Finishing off Saturday’s Gameweek 34 Scout Notes, we look back on wins for Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea.

BRIGHTON END WINLESS RUN – BUT ENCOURAGEMENT FOR NEWCASTLE

Brighton ended their six-match winless run in all competitions with a last-gasp victory over West Ham United on Saturday.

The victory kept the Seagulls very much in the race for a top-eight spot and potential European qualification.

Above image via the BBC

The victory may well give Albion a shot in the arm going into Gameweek 35. Don’t forget that they’ve already beaten their upcoming opponents, Newcastle United, twice this season.

But Saturday’s win still wasn’t wholly convincing. Two of their goals were long-range, low-xG scorchers from Yasin Ayari (£5.0m) and Carlos Baleba (£5.0m).

While there were a handful of chances from corners, Albion’s open-play threat was minimal. Kaoru Mitoma‘s (£6.4m) 89th-minute equaliser was the first real notable opportunity that they’d created outside of dead-ball situations.

Despite being declared fit to start on Friday, Mitoma began the game on the bench again.

FPL notes: 125

At the other end, this was another match in which Brighton conceded twice. That’s six Premier League games in a row that has happened.

The Hammers arguably had the better opportunities, most of which – including both goals – were created from Brighton’s left. Encouragement for Jacob Murphy (£5.3m) next week.

Brighton themselves have a tough-looking run-in, so FPL interest will be minimal in their players. Liverpool’s early title win and Spurs’ potential UEFA Europa League final involvement could work to their advantage, at least.

BOWEN LOOKING GOOD FOR GAMEWEEK 35

Jarrod Bowen (£7.6m) created both of those West Ham goals, converted by Mohammed Kudus (£6.2m) and Tomas Soucek (£4.8m). The latter assist was a superb teasing cross from out wide.

While the Hammers have generally struggled in attack under Graham Potter, Bowen is averaging 5.8 points per match under his current boss.

Whether it’s away from home, when Potter tends to drop an orthodox striker and play Bowen and Kudus up top in a 3-5-2, or at the London Stadium, where he’s wider in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1, Bowen is a pretty consistent FPL performer.

And Gameweek 35 should give him an opportunity to continue his decent form under Potter.

Tottenham Hotspur provide the opposition – and the Lilywhites will be doing so right in the middle of a UEFA Europa League semi-final double-header. Spurs conceded five goals to Liverpool on Sunday, and their starting XI will likely be weaker still in Gameweek 35.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.4m) caught the eye going forward on Saturday, too, delivering two key passes and as many shots without reward.

JACKSON’S DROUGHT ENDS BUT PALMER’S CONTINUES

Nicolas Jackson‘s (£7.7m) superb strike against Everton on Saturday belied a forward on a 12-match goal drought.

While one barren run ended at Stamford Bridge, another continued. Cole Palmer (£10.6m) is now without a goal in 17 matches in all competitions, and that dry period never looked like ending against Everton.

Enzo Maresca declared himself content with Palmer’s overall performance but there was little conviction in the midfielder’s moments on the ball, let alone goal threat: drifting deep and wide, he failed to register a single shot for the first time in a Premier League appearance since Gameweek 4.

“Yeah, we said many times that we don’t have doubt with the ones that for part of the season they struggled a little bit, like Nico, like Cole [Palmer], like Robert [Sanchez]. It’s the moment that you have to support them even more. Nico finally found the goal today. Hopefully Cole soon can score goals. But I think Cole’s performance today was very good. Sacrificed, he was pressing well. So it’s just a matter of time for all of them and for sure they’re going to help us.” – Enzo Maresca

Gameweek 34 was probably the last-chance saloon for many Palmer owners (a lot of whom would only have owned him on the Free Hit anyway), with the following run awaiting Chelsea in the run-in:

Noni Madueke (£6.0m) was arguably the pick of Chelsea’s attackers on Saturday, catching the eye in a new role on the left flank. He had a game-high four shots, all of which were on target.

CUCURELLA’S OPEN-PLAY THREAT DIMINISHED BUT…

A first Premier League start of 2025 for Romeo Lavia (£4.5m) saw Maresca shuffle his pack slightly.

Moises Caicedo (£4.9m) inverted from right-back to join Lavia in midfield, freeing Enzo Fernandez (£4.8m) up further forward. It was Enzo, indeed, who assisted Jackson’s goal.

That all meant that Marc Cucurella (£5.4m) was asked to play a more conservative role, holding the fort more as a third centre-half rather than making the gung-ho inversions of recent weeks:

Cucurella

And yet… he still nearly hauled.

Cucurella ended up with his joint-highest shot count of the season (three), two of which were excellent chances from set plays.

