Shortly after the relaunch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for 2026/27, we attempted to pick out the best £4.0m defenders in the game.

Now that every club has completed their pre-season matches, we have an even better idea of which of these bargain buys will start in Gameweek 1.

In this piece, we rank the best £4.0m defenders ahead of Friday’s deadline.

1 BOBBY THOMAS
2 AURELE AMENDA

Centre-half Bobby Thomas looks set to start the season in Coventry City’s back four.

He lined up next to Aurele Amenda in Friday’s friendly win over Monaco, with Liam Kitching benched.

Image from FotMob

The line-up used in that match is hopefully a good indicator of the Gameweek 1 starting XI, even if there is a bit more uncertainty longer-term, particularly with Kitching lurking.

Thomas should get through plenty of defensive work this season, so there is defensive contribution (DefCon) point potential.

He’s got a bit of attacking threat from set plays, too: three goals and four assists in the Championship last season, with 37 shots in total.

Amenda, meanwhile, hasn’t scored a senior competitive goal at all in his career, although he did find the net on Friday – only for Thomas to be flagged offside for interfering!

If you are a Gameweek 2 Bench Booster, when Coventry host Hull City, they are undoubtedly worth a look.

3 ISSA DIOP

FPL pre-season: 14

Issa Diop impressed at this summer’s World Cup, and has since joined Ipswich Town from Fulham for £8.5m.

An Ipswich defender will likely appeal to those Fantasy managers on a Gameweek 1 Bench Boost, with Gary O’Neil’s men set to host Sunderland. Remember, the Black Cats scored just 17 away goals in 2025/26.

Above: Teams sorted by clean sheet odds in Gameweek 1, via our free Fixture Ticker

As for Diop, he averaged only 6.72 DefCons per 90 minutes (p90) at Fulham last season. But playing for Ipswich, you’d think he’ll have much more defensive work to get through.

Indeed, we can look back at healthier figures in previous seasons in London.

At 6ft 4in, he could pose a bit of goal threat from set plays, too.

Longer-term, Dara O’Shea could take back his centre-back spot (more on that later), but for now, Diop looks like one of the best £4.0m defenders for Gameweek 1.

4 LUKE O’NIEN

It’s almost exclusively the £4.0m defenders from the promoted clubs who offer the best chance of starts in Gameweek 1.

However, with Nordi Mukiele (£5.5m) and Omar Alderete (£5.0m) both potentially benched at Sunderland on the opening weekend, Luke O’Nien could be a decent cheap option, even if his run in the first XI will probably be brief. In all likelihood, he’s a short-term pick only – but that’s maybe all you’re after.

Certainly, if you’re after a £4.0m defender for Gameweek 1 Bench Boost duty, he looks like being one of the only options outside of the three newly-promoted clubs.

O’Nien averaged only 6.87 DefCons p90 last season, but did record four shots from set plays across his final four outings.

5 LEIF DAVIS
6 DARA O’SHEA

The FPL Watchlist: Villa up, Palace down 4

Leif Davis and Dara O’Shea both look set to join Diop in Ipswich’s Gameweek 1 starting XI.

O’Shea, an ever-present starter at centre-back in the Championship last season, has recently been deployed as a right-back by O’Neil, with Diop and Jacob Greaves the preferred centre-halves.

O’Shea has started the last four friendlies for Ipswich. He was among the top two Tractor Boys players for pre-season minutes, too.

He scored only once in the Championship last season, but did rack up 42 shots, including 11 from inside the opposition six-yard box.

A right-back role would naturally increase his potential for open-play attacking returns. Indeed, he scored in the friendly against Union Berlin on Saturday!

As for Davis, he’s really caught the eye going forward in pre-season. Over the summer, he’s already got four attacking returns to his name, the most of any Ipswich player.

Town’s creator-in-chief, he finished among the top 10 Championship players for key passes last season, helped by a role on set plays.

However, Davis underwhelmed in his last season in the top flight, when he scored just one goal and supplied two assists.

As a result, it’s really the more reliable DefCon options we should probably be looking at, as they’re going to arrive with more regularity than the odd goal and assist.

For that reason, Diop feels like the superior Ipswich option in the current set-up.

7 MILAN VAN EWIJK

First-choice right-back Milan van Ewijk is another cheap option to consider at the back for Coventry.

He’s currently owned by 15.0% of Fantasy squads, having caught the eye in the Championship last season with eight assists. He also created 46 chances for his teammates.

While there’s no real DefCon potential, van Ewijk has already banked an attacking return in pre-season.

He frequently wreaks havoc in the penalty box with his long throws, too, so he deserves a mention in this piece.

OTHERS

FPL promoted teams: What to expect from Hull’s defence 5

We will certainly see some other £4.0m defenders from the promoted clubs in action in Gameweek 1.

For Hull, they are in the process of a big squad overhaul, so the rotation risk is a reason to avoid them in the early weeks. They had some pretty awful defensive stats in 2025/26, too.

Centre-backs John Egan and Semi Ajayi got the nod to start Hull’s final pre-season friendly, and the former did score three times last season.

But will they start in Gameweek 2, when the fixture for the Tigers is at least playable? A substitute in Saturday’s friendly, record signing Noble Mendy will also surely threaten the starting XI soon.

Hull left-back Ryan Giles supplied eight assists in the Championship last season and is on some set plays. But he’s got competition from new arrival Matt Targett and maybe even Elliot Stroud (£5.0m midfielder) now, and it’s probably the DefCon centre-backs we should be looking at anyway.

Finally, Jacob Greaves was the Ipswich defender with the best rate of DefCons in 2025/26, but his game time currently feels a bit less secure, particularly if O’Shea reverts to the middle.

