Our series of articles on the promoted sides ends with a look at Nottingham Forest’s midfielders and forwards.

We have already assessed The Reds’ head coach and defence, with focus now switching to the exciting Brennan Johnson (£6.0m) and the supporting cast.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

You can find everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth here.

The stats in this piece are taken from FotMob and WhoScored, with the heatmap courtesy of SofaScore.

WHAT IS FOREST’S GOAL-SCORING POTENTIAL IN FPL?

Forest were promoted from the Championship with the third-best attacking record, having scored 73 goals in their 46 league matches.

That was 33 short of Fulham’s total (106) and one fewer than second-placed Bournemouth (74).

However, Forest plundered just five goals in their opening seven matches under Chris Hughton prior to his sacking, while it’s also worth noting that no Championship side acquired more points than them in 2022.

Above: Annual Championship table 2022, via Transfermarkt

The Reds were behind nine Championship sides for shots in the box in 2021/22, but what’s encouraging is how effective they were on the counter-attack, an area Mark highlighted as a strength.

2021/22 total (rank v other Championship clubs)
Goals scored73 (3rd)
Shots573 (5th=)
Shots in the box350 (10th)
Shots on target199 (4th)
Attempts from set plays142 (16th=)
Attempts on the counter-attack27 (2nd)
xG69.7 (7th)

“While Cooper likes to control the ball and possession in matches, Forest were the most effective Championship side without the ball in that they offered a sharp attacking edge on transition. They don’t engage a high press but instead defend smartly and set traps for turnovers and then attack with the pace of the wing-backs and front two to capitalise. It’s a tactic that seems set up for a newly promoted side and one that will likely see Forest cause problems, even for some of the more elite Premier League sides. – Mark Sutherns

Mark also suggested Forest can be effective from set plays, although having lost the on-loan James Garner back to parent club Manchester United, a new set-piece specialist will need to be found.

“Cooper’s side were impressive defending at set-plays and equally adept at capitalising on weakness of their opponents from dead-balls – see Joe Worrall’s goal versus Leicester City for reference. Again though, much depends on whether they can find a replacement for Garner so that ammunition can be provided for Yates, Worrall and Scott McKenna.” – Mark Sutherns

A Salah, Kane, Haaland and Jesus layout.

    4.5
    5 // 5 // 7 // 6
    13.5 // 6 // 5.5
    11.5 // 11.5 // 8

    4.0 // 4.5 // 4.0

This would mean no Trent but still allows for one of Cancelo or Robertson.

Very tempted by this as it would mean I can use my transfers on picking up whichever 6m / 5.5m midfielder train leaves the station first. (There's always one)

As much as I love the 8.0m options in midfield, all my drafts so far only has room for one. So I can see many picking one, then that 8.0m blanks whilst another two haul GW1. Then I'd end up transfering to another 8.0m, only for my oriental choice to haul GW2.

        Whoops, 13m.

It's not like I look at his price as he's in the team regardless

Sadly not, the 6m defender can always be a 5.5m to get an extra .5

Could one of the 5m defenders also become a 4.5m? Then that’s 1m extra you’d have to play with.

I like your thinking, nice to see something a bit different.
I've just created a draft based on that but with Robbo and Cancello.

      Sanchez (Steele)
      Robbo Cancello Cash Tomiyasu (Williams)
      Mo Bruno Neto (Colback, Andreas)
      Kane Haaland Watkins

      thoughts?

This will be an early wild card for sure. Your going to put a huge chunk of your budget into the forward line who historically score the least points across a season. Your team is really missing price points. If TAA starts banging how do you get to him. Likewise with the midfielders if the 8.0m start banging you need two transfers to get there. What if you two cheap mids don’t fire who do you go to?

Valid points and unlikely that i will go with so much money up top but interesting to play about with something different. The lack of flexibility is the main issue.

I'm never a fan of playing 5 at the back at the start of the season, but how does this look? Playing subs mean that it can move to 442 / 451 without too much hassle.

