Fantasy Premier League managers got a look at Liverpool and Arsenal assets in pre-season friendlies on Tuesday – learning a lot ahead of the new campaign.

While there is only so much to glean from matches such as these, we were able to see the latest issues in Liverpool’s defence as well as get a fix on the goalkeeper situation and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s positioning at Arsenal.

We have detailed these in full in this latest Scout Notes article…

SALZBURG 2-2 LIVERPOOL

  • Goals: Rhian Brewster x2 (£4.5m)
  • Assists: James Milner (£5.5m), Curtis Jones (£4.5m)

Fantasy managers may start to think twice about doubling-up on Liverpool defenders for 2020/21 after another poor performance at the back for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

During Project Restart, the Reds conceded 20 big chances, the sixth-worst in the Premier League. And they were equally porous in the 2-2 draw with Salzburg on Tuesday with the youngsters salvaging the draw after the first-team disappointed in the opening hour or so.

The Austrian side went into half time with a 2-0 lead against Liverpool side that featured three of their first-choice defenders Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joe Gomez (£5.5m).

They were not helped by Fabinho‘s (£5.5m) mistake for the first goal, where he was dispossessed in a dangerous area.

Filling in for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) again, Neco Williams (£4.0m) was absent from his station for the second goal in an inconsistent display, while Gomez’s poor passing was also a factor in Liverpool going 2-0 down.

“I could see the problems we had but I wanted these problems to fight against it. And then when the kids came on and (James Milner) came on, we didn’t think about the problems we had, we tried to find solutions.” – Jurgen Klopp

It was not the best afternoon for van Dijk either, who struggled to cope with the defensive lapses occurring around him, before coming off in the 55th minute with a cut to the eye. While Klopp revealed the injury was nothing serious, the question marks over Liverpool defence continue to grow.

“Virg only looks like he has a piercing now and has a plaster on it. It should not be, and is, no problem.” – Jurgen Klopp

At the other end of the pitch, Mohamed Salah (£12.0m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Sadio Mané (£12.0m) were all far from their exciting best as well.

Firmino was not involved as much as usual, a laid-back outing seeing him replaced by Takumi Minamino (£6.5m) at the break. Meanwhile, Salah’s judgement in the final third was a little rusty and Mané could not convert a close-range chance before both players were taken off just after the hour.

By contrast, Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) turned a few more Fantasy heads with another exciting second-half display.

The former Swansea City loanee bagged both goals as Liverpool came back to draw 2-2, taking his pre-season total to three in two appearances.

Both were well-placed powerful finishes, the first from a James Milner (£5.5m) squared pass, the second coming after a Salzburg clearance was deflected into his path by Curtis Jones (£4.5m).

Whether Brewster’s performances have been enough to seriously challenge Firmino’s starting berth for the Community Shield final remains unlikely, but Klopp has been, understandably, impressed with what he has seen of the player.

“Rhian (Brewster) is a young boy and he knows he can learn a lot of things but he is a natural goalscorer. That is what he is. Yes, he was involved a bit but in the decisive moments, he is 100 per cent there. I like the kid and it is all good. He scored three in two games, that is not bad.” – Jurgen Klopp

Either way, this was Liverpool’s last pre-season match before facing Arsenal in the Community Shield final on Saturday afternoon. As things stand, their key players at both ends of the pitch may have to improve if the Reds are to put on a decent performance in the competitive audition for Gameweek 1 inclusion.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson (Adrián 63′); Robertson (Tsimikas 63′), van Dijk (N Phillips 55′), Gomez (Koumetio 63′), N Williams (Hoever 63′); Fabinho (C Jones 46′), Wijnaldum (Grujić 63′), Keïta (Milner 46′); Mané (Brewster 63′), Firmino (Minamino 46′), Salah (Elliott 63′).

MK DONS 1-4 ARSENAL

Nketiah straight back in Arsenal team after suspension
  • Goals: Mohamed Elneny, Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m), Mark McGuinness, Reis Nelson (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Bukayo Saka (£5.5m), Nelson

Fantasy managers were given a first clue to the Arsenal goalkeeper situation for the new season in a 4-1 win at MK Dons on Tuesday.

Despite impressing during Project Restart, Emiliano Martínez (£4.5m) was not involved at all at Stadium MK while Bernd Leno (£5.0m) returned from injury to play the first half.

