Having already assessed the best goalkeepers on offer, we take a look at the stand-out defender picks in FanTeam’s £1m season-long Premier League Fantasy game.

FanTeam is essentially paid-entry FPL with huge cash prizes, with a guaranteed prize pool of £1m and £200,000 going to the winner.

There is no catch here, only a €20 entry fee – a payment you’ll make up just by finishing in the top 5,000.

To learn more about the rules of the game, click here.

HOW DEFENDERS SCORE POINTS

Before we delve into the player pool, here’s how defenders can accrue points in FanTeam and how the scoring system differs from FPL:

FanTeamFPL
Playing up to 60 mins+1+1
Playing over 60 mins+2+2
Clean sheets+4+4
Goals scored+6+6
Conceding a penalty-2n/a
Conceding a converted free-kick-2n/a
Bonus+0.3/-0.3 “impact points” if a team is winning/losing when the player is on the pitch+1/2/3 based on Bonus Points System

There are, of course, other ways to lose points such as own-goals, yellow cards and sendings off (we’ll refer you to our ‘How To…’ for more details) but the above table is a good indicator of the main sources.

Here is a selection of the highest-scoring defenders from FanTeam (including the now reclassified Stuart Dallas) last season and their respective points in FPL:

Player2020/21 FanTeam Points2020/21 FPL Points2021/22 FanTeam Price
Dallas159171£5.5m (MID)
Robertson150161£7.0m
Wan-Bissaka149144£5.5m
Dias145142£6.0m
Alexander-Arnold142160£7.5m
Cresswell142153£5.5m
Cancelo137138£6.0m
Chilwell133139£6.0m
Stones132128£5.5m
Maguire132124£5.5m
Targett126138£5.0m
Coufal125128£5.0m

Unlike the case with goalkeepers, FanTeam defenders are generally worse off for points than in FPL.

In fact, not one defender finished inside the top 20 top-scoring FanTeam assets of last season; ignoring Dallas, in 22nd, we have to go all the way down to 34th to find Andrew Robertson (£7.0m).

The pair were 10th and 13th respectively in the leading FPL points table, by comparison.

With FPL’s Bonus Points System stripped away and winning/losing “impact points” in place, it’s no surprise that defenders from the more successful clubs shine in FanTeam.

The two Manchester clubs lost only six games apiece, so the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m), Harry Maguire (£5.5m) and Ruben Dias (£6.0m) were big winners.

Contrast that with the FanTeam incarnation of Lewis Dunk (£5.0m), who not only didn’t benefit from his 17 FPL bonus points but also suffered a net loss of four impact points, putting him instantly 21 points short of his FPL total.

With impact points reduced to +0.3/-0.3 next season, however, there’ll be less of an advantage for those defenders playing for the high-flying teams.

Maguire made a net gain of +16 through impact points last season; that will fall to +4.8 if he repeats the exact same win/lose ratio in 2021/22.

BEST FANTEAM DEFENDERS

PREMIUM AND MID-PRICE DEFENDERS

With the change to the impact points rules meaning that defenders are set to score even fewer points than before, there are some tough decisions to be made – particularly among the heavy hitters.

As we pointed out in our goalkeepers piece, Alisson (£6.0m) – who benefits from every save he makes, rather than multiples of three – outscored Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) by over 20 points in FanTeam, which represented a huge swing from the gap in FPL:

FanTeam points in 2020/21FPL points in 2020/21
Alisson162.5140
Robertson150161
Alexander-Arnold142160

The Liverpool right-back gained 26 points on FPL’s Bonus Points System last season, which accounts for the drop.

Of course, Alexander-Arnold had a relatively poor season by his standards in 2020/21.

He ended the campaign in the form we know he is capable of, averaging 7.6 FanTeam points per match in his last 10 appearances; even accounting for the 30% drop in impact points this season, that’s still eye-catching.

And with Liverpool’s mostly favourable start in Gameweeks 1-6, there’ll surely be plenty of takers.

The appeal of Manchester City’s defenders is even more up for debate, with impact points down on last season.

Among the top teams for clean sheets in each of the last four campaigns, we know what we’ll get with Pep Guardiola’s ball-hogging side.

But with attacking returns thin on the ground, FPL bonus points not a factor in FanTeam and goalkeepers earning rewards for every save, the mostly nailed Ederson (£6.0m) outscored the next-best City defender – Ruben Dias (£6.0m) – by over 50 points in 2020/21.

Dias was a relatively secure starter, at least, for those intent on going with a budget shotstopper and spending big in defence.

