Brighton and Hove Albion 0-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Dan Burn (£4.5m) x3, Lewis Dunk (£4.8m) x2, Mathew Ryan (£4.7m) x1

The two-word album review for Spinal Tap’s Shark Sandwich sprung to mind as Brighton and Hove Albion secured their Premier League safety with a goalless draw against Newcastle United.

Chances of quality were scarce in a desperately poor game that had a whiff of ‘pre-season friendly’ about it, although that was perhaps unsurprising given the frequency of fixtures over the last fortnight, the low stakes (Albion were pretty much already safe anyway) and the absence of a crowd.

Interest in these two teams is limited from a Fantasy perspective, with not one player on show having an ‘effective ownership’ of more than 4% in the top 10,000.

Brighton and Newcastle’s opponents in Gameweek 38+, Burnley and Liverpool, are much more in-demand, however, so this would have been a scouting mission of sorts for owners of Nick Pope (£5.1m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m), Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) et al.

On the basis of what we saw last night, there was little to worry FPL managers going big on the Clarets or the Reds – especially at the back.

The Magpies only forced one save out of Mathew Ryan (£4.7m), with the Australia international having to be alert to palm a Miguel Almiron (£5.8m) flick away from goal.

Most of the visitors’ threat came from set plays, with Dwight Gayle (£5.0m) glancing a header over just before half-time and substitute Andy Carroll (£5.4m) nodding an excellent opportunity wide late on.

So long as Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.3m) is fit, then Newcastle pose a danger to any side’s clean sheet and he’ll be the main concern for owners of Liverpool assets this weekend.

The Frenchman recovered from a calf problem to start at the Amex and showed glimpses of his talent but couldn’t do much with what little possession he was afforded, not registering a single shot or key pass.

At the other end of the pitch, Martin Dubravka (£5.1m) saved smartly from Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) and Adam Webster (£4.4m), with the Belgian also hooking a decent chance over in the final quarter of an hour.

A 0-0 was about right, though, and anyone targeting Trossard and Neal Maupay (£5.7m) for this meeting against a patched-up Newcastle defence who were without five recognised centre-halves were left short-changed.

That makeshift backline will be of interest to owners of Salah and Sadio Mane (£12.2m), who will no doubt give it a sterner examination on Sunday.

Danny Rose (£5.3m) and Emil Krafth (£4.3m) played either side of Federico Fernandez (£4.6m) in a back three, with Matt Ritchie (£5.3m) and Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) tasked with wing-back roles.

Steve Bruce said of his side’s display after the match:

Considering the problems we’ve had, I was delighted. The one thing you can’t deny about this group of players is their ability to roll their sleeves up and have a go.

We played two full-backs as centre-backs today and they were terrific. I was delighted with their attitude.

Emil’s got a really sore ankle and did well to carry on, but I think he epitomised the spirit of all them.

Three of Brighton’s backline hoovered up the bonus points, while Tariq Lamptey (£4.1m) has now started six of Albion’s last seven league games and is a budget defensive option going into Gameweek 38+, with Burnley themselves not renowned for scoring an abundance of goals.

The Seagulls may have been put to the sword by the two Manchester clubs and Liverpool recently but against the rest of the top flight, their defensive record is a bit better: Ryan has conceded 26 goals in 25 matches against non-big-six sides, keeping eight clean sheets along the way.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-3-3): Ryan; Lamptey (Duffy 86′), Dunk, Webster, Burn; Bissouma (Propper 73′), Stephens, Mooy (March 58); Gross (Mac Allister 58′), Maupay (Murray 73′), Trossard.

Newcastle United XI (3-5-2): Dubravka; Krafth, Fernandez, Rose; Manquillo, Bentaleb, Shelvey, Almiron (Lazaro 86′), Ritchie; Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 74′), Gayle (Carroll 74′).

Just be here. Folks will link it. I do think we'll get leaked lineups for this last week. So my plan is to hold my transfers and have contingencies based on who's starting for City.

As suggested above FPLscarface has done well recently and says he will prioritise the City line up in 38 but other than that I don't think it is worth risking your teams on newly created twitter accounts claiming to have Pep's line up spot on.

