Fantasy Premier League managers were able to learn a great deal about how they should build their 2018/19 squads from Sunday’s Community Shield final.

While the top-flight champions looked primed and ready for a new campaign it was a less than convincing performance from FA Cup winners Chelsea.

We’ve gone over the match in fine detail to work out what the implications are for Gameweek 1 of FPL.

CHELSEA 0-2 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero x2 (Ā£11.0m)
  • Assists: Phil Foden (Ā£5.0m), Bernardo Silva (Ā£7.5m)

Sergio Aguero (Ā£11.0m) is likely to receive a boost in FPL ownership this week after his brace won the Community Shield for Manchester City. Despite only returning to training last week, the striker looked sharp, fit and ready for a new campaign after only sporadic involvements with Argentina at the World Cup. He began the day in 13 percent of squads but roughly two hours after Sunday’s full-time whistle he had reached 15 percent ownership.

Aguero’s FPL pedigree combined with appealing City fixtures will continue to make him a popular signing between now and the Gameweek 1 deadline. However, there are no complete guarantees yet that he won’t be subjected to the same type of rotation Pep Guardiola operated last season, with Gabriel Jesus (Ā£10.5m) also available now. Aguero could conceivably start against Arsenal in Gameweek 1 and then be benched against Huddersfield in Gameweek 2, so there does remain some selection risk over him. Meanwhile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Ā£11.0m) could still offer more starts at the same price-point. Although, there was also encouragement from the fact that Aguero played 80 minutes and was allowed to play roughly a quarter of an hour alongside Jesus, who came on for Riyad Mahrez (Ā£9.0m). If Guardiola does opt to use the 3-5-2 formation in the league then Aguero and Jesus could both become viable options once again.

It will be interesting to see if Bernardo Silva (Ā£7.5m) or Phil Foden (Ā£5.0m) can build on their minimal ownership this week (1.4 and 0.1 percent respectively) after both of them impressed against Chelsea. Silva, in particular, was a stand-out performer who provided the assist for Aguero’s second goal. With Raheem Sterling (Ā£11.0m) and De Bruyne still not back in training there are plenty of opportunities up for grabs in central midfield early on and Silva and Foden could provide cut-price routes into City’s attack, with that Gameweek 2 home match against Huddersfield in mind.

ā€œ(Phil Foden) ready for the Premier League, we was last season and now he has one more year experience. It’s so good for us. Right now it’s Bernardo and 10 more, but it’s about what you do over the season. In this moment Bernardo is far above the other guys.ā€ – Pep Guardiola

Mahrez had a fairly quiet introduction to life as a Manchester City player but did show some promising signs for the season ahead. He found plenty of space on his right-hand flank, proving a useful outlet for the Citizens’ attacks and was also on set-pieces in the absence of De Bruyne. It will obviously take some time for Mahrez to be completely integrated into Guardiola’s system but given that he appears to already be able to find space to provide goal threat, we can probably expect good things for him in 2018/19. Also of note was the fact that Mahrez switched to the left after Leroy SanĆ© (Ā£9.5m) went off the pitch.

The German attacker may well experience a drop-off in ownership between now and the Gameweek 1 deadline. The midfielder’s absence from Germany’s World Cup squad this summer made him a key target for Fantasy managers and he came into the Community Shield final as the third-most owned player in his classification (19 percent). However, SanĆ© managed just 45 minutes at Wembley before being subbed off with a knock – and he looked fairly sluggish too, his first-touch letting him down on more than one occasion. That performance came after comments made by Guardiola last week that he still has more work to do to be ready for the new season. His start at Wembley was actually his first of pre-season and his half-time withdrawal means that he has only accrued a total of 107 minutes.

Pre-season excitement over Pedro (Ā£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (Ā£4.5m) was somewhat quelled by a largely anonymous performance from both players. The latter found some space on the edge of City’s box early on but was limited only to a pair of speculative shots. Both options seemed unwilling to challenge full-backs Benjamin Mendy (Ā£6.0m) and Kyle Walker (Ā£6.5m) for pace and were, therefore, not as effective as they could have been. Furthermore, Willian (Ā£7.5m) made his Chelsea return at Wembley, replacing Hudson-Odoi in the 59th minute while Victor Moses (Ā£6.0m) was once again used as a second-half substitute for Pedro, further complicating the issue of predicting who will start in the front three for Gameweek 1, let alone in the weeks beyond that.

