As we turn our attention to the latest movements in midfield on our Watchlist following yesterdayโ€™s look at the goalkeepers and defenders, the theme remains the same, with Arsenal assets in demand ahead of double Gameweek 37. Elsewhere, though, there are a number of new faces this time around, with Marc Albrighton and Jordi Gomez getting the nod following their double-digit hauls last weekend.

Alexis Sanchez solidified his position as the number one midfielder for the final few weeks of the season after bagging a brace in Arsenalโ€™s 3-1 win at Hull. The 11.3-priced Chile international was in outstanding form at the KC Stadium, registering eight goal attempts, five from inside the box, and creating three chances. With the fixtures (SWA, mun/SUN, WBA) firmly in his favour, it is no surprise to see the former Barcelona man has been transferred in by over 45,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers already this week.

Following blanks against Arsenal and Leicester, Eden Hazard returned to the scoresheet in Chelseaโ€™s 1-0 win against Crystal Palace. The Blues remaining three matches (LIV, wba, SUN) are reasonable, and while some reckon Jose Mourinhoโ€™s side may not play with the same intensity now the title has been wrapped up, you could also argue they are now afforded more freedom in the final third from this point onwards. For those keen to find a place for Sanchez in the five-man midfields, though, the Belgian could be the fall guy.

Like Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey justified his place on the Watchlist with an impressive performance against Hull, bagging a goal and an assist. The Wales international has managed a decent six shots from inside the box in his last four appearances, and coming in at 8.7 in FPL, looks ripe for investment ahead of the Gunners tasty run-in, provided he shrugs off the knock he picked up on Monday night.

Manchester Cityโ€™s David Silva moves back towards the top of our ladder after grabbing an assist and maximum bonus in the 1-0 win at Tottenham. The Spanish playmaker created four chances at White Hart Lane, although in his fifth consecutive match without finding the back of the net, he worryingly failed to register a goal attempt. With a decent set of fixtures (QPR, swa, SOT) though, the 9.5-valued Silva could still be set for a strong end to the season.

With a goal and two assists in his last two outings, Marc Albrighton takes over from Esteban Cambiasso as our preferred Leicester midfield option. The 4.2-rated winger has created nine chances over that period, joint highest among all midfielders, while he has also managed a respectable three shots from inside the box. With the schedule (SOT, sun, QPR) still friendly for the Foxes, the former Aston Villa man could provide great value for the final three Gameweeks of the campaign.

Jack Grealish finds himself just behind Albrighton in the pecking order, with his underlying stats not quite as impressive as the Leicester wide man. The 4.3-priced midfielder has created six chances in his last two appearances, but has only registered one shot from inside the box. Aston Villa face two of their final three league encounters at home (WHM, sot, BUR), where they have scored six goals in their last two matches, so Grealishโ€™s prospects do look pretty bright considering his lowly price tag.

With little to choose between Sebastian Larsson and Jordi Gomez, the importance of penalty duties, as shown on the weekend, means weโ€™re backing the latter in our Watchlist rankings. The Spaniardโ€™s 15-point haul against Southampton will prove hard to repeat, bearing in mind his two penalties were the only goal attempts he made in the 2-1 win.Valued at 5.1 in FPL, the former Wigan midfielder could be worth a punt as a differential given his 0.3% ownership, with the Black Cats double in Gameweek 37 (LEI/ars) just around the corner.

Liverpoolโ€™s Philippe Coutinho is back on our radar after bagging a 13-point haul in the 2-1 victory against QPR. The goal and assist were the Brazilianโ€™s first attacking returns in his last five outings, but with his underlying stats over the last four Gameweeks more impressive than Raheem Sterlingโ€™s (22 goal attempts to eight, six shots inside the box to five and 11 chances created to eight), the 7.9-rated midfielder takes over from the England international as our favoured Reds midfield option ahead of their final three matches (che, CPL, sto). With no attacking points in his last three appearances, it probably isnโ€™t a surprise to see Sterling leading the transfers out this week, with over 55,000 FPL managers shedding the midfielder.

