It’s an earlier-than-usual Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline this week, so you’ve got an earlier-than-usual Scout Picks to go with it.

In this article, we discuss the players who we think could prosper in the biggest Double Gameweek of the 2022/23 season so far.

Four teams play twice and players from these clubs make up just over half of our selection, including a triple-up on Manchester City.

As ever, we are limited to £83.0m for our first XI. And, after a reader vote ahead of 2022/23, an overall price cap of £100.0m is in place for our 15-man squad, too.

FPL Gameweek 15 preview: Goalscorer and clean sheet odds

It’s Friday morning and we’re still no closer to knowing which Manchester City defender will start one of their Double Gameweek 20 matches, let alone two, so like Riz Ahmed’s character giving up and walking into Boots at the end of Four Lions, we give a shrug of the shoulder and opt for Ederson (£5.4m) between the posts.

He’s at least available at his lowest-ever price in FPL and while his two upcoming fixtures aren’t ideal, City remain out in front for most of the key underlying stats in 2022/23: the reigning champions, for example, comfortably have a lower expected goals conceded (xGC) total than any other team in the division, even Arsenal and Newcastle United.

DEFENDERS

The top eight all play each other this weekend, with Manchester City facing Tottenham Hotspur next Thursday. Clean sheets could be in short supply this week, so much so that we’ve overlooked any defender from two of the teams that double, Spurs and Crystal Palace.

Manchester United’s midweek clash at Selhurst Park is probably the pick of the bunch for shut-out potential, at least among the four clubs who play twice. Luke Shaw (£5.1m) has racked up more points than any other FPL asset since the restart and while past points are no guarantee of future ones, the Red Devils’ defensive stats – the second-lowest big chances conceded in the last 10 Gameweeks, a period that coincided with Casemiro’s (£4.9m) full debut – are very encouraging. Anything Shaw gets in the Manchester derby is a bonus.

The lack of a double and the visit of a Fulham side who have scored against every top-10 team this season can’t prevent Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) from making the Scout Picks yet again. By the time he takes to the field against the Cottagers, it’ll be 365 days since his last blank at St James’ Park. Six attacking returns and as many clean sheets have arrived in that time, with Trippier averaging 7.7 points per match on home soil.

Our Scout Squad panel were very keen on a Brentford defender this week, with David Raya (£4.6m) and Ben Mee (£4.6m) gaining plenty of votes between them. But with our budget not even stretching that far, we’ve gone for the slightly cheaper Ethan Pinnock (£4.4m) to stick within the £83.0m limit. Pinnock actually made our Watchlist earlier in the week, again partly because of his price but also because he’s looked a threat since the restart (racking up four shots in the box) and because Brentford are ranked a very respectable fourth for fewest big chances conceded in their last six matches. Opponents Bournemouth haven’t scored since before the World Cup, meanwhile, and look in freefall.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Each week, a member of the Fantasy Football Scout community takes on the Scout Picks.

The community member who beats our team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher and a place in our Moderators and Contributors League for the following season.

Boleyn Boy’s 81-54 victory in Gameweek 6 gave them the biggest win (27 points difference) of 2022/23 so far.

Our champion this week is skipnicklee who has gone for the following: Ederson; Perisic, Shaw, Trippier; De Bruyne, Rashford, Olise, Eze; Kane, Haaland (c), Mbeumo.

The Scout Picks are level at 9-9 with the community this season.

Don’t get these Scout selections. I thought it was a FH team every week yet there’s only 6 doublers? Like I’ve got 6 and I’m building a team that’ll hopefully work for weeks!

I think you’d want 9-10 on a FH plus a few more on the bench. The community selection looks more like it - I wouldn’t necessarily do the same guys, but it seems more optimal.

More doublers =/= more points, there are always players with a single game that outscore big DGW picks

Well yeah some SGW players will out score DGW players.

Also in SGWs there’s always some subs that outscore starters, but nobody is filling their team with bench players

That's not really the same point though is it? There are plenty of players that have one game this week that are in good form and have good fixtures, that you'd think have a decent chance of returning, so you normally wouldn't drop them for someone else (Almiron or Martinelli may be an example). Just because another player has 2 fixtures doesn't instantly mean they're a better pick than someone that's been returning regularly and is in one of the best teams in the division

If you’re on a FH and picking Martinelli or Almiron this week id suggest you’re doing fantasy wrong.

I think Trippier would be my only definite SGW pick this week on a FH

I’d fancy Newcastle and Arsenal players to outscore Palace ones by a mile.

Martinelli who is in the best team in the division and has 5 returns in his last 6, who is up against a side that have conceded 11 goals in their last 6, is a bad pick? Or Almiron who is in one of the best teams in the division who also has 5 returns in 6 who is against a side with the highest xGC? I mean it might end up that way but on paper, they're definitely not bad picks, FH or not

The "community champion" (whio goes up against the scout picks) has 9 DGWers in his team - will be interesting to see what the final scores are between the two.