    Raya
    TAA | Cancelo | James | Trippier | Cash
    Salah | Diaz | Saka | Neto
    Haaland
    ------------------------------------------------------
    Balcombe | Johnson | Andreas* | Greenwood

or whichever 4.5M emerges as the most locked-in / best value option.

I had similar on another draft.

Diaz to Grealish, Saka to Bruno G, Neto to a 4.5 allows for Kane as a second striker in a 532

Good value for a 4.5m. Limited ceiling. If you're seriously into Arsenal defence Gabriel is probably worth the 0.5 more

    2. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

Probably. Makes you more flexible too.

I measure how flexible a team is by the number of 4.5m players it has. Cash in big piles is easier to move around, and 4.5s will happily sit on the bench should your formation change in the future.

Castagne and Pereira are a steal at 4.5 obviously only if they're nailed and miraculously stay injury free

Are there many other people here that have barely touched their team since first setting up? I set up my initial draft on Wednesday, had a look on Thursday and made 4 changes and haven't gone near it since nor have I been tempted to. I've opened the app and looked at different players but that's about it.

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
          3 years, 8 months ago

Pretty much the same, set it up was a 5-3-2 with rashford in it, haven't touched it since as there's been no transfers worth caring about and pre season hasn't got going yet properly

Single draft done, not tocuhed it since.
Can't be bothered plus no need to sweat as with kind pricing even a 2 year old can put togheter decent team.

My team has undergone a few evolutions, but each one feels progressive, and not cyclic.

Pre-season tinkering is my favourite part of FPL, so going to enjoy it.

My draft is pretty much done. All I need to decide is to go double up with Chilwell and James or if Rashford is playing well in preseason go for him and one Chelsea defender.

        • DelPiero10
            3 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, same. Made one personnel change from my original draft and have left it alone, but I have had a look at some player combinations without actually changing things up, just to see if I liked it better than the original. Didn't. Rather than mess around with it like I did last season I built my own fixture tracker for gw1-25, noted my top 3 captain picks for each of those weeks, built a rough-guide transfer/WC plan for gw1-16, and looked at how to maximize potential up to the World Cup. Had a lot of fun doing that and I'm feeling quietly confident I can get a good start.

People pay 5 or 10 euros to streamers just to be able to comment in chat. It's not stupidity, it's just a donation. Maybe nobody will donate anything to her, or maybe a hundred people appreciate her work enough to throw her a couple quid. I don't think it's anything to be confused or agitated about. You don't have to spend your money in that way.

I only heard about her because people are getting their knickers in a twist about her RMT thing. You can also enter your own amount, and it grants you access to her discord server. I can see why people might want that. I don't use discord and I've never donated anything to anybody that's not a charity (friends included!), but I don't begrudge her or the people who pay to join her club!

Well, you have a good point to some extent. It's definitely a good way to show her support through this if you're a follower/fan. But I believe there will be plenty of different cases when people genuinely spend it on hearing "advice" a la "Salah good, Lukaku bad". And this part annoys me. Another example would be 50:50 decisions which are hard to nail and you simply can't know who's the one to get. For example: Which £8.0m midfielder will be the best this season? I can tell you for free that it's most likely one of Saka, Kulusevski, Mahrez, Mount, Foden and Maddison. But I have absolutely no idea who ends up on top in May. Nobody should spend £ on pure predictions and guesses. You also can't put a definitive starting team together one month before the season starts and mislead people. I would be less against it if she started with similar thing one week before the deadline. It's way too soon now.

No idea who you're talking about, but paying for someone to look at your team is about as weak as it gets. Good googly moogly. Each to their own I suppose.