Despite failing to back up his double-digit haul from Gameweek 34 in Swanseaโ€™s 2-0 win against Stoke, Gylfi Sigurdsson moves up a couple of places on our ladder. The 6.5-priced midfielder has managed eight goal attempts, four from inside the box and created six chances since the Swans switched back to the 4-2-3-1 system in the 3-2 victory at Newcastle, heightening his appeal as a mid-price midfield option. With the fixtures (ars, MCI, cpl) not in his favour, though, the Iceland international may struggle to attract any new suitors before the end of the season.

Kevin Mirallas remains in our thoughts despite blanking in Evertonโ€™s 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa. The Toffees face a reasonable run-in (SUN, whm, TOT), and having scored in two of his last three appearances, the Belgian international, priced at 7.2 in FPL, could be worth a shout as a differential given his ownership of just 2%.

Newcastleโ€™s Moussa Sissoko sneaks onto the Watchlist by virtue of the Magpies favourable run-in (WBA, qpr, WHM). The French international returned from a two-match ban in the 3-0 defeat at Leicester, and with John Carverโ€™s men in desperate need of a win to ease their relegation worries, weโ€™re backing the 5.8-valued Sissoko to add to his three goals and trio of assists in the next few weeks.

With Man United failing to find the back of the net in their last three matches, Juan Mata sees his stock fall drastically in our latest refresh. The Spaniardโ€™s underlying stats over that period, with nine chances created and three shots from inside the box, mean he stays in our thoughts, but with two of Unitedโ€™s final three fixtures (cpl, ARS, hul) away from Old Trafford, the 8.5-rated midfielder may find himself sacrificed by many of his 9.7% ownership to find a place for the likes of Sanchez and Ramsey.

        Basically, Kane to Benteke, Fab to Ram, Haz to Sanchez.
        Plus one other just to facilitate the price.

                all for trying new things to see if the alternative is better, but yeah simple does have its benefits. love me a grandad shirt, who needs collars, love me a minamalist room, it's the people in the room who matter.

                where was i, oh yeah i think maybe the same format as currently but the community champion is the person with the highest score the gw before in their own team. it's simple and 100% merit based. people posting teams which aren't actually theirs or teams they haven't had for the whole season disqualified.

                  yeah I agree. was worth a try but hopefully we can all agree it was better before so either go back to the old way or try something new again.

                    We will definitely review it over the summer. I'll probably launch a hot topic or similar to gather views a bit more formally over the summer. Simplicity is a key issue that comes up.

                    But in terms of the quality of the picks they are far superior to last year. I see lots about how they are picked, but compared to last season hardly any criticism of the picks themselves. I think the community involvement has really helped that process. I'd hate to lose the quality of the picks this year, but completely understand the desire to simplify it. This is something we will definitely come back to.

                    do we all agree though? i dont even know where i stand on it, the voting seems a hassle but i like the end result of the 4 teams.

                    with regards to '2nd account gate' i'm not sure it should be an insta-disqualification for the person whose team was voted for as if someone is willing to set up a 2nd account to give an extra vote i certainly wouldnt put it past them to set up a new account to vote for the person they dont want to him, in the hope it gets them disqualified

                      I personally preferred the scout picks when it was just Mark's (or a combo of everyone choosing with one team).

                      As for the community vote I like the idea and it's fun to have a competition.

                      One thing Demi has said would be to make it so you can only have 1 entry per season which would mean more people get a go potentially - I like that idea.

    Bottomed.

    Hello people. Some advice with what to do wight his team would be much appreciated. Kind of caught in about twenty minds at the moment.

    Kasper, Ospina

    Terry, Skrtel, Mcshane, Smalling, Coloccini (I know)

    Haz, Fab, Sterling, Coutinho, Cambiasso

    Giroud, Kun, Vardy

    2ft, 1.3 itb

    Currently thinking about Sterling and Fab out for Sanchez and someone, but can't decide who. Also tempted to do Sterling and fab out for Ramsey and Silva. Thoughts?

    Best route here fellas?

    A)
    GW36: Sterling -> Ramsey
    GW37: Silva -> Sanchez
    GW38: TBC (0.4m to spend)

    B)
    GW36: Sterling & Cout -> Sanchez & Gomez (4 points)
    GW37: Silva -> Ramsey
    GW38: Kane -> Benteke (3.1m to spend if not)

    Was all set on A) but with the slight doubt over Ramsey and preferring Sanchez first anyway, I'm wondering if this, together with getting another DGWer in Gomez makes the 4 pointer worthwhile?