Matt Macey was used in the second period. As a result, there will certainly be plenty of attention paid to Arsenal’s line-up when they face Liverpool in Saturday’s Community Shield final.

However, if Martínez’s Fantasy appeal took a hit from the MK Dons game, at least managers can still consider William Saliba (£4.5m) in the same price bracket.

The former Saint-Etienne loanee was selected in Arsenal’s back-three in Buckinghamshire and, even though it is hard to take too much away from a defending against League One opposition, there was also promise of what he could offer going forward.

On more than one occasion, Saliba carried the ball confidently out of the defence, starting the process that led to Arsenal’s second goal.

As yet, there are no guarantees that he will be a regular starter at first, and we will have to keep an eye on the Community Shield final team-sheet, but Saliba will surely feature heavily in the long-term.

There is, of course, plenty of interest in how the front-three will line up for Arsenal, with this win in Milton Keynes offering some clues.

Aubameyang was stationed on the left flank, as he was for much of last season, with Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) occupying the centre forward role likely to be vacated by Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5m) and Bukayo Saka (£5.5m) on the right-hand side.

Of the three, it was Aubameyang who had the quietest afternoon, while Nketiah was on the end of things enough to score and have a goal ruled out for offside. Saka was arguably the key man displaying the energy and commitment one would expect in a competitive fixture, providing the excellent cutback for Nketiah’s goal.

It was mostly youth players involved in the second half but Reiss Nelson (£5.5m) certainly made his case for greater involvement in the Arsenal first team. Coming on for Aubameyang at half-time he was full of direct and purposeful running, winning the second-half penalty which he converted.

Meanwhile, there was a 61-minute outing for Mohamed Elneny, returning from a loan at Besiktas last season. He was one of Arsenal’s best performers on Tuesday, showing accuracy in the pass and scoring too, so it will be interesting to see if he sticks around long enough to earn a £4.5m price-tag in FPL…

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno (Macey 46′); Tierney (Olayinka 61′), Saliba (Ballard 46′), Holding (McGuinness 61′); Maitland-Niles (Willock 46′), Elneny (Cottrell 61′), Xhaka (Azeez 61′), Cédric (Bola 46′); Aubameyang (Nelson 46′), Nketiah (John-Jules 61′), Saka (Smith Rowe 46′).

I like team B, almost identical to mine. I think with having greenwood already it should put us in good stead. And help to not take a hit where a few people will be. I might bring in Bruno for Salah or Aubameyang as well in gw2,

        Don't think I will.

Desperate for him to join us, can you imagine someone of his quality at Everton... But he's played so few minutes in recent years, he'll have to be eased in surely.

Honestly one of the most challenging FPL picks in a while... I've seen and heard so little of him that it'd need to be a 7.0 to be in my team from the jump. Outside of that its a wait and see.

Was just catching up on the FFS podcast with Joe and price points, really interesting stuff.

Seems there's a lot of potential options around 5.5 - Saka, Trezeguet, Schlupp, Kilch, Costa, Keita, ASM, Armstrong, Podnece - all of whom could hit some sort of fantasy consistency this season.

Keeping a 5.5 spot in midfield to pivot between those when the best option emerges seems like a canny idea?

I really like Trezeguet, because he is really gained momentum at the end of the season and apart from Liverpool he has great fixtures. There is a rotation risk but given his end of season form he will start, and if he fails then you would transfer him out anyway. The fact that 4.5M defenders like Vinagre and KWP can cover his blank makes him very viable.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to stretch to 8 to have son,Auba, salah, ziyech but having a 5.5 helps the rest of the team a lot just hard to know which one will start well

          • 10 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, picking the right one is difficult then odds are you're using a transfer to get the one that emerges...

...assuming the one that "emerges" is the right pick. There's some right dud bandwagons early on costing points and transfers. The likes of Ings and Vardy didn't immediately emerge (though some did have foresight to pick, though perhaps then sold)

I don't really think any 5.5 midfielder is worth it for now. I actually never liked that price bracket, it's usually just better to get 5.5 or 5.0 defender. Out of those I think the greatest potential have Saka (if he becomes nailed and plays on the wing. I really like him, he's a very talented player imho), ASM (but only if he plays as forward) and Keita if he is nailed. Maybe Armstrong but not so sure.

Liverpool were also 'shaky' in defence this past preason. Preseason is preseason.

Very unfortunate to have lost Alisson early on in the season as well. Let's face it, once the title was wrapped up Klopp took his foot off the pedal.

