This was no ordinary Fantasy Premier League (FPL) launch. The usual noise and bluster, the regular scramble for team IDs and early “Rate My Team” requests, was magnified by some far-reaching changes that gave us plenty to consider on the opening day.

While we’ve already presented some initial views on the three new “Chips”, the more subtle changes to the Bonus Point System (BPS) may have slipped under the radar.

For the uninitiated, the BPS system is the calculation used to govern the award of FPL bonus points – the points allocated to the “best” players in any given match.

The system uses a variety of Opta data which measure player actions on the pitch and allocates a score to each action – either positive or negative. These scores are then totalled with the top three ranked scores earning bonus points.

Today’s launch revealed some slight tweaks to this BPS scoring system which will have some impact on how the Bonus Points are allocated for the coming season.

We’ve already been running a Hot Topic on the matter throughout the afternoon but, for those who have missed this additional update, here’s the skinny…

BPS Decrease For Pass Completion
2 BPS points awarded for 70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 3)
4 BPS points awarded for 80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 6)
6 BPS points awarded for 90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes made) (instead of 9)

BPS Increase For Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI)
1 BPS point is now awarded for every 2 CBI (instead of every 3).

BPS Increase For Tackles (net)
2 BPS points awarded for every Successful Tackle (net) (instead of 1 BPS point).

BPS Increase for Saves
2 BPS Points awarded for every Save (instead of 1 BPS point).

First Impressions

We will delve into the potential impact of these changes in more detail via a Members article. However, immediately there are some obvious considerations served up.

For starters, goalkeepers will receive double the BPS rewards for the saves they make. This will have clear ramifications, making shot-stopping performances all the more likely to earn bonus recognition. In turn, this could reduce the Bonus Point appeal of defenders in sides that concede shots on target.

Undoubtedly, this will compound the clamour for cheaper goalkeeping options, with the likes of Costel Pantilimon and the custodians in the promoted sides boosted in our thinking.

Pantilmon may even have provided the catalyst for this change.

In Sunderland’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates in Gameweek 37, the Romanian put on a superb one-man display of defiance, making eight saves on the night. He failed to win a single Bonus Point.

Instead, the BPS favoured Arsenal’s defenders who, in truth, were more intent on bursting forward in desperate search of a winning goal than keeping Sunderland at bay.

Indeed, the reduction in BPS for pass completion may also have been considered as a result of this very match.

The likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker were promoted in the BPS that night, not least by their pass completion – that pair, along with Hector Bellerin, all earned nine BPS for passing. Pantilmon earned just eight BPS from his saves.

Arsenal’s defenders will certainly require some further examination in the light of these changes. Both Mertesacker and Koscielny easily break 30 passes per match and both earned 89% pass completion over the season: clearly they will take a BPS hit as a result of these changes.

While they will take the hit there, the centre-backs will at least benefit from the hike in BPS for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI).

Dominant centre-backs may now come to the fore once again, having spent a season somewhat in the shade of the raiding full-back in Bonus Point terms.

Full-backs will be somewhat boosted by the increase in BPS awarded for net Tackles Won but the suspicion is that this will not level out the CBI increase and will result in full-backs, particularly those who were also reliant on completed passes, drop below their centre-back team-mates in the BPS pecking order.

There are, of course, implications for attacking players. However, while the likes Yaya Toure and Cesc Fabregas have earned handsome BPS returns via their passing prowess, it’s fair to say that there are other major factors at play when calculating their match tallies: goals and assists will remain king.

Just hours after absorbing the BPS changes, our impression is that it is clearly defenders and, of course, goalkeepers, who will feel the real impact of these tweaks.

However, this is a subject that will be treated to far more conjecture and insight in the next few weeks, not least on these pages.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Totally see where you are coming from, but Mane did outscore most of the others last season and he has better fixtures to start off with. Considering a GW5 WC.

These chips are such a gimmick. I can imagine them having some kind of blue sky session with a whiteboard and post-it notes to come up with them.

You don't really hear the phrase much now, but FPL has jumped the shark with these chips. The game looks after itself, there's no need for stuff like this.

I don't hate them. A tad gimmicky, yes, but it does force us to alter the strategies that we have used in years past.
As Ryan has pointed out recently, FPL's purpose is to try and keep people interested for as long as possible. The changes should be seen in this light.

When they brought the transfer window wildcard in, I defended it for that reason. It keeps casuals involved for longer, which is good for the sponsors, etc.

I don't see how that is the case with these gimmicks. Take triple captain - that could potentially net a single player 100+ points in a gameweek. That can destroy a ML, not keep the interest up.

The wildcard rule change can alter a strategy, but the chips...I'd like to see the argument there.

I actually love the new changes..bench boost will be useful if u are playing catching up. Lets say if u are 50pts behind in the last gw..having either triple captain/bench boost would give u a chance to catch up.

Anyway its still more fun than purely making transfers every week. For those who treat the game more seriously..these chips should change your strategies and u should adapt accordingly

If it was something like your highest scoring sub always comes on first, then I think that could change your strategy (might encourage you to put more money on the bench).

