Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) could prove to be one of the most effective budget defenders in Fantasy Premier League this season.

The 21-year-old defender looks certain to fill the gap left in the Wolves team by a long-term injury to Jonny Otto (£5.5m).

The Spaniard is unlikely to feature for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men for an extended period following an operation on his damaged anterior cruciate ligament, injured against Olympiakos earlier this month.

Preliminary estimates indicate that Jonny may not play until 2021, which could unlock Vinagre’s FPL potential as a set-and-forget budget option.

After two years as an understudy on the left-hand side of Wolves’ wing-back system, Vinagre finally has a chance to string together consistent starts in 2020/21. That could see him surpass his 24 and 32-point total scores from the two previous campaigns by a considerable margin.

In fact, Vinagre may even act as a powerful differential in the early weeks of the campaign provided we don’t see massive ownership shifts between now and Gameweek 1. The left wing-back currently sits in 11.7% of Fantasy teams, roughly half the ownership of Matt Doherty (£6.0m).

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), owned by 56%, is currently the only more fashionable defender than the Republic of Ireland international and the heavy backing for Wolves’ right wing-back could see Vinagre slip under the radar for those outside the hardcore Fantasy community.

This article serves to bring the Wolves youngster into the light, examining what he produced in fleeting appearances during 2019/20 using some key underlying statistics.

As this article uses Opta data, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

Are Wolves defenders worth owning for 2020/21?

Get ready to make transfers in that slot. None really stands out for various reasons, but at least two will be on a hot streak with confidence at any point of the season

Knowing when to make transfers there can be problematic, but it might be the best use of that slot in hindsight

For now, I've got eyes on Antonio, Mitrovic and Wood

Ayew was superb last season at around 5.5.

Kept overlooking him as wanted other forwards more.

          Not so this year.

Last season I saw that I didn’t pick a single Palace or West Ham player. If I give into pressure I could be starting this season with three

Ayew definitely works for the patient managers, but still can get outscored by Doc and Laporte, so doesn't feel like the best long-term use of 6.0m

Agree with Ze. Below 8.5 there's nothing worth having; conversely, from 8.5-10.5 (if Kun is fit) there are loads of decent options. It's caused me to restructure and go with 2 decent strikers rather than a decent and a mid-priced one.

Surely Antonio stands out for me. Imho he could be one of greatest value this season. Was really surprised to see him at 6.5. Wood could also be a good option. He had the xG of 17 last season, very good for that price imho.

Obviously fixtures dependent, thoughts on this team BOTTOMED

Saliba - strong feeling he will start under Arteta
Son - Underpriced considering last season and new leadership role
Ziyech and Werner - Both is a stretch but stats don't lie, big descion but may pay off
    Mitrovic and Soucek will rotate

    Ryan
    TAA / Vinagre / Saliba
    KDB / Bruno / Son / Ziyech
    Werner / Antonio / Mitrovic

    Nyland / Dallas / Ferguson / Soucek

Is it just me, or are a lot of people massively overlooking Salah? I've seen so many teams with KDB/Auba/Bruno but no 'Pool. Top scorer in 2 out of last 3 seasons - almost guaranteed 20 goals and 10 assists and could easily hit 250 pt mark imo. Maybe more now he'll have all the pens with Milly being more of a squad player.

      Guys

See comments here like "VVD will outscore Mitrovic" with general thought that defenders are provides more value rather than forwards. Agree with this.

But then, you are restricted to formation.

Yes we have good defensive options at 4.5 (Vinagre, Taylor, Ayling, Diop etc.). But are there similar priced forwards? No. Can we go 5-5-0 then? No. Can we play 5-4-1 with for example Jimenez on top? Yes, but two 4.5 up front too risky as you will gain no points for forward once your starting forward is out. This logic suggests that we have to got 2 forwards. To minimize the damage on budget at least one of them should be Mitro or similar...

      Thoughts on this?

Yes i agree and all my drafts are along this line of thought. Def are scoring well at the moment.

        3 x premium def
        3 x premium mid (10.5 to 12mil)
        1 x mid price fwd (6.5mil)

Just light up top I suppose but have a cheap playing fwd (5.5m).