I think 9-10 is probably too much.

      United: Rashford, Shaw, De Gea
      City: Haaland, KDB, Mahrez
      Spurs: Kane, Kulusevski

Who else is worth considering? Even a third City player is a bit of a gamble.

For one week, I’d probably do those same City and Utd trios - although DDG could be Martial/Anthony/Eriksen instead, Kane and Doherty (treat him as 4 appearance pts plus attacking upside), maybe Zaha or Eze, I’d probably have a Palace defender on the bench too.

Like is anyone seriously taking a Brentford DEF with 1 game over Doherty with 2 games at the same price?

I’d much rather have Mee at home to Bournemouth than Doherty against Arsenal+City, where those “4 appearance points” will quickly disappear as they concede goal after goal.

Not like he’s even nailed on - Emerson and Perisic can both play there.

Don't see the hits paying off tbh - would be ok moves for free

If Darwin is looking like he's out then the Martial move

Have a very similar team and looking at transfers with the same players potentially going out

    Anyone considering De Gea? (Bottomed)

    - DGW with another on the horizon
    - United defence been good since the restart
    - makes a lot of saves
    - cheaper than Ederson and won’t take up a third City outfield spot
    - no clear third United option with Dalot injured and forwards unreliable

Yeah, I would probably do Kepa to DDG if I had no fires to put out, but unfortunately I'm in Pudding Lane at the moment.

Martial only plays 60 mins, is made of glass, has looked poor since the restart and will have competition very soon (which he struggles with). Not like he’s banging them in to justify a punt.

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)

I'm actually considering moving Kepa to him for a hit. Normally against my general ideas regarding keeper transfers, but I have little confidence Chelsea will keep a clean sheet against even Palace right now, meanwhile DDG has a double and possibly another double and is generally good for save pts, and the big difference being that I can actually see ManUtd picking up clean sheets

Yes. I have 2FTs so am set on Salah to KdB and then Kepa to either DDG or Ederson.

Was waiting for more DGW news but, as it stands, i think i'll just do Ederson. Next week, as a SGW, Ederson hosts Wolves and United travel to Arsenal.

Might consider switching in 22 if DDG gets a double and Dalot isn't fully firing.

Both look good on paper but could of course backfire. I'd suggest Kane and Shaw are the most 'essential' there. Losing/benching Mitrovic hasn't worked very well for me in the past, I think I'm sticking regardless. If/when Liverpool double I think Salah will be enough for me especially as KDB isn't living up to his price-tag (but of course is great for the double(s)).

Yes. I believe I'm good to go on everything else. My current line-up is: DDG; Trippier, Cancelo, Shaw; Salah, Martinelli, Rashford, Almiron; Mitrovic, Kane, Haaland.
Also, I'm trying to find the guts to give Rashford the armband!

Why would say that? It's not like Liverpool is awesome atm, and City has 6 matches in the next 4 GWs. It's true that KDB hasn't impressed recently, but the numbers are there.

Lewis feels like a problem in waiting, could be a massive wast tie up a city place. haven't spurs conceded 2+in last 7 league games?

Given you will probably play Saliba most weeks after this one, I'd go reasonably cheap - Bot/Schar from Newcastle or Mee from Brentford? possibly one of Ake/Akanji but dont know enough of who is likely to start both

Don't like Lewis - takes up a Man City spot and not convinced he'll play much long term. Stones if fit would be my choice

Best transfer to make with the following Squad? 2.6 in the bank.

    Kepa, Ward
    Shaw, Cucurella, Trippier, Patterson, Bueno
    KDB, Martinelli, Almiron, Rashford, Andreas
    Mitro, Kane, Haaland

Thinking about doing Kepa to Ederson.

Just done -4 to get rid of double Chelsea defence to Dalot and Ederson. (Done Dalot before he was crocked.)

0.2 ITB, any thoughts on current lineup and subs?

    GK: Ederson
    DEF: Shaw, Trippier, Mee
MID: De Bruyne, Rashford, Mitoma, Odegaard
    FWD: Kane, Darwin, Haaland

    Subs: Ward, Botman, Jensen, Bueno

I know Darwin is a doubt but his underlying numbers make him worth keeping, and if he doesn't play then Botman steps in with a decent chance of a clean sheet.

Klopp on Darwin: "If he cannot train today, then yes, that would rule him out. So we are waiting for more information. It's not a major one but it has still kept him out of training. So we have to wait for that."

Another quote that covered Darwin towards the end, when Klopp was asked about transfers:

"In the moment, four of our offensive players are injured, our strikers. So we don't buy another one. They will come back, thankfully, not tomorrow, but they will come back - Darwin soon, the others a little bit later. And we have seven strikers then!"