Once the new season starts it will be business as usual.

I'm in the same boat- either Son or Ziyech to another 5.5 (got Armstrong already) would let me pick up an 8.5 striker with the latter, or an 8.5 and defensive improvements with the former... very, very difficult decisions.

It's all fun and games until TAA has a week like Leicester away last season and you rip your team up to get him. If a midfielder was getting TAA's points for 7.5, you would not think twice about owning. I will have him from GW1 until 38 barring injury.

Careful with Greenwood, looks a great finisher but hard to keep living up to his current overperformance. IMO Trent is an absolute must-have, but definitely agree Gomez>VVD, doubtful for Robbo.

depends on how I approach it, but if it's a downgrade to Bruno GW2 I'll probably chance a Mane(c) GW1

Also considering that, I suppose the decision is either to have 1.5m and a transfer tied up in someone you're downgrading or 10.5m on your bench, I'd rather have Mane over anyone else as a one weeker though.

Through out last season Mane was scoring better than Salah until Mane missed out a couple games where Salah was deployed more centrally where he scored around 16 in both of the games Mane missed that was the only thing that took his points tally over Mane

Salah (1st) vs Mane (2nd) in matches they both started last season:

                  Played - 27
                  Goals - 12 v 14
                  Assists - 6 v 7
                  xG - 14.05 V 13.4
                  xA - 5.89 V 5.5

See below. I wanted him for sure but it means forgoing having Bruno from the start (obv on bench in GW1) and nkt sure I like to have to plan in a transfer before the season even starts

I’ve just not been massively impressed with him recently or Spurs in general aside from Kane’s recent form uptick.

I get the appeal of the fixtures though and if you do catch Son in a purple patch he can reward you nicely

Think I’m finally happy assuming no transfers/injuries/line ups..

      McCarthy - Nyland
      TAA - Davies - Vinagre - Justin - 4.0
      Salah - Auba - Pulisic - Greenwood - Soucek
      Kane - Nketiah - 4.5

Bank the FT and look to bring Jiminez and KDB following weeks. Werner could also be an option.

Mitchell was always much better call than Ferguson. PvA coming back means he’s likely short term now. Riedewald may be a threat too but RH preferred Mitchell there last season. Next match will be the one to watch

Much less bullish about Mitchell than before - think PvA is probably only a few weeks out.

Ferguson is the more likely of the two midterm but wouldn’t fancy him before WC if you’re thinking start minutes. He needs not just to get fit but also displace Ward - not a given straight off. Possible for GW6 on perhaps when Palace sit top of ticker - could even be differential then

For me that 4m slot may have to be a very late decision, but it's a heck of a risk if your Starting line-up depends on one. Mine's for the bench where he can't do any harm. From GW2 when the big boys arrive, I won't even remember him.

I think this will be the way I start off in GW1.

Bruno waiting on the bench for GW2 and hope that Auba does well in first couple but not so well that he stops me wanting to get in Sterling/ KDB!

All thoughts and comments welcome. I did want Son but it means ripping everything else up!

      0itb
      McCarthy
      TAA, Doherty, Justin, Mitchell
      Salah, Auba, ASM, Soucek
      Werner, Mitro
      (Nyland) (Davis, Bruno, Taylor)

Obviously there is no bench for GW1 but the squad and selections become much improved from GW2 (Bruno and Taylor coming in) with no wasted transfers.

      Cheers

Have a look at Doherty's stats from 1-29 and then 30-38 (post lockdown). There was a notable regression in his attacking involvement. I don't think Boly at 5.5 is a bad option, nailed, good for BPS when they keep a clean sheet and picked up a few goals the season before last.

Yep you aren’t wrong and I had been looking at his drop off in performance. I just believe he has the quality to regain form but possibly it’s enough to have Boly and upgrade Soucek to one of the 5.5s.... hmmm

I think Traore playing more through the middle has had an impact. Initially when Traore was playing he was playing on the wing and allowing Doherty to become an auxiliary forward and get plenty of shots in the box but now it seems Traore occupies central ground meaning Doherty is more of a traditional wing back.

Interesting point. Maybe it’s partly a fear around starting a season with such a cheap defence (except Trent)! But maybe that’s the way forward (no pun intended!)

Similar to me bud. How guaranteed is Mitchell to start do we think? Didn't start in what seemed their starting line up yesterday.

