We had our first proper look at each team’s main set-piece takers in Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Many of the players involved at dead-ball situations were carrying off where they left off in 2025/26 or in pre-season.

But there are a few new set-play pretenders to report on following the opening weekend.

NOTES

SZOBOSZLAI ON… EVERYTHING

FPL notes: Iraola on Szoboszlai pen + Wissa back to his best

Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m) was the only Premier League player to register a clean sweep of set pieces in Gameweek 1.

On corners, crossed free-kicks and direct free-kicks, he completed the set with a stoppage-time penalty on Tyneside.

The undisputed first choice on spot-kicks, then? Andoni Iraola stopped short of confirming that on Sunday; you can find some quotes from both player and manager in our Scout Notes.

NEW SIGNINGS ON SET PLAYS

Will Anderson be a better or worse FPL pick at Man City? 1

Morgan Rogers (£7.5m), Hayden Hackney (£5.5m), Sasa Lukic (£5.0m), Abdul Fatawu (£5.5m), Harry Wilson (£6.5m), Elliot Anderson (£6.5m) and Andrew Robertson (£4.5m) were straight into the set-piece mix at their respective clubs.

Many of these had taken corners for their new clubs in pre-season, too. Anderson, indeed, had delivered three in the Community Shield.

It should be pointed out that Rogers’ corner was taken short at Craven Cottage. In fact, three of Chelsea’s four corners on Monday, all taken by different players, went short.

Wilson’s transfer to Leeds will be worth monitoring. Anton Stach (£6.0m) was taking corners from both sides at Leeds towards the end of last season, but his new teammate may be eating into his share. At least the German still has direct free-kicks, scoring from one in Gameweek 1.

RETURNING TO THE FRAY

FPL pre-season: Ndiaye back on pens + Bruno G debut 1

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£6.5m) was a regular on corners and free-kicks at the beginning of last season but his involvement ebbed away in the second half of 2025/26.

He was back on corners on Saturday – although it should be said that regular taker James Garner (£6.0m) was only fit enough for bench duty in Gameweek 1.

Lewis Hall (£5.0m), like his near-namesake at Everton, saw set-piece opportunities harder to come by after January of this year. However, with Messrs Tonali, Gordon and Trippier gone, he took all three of Newcastle’s corners/crossed free-kicks on Sunday.

Morgan Gibbs-White (£8.0m), meanwhile, has already matched the total number of crossed free-kicks/corners that he delivered in the whole of last season!

TZOLIS KNOWS HIS PLACE?

FPL Gameweek 2 early Scout Picks: All-in on Arsenal v Villa

Christos Tzolis’ (£6.5m) corners were a real weapon in pre-season but when the meaningful action got underway on Friday, it was last season’s pair of Bukayo Saka (£9.5m) and, from Tzolis’s side, Declan Rice (£7.5m) who carried on where they left off in 2025/26.

The Greek winger might have to bide his time at set plays for now, then.

ANOTHER STRING TO DE CUYPER’S BOW

FPL notes: De Cuyper + Hinshelwood hauls, Villa injury latest

Maxim De Cuyper‘s (£4.5m) ‘out of position’ run-outs on the left wing are gaining plenty of FPL attention. But the Belgian full-back also has set pieces in his armory, with his pre-season corner-taking duties spilling over into Gameweek 1.

Yankuba Minteh‘s (£6.0m) absence not only opens up a spot on the flanks for De Cuyper but means one fewer rival for corners on the right.

Why weren't we given fair warning that Alonso lies to the media in the scout report when he joined Chelsea?

Im on 7.5k overall, best start ever. Let's try and win this!

    What is sensible?
    A) Roll (and most likely use 2FT in GW3 to go Bruno > 5.5 and Isak > Haaland for triple cap
    B) Wildcard and chase the points in GW2

    Verbruggen / Lammens
    White / Cala / Cuyper / Hume / NWilliams
    Ndiaye / Szob / Bruno / Boomo / Semenyo
    Isak / Thiago / JP

    Morning all

Did better than expected on 68 points without a BB but trying to work out this week:

    Kinksy
    Maguire/ Calafori/ White/ Hume
    Bruno F/ Mbeumo/ Sangare
    JP/ Haaland/ DCL
    Vert/ Tzollis/ Gross/ Diop

    Questions-
    1. Vert vs Kinksy
    2. DCL vs Tzollis/ Hume

Normally I would always play home advantage but Villa look awful and not sure what happened to DCL last week!

      I'd play Tsolis over DCL.

Fulham's fixtures aren't that bad, either. They play Sunderland in 2, Palace in 3 (who both looked poor in gwk1) then Liverpool and Man Utd, who are shipping goals. Then they have Ipswich, Hull, Coventry and Villa.

This WC wk2 draft feels like one that could get points with the current era of set pieces and defcon. Every midfield is on pens or set pieces, and others are defcon monsters.

    Kinksy
    Cala White Konsa
    Bruno Palmer Anderson Sangare Szob
    Pedro Haaland (c)

    Dub, Amenda Egan W-E

Obviously longterm Bruno perhaps in week 5/6 once CL comes can be moved to a Saka/Semenyo and perhaps Gabriel /O Reilly / Tarkowski into the backline but otherwise feels very decent.

Amenda can cover Konsa for week 2.

    2. Warby84

I don’t like triple defence blocks an attacking asset, Kinsky is a poor choice, also Tzolis is the same price as Anderson who I think got injured, so better options in that position.

      1. FPL_trail_runner
        • 6 Years

Triple defence is only until week 6, taking advantage of the cheap temporary options of Arsenal. Arsenal have by far the best odds every week of cleansheets, even when away , they are a powerhouse and before Timber + Saliba come back and CL rotations come its worth taking some edge

Longterm Bruno will go to an Arsenal mid for leeds home week 6 , and the Arsenal fixtures upturn. Anderson was on course for defcon before going off with cramp (Maresca said), and is on set pieces. Tzolis will probably not be able to match him.

Can't see any final Opta updates, they were supposed to be done by 9am.

League tables still updating, auto subs not added yet in the main game so ranks can still change for Gw1 positions.

The status is showing as "confirmed" so I guess the points are now locked if they haven't changed. FPL just needs to do the autosubs etc.

FPL has always been sequential - points finalised first, then autosubs etc. They won't do the autosubs before the points are finalised.

I preferred Sangare even before his first game, so yes from me.

I’d probably expect more steady 4-6 pointers though mainly through defcon and occasional attacking return

Current bench order this week is:
    Verbruggen, Maguire, Ndiaye, Muharemovic.

    Kinsky
    Gabriel, Calafiori, Ballard
    Bruno, Mbeumo, Palmer, Tzolis
    Pedro, DCL, Brobbey.

    Would you change anything?

I’d probably play Maguire over DCL personally

I'm playing Ndiaye and Maguire over DCL and Brobbey I reckon. This team is a bench nightmare every week.

I'm finding it very difficult to bench DCL 🙁

Medium term which combo do we prefer:

Raya/4.0 Keeper (Palmer?) and De Cuypet

    Verbruggen/Kinsky and Calafori

Rest of defence is Gabriel, Konsa, Diop and Muharemović

Dubravka will probably get a game soon

      1. Yeah maybe - that second keeper spot is pretty much a dead spot with Raya and I’ve not bench boosted yet either FWIW

Thoughts on selling Wirtz for another mid?
Have a feeling he won’t start this week