But the chips are one-offs, the potential gains in most cases not going to be enough to make you change your strategy around them. As they only affect one week, it is going to be more down to luck than skill or strategy.

But with 3m players there will be times when the chips have a massive impact - my triple captain misses a penalty, yours scores a hattrick. That doesn't improve the game in my opinion.

I love the new changes. And that's exactly the argument. Take triple captain - that could potentially net a single player 100+ points in a gameweek.

It's HIGHLY unlikely that a single player will score 100+ points in a gameweek. I believe the record is 32 points by Rooney in 2009/10 (32 x 3 = 96). If you've picked the right player that week, good on you. You only have one chance at it. Those who use it well will be rewarded.

They all add an extra dimension of fun to the game. They can make or break your season, but that's a good thing I think. Alternatively, the triple captain can score 4 points (x3 = 12).

The All Out Attack could also backfire, with your bench all keeping clean sheets.

Also if the aim was to keep casulas closer and more interested they have failed. I know casuals in my leagues who love to log on on a Friday, do no reading up, make changes and play. They love the game and the rivalry but dont invest our kind of time. They will not understand the impilcations of these coins.

We on the other hand will maximize thier use, get input on here and 'should' get further and further ahead of them point wise

      1. Ruth_NZ

I don't see much in the 'chips' to be honest and as you say they just favour in the know managers. One of them (2-5-3) is pretty useless anyway, I'm not sure I will ever even use it apart from maybe in a defender injury crisis. Using them well will require even more in-depth planning and that doesn't favour more casual players.

As for the wildcard change, I hate it. It virtually forces an early wildcard, GW19 is too early for the Jan transfer window so no point saving it till then, the only realistic use of it is to help build TV. The old system gave a strategic choice - early wildcard or late DGW wildcard. Now you can have both.

The player prices also surprise me, specially the GKs. Only Hazard, Costa, Sanchez, Aguero and Silva are what I'd consider as protectively priced, meaning you can't realistically have more than 2 or 3 of them. There are a few snafus of other players being overvalued (Ward-Prowse £6m when he's not yet a nailed starter, Murray £6m when he's a big lump that will never be Palaces's 1st choice striker, Ritchie £6m on the basis of Championship performance and hype) but in the main the other prices are kind, in some cases very kind.

All in all it will take quite some study and planning to get the best out of the new situation. That's why all the RMT stuff seems inane to me. What is a good team to start with totally depends on when you plan to wildcard for example. Are you picking a team to last 4, 8, 12 or 16 weeks? Anyway I'm staying out of all the RMT stuff, it drives me nuts. I have hours of thinking to do before I even begin to form up more than a tentative idea of my GW1 team and even then a lot will depend on what transpires in the next 4 weeks.

The one thing I am pleased about (and the first thing I looked at) is that there are plenty of worthwhile options for a 4.5 midfielder, which is important because I will need 2 of them most likely. 🙂

        Good luck all anyway.

I don't mind the new "cards". But I don't really appreciate the wildcard rule changes, where there is one wilcard in each half of the season. Most managers will play one wc early in order to built team value, and the other before a dgw in the second half of the season (along with the bench boost card). In the end, there will be much less diversity of strategy around the wildcards.

Is there a point in planning out too far? With everyone forced to use a wc before January, the arguments for an early wildcard look that much more compelling. Plan for the first 4 gws, but not beyond.

It's making planning long term rotations seeming somewhat pointless to me right now. By then you can wc for team value, and know who's nailed/on set pieces, and transfer window closed, and some will have returned to fitness, etc. Seems like a lot of advantages for an early wc indeed.

Really loading up on Arsenal, are we?
I have no idea who will start between Giroud and Walcott. After that, the midfield is a minefield. Ramsey/Ozil/Caz/Wilshere... to say nothing of Sanchez. I certainly hope preseason will give some clues.

    Myhill - 4.0
    Ivanovic - Cresswell - Cedric - Coates - Francis
    Fab - Mane - Payet - Ritchie - Aarons
    Costa - Rooney - Lukaku

What do you think? Two ways into Kun (downgrade either Ivanovic or Lukaku)

Whats so funny? World class signing of Milner and Firminho to join a gelling squad. Ings up and coming England regular. All we need is a world class defender.

Milner and Firming world class? Not on this planet anyway. The gelling squad you refer to performed appallingly, surely you noticed?

Having a route to Aguero is worrying

    Schemichel/ Hamer
    Kosc/ Cedric/ O’Shea/ Mings/ 4.5
    Mata/ Hazard/ Toure/ Punch/4.5
    COSTA/ ROONEY/Sakho

    If Aguero starting

    Schemichel/ Hamer
    Kosc/ Cedric/ O’Shea/ Mings/ 4.0
    Mata/ Hazard/ Toure/ Punch/4.5
    AGUERO/ GIROUD/Sakho

Think i could have asked this more succinctly. Anyway, any thought welcome

Be mindful of Carzola. He plays as a deep lying playmaker. Ozil has taken his corner duties. Aguero may not start in GW1.

Well Cazorla could well be changed to Mata or even Toure I suppose. I can also drop Aguero down and keep the funds for his return.
