Our pre-Gameweek assessment arrives once again this Thursday lunchtime. Arsenal and Sunderland’s double, the battle for survival, Jose Mourinho’s rotation policy and Steven Gerrard’s final Anfield bow are amongst out topics this time around.

Ozil as a differential for the double…
Our final chance to scout the Gunners’ main men proved a bitter disappointment after Arsene Wenger’s side succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat against Swansea on Monday evening. With Olivier Giroud now failing to score in each of his last four, many are instead focusing on the Arsenal midfield for the double – indeed, Eden Hazard has been the most transferred out player in the Gameweek as we free up funds to facilitate the move for Arsene Wenger’s big hitters. Whilst Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey have persuaded plenty to investment, Mesut Ozil has been drafted in by just over 5,000 FPL managers this week. The 4%-owned German has created more chances over Arsenal’s last six than any team-mate and with four double-figure hauls in his last 11, could be the canniest option for those chasing down min-league leaders.

Jose’s rotation plans…
After making five changes to his starting line-up against Liverpool, the Blues boss laid bare his intentions to make a number of alterations for this weekend’s trip to West Brom. Whilst we can expect Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas to be afforded a rest, skipper John Terry has admitted he’s desperate to continue in the heart of defence as he looks to break his own goal scoring record for a single season. It remains to be seen whether Mourinho will resist making wholesale changes and instead field a more experienced backline in order to afford his side more balance and greater defensive stability against Tony Pulis’ outfit.

Villa’s chance to clinch their survival..
Tim Sherwood’s side roll up to St Mary’s looking for a win that would secure their top-flight safety for another season. With the Saints conceding twice in each of their last four, Villa could barely ask for a better chance of breaching Ronald Koeman’s backline, with Southampton struggling for resilience since Fraser Forster’s injury. Villa’s home clash with Burnley on the final day of the season looks tailor-made for Christian Benteke and the in-form Tom Cleverley to run riot but with an FA Cup final to consider, Sherwood will surely be going all out for a win this week in order to give him the option of rotating for Gameweek 38, thus ensuring his regulars remain injury-free for the Wembley showdown at the end of the month.

…and Sunderland’s…
At this point of the season, double Gameweeks can take on a new twist as the battle intensifies at both ends of the pitch. Subject to significant investment this week, Sunderland head into their home match against Leicester with their survival still in question but, if results go their way, Dick Advocaat’s side could be safe before 5pm on Saturday. Given that they have a midweek trip to Arsenal still to follow, the Black Cats’ new owners will be hoping that Nigel Pearson’s side prevent the Wearsiders grabbing a much-needed win in order to ensure they still have everything to play for at the Emirates on Wednesday.

Kane at home to the struggling Tigers…
After a single goal in six, can the Tottenham youngster return to form in his final home outing of the season? Kane still sits in a massive 48% of FPL sides and with Sunderland’s strikers failing to grab our attentions for the double, many are happy to hold as Hull make their way to the Lane. Two points adrift of safety, Steve Bruce’s side could be relegated this weekend depending on results and they cannot afford to play it safe – given that the visitors are likely to go for broke, then, Kane could well be set to benefit.

Gerrard’s final Anfield bow…
The Liverpool skipper is ticking over nicely ahead of his final home league appearance this weekend. Gerrard entertains Palace on the back of successive strikes against QPR and Chelsea and with the visitors managing a single clean sheet in 16 under Alan Pardew, the script almost looks written for him to go out in style. Given that Arsenal’s midfield have been the main subject of our attentions this week, the Reds skipper looks set to steal under the radar as a differential as he looks to hand Pardew’s men a fifth straight defeat.

Monk’s tactical set-up
In all likelihood, Garry Monk’s use of Gylfi Sigurdsson as a “false nine” against Arsenal was down to Bafetimbi Gomis’ lack of fitness after returning from a hamstring injury. The Swansea boss has shown his tactical acumen this season, however, switching between 4-2-3-1 and a midfield diamond, and the success of Monday’s formation at the Emirates may give him food for thought against tougher opposition. With a home clash against City up next, it’ll be interesting to see whether Sigurdsson continues as the most advanced central option or whether Gomis is handed a chance to start after netting the late winner against the Gunners.

Is it worth it doing Cazorla/Ramsey and Schlupp for Henderson and Skrtel for a hit? I am worried that Liverpool give Gerrard an Anfield farewell with an emphatic performance. Other move would be Hazard-> Sanchez/Caz/Rambo on a FT. Although I want to have Hazard for GW 38.

Ouch no. Gerrard gets farewell so you get Henderson.

No I already have Henderson. Wondering if it is wise to ship him out for a hit.

I'm confused, you think Liverpool will be emphatic so you're taking out 2 Liverpool players?

