Can Aaron Ramsdale prosper in FPL and will he affect Sheffield United’s defence?

There will be a different goalkeeper between the posts for Sheffield United next season.

Dean Henderson (£5.5m) has returned to parent club Manchester United after two years with the Blades and Chris Wilder has moved quickly to replace the departing loanee, snapping up Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) from relegated Bournemouth.

In this Moving Target article, we’ll assess the new shot-stopper’s prospects in Fantasy Premier League ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and whether the changing of the guard will affect Sheffield United’s clean sheet potential.

Ramsdale returns to the club he represented as a youth and has signed a four-year deal with the South Yorkshire side, who reportedly paid around £18.5m to land the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Upon sealing the deal for Ramsdale’s services, Wilder said:

The goalkeeping situation is something we have to make sure we get right.

This is not about Dean, it’s about bringing Aaron in, but Dean was outstanding for us for two years. We know a lot about Aaron, we’ve watched him develop on loan at Chesterfield and then AFC Wimbledon and obviously we’ve watched him this season too.

I’d like to thank the board for their backing given the situation. Aaron is certainly amongst the best young goalkeepers in this country and we are delighted to have him.

The new Sheffield United number one said himself:

I spoke to him [Wilder] after the fee was agreed and a couple of days later he just said, ‘are we getting it done?’

I knew him, all of his coaching staff and Darren Ward [United’s goalkeeping coach].

It’s a place I always come back to and see friends if I ever get time off over the weekend and family members are only about an hour and a half away, so I get to see them more regularly as well.

Knowing the place, the training ground and the people so well, it definitely feels like home.

The History

Born in May 1998 and still in the embryonic stage of his professional career, Ramsdale hadn’t had any playing experience in the top two tiers of English football before 2019/20.

He had originally joined Sheffield United from Bolton Wanderers in 2013, progressing through the Blades’ academy system and graduating to reserve goalkeeper ahead of the 2016/17 season.

It was, fittingly, Wilder who handed him his senior debut, with the-then teenage custodian making two starts in the opening rounds of the FA Cup in late-2016.

Although Ramsdale didn’t make a single league appearance for the Blades, Bournemouth had already seen enough and snapped up the young shot-stopper for £800,000 in January 2017.

Over two years were to pass before he played a single competitive game for the Cherries and, in between, he was sent out on loan to Chesterfield and Wimbledon.

Ramsdale made 39 league appearances across those two half-season loan spells and it was in the second of them, with the Dons in League One, that he really caught the eye, keeping seven clean sheets in 20 starts and winning their 2018/19 Young Player of the Year award despite only joining the club midway through the campaign.

Returning to the south coast and featuring prominently in pre-season under Eddie Howe, Ramsdale was given the nod between the posts in 2019/20 and went on to start all but one of Bournemouth’s 38 league fixtures.

He kept just five clean sheets (no team registered fewer shut-outs than the Cherries) and conceded on 62 occasions but, as we’ll soon discuss, that was as much a reflection on relegated Bournemouth’s overall defensive shortcomings as it was an indictment on Ramsdale.

Indeed, only a fortnight ago, fans of the Cherries voted their former goalkeeper as their Player of the Season.

Thoughts on this current pre-season draft

    McCarthy
    TAA Vinagre Dier Saliba
    Aubameyang Salah Son Saint-Maximin
    Werner Jiminez

    Nyland Soucek Ferguson Davis

Could downgrade soucek to a 4.5m, which gives me a bit of extra flexibility going forward.

Why bench boost when you can likely do it with 15 DGW players later in the season? Also means you have to use your WC early..

Main reason is that I find it stressful to have Benchboost to play because it changes my thinking around transfers etc.

But yes of course I'm hoping for an early points lead! 🙂

Currently looking at benching Greenwood and AWB - slightly cheaper version. Needs a 4.0 to be nailed to work - Mitchell is most likely if PvA is out imo. Ferguson will be a punt going into GW1 either way

Don't really rate United defence but those end of season returns from 25 on were sensational. GW 2 is a great fixture for defence and if it looks poor by 4 or so I can shift money back to get another premium defender (Doh/VVD/Robbo) or forward ti upgrade Mitro or Soucek

If PvA is out Mitchell is all but nailed imo - he's very much next in line.

Alternatives are Riedewald (tried and failed) Schlupp (hasn't played there in an age) and Ferguson who'd be on the wrong side.

PvA was due surgery a month back and I haven't spotted him in tarining photos and I think the rehab period after surgery is several weeks

Devils advocate here, but will repeat what I've previously posted:

You're essentially handicapping yourself by 10% of your budget, which will mean your points total will be, on average, 10% behind the typical £100m team.

Are you getting Bruno in for the long term? Say 5 weeks? If so, a 4pt hit is equivalent to less than 1pt a week - if Bruno will outscore who he replaced by over 4 points in 5 weeks then its a no brainer transfer, even for a hit. I think he does outscore everyone in his price bracket by that much so I would absolutely take a hit to have him in.

Similar to mine. I have Pereira for Soucek, and Dier or Davies (undecided) for VVD, which are the main two differences. I also have Rodak in net, liking Fulham's fixtures and hoping he'll be the new Etheridge - but I may well revert to McCarthy or Ryan, we'll see!

