FFS Cup

The first round draw for the second FFS Cup of 2019/20

Qualifying for our second open-to-all Fantasy Premier League cup competition of the 2019/20 campaign took place in Gameweek 28.

Fantasy managers who registered their teams and scored more than 36 points (after hits) qualified for round one automatically, while those who scored exactly that only progressed if their overall rank was 209,451st or better.

Nine of our former winners also submitted entry forms and were handed a bye to the first round. They were: Joe, Gribude, Sleeping master, Wild Rover, Leon Harris, A Manager Has No Name, TH14, Lokomotiv and reigning champion Philman.

A total of £300-worth of prizes are on offer as usual in this tournament, with a full breakdown towards the bottom of this article.

FIRST ROUND DRAW

The full draw for the first round can be viewed here.

Our former champions were all kept apart in the draw for the first round.

Philman‘s defence of his title gets underway with a tie against Baps Sniffer.

Wild Rover will take on bitm2007 in Double Gameweek 29, while Gribude is set to face Gilbo88.

Joe has to overcome PELA0409 in order to progress to round two, meanwhile.

The other ties involving our ex-winners are Rolls-Royce v Lokomotiv, TH14 v Pirate Angel, Sleeping master v Lulli XI, Saubarna Deep v Leon Harris, and A Manager Has No Name v spurs.

Our very own andy85wsm (aka Let’s Talk FPL) will take on Carlton Palmer, while editor DavidMunday815 squares off against Binny.

Three of the 512 managers in the first round of the FFS Cup lie inside the top 1k.

rdamjam, who sits at 78th in the world, is the highest-ranked manager in the competition and will face Wayne.burrows this weekend.

Our two other site users in the top 1,000 are prbaker1980 and Bury94, who take on moderator RedLightning and Chara’s Rangers respectively.

ALLSTARS, the Fantasy manager who squeaked into the 512th and final qualification spot, will play Kangaroos in round one.

stamfordbridge, who finished fourth in the first FFS Cup of the season, has been drawn to face Id.

HOW DO THE CUP COMPETITIONS WORK?

The FFS Cup is very similar to the Fantasy Premier League’s own cup game.

Entrants who qualify for the first round were randomly drawn against each other and the winner of the tie is whoever has the highest score from that Gameweek, minus points spent on transfers (like in the original game and in head-to-head scores).

In the event of a draw, the manager highest in the overall FPL rankings after the tie will progress.

WHAT IS THE GAMEWEEK SCHEDULE?

The FFS Cup competition will be played out according to the following proposed Gameweek schedule:

Fantasy Football Scout Cup Round Dates
Qualifying – Gameweek 28

Round 1 – Gameweek 29
Round 2 – Gameweek 30
Round 3 – Gameweek 31
Round 4 – Gameweek 32
Round 5 – Gameweek 33
Round 6 – Gameweek 34
Quarter-Final – Gameweek 35
Semi-Finals – Gameweek 36
Final and third-place play-off – Gameweek 37

WHEN ARE THE FIXTURES RELEASED?

Where possible, the fixture list for each round will be published before each Gameweek deadline.

Given Spurs win Norwich tonight, would you settle for this team in BGW 31 without using the FH chip??

    Doherty TAA Rico(i) Kelly(i)
    Salah Mane Richa
    Jimi DCL

Could also take a hit for someone like Pope/Traore/Patricio/Pickford/McNeil

    Thanks.

A few reasons to be careful with loading up on MCI and ARS assets this week:

    1) they don't play in GW31 - unless you plan to FH in GW31, this is likely to mean an extra -4 or playing less than 11 men in that week.

    2) A FH is more likely to be valuable in GW34/37 than GW31 - to field a DGW BB players in one of 34/37 and another 11 in the other is going to require a FH. Otherwise, you are going to be probably be short of 5 or 6 players. Liverpool playing in GW31 makes it more easily planned for.

    3) there are other options with good games this week - people are taking out options like Ings vs Newcastle, Vardy vs Villa and Mane vs Bournemouth.... these players could easily haul this week!

    4) rotation - Man City players (and some Arsenal too) are highly likely to be rotated across the two games. Who plays both, no one knows.

I like point two - Liverpool & Wolves playing in GW31 makes it a lot easier to field a good amount of players without free hitting.

Point 3 is equally as valid.

Anyone other than KDB and Auba for a hit might not be the most worth it. It really depends on whether you are chasing or leading

DCL mate, yeah there is pool in 30 but its not a lock that everton cannot score against them especially given their defensive form recently.
I am by no means saying Carlo will pull off a win but defo draw or scoring loss is on the cards imo.

Jota is the flavor of the week but i think double wolves attack is too risky , "all eggs in one basket"
Jota and DCL are priced the same or a 0.1 difference at most i think

    A) Barnes + Vardy -> Saka + Auba
    B) Stevens + Vardy -> C. Taylor + Auba

    A) gives stronger lineup for next GW but B) gives one extra player for GW 31 and if Leicester lose today its more easier. But if Leicester win today?

Which transfer plan do you like?