Who would you get for a hit to captain for GW38:

    Sterling
    Son
    Salah/Mane

    Kane
    Auba
    Jesus

Alternatively, can get Mahrez for free and captain David
    silva

Pulisic and Jimenez. No Liverpool mids, and no Tottenham assets so feeling a little scared going without either. Also tripling up on City is an enticing option

FPL BUG - Any advice appreciated!

I run a cash mini league which involves monthly cash Prizes and have noticed a bug in FPL in the way that they calculate the monthly points table filter.

Early on in the season i noticed that anyone in the league who took over a -20 seemed to bug out the calculations as the -20 wasn’t being removed off their month total.

Anything under a -20 was being removed.

When it happened earlier in the season, this individual was still not anywhere near winning the month so I didn’t bother raising it.

But someone took a -36 in GW33 in my league, he also took a -4 and a -12 in GWs 35 and 37 and currently he is sitting top of the month with the tables having taking into account his -4 and his -12, but the bug has happened which has meant the league has not taken into account his -36.

    Anyone aware of this?

Guessing it's the 1st GW of the month so any hits isn't counted.

Any transfer point deductions in the Gameweek before a phase starts won't be deducted from the phase score. For example, any transfers made in Gameweek 4 (preparing for Gameweek 5) won't be deducted from your September score.

Yea something can’t be right because if I check his score in June, the -36 hasn’t been removed from his June total.

If I then check his July total, the -36 isn’t removed from there either.

It’s as though it’s bugged it out and is not accounted for anywhere?

It's a free hit in monthly leagues. They can't take it off for June or July, only come off in overall.

            Thanks for helping.

So that means I can’t accurately run monthly cash prizes because in theory everyone could cheat and use this to their advantage if they wanted to go all out and win the cash monthly prize as right now he has a -36 not accounted for?

Hits tAken the first game week of each month are NOT counted for monthly leagues/scores.This is part of the way monthly scores works, and it's not a bug.

It's a feature that makes each month a fair competition between new teams (who basically play a wildcard the first game week) and already existing teams.

Cant see how it’s fair that he takes a -36 and it’s not taken off? I didn’t take a -36 and am therefore not 1st for the month?

Sounds like you are trying to bend the established rules about monthly leagues to scam yourself a win.

For 'monthly league' to make true sense each month needs to have a fresh start

It doesn’t sound like that to me.

If someone takes -36, it must be accounted for.

                I don’t understand how?

He took a -36 but didn’t use a free hit or wildcard.

He literally took a -36. His other -4 and -12 were accounted for.

I’m not folllwing at all here, this looks like a bug to me.

Well, it's only about a 2 mill. gap between the players I have and the players I want.. And thanks to the dirt cheap CS masters at Burnley, I've got enough in the bank!
A bit worried about Jimmy's wife reportedly going into labor soon. But yeah, leaning more towards Foden --> Dilva, especially since I've only got KDB as other City asset

There’s] a couple of changes I’ve made,’ said Lampard. ‘With Christian Pulsiic he’s got a bit of a small injury issue where there’s a risk in starting him and playing a full game. ‘Maybe he can come off the bench but other than that I picked a team that I think can win the game.’

Looks like Pulisic has a slight injury and FPL should flag him

I wonder if it's possible (and legal) for all 11 to just literally camp in front of goal for 90 minutes. With some contortionism they should be able to cover most of the goal's area. If not, could hire bigger guys?

Tbh I think it's ridiculous that players like Salah, Sterling, Mane and Martial get clean sheet points and extra points for goals (and Auba, who's spent the entire season on the left, doesn't). The game would be more fun if they were all forwards, but it's not going to happen under the current classification system.

Not a chance, Rashford will stay as a striker. Martial will change to a striker. IMO the game would be a lot more interesting if they make Salah & Mane forwards too. Maybe Sterling too. With 20 goals a season, it's hard to argue against it.

      1. Greek Freak

Exactly, great minds... I'd love a world where we could justify a fantasy team that values all aspects of the game, and recognises amazing midfielders like Kovacic, Henderson & Ndidi and even Norwood, Westwood & Neves.

UCL fantasy might interest you because they've tweaked their scoring system - they now give 1 point for every 3 balls recovered. I remember Casemiro got something like an 8 point haul in one match just because he won back 15 balls.