Luke Shaw (£6.0m) is priced higher than he is in FPL but the other three defenders in the top five for key passes and big chances created in 2020/21 – Lucas Digne (£5.5m), Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) and Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m) – are available at the same cost.

Digne’s excellent opening fixture run and Rafael Benitez’s reputation as being a quick starter and savvy organiser sees the French left-back near the top of our watchlist.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) is one to consider instead of Shaw: not only has he the benefit of a full pre-season, he averaged considerably more FanTeam points per match than the United left-back last year (4.4 v 3.6).

Bar Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), most of Chelsea’s backline can be snapped up for £5.5m.

While the opening fixture run is iffy, the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.5m) should be under consideration given that the Blues kept more clean sheets than any other club once Thomas Tuchel took over.

BUDGET FANTEAM DEFENDERS

There is little to get excited about in the £4.0m bracket, with the 18 defenders at this price point all very much back-ups.

Keep an eye on the team news ahead of Gameweek 1, however, for any updates that may see the likes of Andrew Omobamidele (£4.0m) turn their pre-season minutes into meaningful game-time.

As in FPL, the listing of Kostas Tsimikas at £4.0m is worth noting should any injury misery befall Robertson.

Going up a rung to £4.5m sees a lot defenders come into play.

Nelson Semedo‘s (£4.5m) eye-catching pre-season appearances as a very advanced right-back/wing-back sees the Portugal international appear firmly on our radar, even if Wolves look somewhat uncertain at the back.

Seamus Coleman at £4.5m is also an eyebrow-raiser, given Everton’s favourable start, although rumours suggesting the Toffees are in the market for a new right-back may kill that bandwagon.

Arsenal’s solid defensive numbers in 2020/21 and the arrival of Ben White (£4.5m) could be a good match, meanwhile, with the Gameweek 4 fixture swing looking like a good time to board that train.

The team White left behind, Brighton, also quietly impressed at the back last season and sit near the top of our Season Ticker in the opening two months: the likes of Joel Veltman (£4.5m) and Adam Webster (£4.5m) are cheaper routes than Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) into the Albion backline.

The set-piece-taking Matt Ritchie (£4.5m), with five assists from Gameweek 30 onwards, offers attacking threat if not much clean sheet potential, which is the opposite of Luke Ayling (£4.5m) on paper – but those zeroes in the goal/assist columns mask the fact that the Leeds right-back was among the biggest underachievers in front of goal in 2020/21.

Players at the awkward £5.0m price point are often neglected but goal threats (Dunk) and assist merchants (Coufal) can still be found at this rung.

New Leeds signing Junior Firpo (£5.0m) also looks a menace, while Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) is yet to deliver on the undoubted potential that saw him rack up 25 assists in 97 Celtic appearances; if he can stay clear of injury and run-outs at centre-half, then this may finally be his breakthrough Premier League season, particularly with Arsenal free from European distraction.

All of Villa’s key defenders are available at £5.0m but the fact that the save-accumulating Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) outscored any of them by an incredible 69 FanTeam points last season is a black mark against them.

That's anyone's guess but if you nail City then you are ahead, i.e. PPM. Not looking for a season pick here.

I know planning transfers is risky but I'm going with Mount GW1 with a view to swapping to Torres or Gundog for gw2 once we have a better idea as that is the key fixture

I have TAA and am BB week 1 as well but as Holmes says I look on Trent as an OOP Midfielder with the added bonus of clean sheet points as a defender when Liverpool do manage to keep a CS. I really do not see Norwich scoring in week 1 anyway despite the Liverpool shortcomings defensively.

TAA holds a big threat from free kicks and corners and of course VVD being back gives an extra threat of assists for TAA at corners specifically.

as a Saints fan, his best bet to "start" early would be in one of the no.10 positions (LAM/RAM)
KWP was integral last season, as it stands I only see Livramento playing in this position on rotation or to cover for injury.

Many managers want Harvertz, Son, Mahrez until say no to 12.0 price point.

    But there is some issues.

Harvertz can be false 9 yes, but:-

    - fixtures are not great
    - Chelsea not score much
    - Harvertz waste so many big chances. He got 12, but only score 3. Thats 23%. For comparison Werner get 23 BCT and score 5. Thats 25%. Son get 23 BCT too and score 13. Son score 56% of his big chances. I remember some managers try to pick him when he start as CF (false 9) but he is so wasteful.