    Hi all,
Feedback on my current WC. Been tinkering with no Haaland or Bruno drafts, but quite like this one with both (only Semenyo missing I would like to have).

    Kinsky
    Calafiori White Maguire
    Bruno Mbeumo Tzolis Le Fee
    Haaland JP DCL

Easy to move to another player. An attacking Everton MF could be ideal in that scenario.

I have this BB GW 1 tema ready with a planned move in GW 3 to do Bruno + Thiago ➡ Haaland + Slater

    Kinsky - Verbruggen
    Calafiori - Mosquera - Tarkowski - Maguire - O’Nien
    Bruno - Mbeumo - Semenyo - Tzolis - Gross
    Isak - Pedro - Thiago

But he Haaland starts well and rises 0.1m over the first 2 weeks then I’m toast. Would need a chip in GW 3 to get Haaland or a hit.

Worth the risk or just stick with Haaland?

Haaland very heavily owned means he’s unlikely to rise, the risk is more Bruno or Thiago dropping.

I think it’s worth the risk. If you’re worried, find a way to bank 0.5m for insurance, that will help you handle other price rises too!

Tzolis to a 6.0, Tarkowski to a 5.5/5.0 (think Muharemovic or Vuskovic could probably be just as good for £1m cheaper!), Groß to Gomez if he’s fit. I’d do something like that

      Stick with Haaland.

Still the best striker in the prem by a wide margin and he will get chances.

Feels a nice risk / reward to start GW1 with. Should play first GWs at least and seems to be involved.

If it doesn’t work out after 2 GWs, I guess it’s an easy switch to other alternatives at or around that price point

I expect he’ll return GW1 and maybe 2, but then might become a problem as either Martinelli takes minutes off him or a new winger is signed to potentially start ahead of him.

I think he’ll be great when he plays, but Arsenal will rotate in attack this year, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Arteta tries to focus on winning CL having won the PL last year

    6. Nomar

Everyone assumes that he’s going to lose his place in a few GW's time.

I’m not sure what this is based on, though, as I don’t think anyone knows what Arteta’s plans are. I certainly don’t.

He could be a dud. He could be this years Cole Palmer circa 2024/5.

I don't know if I like O'Reilly for GW1+2, but apart from that it looks good - like nearly every non Haaland team. Maybe one Fodder more with so much money in the XI, so any 4.0 DEF for Rodon

O.Dango did well last serason, and according to some article on here more secure mins than Schade who could also be a good pick.

Ampadu is a bit of a long shot for 8th attacker, but for BB GW2 the Brighton alternatives (Gross/Gomez) have Chelsea away. He did return decent points last season

Imho it's only sensible to try to start close to the template early on, the key is to try to stay ahead of the curve as the season progresses

One needs more than one point to define a curve

I mean. Its either optimal to follow the template or its not. If you think its better to be ahead of the curve theres no reason not to do that from the start.

On BB, primary gamble is on triple cs points from your bench defenders and goalkeeper , so then Coventry vs. Hull stands out. Any attacking returns from 8th attacker would be bonus

Everyone jumping on Tzolis. My concern in general for Arsenal mids is that Arteta has 15 available players to pick from. At the beginning of the season I always want to have nailed on 90 minute players if possible and so getting an Arsenal midfielder is proving difficult.
Who do you think is totally nailed?

I think our three most nailed players are Declan Rice, Bruno Guimaraes, Martin Odegaard, and Bukayo Saka.

      The rest are coin tosses.

        Agree in the main Taf
Saka — absolutely nailed when fit.
Rice — absolutely nailed when fit.
Ødegaard — very close to nailed; captain and central to how Arteta plays.
Bruno Guimarães — first-choice IMO, but not quite the same level of certainty.

good point. Martinelli might well be leaving which leaves only one left winger...
          However, Eze, Madueke even
Quite possible he goes with Eze–Havertz/Gyökeres–Saka
Tzolis very interesting though - he might just be nailed!

If he starts Eze (who's terrible on the wing) or Madueke (who's just terrible) after Tzolis just bagged 2 assists to win a "trophy", then he's lost the plot

Arsenal have two nailed players rn.

      1. David Raya
      2. Gabriel

Others will probably start most games or get plenty of minutes, but I expect Arteta to rest players in PL more this year give we were forced to play the CL final with four of our best players (Saka, Rice, Timber, Saliba) carrying injuries. We’ve also appointed a new doctor who will (hopefully) be more sensible about whether players are fit.

I think Arsenal XI GW1 is probably

      Raya
      White Mosquera Gabriel Calafiori
      MLS Guimaraes
      Madueke Odegaard Tzolis
      Gyokeres

Though I’m not totally sure if it will be Havertz up top instead.

That XI will probably start most games at the moment until players start to come back, at which point the first XI (before any further transfer activity) would be

      Raya
      Timber Saliba Gabriel Calafiori
      Rice Guimaraes
      Saka Odegaard Tzolis
      Havertz

Greaves is the best Ipswich defender imo.

Higher defcon and despite being a little shorter than Diop, he has the same aerial duels rate. Greaves is great in the air.

Ipswich have exclusively started games with Greaves + Diop/O'Shea at CB under this new manager. Diop and O'Shea have been the central pairing for around 8 minutes in total, towards the end of one of the games. O'Neil seems to like Greaves (LCB/LB) covering the space behind Leif Davis when he bombs forward.

For me it's Greaves if you want a CB, Davis if you want to roll the dice on attacking returns.

Aerial duels won %, according to Fotmob:

        Greaves (Championship 25/26): 66.1%
        Diop (Premier League 25/26): 60.0%

I would say so. Diop's is a small sample, but looking back through his previous Premier League seasons it tends to stay close to 60%.