I am asking if my concern is valid. If I ship out, it is to get in another DGW arsenal player and keep Hazard at the same time.

So you don't think it will matter to Liverpool's assets FPL wise then. 1 more Arsenal mid is more worth it. Take a hit to get in Caz/Ramsey or do Hazard -> any Arsenal mid for free?

I'd probably do Henderson to Gomez, then look for a cheap midfield punt for GW38. If you have other ideas for GW38 (like Cisse), save the FT.

                yeah I have other ideas

can't help but think I'll need to lose at least 1 Arsenal attacker GW38 with a cup final on the horizon

Still can't decide between Myhill & Mignolet, or if I should move on Fab for a hit

    Myhill
VAN AANHOLT - BELLERIN - Terry
    GOMEZ - SANCHEZ - CAZORLA - Hazard - Fabregas
    Kane - Aguero

Mignolet - Vardy, Alderweireld, C Dawson

Considering Cambiasso -> Gomez for my FT this week, as i need some sort of differantial in my ML.
I am chasing 21 points, and think i need to take some small risks.

Would you bench Hazard for Gomez?

    Rest of team:
    Schmeichel - Davis
    Ivan - Bellerin - PVA - McShane - Moreno
    Hazard - Sanchez - Ramsey - Silva - Cambiasso
    Aguero - Vardy - Kane

Do you think i need to take some more risks given i have 21 points to catch up?
At te moment i think Silva is my best non DGW differantial. My rival will most likely captain Sanchez, and I'll do the same.

Well that sub will give you 5 for the week which is a healthy amount. It was more of a question of how many Gomez can really make you up? A goal and assist would be a big return on previous form. I wouldn't take any points hits. All is looking in place as you can get it. I say good luck to you.

I'd be happing with any returns from Gomez, as long as he outscores Hazard.
No hits this week, but i might be tempted to do so next week, if I'm still a fair bit behind.

Thanks for your opionion, and good luck to you!

Well just 1 pen over the 2 games can make a difference. GW38 is always a lottery. Put pressure on this week so he worries going into 38. 10-15 will have him trying to cover your players, then you have him! Cheers. GL!

        This could work 🙂

Only thing is, i was hoping that my rival would be stuck with 1p Hazard cameo, and i could gain a few points assuming that happens. Am i putting to much into the Hazard talk going on here?

          • 12 Years

If you need to gain on him, you need to take risks. I think you have more of a chance of gaining if you don't play Hazard, but also if you don't it could backfire

            • 13 Years
            10 years, 8 months ago

Well yeah, it could backfire, but i feel it's the reasonable amound of risk, given the gap (21p) i have to the leader.

I could also take a bigger risk, i.e. not captaining Sanchez, but there is still one more week after this.

Seems an okay option in a week where there's really 4/5 potential captain options

Depends if you think they will keep a cleanie in those two, you can always go Mert to cover. I have 1 def and 2 attack so i'd say Mert.

    A) Skrtel (Crystal Palace)
    B) Terry (West Brom)
    C) Kolarov (Swansea)

Or do I play all 4 and drop Fellaini (Arsenal) to the bench?

For everyone defending a catchable ML lead what's the plan?

    Block
Cover off all your rivals key differentials and get over the line anyway you can

    Go for the kill
Pick the team you think will get the most points and win in style (albeit with the risk of ending up with egg on your face)

    I'm undecided and defending a 47pt lead

I have a slightly bigger lead and didn't block.

I would have had to take out 2 players rival owns to get 1 I don't (Giroud) for a hit. In the end I went Koscielny and hope it holds out over 2 weeks

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 8 months ago

Koscielny is a really solid pick. He will probably outscore 2 of the 4 popular midfielders.

The advantage of an Arsenal defender is that if they get a clean sheet you have it. With a midfielder it's quite possible for every goal scored to involve other players. A defender is therefore a good safety play for someone leading.

There is a reason you have a 47 point lead and it isn't because you are blocking. Play your own game always and let those below you take the risks.

Where will Charlie Austin be next season? (IMO no way he stays at QPR)

    a) a lower top half side (e.g. Saints, Swansea)
    b) an upper bottom half side (e.g. West Ham, West Brom)
    c) a side that survives the drop (e.g. Villa if Benteke leaves)
    d) a newly promoted side

There's also the Liverpool/Lambert-esque option, but hopefully that proves it'd be a mistake.

Swansea seems like a great fit. Southampton less so with JRod around.

        agreed on Saints

Swansea could depend on whether they play 1 or 2 up top as I get the feeling they're likely to give Gomis a proper run. He could be a nice fit at WBA or Villa if either Berahino or Tekkers leaves

Yeah maybe Austin should learn from Lambert that he may better being a big fish in a slightly middling pond than a small fish in a very big pond
