel for his three-man Southampton defence were made clearer in this pre-season win over Celta Vigo at St Mary’s Stadium. Wesley Hoedt (£4.5m) looks the most likely to be involved against Burnley in Gameweek 1 as none of his team-mates have recorded more minutes than his 405 so far this summer. Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m) should sit alongside him given his high-profile switch from Borussia Mönchengladbach. It now looks as if the final slot could fall to either one of Jack Stephens (£4.5m) or Jan Bednarek (£4.0m), with Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) not ready for match action yet. The former has registered more minutes, only Hoedt and Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) have played more this summer, but Bednarek has started both matches since his return to training, at Stephens’ expense. Bertrand seems to have finally moved out of the back three and has spent the last two matches deployed on the left flank of the midfield five.

Behind the back-line, Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) appears to be winning the battle to start between the sticks. He is the only Southampton goalkeeper to have been involved in every match so far and has 270 minutes to his name, compared with Angus Gunn (£4.5m) and Fraser Forster’s (£4.5m) 90 each.

With 3-5-2 looking like Hughes’ preferred formation, Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.0m) and Charlie Austin (£6.0m) should start as the strikers in that system. The Italian has chalked up two goals inn 260 minutes this summer, while former QPR man Austin has found the net and assisted once each in 243 minutes. Shane Long (£5.0m) trails the pair with just three appearances amounting to 135 minutes.

Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) and Mario Lemina (£5.0m) missed the match but should be back in time to feature against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. Redmond fell awkwardly in the win over Dijon while Lemina’s wife gave birth this week.

Cedric Soares (£4.5m) and Yoshida have returned to training but have not yet been deemed fit enough to be involved in pre-season friendlies. As predicted, they are to be considered doubts for Gameweek 1. Matt Targett (£4.5m) looks to be an option on the right flank of the midfield five in Cedric’s absence.

SOUTHAMPTON XI (3-5-2): McCarthy (Gunn 45’); Bednarek (Stephens 60’), Vestergaard, Hoedt; Bertrand (Reed 81’), Davis (Højbjerg 45’), Romeu (Ward-Prowse 77’), Armstrong (Elyounoussi 60’), McQueen (Targett 45’); Gabbiadini (Gallagher 77’), Long (Austin 45’).

Point of order. Burnley injuries are not pre-season taking its toll. They have started their ACTUAL season nearly three weeks early. Which is one reason I think they are fecked (when allied to the dismal lack of recruitment ahead of what could well be a 50 game+ season).

Some players might be good in the first few weeks given they will be tuned up more than other sides but by Christmas I expect them to be in total freefall. Which is sad, because they are a decent club.

Yeah I think you're right. Whether it's the considered the 'season-proper' for them or still 'Premier League season' the point you make still stands. This earlier start has already done them very few favours and personally I'm thinking I may steer clear of their options because of all the problems they've had and a potential burnout later in the campaign.

lets calm it slightly, they won't free fall anywhere. they are a stuffy side and hard to beat, that won't change. whilst they certainly won't replicate last seasons form i don't see them being a risk for relegation at all given the likes of Hudd Brighton Cardiff Watford Fulham are about. Even Southampton will struggle again I think.

Which team will score more goals this year? Can they BOTH break 100?

    a) Man City (106 last year) or
    b) Liverpool (84 last year)

ps. Spurs and Arsenal were "3rd" last year with 74 each.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With the season now a week away, have you settled on a formation?

I generally go with 343 but am considering something more flexible this year, going slightly heavier at the back to sometimes allow 442 or 433. Still, I’ll likely usually be 343, with a cheap benched midfielder.

Are you looking at a cheap bench midfielder? A cheap bench forward? Or are you looking to spread the cash and rotate according to fixtures?

Are you looking at having a strong defence?

Are you looking at 343, 442, 352, or something else entirely?

I'm struggling to see past VVD and Robertson for Premium defenders. The top 6 defences bar Liverpool are all subject to change this year. It took a few games for Jones and Ottamendi to surface last year so hoping same occurs this time round

Kyle Walker has no real competition, Sarri has just said Luiz is important, both of those will score more than a 5.5 or 6.5 striker.

Danilo is competition albeit poor competition imo. Luiz is important until they bring a centre back in which they've been chasing since Sarri arrived

Danilo has just had a protective boot taken off, he's not back anytime soon and even when he is, he's not replacing Walker, was nothing more than cover last year.

Maybe so about Luiz but right now the manager is talking up his attitude and has made an impression, cross that bridge when you come to it, point it, both of those will offer far more than a cheap mid or cheap striker, they'll probably get 15 clean sheets each as a minimum, a forward in their price range won't get near that.

4 points for a goal is the same as 4 points for a CS, have to embrace the prices & evolve with the game.

I will always* play 3 defenders. The loss of a clean sheet irks me far to much to put any extra chance of that happening on my team sheet.

Super cheap midfielders also tend to be much more likely to pitch in in a more predictable manner so it's pretty much 3-4-3.

I agree. Plus the cheapest benchable players are defenders, allowing for better budget allocation elsewhere, whether that's 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.

      Classic 3-4-3.

You always have to have that element of flexibility and if Kane goes mental then it will be tough to chop the team to get him in, but we all see good value in the game this year.

Just wish there was a good 4.5 midfield fodder.

Exactly my thoughts - I can build a 532 purely from players that I actually *want* and don’t seem to be a gamble, why argue with it?

