Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

You can read all of their previous FPL Masterclass articles via the links above but this time we’ll be asking our panel: do you like to roll transfers where possible and in what situation do you contemplate hits?

TOM SAID…

Saving a transfer when possible is a really good habit to get into, as two frees can be gold. It’ll give you more flexibility, and an opportunity to change the structure of your team, too.

I tend to take four or five hits a season, but it does largely depend on how it’s going. If I’m chasing, that approach may change.

I also feel more comfortable taking a hit if one of the players I’m bringing in will be my captain, and it’s also worth noting that the Blank and Double Gameweeks throw up another set of unique circumstances. For example, if you can field only ten players in a Blank Gameweek, a hit to ensure you have 11 might be a good idea and is probably worth rolling the dice for, especially if the player coming in forms part of your longer-term plans. The same applies to a Double, as you have more chance of making the hit back.

However, my general rule is that points are the most valuable thing in the game. Remember that feeling when your forward hits the back of the net? That’s essentially what you’re throwing away with a hit.

ZOPHAR SAID…

I am a very risk-averse FPL manager so I very rarely take hits. I have a long-term plan when I pick my players with a rough idea of when I want to hop on/hop off and this allows me to space out my transfers over a few weeks. I am pretty frugal with my moves, as well, as I am very picky when transferring players into my squad and once they’re there I remind myself why I picked them and show a lot of faith, often to my detriment.

Very often, the use of one free transfer limits your options because of the money you have in the bank. Using two transfers allows you more possibilities to upgrade a player by using the second one as a cash-enabling move – so the importance of rolling your transfer cannot be overstated.

On the rare occasion that I do take point hits, it’s usually in combination with two free transfers. This allows me to bring in three players for my squad, which are usually two key assets I have identified and one facilitator. I feel I am more likely to make up the -4 right away with three rolls of the dice. It feels like a bit of a mini-Wildcard.

Another instance where a hit might make sense is for the captaincy. If a premium asset you don’t own is heavily backed in the captain poll and you don’t like the other options in your squad, bringing in a captain for -4 can pay dividends.

Blank and Double Gameweeks are another ball game altogether; the conventional rules don’t apply. In the former, a hit for a player who has a blank is more of a ‘-2’ as the asset you are bringing in is going to make up two points on appearance alone. However, I only bring in the player if I want him for the coming weeks, not just for the Blank Gameweek.

In Double Gameweeks, a hit for a player with two fixtures can pay fruit as he has two bites of the cherry and hence significantly more potential to deliver big returns.

LATERISER SAID…

I haven’t particularly thought about rolling transfers whenever possible because by nature I’m a very opportunistic manager. I’ll always want to look for opportunities to make my team better and gain points in the next Gameweek.

I’m also a big believer in the butterfly effect in the sense that if I’m gaining a transfer on the competition and if my team is ahead by a few transfers, then I’m able to make more opportunistic transfers in the future and I’m not focusing them on ‘fixing’ my team or using them as a ‘band-aid’.

I like using them as a luxury nitro boost, which is why I generally am not rolling transfers and always have at least seven to eight hits in a season.

My policy when it comes to hits is that if I’m jumping on a player that I’m sure of, it’s better to make a move when the good run of fixture starts – even if it is for a hit – because you’re increasing your probability of catching that haul for your player. This rule more often than not applies to attackers and, more so, premium attackers. I’m never too bothered by the downside of a four-point cost of a transfer and I’m generally not afraid of taking hits – but that is my nature as a manager.

    Thoughts on

    A. Havertz GW1 > Mahrez GW2
    B. Just start with Mahrez and potentially save an FT

    Sánchez (Steele)
TAA — White — Dias (Targett, Ayling)
    Salah — Havertz — Greenwood — ESR — Buendía
    Lacazette — Antonio (Obafemi)

I think Targett scores more over the first 3 gameweeks due to CS, but in the long run Coufal gets you more points. If you intend to WC early-ish, I would say start with Targett and switch to Coufal if you are still keen on him.

I owned both for a while last year and while Targett did better for me, I’m going with Coufal. His attacking output seemed more sustainable, especially as a lot of Targett’s best offensive work was in combination with Grealish

Buendia scored 1 goal last time in prem. He joins a team who struggled without grealish for last 2 years, likely to be bottom half this year I reckon. What am I missing? Is it just the first 3 fixtures?

      Villa bottom half ?????

I think not. I am a Leeds fan but they have strengthened hugely and have a decent chance of getting a European spot in my view.

They now have a clinical finisher up top supported by a host of quick and creative attacking midfield options.