    Plan A:
    Gw 29: Vardy > Auba
    Gw 30: Basham + Ings > Doherty + Deeney (-4)

    Plan B:
    Gw 29: Vardy + Ings > Auba + Jota (-4)
    Gw 30: Gomez + Traore > Doherty + Sarr (-4)

    Hendo Pope
    TAA Gomez Egan Basham Taylor

    Vardy Jimenez Ings

    B. Vardy >> Aubameyang

    The Review - GW 28

Greetings all! Having a tough time deciding what transfers to make? The Review is back as I discuss FPL events, past and future, with a particular eye on the double gameweek:

(Raw data taken from FFScout with permission)

    1) So onto the double straightaway. I guess De Bruyne and Aubameyang being likely to play both are the go to men for either team heading into the double gameweek. De Bruyne picks himself while Aubameyang is the trickier one. His actual output compared to his expected output over a reasonable sample size of ten GW’s suggests slight overperformance, but his numbers off late under Arteta have been improving. Even though the quantity of his shots inside the box are fairly average, he has had at least one big chance in each of the previous four games he has started. Given that West Ham are on the wrong side of most of the defensive statistics that seem to matter, I would suspect Aubameyang is likely to notch there. I think he’s likely to do well without hauling big, so if you have a triple captain I’d save it for the weeks to come.

    2) A very popular question this week has been along the lines of “What is the correct chip strategy, in what order do I use my chips etc?”. The answer to that is that there is no one correct method this year as to how you use your chips. It is all very team specific, so choose the approach which makes the most sense given your own team. This is what distinguishes this season from other seasons where in general the norm has been to follow a consensus reached by the FPL community as to how to approach the chips.

    3) Danny Ings has recorded just one big chance over the past six games, a period in which 16 other forwards have accumulated more shots inside the box than him as well. Regression when you compare Ings’ data post-GW23 to his data pre-GW 23 is apparent – the Southampton forward was recording a shot inside the box every ≈30 mins pre GW 23 (vs ≈47 mins post GW 23) and a big chance every ≈90 mins pre GW 23 (vs ≈379 mins post GW 23).

    4) No midfielder in the league has recorded as many shots inside the box and big chances as Watford's Ismaïla Sarr in the games he has started under Nigel Pearson. He has the pedigree to be FPL gold whenever he starts. At that price, I think he is easily the best midfielder to own.

    5) Matt Doherty has recorded more big chances than the likes of Martial, Son and Richarlison this season. Only Sterling, Salah and Mane have accumulated more chances from midfielders. With the exception of Lundstram, no defender has had even half as many big chances as Doherty.

    6) Six goals in his previous three appearances for Diogo Jota. No surprise he’s also top for big chances in the league over the past two GW's as well. A favorable fixture run including a guaranteed fixture in GW 31, less than 10% top 10k ownership and being a lethal streaky player based on precedent represents the perfect combination of form and fixtures going into the back-end of the season. I’m so high on Wolves this week that I actually think that tripling up on Doherty, Jota and Jimenez for the remainder of the season is a tantalizing prospect.

    7) Leicester's attacking numbers have fallen precariously over the past three games. As compared to a season average of ≈8.92 shots inside the box and ≈2.72 big chances per game, they are now averaging ≈7.33 shots inside the box and ≈0.33 big chances per game over this period. A big reason for that has been the loss in Tielemans’ form who being one of Leicester’s premier chance creators, has been creating a chance every ≈180 mins of late as compared to every ≈64 mins previously. Owners of Leicester’s attacking assets would be ill advised to sell, given that Villa are comfortably top for shots inside the box and big chances conceded away from home.

    8) I feel like I just seem to be copy pasting this into my articles every week but at the cost of repeating myself, Dominic Calvert Lewin was top for shots inside the box of all players in the league yet again this gameweek. As illustrated by the pictorial representation, he is almost on par with Agüero for combined expected goals and assists over the past five GW’s. During the same period, he is joint top for big chances with Firmino and Alli as well. Both Firmino and Alli have only scored once in that period however, which suggests that more goals should be coming their way sooner rather than later if they keep up with their numbers.

Great write up as ever Big Man - not sure number 2 is totally correct though - I remember lots of different strategies used in previous seasons, but I imagine when the dust settles and the spoon feeding starts there will be a singular more popular strategy emerging for this year.

Dead-end 31 probably becomes most popular. WC ahead of 32 over the IB and have the D/BGW34 fixtures confirmed, leaving it known who'll also double in 37.

Thoughts on this wildcard team? Played to maximise this week’s double. Non-double gameweek players have games in blank gameweek 31 so the plan is to use a couple of frees to get an eleven together for gameweek 31 then start building the team for double gameweek 37. Will use free hit for the double 34. Will see who else plays in 31 after tonight’s cup games and maybe swap one or two around accordingly.

    Pope, Stekelenburg
    Alexander-Arnold, Otamendi, Cathcart, Taylor, Saiss
    Mané, KDB, Sarr, Pépé, Saka
    Jimenez, Jota, Aubameyang

I’m holding 3 for now and won’t be dropping any until after 31 at least but think it could be viable for anyone WCing now and able to get enough 31 players in .

