Manchester United will be back in the UEFA Champions League next season, with qualification confirmed thanks to goals from Matheus Cunha (£8.1m), Benjamin Sesko (£7.3m) and Kobbie Mainoo (£4.7m).

Here are our Scout Notes from Man Utd 3-2 Liverpool.

SESKO INJURY

Sesko found the net for United on Sunday, but was taken off at half-time, having picked up a shin problem.

“He got a bang on his shin when he fell down the side of the pitch. It’s something that he’s been carrying for a little bit as well, so we’ve had to manage him a bit but he’s certainly had a bang right on the same spot. It’s as simple as that really.” – Michael Carrick on Benjamin Sesko

United are next in action against Sunderland on Saturday, so we should get another update from Michael Carrick later this week.

BRUNO UNLUCKY

United were electric in the first half, with energy and a real purpose about their play.

Cunha’s deflected effort put them in front, before Sesko survived a VAR check for handball to make it 2-0.

Bruno Fernandes (£10.4m) banked a Fantasy assist for Sesko’s strike, and very nearly got on the scoresheet himself, with his half-volley zipping just wide of the post.

The Portuguese playmaker created six chances for his teammates, including two Opta ‘big chances created’, finishing the match with 1.02 expected goal involvement (xGI).

Above: Players from Man Utd v Liverpool sorted by xGI

Booked in the second-half, Bruno was a bit unfortunate not to register more than five points.

United regained the lead with a fine low strike from Mainoo, who was his side’s standout performer.

Elsewhere, Casemiro (£5.8m) failed to produce an attacking return but did bank defensive contribution (DefCon) points for the third successive Gameweek.

In that time (Gameweek 33-35), his tally of 66 DefCons is at least 14 more than any other player.

SZOBOSZLAI HAUL

Liverpool’s poor first-half display ultimately cost them, but their performance after the break was much better.

Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m) scored a superb individual goal, then unselfishly assisted Cody Gakpo (£7.3m), who racked up five shots in total, to claim 13 points.

It consequently took Liverpool just 10 minutes of the second half to pull level.

Szoboszlai was key to that, but having tasted defeat, Liverpool probably still need a few more points to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Next up is Chelsea, before clashes against Aston Villa and Brentford to finish the campaign.

SLOT ON ISAK INJURY

There was no Alexander Isak (£10.3m) in Liverpool’s squad at Old Trafford.

He missed out with a minor groin issue.

Speaking before the match, Arne Slot said:

“After our last win against Palace, you go into the week and in the start, you already know you’re going to miss out on Mo [Salah], and then during the week we miss out on Alex as well. But that’s not the first time this season. Arsenal away, we had our both No 9s not available as well and we were able to play a good game. So, it is the situation so accept it. Of course, very unlucky and unhappy with the fact Alex picked up a small – really small – injury. That’s why this game came a bit too early.” – Arne Slot

Slot later added:

“It wasn’t much but unfortunately it was too much for him to be able to play. And Alisson [Becker] hasn’t trained with us yet, so that makes it quite simple. We’re hoping for him to be ready next week but we have to wait and see how the week will go. The same can be said about Alex, we’re hoping to have him back next week. But that’s small margins, as it always is in football.” – Arne Slot

With Isak, Mohamed Salah (£14.0m) and Hugo Ekitike (£9.0m) all unavailable, Slot initially played Florian Wirtz (£8.3m) and Szoboszlai as the two most advanced options in a 4-2-2-2, before shifting to more of a 4-2-3-1 after the break, with Gakpo through the middle.

Jeremie Frimpong (£5.7m) was a straight swap for Salah on the right, with Curtis Jones (£5.4m) continuing at right-back.

Back to being a pretty bad pick again. He was never in the thoughts of people until he got a whiff of pen share and then as always he got hyper elevated by the models for that. Don't believe me? Ndiaye is constantly in the top 10 or so midfielders for projections despite his non-pen output being dreadful. Hes a worse pick than KDH and Garner from Everton alone but the models won't hear of it.

I’m pretty sure there was a time when Morgan Rogers was compared to Jude Bellingham.

He’s more like Delle Ali or Ross Barkley.
    Absolutely overhyped and useless.