It is messy to sort out to be fair to FPL.

Auba/Salah/Rashford/Pulisic/Son etc, how do you draw the lines between their positions?

Could just stick them all as strikers and everyone goes for a 4-3-3

      1. DRAFTSNAKE
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 1 month ago

They should create a 5th tier for attacking mids imo, between mid & striker. I know this would take a lot of re-thinking but it would be a more accurate reflection the game.
        GK, Def, DM, AM, FW.
        Maybe a squad template of 2 4 3 4 2?
Give DMs the 1pt clean sheet & some tackle/interception points?

Son is Spurs best player and most potent attacker but it doesn't always translate into goals/points. The safe bet is Kane - guaranteed start, 90min, pens, freekicks, etc - but if you are chasing I'm not sure you can warrant a hit. I played my free hit this week 37, and that own goal was annoying. "It was going well wide of the far post before it took a deflection" -- err, yes thanks commo, but have you ever seen a shot bend in? GRRR. I have a feeling they might go super-attacking against Palace and Bergwijn might get a start, but it's a big punt. Anyway, this obviously hasn't clarified anything for you but good luck!

Probably whichever season had the most goals. That year Chelsea scored 104 and Drogba (29 goals) and Lampard (22 goals) would have been in most people’s teams plus Rooney got 26. Bent would have been an enabler who also got 24 goals and Fabregas had a great season too

Nope it was the 2013 14 season

City and pool both over 100 goals and suarez was perma captain for most which resulted in abnormally high scores

Ramsey toure dzeko sturridge gerrard were all excellent that season

A question for next season - would you consider ignoring City assets for next season given the rotation risk and general spread of their points?

I seem to remember a past FPL winner (16/17?) avoided Liverpool entirely when their hauls were randomly spread between Lallana, Milner, Firmino, Coutinho and Mane.

Does this suggest it would be viable, or does this City team just score so much heavier than that Liverpool team that it's asking for trouble?

KdB should be virtually nailed regardless anyway given no more David Silva.

With the rest I don’t know, I think the team I will want will mean I can only afford KdB anyway.

Man City could easily hit 100 goals scored again and their players are right up the top of points scored.

The juice is worth the squeeze.

I have been cityless quite a few times this season.

Can have a very beefy starting eleven without City.

With the 5 sub rule we may see lots of rotation and subs from most teams, Pep the most difficult to figure out though. Rather kit out each starting eleven position and still a decent bench with no City and you could be well on your way.

The 5 sub rule needs to be voted on and passed I think, can't see anyone other than the top teams voting for

This has been Pep's worst season in his career all things considered.

Pointless rotation roulette is something he needs to change next season IMO.

absolutely viable, Mark doesnt have any city and the top guy in my ML has only had KDB from city all season and no city since the restart

I seem to remember a top 10 finisher last year not having mane all season or something like that and made me think on routes to the top.

Not having a players from a team which rotates and spreads points is totally viable.

This is not a good point. Mark hasn’t had the best season, hasn’t had KDB once this season and relied on Sterling a lot earlier in the season when he wasn’t on form.

Maybe for part of the season. I think Magnus Carlsen took them all out on his GW13 WC this year and only brought some back several weeks later. But not when they have a fixture run like their recent one (sou, NEW, bha, BOU, wat, NOR).

People talking about leaked lineups in 38 - how soon before deadline would we expect maybe to see them?

Is there a chance the website goes down from all of the traffic?

I am pretty sure we will have an idea of the City GW38 team after tonight. Whichever attacking assets start probably will be benched 38.

        Not all of them.

Think he starts Foden Sterling Mahrez up front today, with KDB and Bernardo behind. Jesus coming in for Sterling after 60, Dilva for KDB.

And KDB and Sterling could still start in 38

If I go for a premium defender, which of these two do you prefer?

    A. TAA+Bardsley+Salah+Jesus
    B. Robbo+Branthwaite+Mané+Auba

    Martinez
    Pieters, XXX, XXX
    Sterling, Dilva, Martial, Antonio, XXX
    Kane XXX

Personally, I want maximum differential power so I'll be going with Robbo + Mane. But it may depend on your goals.