    Son

    - fixtures are not great
    - looks likely play without Kane few earlier games.
    - he can have penalties without Kane but there is new rules about penalty. Maybe just few.
    - he always assists Kane, but if Kane is not there, he lose a clinical teammate who can give him points. Lose assist and chances created by Kane too. Kane have the most assists in EPL last season and many of them for Son.

    Mahrez
    - People try their luck but still his manager is Pep. Pep roulette. Even he start at Com Shield, he can be benched for gw1 or 2 where managers want him to play against Nor.
    - At his price points 8-9mil, we can get Grealish. Better because :-

    1. Best 3 fixtures, better than Mahrez fixtures.
    2. Nailed if stay at Villa
    3. Get some addition to squad, think they will make Grealish better.

Havertz came on strong late.really depends how they use him. Grealish totally depends on where he ends up, if he’s not allowed the move he may be annoyed; two players already signed that take the spotlight off him, ends up at City in Pep rotation.

      Agree with most points.
But not Regarding Havertz. The fact that Havertz gets those big chances is why he is considered such a great pick.

But we are getting Lukaku so need to monitor that.

      Interesting post

On Havertz I'd just add this - look at the proportion of big chances he got in the last 10 or so. Yes he was wasteful but there is a fascinating comparison with Salah in weeks 28 on. In this time Liverpool had ana mazing fixture run and Chelsea didn't

Salah 11 big chances 3 goals
Havertz 9 big chances 2 goals

Looks similar enough to me. And I think that is the time frame you need to check as there was a distinct change of position for him then. Going with him represents a risk of course but 8.5 is great value IF he comes good and he does have a good historic record as a finisher.

    Bottomed.. post back. Sorry..

Anyone going without Trent or Robbo although they have favourable fixtures?

Trent likely to outscore all defenders but the ratio is what we talk about. He is not worth 7.5 even VVD is back right ?

Their mids is not solid enough to give more protection .

When VVD is fit last season, newcomer Watkin with Grealish and no Buendia can score hattrick against leaky Liv. Now with Watkins assisted by Grealish (if stay), Buendia , Bailey, its more dangerous.

    I think I go without Trent .
A good 5.0 / 5.5 can follow his points quite close even not outscore him. I talk about ratio.

In the end, maybe Trent cant get 185, and a good , consistent 5.0, 5.5 def can get 155 / 160.
    That 2.0 saving is huge.

Can help me get anybody in mids like Bruno, KDB, Son etc.

Get Trent, Shaw and WanB previously.

Think I want to downgrade Trent to 5.0 Coufal or 5.5 Digne.

    Thought?

U going with Trent or not?

    Thanks guys.

How is it a better side? That needs elaboration.

His preferred assist partner is Mane who has bombed since. Does the midfield trio match 2019/20? How do you explain the fall off in cs with the presence of VVD who has something like 4/5 clean sheets from his last 18 appearances?

He may be a better player but I can see zero evidence that they are a better side.

Its about ratio mate. i do think he will have a better season with VVD but will 2.5 mill worth?

If 5.5 get around 155-160 and Trent get better , get around 180. Is that worth?

The caveat of this is maybe we dont want to keep all season but many managers want him all games.

You’ll be very lucky to stick with a 5.5 that gets 160. Trent can easily pull 200+ ; and the starting fixtures could hurt you big time.

You have a point .. fixtures is good. I know that. Thats why I start a discussion.

Varane is a good addition for M.U. If fully fit I can see Wan B , Shaw can get 160. Maybe Digne but the data is not there with a new manager. But according to your logic (search for his old points) , Digne get 158 once without reaching 3000 minutes play.

So Digne to can get 160. Its possible if Rafa tight at the back and DCL delivers.

Its about maximising points with limited cost. Of course its not weird.

You buy a bunch of players and want to get most points from them. Its not about individual. Its combination.

I'm risking going without both to have a Power-5 midfield.
I wonder if the tweak to the offside interpretation will adversely affect them as the defence plays very high and often depends on marginal offside decisions.

                Perilous as you say

For me the double Chelsea and City look is one too far anyway. Not sure Stones has enough likely upside to justify the risk when taken in conjunction with all the other rotation risks.

I read today Laporte wants away - clearly he feels Stones has that spot. Mashrez is a short-termer but the other 4 mids are intended as keepers (so long as Lukaku is a no-go)

                    Interesting that

No Laporte would reduce the number of times Stones is rotated out for sure. But would still find it hard to justify him over Digne until United defence settles down.

never go for back up keeper in sane team especially if u also have a defender from that team.

You will need two transfers to get midfielder or attacker from that team further on

What is the tweak? First time I heard about that, I only heard was the changes on Penalty using VAR which they say will lessen the amount soft penalty calls..