"Once your starting forward is out" is probably based on a bias from the three or so times it may have happened to you in five seasons. See this: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2020/08/15/how-will-new-positions-at-man-united-affect-their-fpl-assets-in-2020-21/?hc_page=13&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_22252128

And yes, you can go 5-4-1 with one striker who's known to play at least 10 minutes in every game of the season (Ings, Mitrtovic, Kane, Jimenez last season) and who would most likely have injury news come out BEFORE the deadline, letting you transfer him out. This means you might need your 4.5m benched forward with his 0 to 1 points somewhere between none and twice throughout a season. This 0 and 1 points will come at around the same frequency (or less) than red cards, penalty misses, and 4 goals conceded or yellow + 2 goals conceded for defenders

          1. Lucky Z
            • 8 Years

I want to cover other positions as well not only forwards. Having 2 dead 4.5 means I cannot replace MFs and DFs if they are out as well. Not speaking about blank GWs postponements etc.

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 7 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

I'm not sure how realistic this is

You can replace MFs and DFs with other MFs and DFs. You can change formation if there's no viable MF/DF replacement. Once you factor transfers in, team structure goes out the window. TAA can get injured and everybody moves the funds to attack, for instance. Or all the premium mids go off the boil and transfers are made to the 8.5m region in attack

You can also use transfers to upgrade one or both 4.5m FWDs at any time, if you eventually feel they'll outscore your 4th/5th defender/mid, or you can downgrade your main striker and make them two firing cheap forwards

How does starting with 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 affect your ability to transfer your mids and defenders?

              1. Lucky Z
                • 8 Years
                5 years, 3 months ago

                Not transfer.

You suggested formation with two 4.5 strikers. They are on bench. And do not play. Let's say TAA and Pulisic are injured. Who will come in for them? I will take Taylor Ayling Diop etc. But in case I have two non-playing 4.5 strikers I receive 0

                1. Ze_Austin
                  • 7 Years
                  5 years, 3 months ago

The chances of two nailed players getting injured or not playing a single minute off the bench are very, very low. Slightly lower than that forwards, near impossible for keepers, but still very low elsewhere. If you know you have at least two players who aren't nailed (say, Foden, Shaw, Mahrez, Agüero, Armstrong to go with KDB/Sterling), then the 4-5-1 and 5-4-1 formations will not work for you

I should also point out here that your second sub is usually not expected to contribute more than 2 points (or can get negative points as they're most likely defenders) on the already rare occasion that you'll need two subs (outside fixture congestion), giving you an upgrade from 0 points for a non-player to around 6 to 12 points if you get lucky... Throughout the season

This pales wildly in comparison to having a 6.0 to 6.5m striker for 90+% of the season who you feel will be outscored by the likes of Doherty and Laporte

The fear of those two or three times all season you'll need a second sub affects your score for the 30+ times a season that you'll need more points from your XI

Yes I agree, going Jiminez, Antonio, Davis.
Someone in the 6 - 7 bracket will emerge as a decent option.

See this and the previous article:

Depends on the sole striker. Jimenez - and Vardy for that matter will play every game. If the striker gets injured you switch him for Ings or whoever. I think saving 1.5 on dumping Mitro or Adams in order to strengthen your midf and defence is a better allocation of budget.

I'd like to do that but there is the point about going 1 up top and then he misses a game, I suppose it could still prove worth it but what I took from Hedge's articles is that it looks better at the start of the season to go 1 up top but then someone emerges to make 352 a better formation. I suppose I could go 1 up top until that striker emerges but then it is extra transfers to shift it around.
If the rumoured WHU v Liverpool first fixture is true, I'll be playing 541 anyway if I stick with Soucek and Antonio.

Is Greenwood that massive a downgrade from Bruno?

Greenwood offers fantastic value and should United not sign a forward, I think most of us will have to find a way to get him in.

That being said, Bruno is their best FPL asset. Although there remains doubts about the sustainability of his points, I think the general feeling is that you rather transfer him out if he does poorly as opposed to tearing your teak apart to transfer him in if he continues this level - and get huge red arrows in the process.

So for that reason, B for me.

