A little later than usual, we dissect the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Saturday’s top-flight fixtures.

For those who prefer a more numbers-based recap, we also have a statistical breakdown of Saturday’s Gameweek 4 action.

The numbers and heatmaps you see in this article are from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

LIVERPOOL 9-0 BOURNEMOUTH

Roberto Firmino‘s (£8.0m) 22-point haul in Saturday’s win over Bournemouth was not only the highest individual FPL Gameweek score of the season but also over a third of what he managed in the whole of 2021/22.

We’ve seen enough of Firmino in recent years to know that he is capable of producing a monster score (Watford in Gameweek 8 of last season for example) before reverting to underwhelming type but what it does do is lay down the gauntlet to the suspended Darwin Nunez (£8.9m), who will return in Gameweek 6. With Diogo Jota (£8.9m) also in the final stages of recovery from injury, short-term competition is fierce again up top for the Reds.

“In a bunch of outstanding football players and top performances today; loved Robbo’s impact, for example, [he] makes all the difference for us when he’s that lively, but Bobby, yes. He played, I know that’s not the moment to talk about individual performances when you lose at Man United 2-1, but he played a really good game there. Imagine a game against United where we have near 70 per cent possession without Bobby, it would probably have been 49 [per cent], or whatever, so he was everywhere, but today was a completely different game.

“So for him, again, high up the pitch, more between the centre-halves, dropping, yes, but in different areas between the different lines and arriving in the box, being part of the massive chance in the first half when it was the little one-two with Harvey I think, backheel – that’s Bobby Firmino how we all know him. For him, if you talk about what kind you get off the chest, this was a massive game today. So, and the timing couldn’t have been better, to be honest.” – Jurgen Klopp

Most key Liverpool assets filled their boots against sorry Bournemouth on Saturday, with defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) supplementing clean sheets with attacking returns and Luiz Diaz (£8.1m) walking away with a 14-point haul. Most that is, except for Mohamed Salah (£13.0m).

In a season in which there has been plenty of talk about a possible reduction in goalmouth proximity due to Darwin’s arrival, he was ironically at his most dangerous in the Bournemouth game.

MOHAMED SALAH IN 2022/23
GWMatchPen box touchesShotsShots in the boxBig chancesxG
1FUL vs LIV42210.38
2LIV vs CRY103210.34
3MUN vs LIV93300.27
4LIV vs BOU144421.23

‘Variance’/luck can only really explain the two misses below and a blank in a 9-0 win. While there may be a longer-term debate to be had and analysis to be done about Salah’s value and potentially diminishing threat alongside Darwin, transferring the Egyptian out – over 270,000 have done this already – only based on Saturday’s three-pointer does seem short-sighted.

Diaz overtook Salah in the FPL points table after Gameweek 4, although it should be said that his expected goal involvement (xGI) for the season is not far off a third of his Egyptian teammate’s (1.21 v 3.20).

Liverpool probably won’t get an easier league fixture than this all year, with the Cherries looking like a team well out of their depth. Bournemouth’s survival won’t be based on results against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, of course, but owners of Pedro Neto (£5.3m) and co will be hoping that their hosts’ confidence is shot to pieces come Gameweek 5 and that the much-needed new recruits still haven’t arrived.

Scott Parker does at least have star striker Dominic Solanke (£5.8m) and club captain Lloyd Kelly (£4.5m) to come back into the side in midweek, with the former only the bench on Saturday and the latter absent with a minor injury.

“At this present moment in time, yeah, for sure [it was the lowest point of my job]. Definitely. But where we currently are, I can see some more, to be honest with you.” – Scott Parker

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold (Clark, 83), Gomez, van Dijk, Fabinho, Robertson (Tsimikas, 69), Henderson (Milner, 69), Elliott (Carvalho, h/t), Diaz, Salah, Firmino (Bajcetic, 70).

AFC Bournemouth XI: Travers, Smith (Solanke, h/t), Mepham (Bevan, 82), Senesi, Zemura, Lerma, Cook (Pearson, 77, Marcondes, 82), Tavernier, Christie (Billing, h/t), Anthony, Moore.

MANCHESTER CITY 4-2 CRYSTAL PALACE

Touches, smouches. Erling Haaland (£11.8m) got on the ball on fewer occasions (16) than Crystal Palace’s second-half substitute Chris Richards (£4.5m) in Saturday’s six-goal thriller at the Etihad but still ended Gameweek 4 with the match-ball and top of the FPL points table.

    Sanchez (Ward)
    TAA James Sanchez CANCELO (Neco)
    Salah Martinelli Gross (ZAHA Andreas)
    Haaland Toney Jesus

Got 2 FTs and 0 in the bank.. now that Saliba looks nailed and gross looks good and neco has good fixtures from next week I'm thinking of shaking things up a bit with

Cancelo and Zaha to Patterson and Sterling for free.