Why do you respect them? They are making money off poor unsuspecting noobs who don't have enough about them to do their own research. Everytime you lose out in a money league or lose to your rival there is a good chance one of these spoonfeeders are the reason. Why would anyone listen to Holly , let alone pay her. I mean what's she done exactly ? ( Serious question as I have no idea why she is so popular)

I respect everyone equally until they give me a reason not to. If I left this part out, someone could come at me saying that I'm a sexist (which I'm not), and I "think" that because she's a woman, she can't play FPL, be good at it and charge for advice. I just protected myself from similar crap in beforehand. She can do whatever she wants for all I care and I didn't expect this topic to bang.

My opinion is that nobody's advice is worth any money in a free fantasy football game. I wouldn't pay Borges, Sheth, Sutherns etc., let alone her. If I'm destined to win FPL, I'll do it myself. I would feel a million times better in this scenario, instead of listening and following someone else for a whole year.

Nah that's fair enough. They make the game worse imo so I have a different view and have no issue calling them out but i appreciate it is a subjective topic
                            .

This is only going to get worse though as the game grows more. They are 10 to a penny these days. One guy even has a patreon for the press conference stuff and people actually join it ..wtf ??? . Only pod I bother with is FML because they know how to have a laugh, they don't try to be anything they are not and Walsh is probably the best of the lot in terms of football and tactical knowledge. Which isn't saying much anyway.

I wouldn't worry about idiots coming at you with the ' you are sexist ' angle. No one should say you are sexist just because you don't think anyone should pay her for advice. If they do they are merely a reflection of what society is sadly becoming. Ads annoy me more than anything. Adman Bakar and FPL Salah always have their online begging bowls out and want you to join their Instagram because they can make a fair bit from Ads just on number of followers

There are some people that play FPL purely for money and have no interest in the game.

They would enter lots of big money mini leagues and to make sure they win, they'd just copy a renown content creator every week (paying a small sub fee). They don't have to do anything more than login on like a Saturday morning copy the moves and then log out.

If you had picked like FPL Mate last season you'd make a tidy amount for very little effort.

This is my only issue with the whole thing, couldn't care less what people spend their money on but the influencers (especially the good ones) need to understand that there's a healthy amount of people just straight up copying them

Why do they need to understand it? What difference would it make to them? I assume they mostly understand this already, but they're not in it to make the game better are they? What do you think they can/should do to alleviate the issue other than quitting?

Well they're not all exactly the same and some of them have reacted already to address this issue, a simple solution some have used is talking about various moves they may make during a week, and then only revealing after the deadline

I don't have a major issue with it btw, the way I see it everybody could copy Fabio Borges* for all I care, my aim is to beat him, my aim is to beat everyone so I'm not sat here utterly aggrieved but yeah I do wish people were making their own decisions rather than just minimal thinking and copying an influencer

I have the same attitude 😀

If I had a FPL YouTube Channel, I would treat my audience as competitors. I already spoon-feed my ML rivals anyway, so I have some competition, and then lie about my plans. I feel like that would be more entertaining to watch and true to the spirit of FPL. Naturally, though, not everyone could pull that off without my charm and charisma!

Yes. They are very bad for the game. Although I doubt the likes of Mate or Andy will improve anyone as they are not that great themselves. Andy is the most indecisive player in the history of indecisivness and pretty Average where as FPL mate is just bad but a few flashing graphics appeal to the masses and draw them in. I actually think people would join s live stream to watch Andy take a whizz if they had chance and donate £30 for the pleasure. I'd rather they copy them though than the likes of Fabio but most of these content creators have so little football knowledge they hide behind stats and that's the issue. They are loudly filtering stat tables for everyone players don't even need to do that no more. Very bad times imo

You're right and we have different goals as well. Somebody is playing for money, second for overall rank, third for fun, fourth for winning friends' mini league and bragging rights. Reasons vary for each person.

There's probably around half a million of those who play for cash/prizes. In their situation it's easier for me to understand why would they spend extra money on more content later. I couldn't do it though.

There are so much advice available out there for free. Some awful and some decent but the best advice is always the advice which doesn’t say “do this”, “pick this player”. It’s the advice where a valid and non biased analysis or stats are provided and then you make your own decision based on that.