I'd be in favour of players prices rises and falling much quicker (0.5's) so they better reflect how popular players are/are preforming in FPL. So we don't ended up with players like Salah this year who is massively overpriced for his output, or Palmer a couple of years back been massively under-priced.

      1. Sir Michael Taker
        • 11 Years
        2 days, 7 hours ago

I think they might have created themselves a problem around value with the defcon, at least until they fix the pricing around it. You don't need expensive defenders to do well, you don't need a 3rd striker because your 5th mid is a 4pt floor. The game has changed and they didn't price that effectively

If Def Con thresholds remain next season, simply add an extra point for every goal scored per position.

Possibly 2 points for a penalty assist.

          Reward goals scored.

          1. Sir Michael Taker
            • 11 Years
            2 days, 6 hours ago

Trouble is, and this is related to the set-piece domination, some of these DEFCON guys are also getting more goals than normal so you end up boosting some of them even more. Casemiro has the same amount goals as Mbeumo and Cunha for example at the extreme end. I notice the Fantasy EFL game rewards attempts on target and that might be a less noisy metric that separates out the guys who are genuinely attacking and the guys who are just getting the odd goal off their only attempt.

No because of mins uncertainty and across the two fixtures they are 67% likely to keep no cleans on Solio/RobtT projections. You can't even say they'll defcon with any certainty as they are heavily linked to mins played. Given they also have bad fixtures to end the season (Brentford away, Arsenal home) you can't even dress it up as an investment over a few games because you probably won't play them unless you are desperate in 37 and 38.

Its not an exciting answer but its Bowen because of the corners, the occasional defcon, more routes to points. Home fixture too vs away for Brentford. I doubt either of them punish non-owners though with those fixtures so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Thanks, I was thinking the defcon possibility in a tough fixture might just nudge it Bowen’s way. You’re probably right it doesn’t matter much either way, but I still have the scars from benching Thiago’s hat-trick

        1. Sir Michael Taker
          • 11 Years

That would be the only argument I could see the other way, that Thiago's ceiling is higher than Bowen on a given week and if Bowen's isn't that high anyway this week it might just be worth the risk of losing out 2-4 points. I'd still be going Bowen but I've not been scarred by Thiago lol.

I think you've got a problem because the triple Palace almost forces you down a BB route because this is obviously their best week with two fixtures and they are 20% of your squad. Without that I'd be going TC all day long because I think Thiago is by far your most powerful benched option and he has a bad fixture this week but his best week is against your Palace defenders so that's not great for a BB either.

BB. Palace keeper and defenders not good CS bets but in DGW could throw in few defcons, saves, possible but slim attacking returns to bring up your points. Can bench them next GW. O'Reilly a punty capain?

Is any Palace players worth buying for their double? Was fairly set on Munoz, but taken off at half time yesterday I'm less sure.

I think the unexpected benching of Richards and Mitchell and then sub of Munoz when people felt the back 5 (6 if you include Henderson) was the only secure bit has probably got people concerned. Henderson is probably secure as he's the captain and generally you don't mess about in goal, but if you're on Raya currently which a lot will be then I'm not sure that the double for Palace is any better than Raya vs West Ham. I suppose to counter that Palace were very bad yesterday and he might revert back to his previous strategy in defence at least but equally he might double down and Lacroix is the next fall guy. Too much uncertainty for me over such a low ceiling anyway.

I hadn't realised they must have a very small pool of available officials since Jarred Gillett went from assistant VAR for Leeds-Burnley on Friday to refereeing Arsenal-Fulham the next day. The assistant VAR on Man Utd-Liverpool was the linesman for Leeds-Burnley. Anthony Taylor was 4th official at Old Trafford and is refereeing Chelsea-Forest today. I just assumed they'd get one role over a weekend but seems they are multitasking quite often

See how Forest get on today

But you'd say if West Ham lose their next two games, against Arsenal and up at Newcastle they're probably getting relegated.

They'll possibly have to take Bruno G out early on, to have a chance.

Forest and Spurs have tricky fixtures too but West Ham need more points on the board.

Why are the games today scheduled at 5 hours apart?

Not enough consideration for the arm chair fans...

    Yesterday's schedules were overlapping too.

        Cheers

But Villa still played first and rotated heavily

To advantage Spurs in the relegation battle

I suspect Forest can't do that today