        I think I do also. Normally against hits, but i) getting Sanchez in this week, ii) getting an extra DGWer next week and iii) having cash for a decent upgrade in the final week (e.g.Benteke), i think that is worth a 4 pointer.

      Probably A for this week only (if Ramsey is fit). Expect blanks from both Henderson and Albrighton so you're relying on a Sanchez goal and Ramsey blank. While very possible, the odds are probably against that.

  23. Reacting to changed circumstances in FPL
    Ruth_NZ

    Changed Circumstances

    One of the things that can really help FPL managers is the ability to recognise changed circumstances and react to them early.

    For example, when Ozil and Giroud returned to the Arsenal team back around GW22 it was clear that Sanchez would not continue to be the player everything went through. His GW22 injury and the winter wildcard was a good opportunity to drop him. The circumstances in which he did so well during October-December had changed.

    At first this strategy was proven very wise for those that followed it. More recently, however, signs can be seen that Arsenal have now adjusted to a way of playing with Ozil, Giroud and Sanchez in the side that doesn't isolate Sanchez so much. Ramsey's return seems to have helped with this. The circumstances have changed again.

    Many managers like to imagine that the potential of a player is some kind of constant. But it isn't. It is variable based on a number of factors like the ones mentioned above. Benteke, fully recovered from injury and playing in a Sherwood team rather than a Lambert team is clearly a different proposition now. There are discernible reasons for his much-improved performance and therefore it can be more relied upon. Whereas sometimes a player performs well for a short period in terms of FPL points but there is little rationality to suggest it will continue - Murray being a recent example of this.

    Form (actual) and fixtures also come into this but fixtures, especially, can be misleading. Chelsea have always played with extra solidity against the top teams. Games against City, Arsenal, United are actually good fixtures for Chelsea defenders for that reason. And form (true playing form) doesn't always get reflected in FPL points.

    Anyhow, this all brings me to the changed circumstances of GW36:

    1. There are 3 GWs left;
    2. All transfers are now punts because there are less weeks left for luck to even out;
    3. Hits are correspondingly much more of a gamble because there is less time for a player to repay them.

    It could be argued that a well-timed hit or two early in the season can be very beneficial. It can help you adjust your team for a longer period, to benefit from price changes (building TV) and to react to injury problems. It can also save you from using your valuable wildcard. In other words the -4 is only temporary and the cost of the hit can be more than balanced by the long-term results of it.

    Now, however, that situation is reversed. I have seen people discussing taking hits to bring Benteke in, for example. But he only has 3 games left, one is Southampton (a) and in one (GW38) he may well not play a full 90 minutes in view of the Cup Final. If he doesn't repay the hit against W. Ham (h) this weekend he may conceivably never repay it.

    It is similar with the Arsenal DGW. I see people talking about this or that player being a "must" and others contemplating taking hits to remove Giroud and bring in an extra Arsenal midfielder. There are lots of posts discussing which are the "right" Arsenal players to have. But all of this is quite pointless.

    There is very little difference between the Arsenal attackers in terms of capability over a short term. Cazorla was all the rage a couple of months ago, despite his FPL returns being largely based on a run of penalties. A penalty or two in DGW and he could prove the one to have. Giroud was all the rage a few weeks ago after a run of goals. A brace in DGW and he could be the one to have. Sanchez has done better recently, so has Ramsey. But Ozil, who no-one mentions, was voted the PL Fans' Player of the Month for April. He's in great form too. Maybe he is the one to have.

    In the end it makes more sense to accept that all transfers now are punts to some degree. You can't be sure of getting them right and the long term is not there to help you. The one thing you can control is not taking unnecessary hits that there may not be the time to get repaid.

      Very interesting Ruth.

      The circumstances approach can be seen with teams fighting for survival vs teams that have nothing to play for and is one of the reasons why Leicester and Aston Villa are doing well.