Anyone who thinks messi is leaving for free is dreaming.

The legal ground is on Barcelona's side. Messi's lawyers have a massive fight on their hands to try and justify their stance around an expired clause. You cannot just say oh but the season ended late because of a pandemic. That's not how contracts work. I recall a certain luis Suarez who thought he could leave liverpool for arsenal based on a contractual misunderstanding. His advisors were also incompetent. The letter of the law in the contract is paramount. The clause is no longer active according to the stipulated date in the contract. I dont see how Barcelona let him go without a substantial offer and neither should they have too.

Barca will also not want a massive lawsuit dragging onto in the season though.

If he was to leave, I can see it being a fee similar to Ronaldo to Juve.

I agree, if anything Barca will lower the price of the buyout clause then whoever wants him need to pay up as the buyout clause is now in play after the season ended. His contract only expires in 2021 so it cannot just be torn up. After his contract has ended he can leave for free.

Cannot see Messi wrangling himself out of this.

        Pushing that clause means either
        i. they keep Messi against his wishes, a £50m p/a player who wants out
ii. they stop Messi from playing active football anywhere else
Either option is a PR disaster in unprecedented scale. They may or may not have the legal ground on their side (I'm not a lawyer, guessing you're not either) but actually exercising it to the full extent will have repercussions they can't afford.

        1. MYNAMEISBigtopmark.sman
          • 8 Years

They wont want to keep him if he is adamant about leaving but that does not mean they just let him go for free.

They will try and sell him and they are right (I think) to do so. Messi is still the best player in the world and could be for another 2 years. They will never get 700 million for him but I would not be surprised to see someone pay 200 million. I wouldn't but someone will.

Him leaving for free is just ridiculous. It's a ridiculous clause and it has expired.

All I hear from the other side is "good faith", "special circumstances"

Barcelona's is a much tighter argument because you just follow the letter of the contract.

This is why I bring up Suarez who got caught out by clever wording. "If we receive a bid of over 40 million we must consider it." His side thought that was a release clause in "good faith". Liverpool followed that contract to the letter and won. So will barcelona.

And no I am not a lawyer. But it takes no genius to see messi needs a miracle to get out of this one for free.

Messi isn't stupid, he wouldn't have made the decision if he didn't know it would work. Every reliable journalist has said he's joining City, FIFA essentially backed up Messi's argument too, so I'd start preparing that 14-15M hole in your midfield ASAP

I expect him to join city. Just not for free.

Covid messed this up. He did expect it to work because in a normal season it would have but this is gonna drag on unless city pay up.

I would fill that 15 million hole with actual players. You can always get messi in on wildcard when window closes.

I figure I'll upgrade Salah and downgrade Kane when the time comes, but early days yet. It depends on how the legal body sees the contract, different scenarios around. I'm sure he'll leave this window too, I believe it'll be for free from the quotes I'm noticing but lets see.

Nothing is clear cut when it comes to contract law. Simply put, Messi's lawyers would have to show that the date in the contract was intrinsically linked to the normal conclusion of a season as would have been reasonably anticipated when the contract was concluded, and therefore the fact that the season extended meant the cluase date extended as well. Barca, if they were to contest, would have to show that the specific date had nothing to do with the natural seasonal cycle and was chosen for other specific reasons. The other issue that would come into play would possibly be force majeure, but I don't know how Spanish law deals with that (I'm also assuming the contract was signed in terms of Spanish law - it may be under some other jurisdiction for tax purposes).

Oh, and of course, there may be some brinkmanship involved - not sure Barca would want Messi's contract details aired in open court - may cause other players to question their deals and also impact contracting with any new players they want to sign.

Eze to Palace moving closer, hoping for 5.5 but expecting a 6.0.

Would appreciate people’s thoughts on this.

      A) Doherty, Soucek, Werner
      B) Vinagre, ASM, Kane

      Thanks!

With so much competition for premium places in the team, is anybody else considering going without any Man City assets until GW10? Could be a great time to wildcard them in at the expense of United/Spurs players who have some pretty great fixtures at the start of the season

Ya I'm going without until one of them becomes essential. Hopefully Foden.

Could make an absolute mockery of that £6.5m price tag!

Wondering if there's actually an oppurtunity with City assets.

Take a poor GW1 on the chin, but then have them at your disposal from GW2

I am not considering any Man City at this point. It is all about KDB and with the wealth of options in midfield, you can go without KDB.