Would then play 3-4-3... With neco, Andreas and Patterson on the bench with no benching dilemmas

Tell me I'm not crazy for considering this

Apologies for the repost.. new article

Not crazy. I’d go Diaz or Kulu over Sterling or just Zaha to Rodrigo and keep Cancelo for this week

Problem with Zaha to anyone is there is nobody i would bench for that person this week.. so it would be a waste. There's a lot of doubts that have been cleared for me now

        Ie
        Patterson looks nailed
Neco is very attacking and has good fixtures from next week
Saliba is someone i can play every week
Gross is pure class and has an exit plan in Eze and Aaronson

Hence why switching to 3-4-3 makes sense. Alternatively i could get Perisic/Trippier/Dalot/Fofana + Diaz instead of Patterson + Sterling

Cancelo not looking much of an attacking threat nowadays and Chelsea's fixtures are good so would not call you crazy.

Cheers mate. I think everyone(including me) forgot how good a premium a nailed sterling is. At just 9.9 there is potential there for a sneaky captaincy choice too once in a while

Cheers mate. He is a genuine 3rd captaincy option when Salah has a tough fixture and haaland looks like he could be rotated etc. Could prove useful vs Diaz(already have Salah) or Kulu who I'd never captain

Think they're solid moves, I love to move for Sterling this week but it requires Cancelo going out like you, and I can't do it before Forest personally but I like that you're going for it, Sterling has amazing fixtures, i may still go for him next week if no other issues as I'm rolling my second FT. Good luck!

If fpl did not have the rule of carrying only 2 Fts i would have waited. However my options are now either
        1. Burn transfer

        2. Transfer Zaha for a player under 7 who il most likely bench

        3. Sterling over Cancelo this week and no benching dilemmas for the foreseeable (i don't think I'd want to bench gross/Saliba as I'd initially planned.. and neco, Andreas and Patterson look able deputies when needed)

        3. Makes the most sense to me

the template is playing against the non template team's who can easily triumph on a week to week basis.

Hence the discontent with the template.

What's more annoying than the prices is everyone moaning about the prices on Twitter.

I think it's because the non template and Triple Captain team's have the current higher ranks.

I would drop Robbo for Dunk or Perisic & upgrade DaSiva
Would probably then use the DaSiva position for rolling transfers each week to try & gain an advantage

Possibly Gundogan but I went for Bernardo. Created the most chances out of everyone on the pitch in the Palace game and has been on the right in the last two games like he used to be. He has played the last two games in full but he also barely played in the first two, and Mahrez has looked poor so I'm hoping he'll have a good run

    Chelsea have a good run.

Sterling could break up the template, at 9.9m you'd have to sell another premium and put your money into a different configuration.

I can get to him by selling Cancelo and moving out Martinelli, not doing it this week but I'm definitely considering it for next week

    2. Valar(Keith)

Yup. Swapping Cancelo and Zaha for him mostly. I have the luxury of having 2 Fts and no fires so i want to make full use of it. He is so awkwardly priced that many won't be able to afford him without taking out Salah/Haaland/kdb/Kane.. i can get him alongside Salah and haaland so I'm defo tempted

yeah, unless anyone still has Son then that's an easy switch.

The difficult one would be Salah to Sterling plus cash. I'm not against it at the right time.

Any moves to make here? Nothing stands out for me but concerned about the players rotation:

    Rams (Ward)
    TAA / Robbo / James / Peri / Cancelo
Grob / Salah / Mart (Dasilva / Pereira)

Had sterling already moved to Chelsea when fpl opened in july?
Wondering if he was priced for uncertainty at man City or fully priced for being nailed on at Chelsea.

Love him or hate him the guy is capable of 200+ scores a year when nailed and usually rocks an 11 to 12 million price tag

I don't see why not. He'll always carry the tag of someone who can't finish since he ll miss easy chances.. but he still gets a crazy amount of goals and assists. only unknown is who will Chelsea buy in this window and how it will affect his positioning on the pitch

Cheers. Knew he moved on 13th July but forgot the fpl launch date. Mispriced then. If he is guaranteed 2800 or so minutes a year he is usually in double figures for both goals and assists. Would have been 0.5 to 1 million higher had he moved 2 weeks before. I'm finding him hard to ignore at 9.9! Haven't seen him in the 9 million region for years now

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

To be fair he was definitely overpriced for a few years too given his waning gametime at City, he's certainly at a decent price now though given he should be playing basically every game

          1. Valar(Keith)
            • 16 Years
            3 years, 7 months ago

Yup. Defo a case for being overpriced last 2 seasons. Even then he managed 20 goal contributions ie 10 goals and 9 assists and 13 goals and 7 assists.. note that plenty of these minutes were of the bench.