I almost left him out because of his returns at Norwich in the prem, but he's since improved and I believe he's in a much better team now. I think Villa will have a decent season with their transfer window and the fixtures are great.

Norwich got decimated with injury in the prem with a thin squad last time out, just look at his underlying data over the last three seasons.

How many players had everyone got under 10% ownership (slight differentials)

I have Jota, Barnes and Cancelo

I think it’s better to go template at the start to keep up with the pace then go differential later on as you don’t want to be chasing from the start as you’ve avoided template players (who normally are the best and most logical)

I'm quite happy to set and forget the Watford pair, would definitely like two GKs from the same team and I doubt I'd have anyone else from WAT. It could go wrong but that can be sorted at the first WC. I also like having either Veltman or Ayling coming in for Cancelo when he ends up being benched so have no interest in a 4.0 DEF,Thanks though.

What about the Newcastle scenario? One goalkeeper gets covid, they all test positive?

It's not about covid, it's just making sure that one of them will always play. The whole covid thing seems to have been relaxed and calmed down now around football. I haven't heard of any positive tests from players and if they do it seems that only they have to isolate and not the whole team. It was strange what happened at the euro's because when Gilmour tested positive, Mount and Chilwell had to isolate but the Scotland team didn't. Seems awfully bizarre on the rules re covid so I don't think you can factor that into the way we play this season apart from having a playing bench which is all we can do.

Ah ok, just looked it up. Either way that can happen at any squad so now way to factor that into team selection unless you have two 1st choice keepers at two different clubs which I doubt anyone would do.

Some have gone with Bachmann and Sanchez, which is not a bad idea, imo. I'm on Sanchez, but as I also have Veltman, getting the backup Brighton keeper blocks any Seagull incomer further down the line.

Main keeper is Sanchez. Backup Begovic. Avoiding Foster as he's highly-owned and could drop in price.

I don't like your team. Too risky having 3 City assets with Peptation.
Ayling might have to plug CB in the first games
                      Greenwood is a rotation risk
Watkins has lost his FPL sheen as he'll be shunted out wide.

Fair enough. Ayling is one I'm not overly happy owning but as a 4.5 rotating bench player he will do. As for the other points I'm aware of but happy with the selections myself. Cheers

the best tip I've paid attention to is to resist temptation to make a transfer in gw2. Rolling the first transfer and setting up the option of a mini wildcard in gw 3 helps massively if you want to preserve your wildcard beyond the first month.

the only time I've managed to do it is the only time i've genuinely had a good season (helped set the tone for me).

What happens very often is that a player doesn't return in GW1, they get transferred out and then smash it in GW2. Definitely worth giving your starting team 2GWs and only make a transfer for injuries/doubt over starting.

I'll certainly be planning to go into GW4 with 2FT as the transfer window will have just closed. Mind you, if i wildcard, I'll be wasting a transfer.

yes i did this last season. Thought spurs looked turgid in gw1, took out kane for a hit, kane then got 3 assists and a goal versus soton. felt like it took me half the season to recover.

With the latest news that Lukaku might come to Chelsea, Kane or Messi might come to Man City, it is likely that we will want to try to fit one of them into our teams (dependent on price) if the moves happen.
With that in mind, I have created a team to allow easy transfer and retain 3 big (attacking) big hitters:

    Sanchez-Foster
    Shaw-Coufal-Veltman/Ayling (rotation)-4.0 def
    Salah-Bruno-Mane-Raphina-Buendia
    Antonio-Toney-Obafemi

No TA-A but I can easily move Bruno or Mane (or Salah) to Kane or Lukaku (or Messi, if affordable) and swap Toney to a 6.5/6.0 Mid instead.

Any thought or comments on this strategy?

I'm putting my best team out, then using my wildcard if post-GW1 transfers mean I need a radical overhaul. I'm not gonna plan for what I don't know what's gonna happen.

Wonder if Man City will go with Sterling as striker now. With Grealish in the Sterling role. Sterling is good at tap-ins so would suit him.

    Ederson
    Cancelo Stones Dias Mendy
    KDB Rodri Gundogan
    Mahrez Sterling Grealish

    Steffen
    Walker Sandler Laporte Ake
    Bernardo Fernandinho Zinchenko
    Torres Jesus Foden

The other thing is I would not be surprised if Grealish follows a similar trajectory to Sterling in terms of goals and assists now he is working with Pep. Sterling in all competitions under Pep went from 10 goals in 2016/17 to 23 in 2017/18, 25 in 2018/19, 31 in 2019/20. He had a poor season in 2020/21 (14 goals).