As expected, Chelsea’s new 4-3-3 system seems to have hampered the Fantasy potential of Marcos Alonso (Ā£6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (Ā£6.5m). The two of them were deployed as the full-backs in the four-man defence and were not as forward-thinking as they were last season. Obviously, we must point out that they may see more joy on the attack against lower quality opposition but the pre-season signs about their prospects are still not particularly encouraging. Anyone wanting to invest in the Chelsea defence would do better to save Ā£1.0m by going for David Luiz (Ā£5.5m), whose start at Wembley made him the most-used defender this summer under Sarri (289 minutes).

However, whether it will prove to be a viable strategy to cover the Blues’ back-line remains to be seen. Chelsea did not look at their best at Wembley and such a flat display will have given plenty of confidence to Huddersfield Town that they can cause a Gameweek 1 upset. After that it’s a new-look Arsenal for Chelsea in Gameweek 2, with a fit and firing strike pairing of Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette (Ā£9.5m) both looking good in pre-season so far.

In fact, looking to Chelsea when they are clearly still adapting to Sarri’s style may not be a sensible idea. The former Napoli manager himself admitted there is much work to be done.

ā€œWe have the idea to press, but sometimes we don’t press how we should. We have the idea to control the match but today we did not control it. Next week we have a game but I prefer just to train with the players. I arrived here three weeks ago & I’ve not seen at the moment six of the players, so it’s very difficult. It depends on me, it depends on the players, but I don’t know (how long it’ll take).ā€ – Maurizio Sarri

As was the case before the match, there remains plenty of uncertainty over who will start at centre-back for Man City at the Emirates Stadium next weekend. John Stones (Ā£5.5m) and Aymeric Laporte (Ā£5.5m) were the preferred pair for the Community Shield but both Nicolas Otamendi (Ā£6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (Ā£5.5m) staked their claims by appearing as second-half substitutes.

The full-back areas feel more settled for City with Benjamin Mendy (Ā£6.0m) and Kyle Walker (Ā£6.5m) playing on the left and right respectively in this one. With Fabian Delph (Ā£5.5m) and the injured Danilo (Ā£5.5m) the alternatives in these positions, it seems likely that they, alongside goalkeeper Ederson (Ā£5.5m) are the more risk-free investments in the City defence. Mendy, in particular, impressed at Wembley, making some good overlapping runs and backing up our recent claims that he could be a powerful Fantasy asset in 2018/19.

CHELSEA XI (4-3-3): Caballero; Alonso, David Luiz, Rüdiger, Azpilicueta; Barkley, Jorginho, Fabregas (Drinkwater 60’); Pedro (Moses 79’), Morata (Abraham 69’), Hudson-Odoi (Willian 59’).

MANCHESTER CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Bravo; Mendy, Laporte (Otamendi 86’), Stones (Gomes 94’), Walker; Fernandinho, Foden (Diaz 75’); Mahrez (Jesus 66’), Bernardo, Sane (Gundogan 45’); Aguero (Kompany 80’).

Masuaku should at least get game time. Hudson-Odoi if you're feeling brave šŸ™‚

Wasn't even on the bench against Betis: https://www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk/news/2018/august/match-report-for-cardiff-city-vs-real-betis-on-04-aug-18/?utm_source=premier-league-website&utm_campaign=website&utm_medium=link

Cresswell is preferred to Masuaku imo.

Stephens looks the safe boring option.

Would be happy with a secure 2 or 3pts to step off the bench.

Brighton are tight at the back, so always the chance of that extra CS pt with Stephens. 6 YCs is decent for a DM, and even got 3 assists. Nothing glamorous, but seems the best of a bad bunch.

Not sure that there's "the best pick" at any price bracket. There could be MORE THAN ONE great option.

If I was going to play 342 or 442, I'd spend 0.5 more for my 5th mid.
The reason is 4.5s will bring you consistently 2pts each whilst 5.0M mids may bring more points -- some good options are Cairney, Costa, Hughes, etc.

Fair point, especially when the prices of Sterling and Sane have been increased. But he still wasn't that predictable explosive option like the City wingers were. He would be a great FPL Draft pick, but in FPL, he may test your patience.

I'm with you on this one. Its not like his numbers werent good enough last season, and he could also improve (he took a looooooooot of shots). If he doesnt, your likely to Get 5pts on average each gameweek. I think thats okay, when you consider the certainty he comes with.

Because they got lured into Sane, before settling on Sterling, who actually gave you no reason to swap him, cuz he wasnt as prone to rotation as one would have thought.