I think some people are dismissing the third striker spot much too easily. Having two such quality options in Zaha and Arnautovic @7mil, surely means that this year we can afford three strikers. Still able to then spread the cash better throughout the team than in previous years. There aren’t any better options in midfield @ 7mil than those two either

As I posted earlier today, I want to pick the players I deem to be essential value, and go from there. This could lead to any formation.

All things being equal I will probably go three at the back simply because it is much less fun (and more stressful) waiting for a clean sheet to come in than it is to hope that my attacking players score.

I look at picking value, not formations. Whatever formation that ends up in, it doesn't matter. They all work. 5 at the back worked for me last season, as did 3 at the back.

      3-4-3 as always.

I feel like every year *this* is the year to ditch 3 at the back and every year it...is not.

Some merit to starting with 4 given the doubts over some premium options post world cup, but you're just a few attacking bandwagons away from hits/early wildcards.

Since there are a lot of good 5.0 options must have one of them and Wan-Bissaka at 4.0. Kamara at 4.5 is not ideal, but I am not going to downgrade a premium def to get someone like Austin or Barnes.

I’ve got 3 premium defenders and will probably be 442 most weeks with a 4.5m defender playing. I’d normally play 343 with a cheap defence anyway, so I’m basically getting a 6.0 defender who plays like a midfielder instead of a 6.0 midfielder who does hee-haw.

Depends entirely on whether or not Zaha stays at Palace for me.
If he does then it'll be 3-4-3, if not it'll be 3-5-2. My 3 defenders in both formations will be premium so I have flexibility to bring in my bench defenders for a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 if required and they have good fixtures.

        2 heavy hitters in mid
        1 up top.

Probably start the season with players suiten to play either a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Dont want to speculate as to how things will be on a seasonal basis. Can see both budgetfriendly mids and strikers coming good this year, which might cause a large variety of formations to be viable. Happy to take it as it goes.

I don't believe in formations. I believe in putting out my best XI depending on form and fixtures. To be fair my current draft has a non-playing 4.5 striker, so it'll be 1 or 2 up top, but otherwise formation could vary every week.

Austin looking reasonably nailed in a 3-5-2 system? If he remains fit, looks potentially good value for 6m.

If both players repeat their best fpl season, which?

      A. Azpi 175 points, 6.5m
      B. Luiz 132 points, 5.5m

Note, the above Azpi played 400 approx. more minutes, probably equivalent to about 20 points.

the first Conte season they got a lot of clean sheets and last season he got a lot of assists - personally don't think either will happen this year (I'm fairly convinced Robbo and Mendy will outscore him, as will Alonso imo)

I can see us being less defensively solid this season meaning fewer cleanies, but then again if Dave is playing RB he might actually get enough attacking returns to make up for that.

People seem to downplay Azpi every year, yet every year he's one of the top 3 scoring defenders. nailed, baps magnet, picks up assists here and there - what's not to love? ('cept the price).

If those 2 numbers were repeated then Azpi provides more value, however 175 is pretty much a ceiling and at best can stay the same. Luiz's score could potentially increase. would only need to score 16 more points to match Azpis value.

If he gets 160 points he'll be worth it and if Luiz gets 130 points he'll be worth it too. Better value than elsewhere on the pitch. Nailed top 5 defence defenders always end up being value even if not very sexy. The only risk is Chelsea adjusting to new system.

Why not go for Lascelles if you're paying 5.0 for a Newcastle def? I'd prefer Pereira in any case given Newcastle's fixtures.

i always like just having 1 nailed on keeper rather than rotating. Schar is a no - terrible fixtures and think they will struggle. I've also got Pedro but likely to bottle it and get someone else.

I think so. He can work either as a conventional left back in the 4-3-3 or as a wing back in the 3-5-2. Either way he is going to get forward a lot, and his delivery gives City an important new dimension to their attack.

Delph (and even more so Danilo) didn't have great deliveries last season so Sane was relied on a lot to provide width on the left. Mendy will make City's left flank harder to predict for defenders.

Does anyone think that the prevalence of inside forwards, AMCs, false nines and defensive forwards in 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 which are far more popular than 442 these days mean that strikers are now overpriced?

Should we be sacrificing a forward slot to fill up on midfielders who are basically forwards now e.g. Salah, Hazard and Sane?

Or maybe even sacking two forward spots off and loading up full backs who are basically wingers in modern football?

        Foster

        Mendy - Robertson - Coleman

Richarlison - Salah - Jota -Sané

        Arnautovic - Auba - Zaha

        (Fabianski - Cedric - Ward- Wan-Bisakka)

Good to go? Feel that I’ve managed to come up with a quite balanced squad, but not sure if i need another premium midfielder/striker.

          Looks good, very template
Sunday's game will tell you about Mendy's nailedness, Chelsea's defence always a good alternative.
Also, I'd prefer Mahrez to Sané as I think he's fitter and will be more nailed early on
Cedric won't start the season imo

It seems Cédric isn't really a good 4.5 def to start with, lack of match fitness and competing for his spot with Targett. Is Hoedt (at 4.5) the better and more nailed cheap alternative into the Saints' defence?

True Mike. Utd though only scored 6 goals fewer than Spurs, a side with a reputation to be free-scoring. With Sanchez on form, which he is, and with his first summer rest in six years, and with Pogba actually being used in his best position thanks to Fred, the 68 goals from last year could feasibly go above 80 (Liverpool got 84)