A little different than most on here:

    McC
TAA - Vinagre - Egan (or Dier)
Salah - Son - Ziyech - Armstrong (or ASM)
    Kane - Jiminez - Ings

Big up front and lighter in the back. Initial transfers would likely be Salah and Son to Bruno and KDB, and probably Kane to Werner unless Kane is doing well. Jimi or Ings could trade down to this year's Pukki and beef up in the mid or back. Seems flexible. Thoughts? Weaknesses?

I don't really rate Ramsdale much as a keeper. He did little to impress me last season for Bournemouth. I also think Sheffield United will struggle next season. They will struggle to score and without Henderson I don't know if the defense will be quite as resilient. I don't think they'll get relegated, but I think they'll be closer to 15th than top half.

      Almost exactly like mine.

I'm just gonna start with Fernandes though. Saves me a transfer. I will begin with Justin or Thomas from Leicester and play him over that Son slot.

Son for one week against Everton isn't worth a transfer imo.

That's a very decent plan and definitely one to consider.

I don't want to tempt myself. Because if Ziyech or Pulisic score I'm gonna want to hold on so badly and it will ruin everything haha. Bruno vs CPL will be my captain and I don't really want to veer.

Also, the way I consider it...

Pulisic, Ziyech or Son would have to score more than Justin + a transfer. I value the transfer more. Would be really nice to roll it or use it on an upcoming bandwagon. Roll it then in GW 2 I can do Aubameyang out and I'd have two FTs to use - probably like Auba > KdB. Soucek > Klich or something like that.

I agree Ziyech or Pulisic have the potential of ruining the plan and I also really want Bruno for GW3.
That's a great plan tbh and it's definitely worth considering for me as well as I could be frustrated by Soucek or Armstrong by GW3 and wouldn't mind using a tranfer on them. Sensible thoughts. Cheers!

I like it but Justin isn't nailed for long, Vinagre also could face competition with Wolves looking for a LWB. Saliba is still unknown we'll have to see if he's nailed.

That's why I like the security of going with Doherty easy to downgrade and easy to upgrade to a Pool def if doesn't work out.

I can't think of a more boring way to play FPL than benching Utd or City players.
There's nothing more exciting in FPL than attacking GW1 head on.

Get all your cash on the pitch or spend your saturday afternoon playing bridge with your granny instead.

Problem is there aren't many standout options in GW1 so I think you could get away with benching one of the City/United assets.

I accidentally put on the last article. Sorry

I’d really rather not have to waste transfers on 4.5m defs because they’re not as nailed as we thought. Of the 4.5’s am I correct in assuming.

    Nailed:
Taylor, KWP, Lamptey/Webster, Dallas, Vinagre (unless LB signed)

    Not nailed/Temporarily starting:
Justin short term(due to Evans injury), Ferguson(4m, unless another signing?)
    Saliba

    Thanks in advance

Manchester United have had more arrests than signings during the summer transfer window.

      Decent call

Just trying to minimise transfers are that pay grade - the likely upside doesn’t seem worth it unless forced. Prefer long haul options if at all possible

    Any mods around?

Does anyone know why, in the Player Comparison in the member's area, the comparison data is no longer side by side?

On Chrome and Internet Explorer on my mobile, the Comparison lists Player 1's stats and heat map first, and then lists player 2's beneath that.

Best 5.5 midfield option to rotate with soucek and 4.5 defenders?

    A) ASM
    B) Armstrong
    C) Someone else

    Best 5.5 defender?

    A) Tierney
    B) Aurier
    C) Gomez
    D) Someone else

    Team with 3.0 ITB

    McCarthy

    Vinagre TAA Justin (Ferguson,Saliba)

    Son Auba Salah JWP Ziyech

    Adams Mitrovic (Davis)

Plan: Mitrovic,JWP TAA and McCarthy are season players for me. Auba is out after GW2 and Ziyech and Son follow soon after when I get 2 FTs. Last to go is Adams who gets replaced by Wood. Saliba for mitrovic for GW1 if I think Saliba starts.

Why McCarthy as a season set&forget rather than Pope - is it costing for your strategy? Initial fixtures are better, but if you're keeping for the season ...

ziyech, soucek, werner & mitro are relatively unproven in FPL, hence their price. Could work out great, but a little too much of a gamble with so many unknowns?

    Thoughts on this!?
    1.5 ITB

    McCarthy 4.0
    Trent Vinagre Saliba Dier Ferguson
    Salah ASM Periera Auba Gordon/4.5
    Werner Kane 4.5

    GW 2: Periera ➡️ Greenwood
GW 3: Auba ➡️KDB.. trying to think what else to do that week

    Ryan Nyland

    TAA Doherty Azpi Davies Ferguson

    Salah Rashford Saint-Max Armstrong Soucek

    Kane Jimenez Bamford

Will play 4-4-2. Want to bring in Chelsea assets but need to see how they set up, Want to bring in City assets post Wolves. This preserves flexibility.

    Thoughts?

    McCarthy, Nyland

Should I try and get Bruno in to bench in GW1 over Greenwood? How would you recommend doing this?

Does anyone ever take every single player out of their squad just to see if they actually have 100 million to spend after looking at some of the other RMTs? I do.

Honestly, not quite sure how some people pull it off. Always seems like I'm 1 or 2 million from getting a decent-ish squad...