Offside also. They will use the thick bars seen on TV rather than the one-pixel wide lines VAR uses. It gives the benefit of marginal calls to the attacking side

I guess i am going with both and then getting one of them out for Shaw in GW3.

Havertz Robbo> Shaw Son in GW3.

That allows me to have the good fixtures of Havertz,Son and Robbo without sacrificing Bruno.

Having said that i miss Mahrez. But with the rotation risk he is i guess thats fine. Cant have everyone.

Generally a fair point, but with a 4.5 forward on my bench, the 4.5 defender and 4.5 midfielder might get the odd call-up. Especially in GW1.

Oh for sure ; I expect the bench to be busy this year, even had a team draft with a killer bench at one point. But I think the 4.5s mentioned will all net about 75 pts a piece.

    Is planning a Havertz > Mahrez/City > Son, GW1 > GW2 > GW3 transfer strategy too risky?
Should other problems arise then I do have the option of just going Son GW2 thus no third move, thoughts?

Not even thinking of Kane at this stage, would ultimately be at the fate of Bruno.

There's just so much left to happen in the transfer market, I wouldn't want to plan transfers.

Another point is, let's say you have Havertz GW1 and he bangs a brace. Would you still be selling him? I don't think so, specially as he would be rising in price and all others would be bringing him in despite his fixtures

You can adopt your strategy if you're confident that you want play the fixtures nothing wrong in that.

I like Buendia to Saka gw3, however, I don't believe the gw3 is a "must sell" with Everton at home in gw5.

Plenty of Bruno-less teams flying around. All well and good. At the end of the day, nobody’s team is right or wrong pre season. People can only offer opinions on what they believe to be the best way forward.

Andy made a very good point. If Bruno-less managers are more than happy to sit back and watch Bruno haul, score penalties in the first few weeks where you dont own him, then be my guest. If your knees will wobble and you’re likely to going to want to bring him in, you’re better off just going with him from the start

Don't buy that reasoning at all

You can make the same argument for any player you don't have - why is Bruno special as a transfer in? This feels simply like someone who thinks Bruno will haul early justifying the decision to have him.

If Bruno blanks and Son hauls and you're happy to sit back and watch the goals and assists in the first few weeks for 2 mill less but will trade down for way better value when your selection blanks then you are better off getting him in from the start!

Why is Bruno special as a transfer in… hmmmm let me think….

48 returns & 54 baps in his last 49 starts/2 subs… 361 points in 51 apps since joining just under 18 months ago… there literally isn’t another player in the game you can make that argument for (Salah 4 years ago the closest)

And there’s also nothing to stop him starting slowly & scoring 15 points in the first 5 gameweeks - the same as any other player - and someone completely left field like Mahrez, Son or Havertz scoring 50

But let’s not pretend Bruno is anything other than an *EXTREMELY* “special” FPL player

People’s memories are so short on here, it really is baffling sometimes

You forgot to add that he is guaranteed to up his output 20% this year 🙂

Son is a very left field pick I grant you - really poor last season and waaaaaaay down on Bruno almost the whole season.

Or you could of course read my post. I was not commenting one way or the other on the rights or wrongs of Bruno (who I have) over Son simply the reasoning applied for justifying it. I could be wrong there but your cut and paste arguments have zero relevance. Let you think indeed.

And what on Earth is the snide remark about a guaranteed 20% increase in output? Is that supposed to be something I’ve said? Because if it is I can start fabricating things you’ve allegedly stated too - if you feel that’s a sensible direction to take the place in?

I have had him in all my teams up until now. I started looking at captaincy and realized I wont really want to captain him for the first 8 game weeks. Is it really worth 12m if I think there are better options available? You mention Andy, he also got a really good finish last season and he started without Bruno for most of the season.

    A) Bruno, Jota
    B) Son, Mahrez

Will probably WC in gw4-5 so Mahrez rotation less of a worry for me.

Does anyone see any value in Everton's 5.5s Townsend/Gray with their early fixtures?
    Not seeing anything on here.

      Yep

I've still got Townsend in my unrevised draft. Suspect I'll lose him but I have him as an interesting punt with fairly low expectations. Rafa appear to be going without wingbacks and that makes the wings possible supply lines to DCL.

Quite interested in the 5.5 price point with a few who could be real value there but all come with hefty question marks. May just lose that spot.

Only thing its likely to kill is his own career. He should go for West Ham if any since Antonio is getting old plus he is injury prone. Brighton might actually be a good long term solution for him.