His third effort, an ambitious strike from 30 yards, almost brought an assist, only for Jackson to be caught offside when gobbling up the rebound.

If Lavia continues to start in the Premier League (there’s a decent chance of that as he’s not in the UEFA Europa Conference League squad) and it’s Caicedo continuing to invert from right-back, then Cucurella’s open-play attacking threat obviously diminishes. Enzo’s may go in the opposite direction.

DEFENSIVE REASSURANCE

Lavia’s reintegration also potentially boosts Chelsea’s defensive prospects for the remainder of the season, although the fixtures may limit the clean sheets regardless. That midfield two of Lavia and Caicedo offers a solid foundation, and you’d imagine we see it in Gameweek 35 against Liverpool.

More good days from Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) wouldn’t go amiss either: he made a couple of very good stops against Everton, whose own custodian, Jordan Pickford (£5.1m), was typically reliable.

The Toffees were less watertight without the injured James Tarkowski (£4.9m) but the good news is that they weren’t totally open, either:

Cucurella

David Moyes opted to move Jake O’Brien (£4.5m) to centre-half rather than recall Michael Keane (£3.8m), and the former was decent enough in the middle alongside Jarrad Branthwaite (£4.8m).

There’s still hope for clean sheets in the remaining two matches at Goodison Park, then:

Cucurella

No one is really sticking their hand up further forward. Iliman Ndiaye (£5.2m) was hooked at the break, while Beto (£4.8m) may not even start up front in Gameweek 35 as Armando Broja (£5.3m) will be back available.

Perhaps Dwight McNeil (£5.1m) finally returns to the side next weekend. His fourth successive substitute appearance after recovering from injury was the longest yet in length at 32 minutes.

“First half I didn’t think we played well. I thought the substitutes made a big difference to us.” – David Moyes

What are your views on taking hits at that stage of the season ? I am reluctant to take hits during the season (I'm pretty sure I went 1.5 season without a single -4 a couple of years back) but willing to take a wee gamble for a rank boost. Do hits still pay off with so little games left ?

I think I'll take a hit for KDB in. And using TC on him. Chasing my mini league, nothing to lose

Swings both ways. I've took hits and would have been better off leaving my team. Took a 12 point hit earlier in the season and got 49 from the 3 I brought in, one was salah though. 37 point swing overall.

Will probably take a minus 4 this week. Saka, timber and either sarr, Murphy or Rogers (DGW news depending) for mbuemo bowen and possibly an Everton defender. But I am thinking for rest of the season not just a one week punt. Saka and timbers minutes for the rest of the season concern me and Everton vs ipswich and southampton could be good for someone like myko. Also chasing 20 point deficit but playing AM this week. Exciting finish to the season for me

Personal view is hits are pointless (figuratively speaking) at this stage of the season because there's going to be a lot of volatility so they are less likely than normal to work out, and you've got less games to spread that volatility over.

I just took a hit to bring in Sessegnon and Mbuemo. Not necessary at all, just a gut feeling - could be a massive mistake. I took out Trippier and Sarr. My bench has Munoz and Kiwior so yeah, so unnecessary but it felt right and I had the exact money lol 😀 gotta do it sometimes for the fun.

I made a mistake in my "Salah can't hit the barn door" comment. didn't factor in miskicks. Not often, but they do happen. 3 times he hit the barn door from 17 open play attempts in the last 6 games. The last one went in.

Horrible fixtures, but if I was pushed I'd probably go Jackson alongside Watkins and Isaak for the remaining — I'm prolly going Wissa though depending on CPL/City fixture news (still got Mateta after FH last week).

"It’s a mindset problem. I am very angry. Not disappointed, just angry for what we did after the goal. It was difficult to bring the boys back to push up. We didn't push up anymore. We tried, but we didn't have the ability or the motivation to push up again.

"I'm very, very angry that we played like this because we had some minutes where we showed what we can do against an opponent like that at home. We showed that we can have good possession, that we can go in behind and that we have the chances to score again. But the motivation, sorry, we were s*it. I'm very angry."

They've been really fortunate there wasn't one half decent promoted side. Obviously they aren't alone in that boat but they've dropped as far as Man Utd have from last season and have had no european distraction to even partially mitigate it.