I may end up going TAA,VVD,Periera,Doherty or just switch out Periera for Doherty in 31 if Leicester don’t have a game.

Say the following teams have fixtures on BGW31

    LIV vs CRY
    WOL vs BOU
    BUR vs WAT
    NOR vs EVE

Which starting goalkeeper is the best to have? Don't really foresee a plethora of CS. Thinking Patricio/Foster at the moment, but I already have Masina/Doherty right now,

          Nah.

Pope probably the best pick, as even if he keeps a CS, his defenders don't cover him with his love for BAPs. If buying any keeper, it'd be him. I wouldn't be using a FT though if you already have a BGW31 keeper in place.

Using a chip strategy i saw on here by Kuszer, actually.
            To quote-
"What do you guys about the following strategy?
Particularly relevant if you like me don’t have Aubameyang

WC now and prepare both for dgw29(probably no more than 3 players) and bgw31. Just checked- it’s possible to get 9 players (incl. 3 from Liv) and add 2 with 2 FT after 29 and 30.
            FH 34
            BB 37

Think the value of FH in 31 is minimal as you can just wc now and hit both dgw29 and bgw31 and then plenty of time to prepare for BB37"

So I guess Pope would be my WC goalie fort this week, then

What if you don’t have a WC or Aubamayang?

A)Get Aubamayang and FH in 31
              B) Get Jota and save FH

Lol, thanks for quoting me mate.
I’m thinking about going McCarthy Button and Pepe for next 2, and then button Pepe->Pope Richa for bgw31 if that helps.
Alternatively can go straight Pope McCarthy and Fernandes (who I got at 8.1). Easy switch to Richa then

Is Enda Stevens fit for Norwich? I didn't see Wilder's presser and he didn't play yesterday.

Hopefully for Norwich is the last word I've seen.

Presser tomorrow/Friday will help - he should be fairly straight forward.

tough call, I trust Vardy more if fit + you can get another Pool player for 31.

Getting Auba in for DGW seems to mess up the team a little. Will just stick to KDB. Anyone of the same opinion?

Thinking about it. Just need to hope the same West Ham that played at Anfield turn up, but with Fabianski's hands this time.

If Leicester wins tonight, its really close I'll press a WC button. Cant get Auba and only 7 players for GW31. Is that a enough good reason? Or would you take -8 or -12 to get even 10 players out for gw31?

Having 7 for BGW 31 is fine. Many would take a hit just to get 7-8

I wouldn't WC just for Auba and then rearrange ur team thereafter

Looks that almost everyone here going to have 9-11 player for gw31.

Really would like to save a WC to maximalize GW37 and play BB.

        FH anyway going to GW34.

Might just go Salah. Having him on pens if Milly's off the pitch is the dealbreaker imo.

A-Drop Ings and Mane for Auba and Mahrez -4
B-Drop Ings and Mane for Auba and Pepe -4
C-Drop Ings and Martial for Auba and Fleck (keep Mane who I have with Salah) -4

    Which one?

    McCarthy (Button)
    TAA Söyu Saiss Stephans (Rico)
    Salah KDB Fernandes (Grealish Traore)
DCL Ings Firmino 4.0 1 FT

    A. Firmino > Auba
    B. Ings > Auba (have exactly the money, but would have to do it before an Ings injury update)
    C. Traore, Firmino > Sarr, Auba -4
    D. Grealish, Firmino > Mahrez, Auba -4

City attack is a curiosity over the last run of games. They’re very mid table for goals scored despite ok fixtures really but are still right up there for minutes per chance.

KdB tempts me as captain but currently on Mo. Are City due a big one? You need to go all the way back to Villa in 22 for more than 2 goals

(Fancy City to be the form team from here on in. Aiming for a triple up from 33. KdB Mahrez Ederson.)

With no European football, they'll have a free date further down the road.

City have plenty of games to still get played as well as Europe. The 11th is a free date that can't be guaranteed in the future.

If I use my FT for Traore -> Sarr I could field this team:

    McCarthy
    TAA - Boly - Soy
    Salah - KDB - Perez - Sarr
    Vardy* - Ings - Jimenez

    Bench: McGovern, Digne*, Rico*, Hayden

If Vardy doesn't start my only playing sub is Hayden. Would you guys take a hit for Vardy -> Auba to strengthen the starting XI? Feels wrong removing Vardy for a hit before facing Villa but my bench is weak as f***.

    McCarthy (Button)
    TAA Boly Stevens (Dunk, Williams)
    Salah KDB Barnes Mané (Dendoncker)
    Ings DCL Aubameyang

    1 FT. £1.5 ITB.

    No idea what to do!
Has McCarthy lost his place? It does not seem like a smart idea to sell him or Ings before Newcastle at home.
Dunk needs to go but I can wait another week as I'll bench him.

Unless there are news on McCarthy being dropped I would hold McCarthy until GW31 and then swap for Pope.

          Team looks great heading forward!