What’s the chances of robbo out scoring taa this year, surprised he’s only 10% owned

      1. Chandler Bing
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 3 months ago

I'd say very slim. Not only is TAA better going forward, he's always quite consistent with delivering from set pieces. Guaranteed 2 goals from FKs a season.

      2. Davido989
        • 15 Years
        5 years, 3 months ago

I think TAA will be the highest scoring Liverpool defender and by a margin which justifies his price.

My personal opinion is that Robertson has hit a level in which he cannot exceed by that much, whereas TAA's potential is yet to be shown.

TAA takes more corners, is now scoring FKs and *if* Thiago signs, I'm pretty sure he'll be finding Trent and Salah quite with his customary diagonal switch from deep left central positions.

All things considered, my order of Liverpool defenders is TAA, VVD, Robertson.

That's not to say they all won't score well, they probably will.

Agree with that order, the stingy git in me is wondering if Gomez at 5.5 is worth considering as an alternative to VVD though. 1.0 less and presumably(?) secure for a little while.

Ah yeah, forgot about him. Looks the spot is his to lose and should be no rotation until the first round of CL at least. Absolutely zero goal threat though, which you're probably aware of.

Yeah, with Gomez you'd have to be purely in it for the clean sheets which the price reflects to be fair.

Would love to start the season with TAA and VVD but I did exactly that last year and you only kept about 2 clean sheets in the first 11 games and conceded 1 in each of the others, it was infuriating.

You think? I think he's priced about right - premium defence with little to no goal threat. I know he takes up a Liverpool spot but there's only so much money available.

Trouble is you have far more attacking defenders for the same price (eg Aurier) or cheaper. I think anything over 4.5m for a center half isnt money well spent. There are some exceptions in VVD but he should be a 3-5 goal per season so very different story.

As someone with same front 7, my view is that without a direct Silva 'replacement' signing, he's more likely to come into the side, particularly easy home games (as he did in re-start). When he does start, I expect him to do v well.

At 6.5, I'm happy to accept occasional 1-pointers either via half-time hooking or via 20 min cameo.

From my superficial glance through people's drafts almost everyone is looking for a way to get at least one Man Utd attacker and nobody seems to be looking at their defence. I'm doing the same thing as it stands but it's easy to forget they only conceded 36 goals last season (just 3 more than Liverpool) whilst scoring 66 (1 fewer than Leicester).

Do we think the signing of Fernandes/emergence of Greenwood has now transformed them into a free scoring team or is it just recency bias because they had that great patch of fixtures after the restart? Or do we not care about any of that because team performance is irrelevant, only individual players (it's probably this one isn't it)

Regardless, Luke Shaw (5.0) could be an interesting option.

This is kind of my point though - are they leaky or is that just how we see them?

Only Man City (35) and Liverpool (33) let in fewer goals than Man Utd (36) last season.

Only Wolves (47) allowed fewer big chances than Man Utd (50). Liverpool allowed 64...

Their performance last season was that of a premium defence and there are routes in to it for 5.0. Interesting that we're almost all ignoring it is all I'm saying.

No options like Liverpool defensive trio or Doherty

This. I am considering Brandon Williams for rotation - because he's 4.5

Noone with the attacking threat to go with the clean sheets you mean? That's fair. Price reflects it though so depends what you do with the extra money.

This might be the end of my cunning Ritchie plan...
If the move happens, C Wilson will be back down to 6.0 or 6.5, right?

He might be what Magpies need. I'd expect 6.5m.

      Guys

One more point to mention in regards to my previous post.

Don't you think that recent reclassification and logic for positioing (Auba, Rashford etc.) make giving 3 spots to forwards too much? In fact, So many positions to be classified as MF (DMF, CMF, R/LMF, AMF, now wingers) and only lone forwards and second strikers are classified as FWs. We assume that other than Everton there is 1 FW is general formation of most clubs. This gives as 10% space for FWs in real life (GKs aside). And what happens in FPL? 3 from 13, more than 23%!

I think FPL should adress this and give one forward slot to MF (6 MFs, 2 FWs) with option to have 3-6-1.

      Your thoughts, please.
