There are 15 Premier League teams in midweek EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League action.

And whenever there are midweek games, we often get accompanying pre-match press conferences.

We’ve already heard from six top-flight managers on Monday – and now, it’s the turn of three others (the bosses of Brighton and Hove Albion, Manchester United and Sunderland), who all play on Wednesday.

However, we haven’t seen anything new from the head coaches of Aston Villa, Coventry City or Everton, who are also in action tomorrow night.

But first, an update from the Chelsea training ground…

FRESH INJURY UPDATES ON TUESDAY

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE OTHER CLUBS WHO PLAY ON WEDNESDAY

CHELSEA

Chelsea are one of five Premier League clubs who have the midweek off.

No press conference for them, then, but we do have an injury update of sorts to bring you courtesy of Sky Sports.

Joao Pedro and Reece James were not see in the part of training in which Sky cameras were present.

Neither was Moises Caicedo (calf), who has sat out the last two league matches.

However, Marco Palestra (unspecified) and Jordan Henderson (wrist) were spotted.

The reasons for the absences of Pedro and James are not yet known.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Luke Shaw could return on Wednesday after missing the Manchester derby with a minor issue.

Amad Diallo (unspecified), Manuel Ugarte (knee), Matthijs de Ligt (back) and Tom Heaton (hamstring) remain out, however.

“Amad, not quite close, in terms of days. We’ll see as the week progresses.

“Matta [De Ligt] is just working his way back, really. So, because of the timeframe on it, and how it’s been, I don’t want to really put too much of a timeframe on it.

“[Luke] could possibly be fit for Brighton but we’ll [see]. It’s not clear cut but it’s a matter of a few days rather than anything else.” – Michael Carrick

Carlos Baleba (ankle) does, too, but he’ll be back in training next week. We could see him in Gameweek 6, then.

“Yeah, he definitely will be, yeah. He’ll be back in and around the group at some point over the next week or so. So, that means, after the internationals, he should be in good shape.” – Michael Carrick on if Carlos Baleba will be back after the September international break

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Fabian Hurzeler repeated his comments from last week in saying that Georginio Rutter (unspecified) is “close”.

Femi Azeez (hamstring) continues to be assessed on a daily basis, meanwhile.

“Like I said last time, I think Rutter can be close.

“Femi, we have to go day by day.

“We have to see also how training is going today.

“The positive is that there are no new injury concerns. So, we have the same squad available, and that’s also a positive.” – Fabian Hurzeler

Mats Wieffer (knee), Jack Hinshelwood (unspecified), Yankuba Minteh (leg), Evan Ferguson (ankle), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Zadok Yohanna (unspecified) and Stefanos Tzimas (knee) remain out.

“He had a small setback in his rehab. Nothing big but it takes a little bit longer than we expected it to take.

“I can’t give a clear schedule when he will be back but it goes in the right direction.” – Fabian Hurzeler on Stefanos Tzimas

SUNDERLAND

Reinildo is available for Wednesday’s Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar as his one-match ban, picked up in Gameweek 4, is only for domestic action.

Romaine Mundle (knee) and Habib Diarra (hamstring) remain out.

Away from injury news, Regis Le Bris was asked about juggling his squad. Premier League meetings with Arsenal and Manchester City book-end the midweek game.

“I think we want to go strong in both competitions and it’s important for our fans and for the club, as well. The depth of the squad is getting better, as well, so we’ll need more than 11 players to be efficient and competitive.

“It’s still early in the season, so they are not tired.” – Regis Le Bris

ASTON VILLA

Joao Gomes is back available following his three-game domestic ban.

Brian Madjo (unknown), Leon Goretzka (knee) and Amadou Onana (knee) remain out.

And, in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest, Pau Torres (hamstring) and Ian Maatsen (ankle) are set to be sidelined for weeks.

Matty Cash has missed the last two games in league and cup with a minor issue.

EVERTON

As mentioned earlier, we have not had any midweek media work from David Moyes.

The Everton boss did, however, confirm straight after Sunday’s stalemate in north London that Merlin Rohl was injured.

“He picked up an injury, he got it in the Man United game.” – David Moyes on Merlin Rohl

Christian Nørgaard (groin) remains out, too.

COVENTRY CITY

Taiwo Awoniyi begins a three-match ban following his sending off on Sunday.

Haji Wright (quad), Luke Woolfenden (knee), Josh Eccles (unspecified) and Kaine Kesler-Hayden (hamstring) remain out, meanwhile.

Frank Onyeka will also be assessed after picking up a hand injury.

Wow, you have some serious cash ITB

It’s one of A or F for me. I’ll say F because Arsenal look fantastic and Brighton have been a little suspect defensively, whereas we don’t quite know exactly what we’re getting with Forest and Coventry just yet. A reminder that Coventry have already played City and Arsenal away and yet their xGC isn’t as terrible as we might expect it to be. They finished the Brighton game with 10 men and had been somewhat in the game until the red card

      Garner got 160pts last season.