I'm hoping he goes back to his 30 goal contributions (15+ assists and 15+ goals) that he regularly hit between 2018 and 2020. At 9.9 i wouldnt complain with 20 goal contributions and would be ecstatic with 30 goal contributions so he is a low risk premium punt as long as no sacrifices need to be made elsewhere

            1. Valar(Keith)
              • 16 Years
              3 years, 7 months ago

Basically he is not a premium is consider instead of Salah/Haaland/Kane but am defo considering him as the best one alongside 2 of them. May even captain him when Salah has a tough fixture and haaland has starting doubts etc like this week

Still think he needs to continue to show more consistency before can know for sure if underpriced. A reason why so many still aren't considering at his price point

          1. Valar(Keith)
            • 16 Years
            3 years, 7 months ago

Cheers. He is a proven asset though. Main reason noone is looking at him is he is in an awkward position.. ie can't rely on captaincy and hence can't swap a premium out for him... Yet he is too expensive to get alongside them especially when Diaz and Kulu etc are options at cheaper.

He may stay that way all season and even he hits 200 points many won't be able to afford him

Considering you have 4 premium defenders even after dropping Cancello, personally wouldn't move Andreas out

    Morning all.

Was just looking ahead a few weeks - I'm not liking the look of GW8! Might try to keep 2 FTs for that week and bring in a couple of assets from Newcastle and/or Spurs. I'll likely be wildcarding the week after that anyway.

Yup. That's the plan. I might sell TAA and Robbo for GW8 then bring them back in on a GW9 WC.

Doesn't look the worst for me although I only have two Liverpool assets and am looking at bringing in Sterling so it may be an issue, I'm in the same boat as you in that I'll be planning on wildcarding in GW9 but I'd rather save FTs if I feel it'll be working towards something long lasting so I'll say I'll just dead-end my team and hope it works out

I would go for it, but perhaps transfer out Ward and save 0.1M.

salah because of incertainty of halaaland start. also bruno injury has weakened newcastle (not sure if he will be back though)

      Haaland for the goals.

If he starts on the bench and Manchester City are winning 3 nil he's less likely to come on.

Does anyone care to rate my WC idea?

    Sánchez Ward
    TAA N.Williams Saliba Perišić Trippier
Martinelli Rodrigo Groß L Díaz Bernardo
    Jesus Haaland Kane

I know there’ll be benching headaches, but I don’t really have any faith in the 4.5-5.0 midfield range, so rather go for two of those in defence with Neco & Saliba with Gross & Bernardo for example, than say Cancelo & James with Andreas & Dasilva.

Swapping Jesus to Toney would allow trippier to James or Neco to Walker.

Besides Villa and a couple of other fixtures most of the next 20 games in gw5 and gw6 in the next 6 days are close.

Will be a fair few swings in rank incoming.

    BT Sport week.

If you have EE you can get a decent Big Screen deal with EE and there's an app on Samsung where you can watch it on TV, with another game on your phone or tablet.

Don't think the BT Sport app is on LG TVs yet. Unless you pay BT Sport the full price.

Anyone else still fancy Mitrovic over Toney? Even with those fixtures I think I prefer Mitro

    Need to replace Wilson …

Mitro looks better to me but I've not looked at Brentford attack much at all.

Yeah I do. Looking to bring him in in a couple of weeks. Chelsea game should be a fun way to start & then nice fixtures all the way to GW14. Looks more explosive than Toney to me

He's certainly showing the form. I avoided Toney (went for Welbeck instead although this hasn't been super), nothing against him but I'm never too sure on when his returns will come, Brentford can be quite hit and miss and most seemed to bring him in after his assists against ManUtd. Think I'll get Mitrovic in in a couple of weeks when the fixtures turn, the thing that impresses me most is how fit he looks right now

    2FT and 0.5ITB.

Only made the one transfer so far this season and feel it might be time to freshen up.

    Thoughts on this move…..

Cancelo & DaSilva to Dalot & Gundy reverting to 343 with Dalot on the bench.

    Current team:

    Ederson
    TAA James Gabriel *Cancelo*
    Harrison Odegaard Diaz
    Haaland Jesus Kane
    Bench: Ward, Nico, Pereira, *DaSilva*

    Any better moves I’m missing???

Don't really agree with Dalot as 4.5 of choice but otherwise like the move

Yeah, main reason I’ve gone him he’s 4.4 and I don’t have enough for a 4.5 (Dunk etc)
