In the Suspension Tightrope, we look at the players close to a ban, already suspended or returning from the naughty step in Gameweek 14.

HOW MANY BOOKINGS RESULT IN A BAN – AND WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS?

ban Gameweek 13

We’ve taken the above table from the Football Association website. It details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark. This is an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches of the season.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

Five new names joined the 23-strong list in Gameweek 13.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (£5.7m) and Riccardo Calafiori (£5.8m) were the most notable additions from an FPL perspective. Both have double-digit ownerships in FPL.

Donnarumma’s teammate Bernardo Silva (£6.3m) also joins those on the tightrope, along with DefCon magnets Mats Wieffer (£4.9m) and Andre (£5.3m).

Daniel Munoz (£6.0m), Granit Xhaka (£5.2m) and Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.6m) remain precariously positioned on four bookings but at least avoided fate-sealing yellow cards in Gameweek 13.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

There are 40 others who have a bit more breathing space on three yellow cards.

Micky van de Ven (£4.8m), Antoine Semenyo (£7.8m) and Marc Cucurella (£6.1m) are fresh entries on the above list.

Mohammed Kudus (£6.5m), Jack Grealish (£6.6m) and Igor Thiago (£6.7m), like the above, all have double-digit ownerships and remain on three cautions.

So too does man of the moment Phil Foden (£8.1m).

SUSPENDED IN GAMEWEEK 14

FPL Gameweek 4 differentials: Elliott, Truffert + Paqueta 4

As you’ll no doubt be aware by now, Marcos Senesi (£5.0m) will sit out Bournemouth’s clash with Everton on Tuesday. Both the defender and teammate David Brooks (£5.0m) picked up their fifth bookings of the season in Gameweek 13.

The Cherries were hit with a triple suspension whammy on Saturday, in fact, with Lewis Cook (£4.9m) sent off for violent conduct. He’ll now serve a three-match ban.

That’s the same punishment that Moises Caicedo (£6.0m) faces after his own dismissal against Arsenal on Sunday.

Both Caicedo and Cook will return in Gameweek 17.

Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m) was also shown the red card in the Gameweek just gone but as his sending off was for two bookable offences, he’ll only sit out one match.

In terms of ongoing punishment, Idrissa Gana Gueye (£5.4m) serves game two of a three-match ban.

Mykhailo Mudryk (£4.9m) also remains provisionally suspended by the FA.

BACK FROM A BAN IN GAMEWEEK 14

Who is close to a ban or suspended in FPL Gameweek 14?

Cristian Romero (£5.0m) is back after a one-match ban. He sat out Saturday’s defeat to Fulham after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season in Gameweek 12.

B & D on my shortlist. Think they’re great options at the price.

Prefer Foden to Doku for that City spot.

Dango still being overlooked. Stats look poorer than reality because hes a diver who gets away with it which is a straight road to assists.

FH in 16 likely, so he'd have AVL, WHU, SUN, ars, whu, BUR in the coming weeks which doesn't seem terrible. Like Anderson, but not sure on him as the 7th attacker.

I've been playing with 5 premium defenders all season rotating them with a solid midfielder like Xhaka and even Merino for the past 3 GWs. I've taken no hits so far, and that's exactly what the tactic enables. I would recommend keeping Senesi as the current DC leader (although I now see he's suspended) and rather taking out the likes of VDV, Reinildo and Gudmundsson who surely can't be trusted as elite defensive options. Chalobah and O'Reilly are quality in form picks, but they have a certain downside in the longterm - or just pay attention to their team status, both seem too good to drop atm. But surely you can't miss with someone like Munoz, Timber, Calafiori and some other DefCon magnets like Tarkowski, Lacroix, Guehi, Burn etc.

      1. Johnjo
        • 8 Years

Yeah, that seems like a sound tactic. The Defcon points really have made a big difference this season.
When you look at the current points stats of players with over 65 points there are 7 defenders, 2 midfielders and 2 strikers.
And yet I bet most people are still playing 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 as that formation has become so ingrained as delivering the most points in previous seasons.

        1. Pariße
          • 11 Years
          7 months, 4 days ago

Exactly. I think I wildcarded GW2 and just done that immediately. I also saw some very well performing teams stocking on Semenyo plus 4 defensive midfielders - something we haven't seen in previous seasons. And I also noticed that solid defensive structures we're seeing in the Premier League have led to wingers being unable to return consistenly, while defensive midfielders are often the recipients of rebounds that land just outside the box. Surely some graphics could test this theory if there's in fact more of these situations, but many defensive midfielders have scored more than twice this season - Caicedo, Gravenberch, Zubimendi, Casemiro, Pahlinha, Bruno G.

You need a bigger watchlist, imagine it's neither in the end. Just look at the goalscorers this week: Le Fee, Foden, Merino, Adli, Adams, Tzimas, Mount... who would've thought.

I personally hated owning Gakpo, as I don't think he's actually a good goalscorer. Gets a lot of shots and chances but wastes most. Maybe if Szoboszlai could stop having to play right back, he'd be a better option because he looks like the best player for Liverpool this season. I haven't seen enough of Minteh to have a strong opinion, if he's is in form go for it.

            • 7 Years
            7 months, 4 days ago

Yeah think the Pope was dropped because of his howler in the champs league and its been covered over with he picked up an injury. Newcastle look much more comfortable playing out from the back with Ramsdale in goal so I could see it being his position to lose but how long that lasts is anyones guess. I have considered switching from Pope to Ramsdale but with uncertainty its probably better to look elsewhere and maybe pick up more nailed starters at the back such as Thiaw, livramento & hall. Ramsdales price and the upcoming run does make it tempting if your the sort who likes to take risks.

Brilliant insight. I currently own vintage NUFC characters like Burn and Pope, and was even considering Barnes, but the team is going through an upgrade with the players you're mentioning. I quite liked Hall until he got injured last season. Whilst for Ramsdale, this is the exact reason he was signed and then also sold by Arteta. He's actually a good ball playing keeper with an elite long ball distribution, but not as comfortable as the likes of Raya on the ball.

Im not sure who to replace Pope with tbh. I like Raya and he is the most obvious choice but his price along with locking you out of other arsenal triple ups especially when gabriel is back puts me off that move. Im currently on Pope, Thiaw & Woltemade. The latter could become a rotation risk with gordon slotting in upfront and wissa playing his 1st match behind closed doors. He stays for now but seen plenty looking at bruno g. Can see me bringing in livramento at some stage though especially with Trippier out for 4 weeks.

Not a fan of these fast turnarounds but better start getting used to it at this time of year 😀