38 starts last season, averaging 90 mins per game, set pieces, one of the highest DC rates in the game...

If he gets penalties too he's getting over 180pts.

I don't know what people are doing. Why is he only 0.2% owned. Am I going mad?

        Garner on pens, whaaat?

As an Everton fan no he won't be, he took one last season in cup but it will be Barry on pens in the league. Barry took one well in preseason, and as the striker it's his to take.

Taking one over Ndiaye in a friendly was clearly a muck around. Plus Garner wasn't on the pitch.

Why does being the striker make any difference in modern football? Liverpool fans made the same argument for Isak taking pens over Szobo.

            1. AAAFootball
              • 1 Year
              2 hours, 50 mins ago

Ik he wasn't on the pitch but it did seem as if the6 knew ndaiye might leave and wanted another taker. Plus Barry is improving so much, so it would make sense to let him take the pens at some point, and likely sooner rather than later.

Didn't Ndiaye take the next two in pre-season with Barry on the pitch? That doesn't seem like a handover ceremony.

He did indeed, I meant more like securing a back up option as the ndaiye rumours actually cooled down a lot after arsenal signed Tzolis as they were the rumoured candidates. Of course city then bought him, but yeah, I'm not Moyes, but maybe he was trying not to push ndaiye out the door?

FA Cup last season against Sunderland, 89th minute, Everton are 2-1 down. They win a pen. High pressure. Garner and Barry both on the pitch. Garner steps up and equalises, sending the game to extra time. He was the one trusted in that pivotal moment.

Moyes has also spoken about Garner taking more resposibility.

All the evidence points to Garner taking pens.

          1. AAAFootball
            • 1 Year

Yes, I do remember that, but I believe he then missed in the shootout also, and I think also that was an out of form Barry with little confidence but I feel like this season it will be Barry now.

Not to say I don't love Garner as both a player and an FPL pick, but I would not expect him to take a pen this season.

Fair. I guess we won't know for sure until you get a pen.

But I've found the "striker should take pens" argument to rarely hold up. These days it's usually the set piece takers, the cleanest ball strikers.

              Fingers crossed it's Garner.

Yeah, and even if no pens you still will have almost every other set piece so I would still take Garner off that and Defcon alone.

    who would you cap?

A - Bruno. good match if united are just to rely on quick transitions this season
B - Palmer. brentford defence looking abit leaky with collins joining vdb on sidelines, dominated for 2 separate 45 mins against sunderland and bournemouth last 2 GWs. chelsea could produce a similar attacking burst as vs brighton first half. 343 should come back, prefer palmer in that coming in from the right. long fpl GW if he gets 4 or less first up
C - Saka. arguably best attack of the 3 , been getting big chances all season long, madueke got loads of mins today so i doubt saka comes off tbh. brighton conceded quite a few chances vs leeds at home recently

was set on bruno but united were just abit bad last gw, and fulham took quite a big step forwards last week

    1. Mr Turnip 1

      C

I don’t have Saka, but if I did I would captain over Bruno. Fulham’s improvement came about after an apparently much called for personnel change at the back, so it might actually last

I’m captaining Bruno over Palmer because I still think Fulham is a better fixture than Brentford

Same. I wait for City’s cup game on Thu to check Ndiaye’s minutes.

      Sell.

But only use 1FT this week, there’s an IB coming up

Gvardiol if you want a City defender I think.

Munoz at Forest an alternative great shout

was Gross priced with the expectation that he'd be on pens?

Doubt it. Hadn’t taken one in like 3 years due to Pedro /Wellbeck being on them.

Then you’re set, no need for Branthwaite

Is MGW worth the extra over Odegaard? They're the main 2 I'm thinking about as my Wirtz replacement

Best 4.5m keeper - is it just between Verb and Kinsky?

      It’s probably Kinsky

Bench a) davis eve b) shaw ful. I assume b but worried about ipswich conceeding a few

      B

At least when they’ve both conceded, Davis might get an attacking return

Who's the best £5.0m option at defence for the next gameweek, Neco Williams for Coventry City at home, or Malick Thiaw for Hull City at home?!

MGW rising tonight... Anyone here buying him tonight?

I think I just might sell Szoboszlai for him. But rolling to 2 FT is also viable...

I thought long and hard over this one, and way before Szobos’s goal tonight, i decided to just keep him, i think Coventry will be up for that game and it does smell of “trap’ a little bit

        I hear you.

I am probably making it anyway since I am very likely using WC in 6.

If planning to WC I’d be much more inclined to make the move, I WC’d last GW so I’m naturally a bit more sketchy haha, but absolute best of luck if ya do bud!

Don’t think any of them are that worth it. Either have fodder or get Sangare (consistent but not explosive), King (good short-medium term), or Groß (good long term)
