After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Pantilimon, Hamer
    Azpilicueta, Koscielny, Lescott, Cedric, Morgan
    Hazard, Walcott, Henderson, Cabaye, Anya
    Aguero, Berahino, Sakho

Any glaring issues in this draft?

Aguero will not play in GW1. Get Rooney/Costa in there.
Rest of it is basically your preference, but I'd downgrade Cedric and Cabaye, and improve one of Berahino/Sakho.

So I've ditched Koscielny and Morgan to get Mertesacker and Cedric - keeping in mind that I can easily change Mert to an MUN/LiV/MCI defender later on and Cedric to a WBA/WHU defender if needs be.

Right thing to do. Both Mert and Kos are nailed-on, but anyway the new system suggests that he will get a lot fewer bonuses.

Atleast players like Koscielny, Williams or Morgan who are more tackle-friendly. Players like Mertesacker benefitted earlier due to too many sidewise passes, but that factor is not so important anymore.

Guys, how can you find 0.5 from this? I'd love to add Janmaat instead of Coloccini.

    Here we go

    Courtois - 4.0

    Lescott - Cedric - Olsson - Coloccini - Matthews

    Hazard - Ramsey - Cabaye - Ritchie - Anya

    Rooney - Sakho - Aguero

Looks like I might be able to get 0.5 from my GK pairing, though a Chelsea player at the back is something I am looking for this season.

Quite like the look of this, if Austin goes to Palace. I think he'd be priced at 8.0

    Butland - Ruddy

    Azpilicueta - Mertesacker - Francis - Morgan - O'Shea (3 way rotation)

    Hazard - Yaya - Ozil - Mata - Anya

    Costa - Austin* - Wilson

I would be surprised, I'm guessing you're a fan so probably know better than me, but I really think players being in the news/big money transfer has an impact on FPL selections.

Courtois is definitely the better keeper, and will have more points at the end of the season.

Copa America, lack of a break, and his tendency to get injured if rushed back (think he may have picked up a knock in the Copa America?) I'm 50/50 on starting with him, but if I do it will likely mean no Hazard.

Just did it, 310.29 with 57.6 GW1. That's my current side with Hazard and no Aguero, it will obviously be different by the time the season starts.

They don't have high hopes for Deeney - he's behind Albrighton for 4 of the 6!

Deeney has very poor fixtures over the first six, plus no Prem experience.

Albrighton is proven ...all depends on starts though.

        Sounds about right.

Good first six score though - maybe indicates that you ought to consider another third striker - Wilson/Sakho perhaps?

I'll certainly be tinkering before GW1, no doubt my final team will have a projected 270. Deeney is certainly not guaranteed, need to assess options in that bracket (currently have Ritchie so avoiding Wilson).

So far this is the latest

        Ruddy/Butland

        Ivan Francis Morgan (Cedric O'shea)
        Haz Milner Mata Ramsey (Wanyama)
        Costa Giroud Wilson

Fits with my criteria of minimising risks, and loading up on top 4 sides (ARS, MAN, MCI, CHE) with some sure bets from Europa level sides (SOU, LIV, SPURS)

I have nine from Champs Lg and top end Europa level teams.

Yep. Sakho and Pelle are other strong options there. Sakho for Giroud allows Costa to Aguero at some point.

Currently I think Milner will play further forward of the two...also Milner has indicated that BR wants him to play a central attacking role. But pre season will help me alot with this decision. If it turns out Hendo is hogging all set pieces, they look like drawing penalties and Henderson is playing further forward then I'll get him. Same price though so its a wait a see approach.

I think Ritchie, Sakho, Milner, Henderson, Wilson are all much of a muchness in terms of pts potential. Pre season will help with all of those I think.

Pelle is meh, Giroud is about 0.5 too much for my tastes, Gomis' fixtures aren't great and JRod is on the way back from injury

Aguero is the main draw there. But will he start Gwk1? What score will he get against Che? That's the first two gameweeks gone.

Silva is good but at 8.5 there are other good options. Having Silva dents elsewhere.

I can get to 331.87 over the first 6 with

          Courtois - Rudd
          Ivanovic - Clyne - Yoshida - Morgan - O'Shea
          Hazard - Silva - Mane - Henderson - Chadli
          Kane - Vardy - Deeney

          54.99 for GW1 Hazard (C)

      324.91 with a 55.75 start, 100M exactly.

I've never made it past GW4 without using my WC, so I might as well go all in on the first 6 GWs and see what happens.

Mathematically, what's the highest scoring possible team for the first six weeks and what score does it achieve?

304 i think it was, but im honestly not that bothered as my team will likely be quite different come gwk 6 and also I dont put too much faith in RMT, particularly at this point in the season.

Just did mine - 309.99 over first six. Tried taking Haz out for Fabs and it knocked it down to 302.87....

I got 325,82 after 5 minutes trying to maximize the score. However, I don't think the RMT tool is accurate over 6 GWs, as you are going to make a lot of changes to the team. Also, the tool was consistenly underestimating form last season, which burned me hard during the former stages of the season.

      Getting 54.36 for GW1 and a total of 310.33 for GW 1-6.

I think I could increase it a little with a bit of tweaking but I'm happy with it for now, especially as not 1 of my GK's or DEF's cost more than £4.5m.

      57.53 for GW1

322.62 for first 6 and 0.5 in the bank

Sounds quite a bit better than my team looks!!!

How many goals would you project Silva to score over the course of the season?

Did not realise how thin Man City's midfield options were. Does this make Nasri appealing for the start of the season?

If they go 2 up front, it could be Silva and Navas wide. If Sterling signs, that would be even worse for Nasri.

      Very risky option, imo.

      -----------------Yaya----------------Fernandinho
      --Sterling----------------Silva-------------------------Nasri/Navas
      ----------------------------Bony(Aguero)

      OR

      -----------------Yaya------------------Fernadinho
      --Silva----------------------------------------------------------Sterling
      -----------------Bony------------------Dzeko(Aguero)

Aguero as soon as he's ready that is.

*** So, I don't think he is anywhere near nailed on. Also, Pogba/de Bruyne might arrive and then you never know.

6 Players on the books is as thin as it gets although 2 of them will feature in plenty of teams.

Gonna miss the first three GW's possibly due to Mrs selfish Wakey booking our hols for August...so nailedoniness is the name of the game for me

    Coutois (rubbish)

Kompany Koscielny Smalling (4.0 4.0..fairly sure we'll get at least one soon)

    Cabaye Hazard Ramsey Henderson (Wanyama)

    Gomis Aguero Sakho

Any volounteers to look after it whilst I'm away if I can't get a connection ?..in particular the Aguero lark.

I fancy City and United to do a bit better...In fact City picked it up at the back end of last season....

Brill...One way or another i'll find out when I get there and send you a message...if I need you to do it then feel free to do as you think right...but i'll probably start with something similar to the above.