Now, this season, all other citymids are more expensive and more prone to rotation, at least presumably, than KDB

Agreed, and you had Firmino, Salah, Coutinho (till Jan) and D.Silva as alternative/cheaper/consistent point sources.

The 8-9m price range is a bit barren this year imo and I'll likely give KDB a run.

Mid price mid fielder punt to open the season:

    Moura or B. Silva?

Both seem to have a window of opportunity to perform and have shown form in the preseason. Anyone care to make a strong argument for or against either?

I can only speak for myself... I prefer a player who scores goals, even against the little clubs. Confidence is so important... Look at Morata - great player, great support, but just can't put the ball in the back of the net at the min. Low confidence.

I won't lie King does not give me huge confidence, but the fixtures do look attractive. It's him or Arni really.

That’s a very fair point. The reasons for this is:
          1) I don’t like rotating keepers
          2) I want Robbo and Mendy so don’t want a MCI or LIV keeper
          3) De Gea is too expensive
          4) Leno or Cech is still uncertain
          5) ARS have 2 rubbish opening fixtures

Hopefully Pickford goes to Chelsea and then I’ll go with him instead!

Arsenal is not good as u think.
Concede more than Burnley and Newcastle.
Last season, four 4.5 goalkeepers outscore Cech. The same can happen with Leno.
The fewest or 2nd feweat clean sheet in top 6.

last season was a defensive anomaly for arsenal (albeit the culmination of an ongoing trend).

signed 2 defenders, a defensive midfielder and a new GK

and more importantly, a coach who will focus on their defensive game. expecting full mean reversion on arsenals defence this season.

Right now on Fab & Patricio. Fab because he was really good last season and Patricio because I keep seeing him in a lot of teams and imagine that Wolves will concede quite a few shots being a promoted team & all. Burnley's keepers have consistently done well so hoping Wolves might be similar.

Likewise. But I'm going to get rid of one of then for a 4.0 because i doubt I'll be able to predict the right rotations.

I wanted Fab but I can't see many clean sheets for the first 10 weeks. That didn't seem to make a difference to his points last season, but until I understand better how he managed it I'll go with Patricio as there's surely clean sheets in their fixtures.

Still undecided. Ederson has spent a lot of time in my team, but everyone wants Mendy now... Just want a City defender/keeper as I see even more clean sheets for them this season.

Set and forget. Currently with Ederson. May find a way to switch to DDG. Really hoping Chelsea sign Schmeichel (or Pickford - unlikely) so I can have them as a 5.0 permanent keeper.

Stek as back-up to whoever I go for.

      2. 4.5 and 4.0 for Keepers.
      3. 99% as frees up funds nicely elsewhere. Just need to decide on which one given the Fab or Adrian debate.

Might look to take a punt with Caballero plus a 4m GK, pretty confident that Caballero gets to play GW 1 no matter what coupled with all the rumors surrounding Courtois leaving and it might just be worth the risk, the transfer window shutting a week early in England compared to Europe might be doing Chelsea no favors this season.

We'll know Chelsea's full squad by Friday's deadline so it's a low key punt for now, at 5m he's an easy switch out if they do bring someone in.

If he doesn't he 3 more penalty saves than some other 4.5s, then he may struggle to beat them this season, especially towards the beginning of the season with poor fixtures.

Ederson CS = 6 or 7 points. Prefer the attacking potential of Mendy, one assist and a CS and it’s 9 to 11 points.

And dont want to double City def because we can only have 3 players from the same team, as you know.

Thats the only caveat I see about owning Ederson, and thats why I dont have him

Hey Gummy Budgie, I'm going with Fabs and McCarthy too. Although Fabs/Bettinelli appear to be a better rotation, I prefer Southamptons defence to Fulhams. They're a great rotation all season. Fabs always up there for top saves points. McCarthy played most minutes pre-season, and according to some Saints fans here he's deffo number 1 choice.

Ryan and 4.0 or Ederson and 4.0, depending on how a few outfield players end up looking. With Ryan you should get a clean sheet every few games and more money for the more profitable positions. With Ederson you have the cheapest access to City's points.

De Gea. Reasoning is I still feel he's the best way into Utd defence as no chance of rotation. In addition, Utd defenders don't have the same attacking value as Liverpool, City, Chelsea or Spurs so it makes sense to me to cover Utd with the keeper and save defender slots for those teams where there's a greater chance of attacking returns too.
