Wolves 2-1 Chelsea

  • Goals: Daniel Podence (£5.4m), Pedro Neto (£5.7m) | Olivier Giroud (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Owen Otasowie (£4.5m), Vitinha (£4.8m) | Ben Chilwell (£6.2m)
  • Bonus points: Podence x3, Neto x2, Chilwell x1

GIROUD NOT TO

Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) is fast becoming the key Fantasy Premier League forward at Chelsea as Timo Werner (£9.4m) continues to struggle in wide areas.

The former Arsenal striker scored the Blues’ only goal of the game as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Wolves, the second in his last three Premier League starts.

And if you go back to the beginning of Project Restart, no Chelsea player has found the net more often than Giroud (eight goals), who is working his way back to the top of the pecking order.

The Frenchman has started each of the last three Premier League matches for Frank Lampard’s side, lasting 90 minutes once and having his minutes managed around the 70-minute mark in two of them.

Any last remaining Werner owners who like the look of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures West Ham (home), Arsenal (away), Aston Villa (home) might do well to consider his signature – especially considering the German international is without a goal since Gameweek 8 and has blanked three times in the last four matches.

TRANSFER TIMO?

Werner’s biggest problem in recent outings has been how isolated Chelsea have left him on the flanks of the front-three, whether or not Lampard stations him on the left or right-hand side.

Against Wolves, Christian Pulisic‘s (£8.2m) first start since Gameweek 11 pushed Werner onto the right, where even his most insightful of runs were regularly ignored by his team-mates.

So much of Chelsea’s play went down the left-hand side through Pulisic who did provide some cut and thrust but, very soon, it became predictable and one-dimensional.

But the nail in Werner’s FPL coffin came after Lampard switched his wingers, allowing the former RB Leipzig man some time on the left of the front-three, only for Chelsea to send everything down the right-hand side through Pulisic again.

“Pulisic provides us with some width and he’s very good at winning his one-on-ones. He’s had a few issues with the hamstring but he’s trained so he’s straight back in.” – Frank Lampard

It is certainly worth adding that Chelsea sorely miss Hakim Ziyech (£8.1m), Lampard’s side resembling the laboured outfit from the early weeks of the season during the Moroccan’s last injury.

“No (there wasn’t enough) after the goal. We didn’t hang on either. Performance (has changed). It’s what gives you results. Maybe the lads think they’re playing well and the second you think you’re playing well, anything can happen.” – Frank Lampard

CATCHING A CHILL

Despite a recent speight of clean sheets, Chelsea’s defensive credentials have taken a knock in their last two matches.

Between Gameweeks 6 and 10, the Blues conceded just one goal, letting in three since the start of Gameweek 12.

Giving up a lead at Molineux given Wolves’ current state of affairs is also rather alarming.

Before Tuesday night, they were yet to find the net in a game which Raúl Jiménez (£8.2m) had not started this season.

Not including Fantasy assists, the Mexican was involved in a significant 31% of Wolves’ 109 Premier League goals since promotion before Gameweek 13 – so he has been a huge miss.

Accordingly, when Daniel Podence (£5.4m) cut inside Reece James (£5.3m) and Ben Chilwell (£6.2m) and fired past Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) it ended Wolves’ longest run without a Premier League goal since their promotion in 2018 (296 minutes).

Wolves chose James’ flank as one to target as they wound through the gears in the final third of the match, the right-back escaping a penalty thanks to the VAR, but leaving Kurt Zouma (£5.7m) exposed to a Pedro Neto (£5.7m) run in the closing stages.

The Portuguese winger came into Gameweek 13 inside the top five best-value midfielders of the season (offering 9.6 points per million spent) and, by netting at Molineux took his attacking returns tally there to four in his last five.

Whether Chelsea’s defence can be trusted against West Ham is, of course, now under scrutiny in the Fantasy community while upcoming meetings with Aston Villa (home) and Manchester City (home) are also somewhat ominous.