Saka is surely benched in the next game as it comes between the 2 European games, and after that he has Liverpool and Newcastle. Would you want him for those 2 games? I get you'd want him back for Southampton at home

Have to disagree. Since when did wolves vs man city become a hard game for city lol. Yes wolves have won 6 on the bounce but they were southampton, west ham, ipswich, Tottenham, man u and Leicester. As soon as they play a top 6 side it becomes harder for them. Man city is where I expect the winning streak to end then city get southampton after, 2 out of 2 wins IMO

You didn't tbf but you said gameweek with difficult fixtures so only had that to go off. If you had mentioned table bonus I would have replied with a different answer. For table bonus points i still feel this is a good week. Palace vs forest is a decent chance, especially if forest play poorly vs Brentford. They have overperformed massively this season based on goals scored vs goals expected and would become a point when it becomes unsustainable, based on recent performances you could say its happening right now

    2) Sarr Saka to Mbeumo KDB -4

    Alternatively without -4:

    A) Saka to Mbeumo
    B) Mateta to Wissa

Really hope there are no more doubles/blanks so we can get back to normal strategy. It ruins the game in my view. I mean why does the FA Cup final now take place before the end of the premier league season? It always used to be after its finished. Idiotic.

      100% agree.

It also unbalances the run in for those chasing Europe/title etc— albeit the teams in the final are about all done for the season now.

Couldn't agree more. Didn't enjoy the season at all from the planning perspective. Next season I will do my best to save transfers at the start of the season to have more flexibility when this dgws/bgws arrive in quick succession. Won't be easy though:)

Its very hard to save transfers though isnt it. Always issues that arise, fires to put out and key transfers to be made preferably without delay.

I always prefer the first half of the season when there are generally no doubles or blanks so you can actually plan normally and not be put off a player you are really keen on just because they dont have a double in 4 weeks time! Urrghh.

After the dreamy 103pts free hit team, back to the grim reality of my actual team..2fts though, anything to do here, like Saka>Mbeumo? And is the lineup correct?
Waiting for potential doubles info before making transfers, ofc

    Raya
    Gvardiol, Mitchell, Konsa
    Salah(c), Saka, Rogers, Murphy
    Marmoush, Isak, Mateta

    Verbruggen, Sarr, Saliba, Neco

We have a very similar team and my starting XI is almost identical, I'm just not sure who I favour between Saliba and my Palace defender (Munoz in my case); it's a bit of a coin toss. With Raya in goal, perhaps it's wiser not to have another Arsenal defender, so you could have it right.

As for the transfers, I think I'm just going to let mine roll for GW36.

Yeah tough one, maybe a bit optimistic with my predictions since the league is over and UCL football is probably secured for next season

        Current thoughts:
Result in the first leg may dictate mins against Bournemouth, probably still limited mins.

Mins in the 2nd leg (e.g. extra time) may impact the Liverpool game but leaning towards Arteta will start him assuming fit.

        Starts 37 and 38.

Personally, expect Saka to start and play every game.

Still a chance Arsenal don't finish top 5 if their league form falters and those below keep on picking up points.

Unlikely, granted but it's a possibility.

Very strange season for me. Has been dreadful generally (mainly as I stuck with Haalsnd too long / avoided Salah) but gone from 1.9m to 400k in 4 weeks so could be a decent finish yet.

I think you need to make a transfer here.

Rashford is likely out for the season. Probably limited mins for Savinho and Saka this GW.

Unai Emery on Marcus Rashford: "He is injured. He got injured this week. It is his hamstring. We are going to test him each match to see how he is progressing. Probably some weeks that he can be not available."

Without Tark I don't see us keeping many clean sheets. Not scoring many either so we look a little tense. Tarky and Bran have been ever present this season since about GW5. Without him our right side is compromised with Young/Patterson, as O'Brien has been an animal there.

That said. I have to complete the season with an Everton player (personal rule). Might punt Pickford for Ipswich/Saints games.

I'm not sure losing Tark will have a massive drop off in their defence especially when looking at the opponents for the remainder of the season (probably exclude Newcastle 38).

Even though they conceded against Chelsea, it was still under 1xGC for the game.

Yeah. It's not losing Tark as much as exposing the problem we've had for years on the right. O'brien has been stellar there this year. So we're not going to be as tight + Saints will be very emotional game. Not sure I'll even be able to watch it. That emotion will pour out onto the pitch.

I felt eveton did well against chelsea defensively, O'brien seemed to do well in CB and Pattinson seemed to have a reasonable match. Mcneil back starting would help offence and take some strain off defence. Defo a clean sheet or two left before the season ends

None of their first choice defenders are injured. Among the suspended ones, only Berg and Evjen are important. (which is basically their main engine, will give advantage to Spurs in this case)

Not sure where you saw this from but first choice defence (Bjørkan, Gundersen, Bjørtuft, Sjøvold) are all fit (Bassi Patrick Berg (suspended; CM - think Rodri's role) will be a huge loss. Evjen's creativity will be missed in the right 8 role but they might not mind playing a more defensively sound option like Fet in the away leg anyway. Helmersen wouldn't have started ahead of Høgh up front