      Ozil has been quite unlucky not to register some points in the last few games and if you look at his stats, it is likely that he will get some soon. He is a very good differential option for anyone chasing.

        Yep. What is interesting this season is that the relegation-threatened teams (Burnley excepted) are going on the attack. Sunderland could surprise people in DGW just the way Leicester have done recently. Especially if Sunderland get something this weekend at Everton.

      This is a good "30,000 foot perspective" post, Ruth. I definitely considered taking a hit this week to sorta "redirect" and get Sanchez ("fear of no-Sanchez"). However, I read through a few posts, including a reply from you, and came to the conclusion that while Sanchez may be the most attacking of the Arsenal mids, it was my fear of no-Sanchez that was driving my changed plans, but that more likely (and logically), it's pretty much a crapshoot about which excellent Arsenal mid will score the most points over such a short haul. So, I stuck with my budget and obtained my 3rd Arsenal player, as planned, and that was Ramsey. It would have required a hit for me to get Sanchez or even Ozil. That said, I will use my second free trade (no hit!) to grab Benteke as it seems his form is just too incredibly good to ignore. He is elite and playing at his elite level. Fortunately, a hit will not be required for me to get him. I could regret this if his playing time is curtailed due to the FA cup final. Thanks for the insights.

      I think a hit is justified if you captain Benteke which I think I will do. Benteke will be rested for GW38 only if they secure their stay and even if they beat Westham, it will be difficult to beat Soton away from home so the probability is higher that GW38 is the week to secure epl status for Villa. You'll want Benteke at home against Burnley at GW 38. You'll probably want to captain him too.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 7 months ago

        Captaincy obviously affects the calculation. But it makes it even more of a high-risk gamble actually. I wouldn't captain Benteke this weekend even if I had him, there are at least 3 players in my squad I'd prefer to put the armband on.

        Sometimes we can captain a player in order to justify a hit. But if you are that confident in Benteke then the hit may be worthwhile. Backing your own judgement is always the right thing to do.

        My take-aways:

        1. Hits are bigger gambles when there are only a few games in which the newly acquired player may yield returns (e.g. the end of the season).
        2. At the end of season, given that there are so few games remaining, all moves are punts.
        3. Arsenal has four strong mids who are all capable of big hauls, and it's pretty uncertain who the big producer will be over the short-term.
        4. Benteke may not yield big returns given that he has @ Southampton and FA cup final coming up.

            Those posts are very helpful and they totally offset the numerous "rate my team, choose A or B", tactical posts that, by nature (not judging anyone), dominate these boards.

      Great post, I agree with KTK_42_INTERISTA - I think if you were, for example bringing in an Arsenal player to captain him in the DGW the risk is less and a hit could be well worth it. But you should've had time to plan for bringing ARS players over the last few weeks without a hit.

      In a similar train of thought you could say taking a chance on a low ownership/captained player could have an even bigger impact in the last 3 GWs - if it pays off. Given that your rivals have only a couple of weeks to regain those points.

        Don't think the risk is any less if you're going to captain, it's just easier to justify.

          I think it's less as they're playing two games not one - an extra game to make up the -4

            Right, but isn't captaining a -4 punt the equivalent of doubling down in blackjack? It is really more of a cognitive dissonance thing that makes one more committed to the move, but still poses the same risk, and actually more so, as Ruth says. If the -4 hit combined with a captainship works, it's a double-success. But if it fails, it's a loss of four points AND a wasted precious captain decision.

              Yep. Blackjack double-down is a good way to describe it.

              If anything I think I am telling myself not to sweat about short-term outcomes. My team is as good as it is and how well it does over a 3-game period (which is all we have left) will owe quite a bit to the luck of the draw. Because luck is a bigger factor over 3 weeks than it is over 10 weeks.

                Man, that is a very zen attitude. It is the right one, yet so hard to sorta maintain. On the one hand, we look at our teams and examine the talent, form, fixtures, and if the outcomes are less than expected (especially if a player we do not own is hot and producing), it is really hard to stick to the plan and let the odds even out, as they often do over the span of several games.

              I see it as that player starting on -2 for each of the two games rather than -4 for one game, you're probably correct but it seems like less of a gamble to me.

              Don't you always double down on Blackjack??