Chilwell might have done enough to earn a stay of execution though, topping this game for key passes thanks to his involvement in corners and Chelsea’s persistence on playing the ball down their left-flank, producing his first attacking return since Gameweek 8.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Saïss, Coady, Boly; Marçal, Neves, Dendoncker (Otasowie 46′), Semedo; Podence (Vitinha 90′), F Silva (A Traoré 61′), Neto.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): E Mendy; Chilwell, T Silva, Zouma, R James; Havertz (Havertz 71′), Kanté, Mount; Pulisic, Giroud (Abraham 71′), Werner.

FH in 19 means you are most probably overlooking 3 Spurs vs shu, Podence vs WBA and some Villa vs Pickford. I still think BB is the better way to navigate it as you can still play your 2/3 Spurs.

There are a couple of teams in 19 that have amazing DGW but you probably wouldn't want them in your team long-term, so I'm considering FH19:

      Leeds: BRI, SOU
      West Ham : BUR, WBA

DGWs for Pool, UTD, Chelsea, and Spurs having shu means could be a great week to pick a "perfect" FH XI.

    Bottomed.

KDB + Brewster => Souček + Kane makes sense for free?

Also leave me 0.3 for Mitchell => Lewis

    Mendy
    Chilwell | Targett | Reguilon
    Salah | KDB | B.Fernandes | Son | Grealish
    DCL | Bamford

    Forster | Dallas | Brewster | Mitchell

Would you take a hit to bring in a keeper who has a DGW in 19 to be able to play BB?(maybe McCarthy), my other keeper is Mendy so it would be useless to rotate them later which would mean another transfer to sell the keeper... might as well play BB without a 2nd GK?

I will have 6 DGW and 7 BGW players (plus Forster and Brewster) after my planned transfers before GW15 (I will bring Kane for GW15-GW18 regardless of DGW/BGW situation).

I do not want to use my last WC this early in such a turbulent season so BB is not an option for me. Which of these two makes more sense to you?

    A) Use 3FT (and a hit) to build up a team with 10-11 playing for BGW18, Free Hit at DGW19

    B) Use 4FT (and a hit) to build up a team with 10-11 DGWers for DGW19, Free Hit at BGW18 and TC at DGW19 (probably Salah)

My team is currently split with 6 players from the teams with dgw and 5 from those with blank gw. I think the teams having a DGW are better than those who have a blank gw. So I will use FH gw 18 to keep the other players long term. Only Kane Son DCL can be set and forget in my team despite their single gw.

    3. thegaffer82
      • 14 Years
      5 years, 6 months ago

I feel FH in DGW can give a bigger upside in that moment. But, that means carrying a lot of probable dross in your team before and after the BGW.

My initial thought is FH in BGW

  16. Shark Team
    • 8 Years
    5 years, 6 months ago

I think only FH in gws18-19 is the right choice for me. (Maybe TC too but in the end of the season it's easier to guess which player is gonna haul cause there are more to play for)
I usually want to combine my 2nd WC (1st played gw5) with Bench Boost but it's impossible to do this combo for gw 19 cause there is blank gw 18 right before.
I should take lots of hits to field 15 players in gw 19 and then play WC gw 20 but I don't like it ...
So probably it's just FH gw18

    1. NABIL - FPL otai
      • 13 Years

Things will be a bit tougher for me since I already wasted my FH in GW11 lol. Nonetheless I think I can ride out GW18 with 6/7 players and BB/TC 19

For those going with the FH18 + BB or TC GW19 approach
Are you really going to fill your squad with WestHam,Leeds and Southampton players? That will require a WC to clean the mess which imo is too much chip wasted for a DGW.

For a TC approach there's no issue at all, as there won't be a need to stock up on players from teams you don't want.

      Why?

Defs from those teams are 4.5 so easily rotatable in the future on 3rd-5th slots.

Attackers are also all good value.
      Bamford/Raphinha
      Antonio/Bowen/Soucek
      Ings/Adams

        • 9 Years

Definitely those players are decent but how many of those would you pick if you WC with no DGWs? Currently I have 2 Leeds players and no WH or Soton and I would not like to add 2 players from those teams just for the sake of DGW. I think I am more into TC rather than BB.