You have to learn to filter through the crap on twitter. All the threads promoting their own picks etc

That’s why sites like this are probably still the most valuable investment if you enjoy the game

Surprised that Solanke has such low ownership at 2.4%. I know the fixtures aren't great but if you have a good 4.5M defender there to step in for City and Pool away that'd be ok, then the fixtures are good. He has improved dramatically since he's signed for Bournemouth, on penalties and a lot of his goals last season were high quality poaching. I'm a big Neto and Martinelli fan but these 2 are very likely to be subbed 60-70min (or not start) given the options both Wolves and Arsenal have in midfield.

I want to go without Salah for my opening team, this is what I've come up with so far:

                          Raya
                          TAA Chilwell James Botman Neco
                          Diaz Foden Sterling
                          Haaland Kane

                          Balcombe Murphy Pereira Undav

But unsure between this and swapping Kane and Botman for Darwin and Cancelo... Thoughts?

Salah is the only player I won’t budge on, he is in every draft.

Will Nunez be eased in gently and share minutes with Jota to start with is the risk.

No doubt a Premium DF is good value for money, but feel there’s so much value in the 4.5m’s:

Tomiyasu, Justin, Lamptey, N.Williams rotation looks like this over the opening 8GW’s:

                          GW1: Tomiyasu(cpa) Justin(BRE)
                          GW2: Tomiyasu(LEI) Lamptey(NEW)
                          GW3: Tomiyasu(bou) Justin(SOT)
                          GW4: Tomiyasu(FUL) Lamptey(LEE)
                          GW5: Tomiyasu(AVL) Lamptey (ful)
                          GW6: N.Williams(BOU) Lamptey(LEI)
                          GW7: Tomiyasu(EVE) Justin(AVL)
                          GW8: N.Williams(FUL) Lamptey(CPA)

I'm not putting any faith in Leicester's defence, whoever they're playing against, especially when there's question marks about who will start at full back.

If Bamford fit not likely to start and given he is most highly owned 4.5 forward could lose value on him quite quickly

No. If Bamford's not fit, Gelhardt will start. Greenwood could get a few mins in midfield, but don't think of him as a playing 4.5m

                          Thoughts?

                          4.5 - 4.0
                          Trent - Cancelo - James / Chilwell - Tierney - (N. Williams)
                          Salah - Saka - Diaz - Martinelli - Neto
                          Haaland - (Undav) - (4.5)

Thoughts? I've got a few differentials I think:

                          Mendy / Forster
TAA / Cancelo / James (although potentially may change to Chilwell) / Tomiyasu / Botman
                          Salah / B. Guimares / Perreira / Fornals / Martinelli
                          Johnson / Darwin / Haaland

                            8/10

Martinelli may share minutes with Smith Rowe and I don’t like the Fornals bit.

Are the minor defensive downgrades worth it?

                          A) Robertson, Laporte, Jesus
                          B) TAA, Cancelo, Mitrovic

I'm leaning no but it's tempting...

I think there's an argument for Laporte being the defender instead of Cancelo. Cancelo has had one outstanding season, whilst injuries permitting Laporte is more consistent. Ake, the other left footed centreback looks to be on his way out too.

TAA > Robertson is a coin flip but there was an article promoting TAAs underlying stats. Can you save the 0.5 elsewhere?

Jesus over Mitro will be worth it though, we've been burnt with him a couple times already.

B but I don’t like the Mitrovic pick

Nothing would make me compromise on Cancelo.

Lot of savvy FPL players out there.

Andreas (4.5m) gone from almost 0% ownership to 13% ownership in a week.

Helped by there being no other decent 4.5m midfielders around 😀

                          Thoughts on this team?

                          Mendy
                          TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, Chilwell, Dias
Salah, De Bruyne, Bruno G, Rashford
                          Undav

Not convinced Bruno G's goalscoring form is sustainable based on his history/role, and Rashford is even riskier.
                            But I like the rest

                            Blimey that is some defence!