      Excellent post, Ruth - this post and triggerlips one on "End Game" should both be mandatory reading before hitting the transfer button this week.

      I'd add that FPL mini-league / Overall Rank position is as much of a "changed circumstance" over the season as a managerial appointment or change in position for a midfielder - your tactics should vary accordingly.

      Hits early in the season are an "attacking" stratgey : they let you move up the ranking rapidly, with low risk as the template team wouldn't have settled in yet. Towards the end of the season, hits can be used as a defensive strategy - to cover high ownership players and defend your position in top 1k / 10k / ML. The assumption is that you've built a team with decent value to allow you to be in that 10-20% of managers who own all the top, explosive FPL assets.

      This is why I think that getting in Sanchez and Giroud, even if for a hit are pretty much mandatory options this/next week if you don't want to undo a whole season's worth of climbing the ranks. Of course there's a chance of double blanks, but that shouldn't discourage a hit. I brought in Sterling as part of a hit for DGW34 and can't understand what all the fuss about him blanking is about - I'm perfectly happy taking his two/three blanks. The hit was taken just to cover his ridiculously high ownership (80%+ with captains), and I'm counting on my other players to push me up the ranks. In the end, the DGW + follow up didn't affect non-WCers by all that much.

      tl;dr -
      If you're defending a lead, the 3 Arsenal conundrum is not really a conundrum. Take the hit if required, to get Alexis and Giroud - the third Arsenal player is anyone's guess but Ramsey/Bellerin (debuchy injured?) seem the favorites now.

        Yep. I don't tend to look at tactical reasons like that because I don't play that way. I just focus on trying to get as many points as possible. But this is my first FPL season and I don't play in any cash leagues. If I did, and was protecting a lead, I might take ownership more into account.

          It's also something that Simon March and those hoping to catch him have to take into account more towards the end of the season.

          Do you have ambitions to aim for the top next time? That does however require a combination of luck and skill.

        Great point about playing hits for defensive reasons - I've not been playing to match my ML rival but now there's only a few weeks remaining and I can pretty much guarantee he'll armband Sanchez for the double i think a hit is worthwhile to bring him in.

      Yea, we should not take unnecessary hits riding the DGW bandwagon.

      However, I think if you need to take a hit to take in a double player whom you are looking to captain (Sanchez for many), that hit is justified imo even in short term.

      Great point, however I feel there is another way to look at it. Sometimes people take hits to jump onto the latest inform player or for scenarios like dgw's, if for example you took a hit to get in Leicester players you are then stuck with them in your team for the long haul and would require extra transfers or even hits to get rid of them. With it being so late in the season I see it as more of an opportunity to take a punt on someone like Wickham because worst case scenario is he flops and you are stuck with him for just 1 last gw.

      Unless your mini league is extremely tight or you are trying to stay within a milestone such as top 1k this is as good a time as any to take a hit or a punt as some teams have nothing to play for and some have everything to play for now. Think Lukaku hat trick the other season!!!

      I had my wildcard the other week to set up for the upcoming dgw as well and saved a transfer this week to limit hits but I feel confident still taking a -4 hit to field 6 dgw players, they have an extra game to make up the hit and with just one game left after it you would hardly cripple your squad. I do agree with most of your points though, just providing an alternative view.

      Hmmm...some interesting thoughts.

      Having profited handsomely from the two previous dgwks with hits, I tend to disagree with your point about avoiding hits at this stage prior to a dgw. Spotting the key players is important though.

      Last season, I changed tack and started taking hits in the last 8 gwks of the season. My rank went from 150k to 72k during this time. Not spectacular but significant enough for me to pursue this tactic from the start of this season. As can be seen, some of my best weeks coincide with the weeks I took a hit so I don't necessarily agree about the need to avoid hits at this stage of the season or at any time in fact.

      A hit should never be a gamble though. If a player has good form and fixture, then go for it.

      I agree with the second part of your post. Hits at this time of the year are harder to make work.

      However, I disagree with your statement, "it was clear Sanchez would no longer be the player everything went through." You were proven right, but at the time it was just conjecture and I'm still not convinced that Sanchezs blip in form was anything other than an inevitable regression to the mean and maybe some physical/mental limitations from the injury. The return of Ozil and Giroud could also have something to do with It but I still don't buy the theory that it was obvious that their return would be detrimental to Sanchez.