        1. jomikijiq
          • 10 Years
          5 years, 6 months ago

I'm also more into TC Salah, but would probably BB if I still had first WC.

Looking at something like this for DGW19.

          Meslier
          Chilwell, Matip, Dias*, Balbuena
          Salah, KDB*, Bruno, Son*
          DCL*, Bamford

4 SGWers, but I think I'm okay with all of them.

            • 9 Years
            5 years, 6 months ago

That's a decent XI. But you would tear it apart if you had a WC and the question is how much long-term would that team be
Salah, Bamford or a Chelsea player are among candidates for me for TC

    3. GreennRed
      • 14 Years
      5 years, 6 months ago

Nah. 9 or 10 starters for BGW 18 then maybe a few hits for DGW 19. I think a free hit is more upside in a DGW than a BGW.

That's not easy to answer because you want to pick players beyond GW19, the midpoint and not want to be using your 2nd WC too early because you've hedged on players in BGW then took hits to skew for DGW 19. Pick some quality for BGW, they'll also play in DGW, just once, but can still do well. Guaranteed may players will be bought with no form purely because they have a DGW. No player wakes up saying I've been rubbish but it's a DGW, gonna tear it up now.

One thing that is not heavily discussed about DGW19 is that veteran player are used to a big 33/37 blank DGW scenario which was the one over the past years but it seems that it actually won't happen this year. There will be 1 or 2 blanks / DGW in 37 which could be easily navigated and looks like very well suited for TC as the PL title might still be up for grabs at this point.

So there's a strong case to use the chips in 18/19 this year.

That being said, I think that the mst valuable chip in play in FPL is the free hit. I don't see what would justify to play a FH in 18 with the annonced fixtures. A good captain option and only 8 playing players can outscore a FH 11 players. It has happen numerous time over the years

I think the argument of avoiding the FH chip in a blank is not as simple as it seems at first ... it's all about the number of points you get over and above the average in that game week that is important, not the actual number of points you get.

Plus you have to factor-in an unrestricted build-up period from now until GW18 where you ignore the dross and maximise your transfers every week with an eye on the DG19

Its not as clear cut as it may seem 🙂

You may also have to fill up with dross for GW19

As I have only just seen the full list of GW19 fixtures I have put together a table quickly to see who has the DGW as I couldn't see a comment on it. Caps means a home game and lower case is away. I am currently thinking my GW19 strategy will be to free hit with a cluster of players from Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham, Leeds, Man Utd, Vardy.

    Fulham (CHE, MAN U)
    Chelsea (ful, leic)
    West Brom (wolv, whu)
    Leeds (BRI, SOU)
    West Ham (BUR, WBA)
    Burnley (whu, liv)
    Leicester (SOU, CHE)
    Southampton (leic, lufc)
    Liverpool (MAN U, BUR)
    Man Utd (liv, ful)

Also I have just realised is that GW20 fixtures is the flip reverse of this GW13.

Chelsea looks like a shaky pick in 19 despite double. Vardy is hot and cold as well, although he's currently on form. Rest is pretty much justifiable

How's this team looking from GW15...?

    Martinez
    Dier, James, Cresswell, Ayling
    KDB, Salah, Bruno, Son
    Kane, Bamford

    Peacock, Brewster, Jones, Dunne

Which strategy is better - prepare for bgw 18 and FH in 19 or prepare for dgw 19 and FH in 18?

Currently have 7 players for bgw 18.

    Thanks.

I have a WC to use GW16 and I'm thinking the best option is use that for the DGW19 as can then either BB or TC to utilise those games (probably BB as can use TC when MCI or MUN catch their game up).

The split of teams playing GW18 vs those with DGW19 is difficult though. KDB, Son, Kane, Grealish, Zaha, DCL, all play GW18, so it might be that a better team could have made with GW18 options. Would not be able to use TC or BB if go with FH on GW19 tough.

It's a tough one, and might be a big moment in the season!

Wouldn't say worried, there is always a chance of this with City- why I went with the most nailed/cheapest option