        Fair enough. I think what was clear that Arsenal would now have other options in their play and would likely cease to be what had been, in effect, a 1-man team.. To me that said that Sanchez' potential would not be the same. I understand that other interpretations were possible.

        That's the thing with trying to respond to changed circumstances early. Sometimes you will get it right and be rewarded. Sometimes you will get it wrong and be punished. But I'd rather trust my judgement than fall back on the safety net of historic performance.

      Having failed in all of the DGWs so far I have come to the conclusion that a hit can be very worthwhile for the sake of getting an extra DGWer. Next week I will contemplate selling Kane and Henderson for two Sunderland assets -4pts and I going on the results of recent DGW's that could most certainly pay off. I would agree that its somewhat of a punt though however punts are not necessarily bad.

      One of the changed circumstances that managers here did see was the Pulis effect. A lot of teams went Foster/Myhill in the January wildcard and some even went the Brom defender as well.

      Very interesting post, thanks for putting in that much time. ๐Ÿ™‚

        Yes, that's a good example. I went with Foster/Myhill with winter wildcard too. But shifted to Schmeichel/Ospina with my main wildcard in GW34 so missed Myhill's recent heroics. Schmeichel has been doing great though, so nothing to complain about.

          If I had a main wildcard left I would have probably done the same. Running only Myhill now is a risk and both those keepers have been doing well. Despite the last GW madness you'll probably end up with more points from those two.

            I took a hit to get Sanchez back in for Fabregas this week, it saved me and saved my position in a league, while it is risky, now is not the time to play with long term thinking (IMO) because most leagues are tight, now it's about having the right 11 on the pitch that can maximise your points and outscore an opponent, if you have to take a hit to do it then it's now time to find your balls.

            You got 3 weeks to outscore an opponent, if you have to take a step back to take two steps forward then you have to go for it because there isn't the chance to play the long game anymore.

            Not it's about explosiveness.

    @All Genuine question:

    Why is it that when some posters get warned/disciplined/removed all reference to it is erased. Yet for others the posts are left visible?

    I understand the need for rules, regulations etc. but sometimes it all seems a little odd.

    Ultimately we are all here because we share the same passion/obsession. The very nature of communication via the medium of forums means that occasionally words/banter can be misconstrued and taken the wrong way. Some people are funny/sarcastic and inadvertently cause upset, others can be just plain rude:

    e.g. Go away and come back with a grav, or your not really a girl......

    We are all adults and (hopefully) possess a modicum of common sense. This forum can be a great place to visit, and participation seems to be on the up, we won't attract any more like minded souls as long as ''gravless wonder '' posts and petty little cliques are around.

    I'm rambling now but it's been really getting my goat the past few days.....

    I mean crikey look at the way the community has rallied recently to support it's members (Doosra, the loss of Absinthe to name but a two). This goes to show that we can pull in the same direction (and it's great when we do).

    I suppose what I'm trying to say is:

    Why can't we all get along and focus on the important things in life . Namely:

    Kane > Tekkers?
    Haz> Sanchez?
    Are SUN players worth it for the DGW?
    What do we do with our time in June/July?

    and just being bloody civil to each other.

    Cheers

      There is a danger of putting new members off. I remember the first day I ever visited the site 3 years ago, it was just before the season started, and the regulars on here were moving back a few posts to avoid gravless people and RMTs. At the time, I was one of the gravless newbies, and had to essentially justify coming onto the site at all, which isn't how it should be. I very nearly just closed the site and never returned, as it seemed that new contributors were unwanted.

      That said, I do see why people get agitated. I criticise a couple of people on here who post lots of questions (usually the same ones over and over) yet ignore all responses and have, literally, never answered anyone else's queries ever. New people on here should certainly be welcomed, but they must contribute if they are going to ask for help.

      I've also got into a couple of squabbles on here recently, but quickly realised that, regardless of right and wrong, the whole tone of the arguments was childish and damaging to the site. There must be a distinction between debate, which should be encouraged, and personal arguments.
