After assessing the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we now focus our attentions further up the park.

Prior to our assessment, it’s worth noting the changes to the BPS scoring system this term. The decrease to the BPS for pass completion will hit those players who ply their trade for dominant teams, though in truth, that won’t hurt many budget attacking options hard – the likes of Nemanja Matic and Gareth Barry will be the chief protagonists in the cut-price bracket. There’s also the improved BPS changes for successful tackles, which will certainly benefit Matic, given that he made more (100) than any player in the Premier League last season.

We start off, then, with a look at what’s on offer at 5.0 and under as Fantasy managers scour the market for this year’s George Boyd or Matty Phillips…

Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin is, at the very least, a reliable starter at 4.5. Having been named in the first XI in 19 of the final 20 league fixtures, his defensive qualities afforded the Gunners a better overall balance last term, though given he failed to produce any attacking returns, you’ll be getting three-point returns at best here.

Villa’s new signing Idrissa Gueye has been priced at just 5.0 and boasts a relatively decent scoring record in 2014/15, arriving on the back of four goals and a pair of assists for Lille last term. Charles N’Zogbia and Scott Sinclair also come in at 5.0 but will need to force their way into the starting XI to have any chance of coming into consideration, with Jack Grealish expected to nail down one of the wide roles. Ashley Westwood sets you back 4.5 but with a single assist last term, he offers little prospect of attacking returns. With Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six, though, Tim Sherwood’s side could be ones to monitor.

As mentioned in previous articles, Villa rotate home/away with Midlands neighbours West Brom over the 38 Gameweeks. Baggies skipper Darren Fletcher and Claudio Yacob (4.5 apiece) both started 15 of Tony Pulis’ 18 matches in charge last term and will at least offer security of starts in the centre of the park. Fletcher scored once after arriving at the Hawthorns, whilst James Morrison (5.0), who also started all but three of the fixtures under the new manager, produced two goals and an assist last term. New boy James McClean (5.0) could attract investment if Pulis affords the industrious winger a run of starts on the left flank – he chalked up six goals and seven assists in the previous campaign but faces competition from Callum McManaman (5.0).

Harry Arter could be an option for Championship winners Bournemouth – priced at just 5.0, he bagged nine goals and three assists last time out. Former Norwich man Andrew Surman looks the likeliest starter at 4.5 for the Cherries; despite sitting in the double-pivot, he managed three goals and six assists in 2014/15. Bournemouth have the kindest opening schedule over the first six Gameweeks, according to our season ticker – three strong home encounters (AVL, LEI, SUN) are complemented by a trip to Norwich.

Eddie Howe’s side rotate with fellow new boys Watford over the 38 Gameweeks, though the Hornets are currently undergoing a restructuring programme under Quique Sanchez Flores and it remains to be seen just how many of last season’s regulars will retain a starting role. The likes of Almen Abdi (5.0) racked up nine goals and two assists playing in “the hole”, while Ikechi Anya (4.5) proved to be a fine facilitator on the left flank, amassing seven assists. Etienne Capoue (5.0) and Valon Behrami (4.5) have already been drafted in and look the likely starters in the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1, though the pair offer little in the way of attacking returns.

As mentioned above, Nemanja Matic looks set to be the chief beneficiary of the new BPS change for successful tackles. Coming in at just 5.0, he’s certainly very budget-friendly but his role in the Chelsea double-pivot produced just a goal and three assists last season – given we can only pick three players per team, few will be willing to turn to the Serbian as a viable option in the centre of the park.

Palace pair Mile Jedinak and James McArthur will set you back 5.0 apiece. The arrival of Yohan Cabaye places question marks over Alan Pardew’s plans in the centre of the park – should Cabaye be fielded in a deep-lying role, one of the duo look poised to miss out if the Eagles boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 set-up.

Everton’s Gareth Barry comes in at just 4.5 and started all but five of last season’s fixtures. Again, though, there’s uncertainty over Roberto Martinez’ intentions with Tom Cleverley adding an extra option in central midfield, whilst Steven Pienaar, Aiden McGeady and Leon Osman look far from certain starters at 5.0.

Claudio Ranieri’s arrival at Leicester may prove a source of frustration for Fantasy managers. Given that “The Tinkerman” is renowned for heavy rotation, the jury is very much out on Leicester’s potential regulars for the season ahead. Marc Albrighton staked a claim for inclusion with some strong displays at the end of last season – the 5.0-priced winger delivered two goals and assists in the Foxes’ concluding quintet of fixtures. The likes of Danny Drinkwater, Dean Hammond and Andy King are all 4.5 but we need to assess pre-season line-ups before considering any of them viable.

Liverpool’s Jordon Ibe is available at just 5.0 and was utilised as a right wing-back on a number of occasions during the latter part of 2014/15. With Brendan Rodgers keen to restructure, though, it remains to be seen whether the youngster can nail down a starting berth – right now, his acquisition looks too risky to justify.

Newcastle’s 5.0-priced Rolando Aarons will be hoping for a breakout season under new manager Steve McClaren. The fleet-footed 19-year-old scored and assisted in his second cameo last term, before succumbing to a hamstring injury that restricted him to two further appearances. Aarons has looked sharp in the close season, netting for the England U20s, though the arrival of new boy Georginio Wijnaldum could well restrict his pitch time.

Norwich ‘s Jonny Howson is available for 5.0 and produced nine goals and six assists from the centre of the park in the Championship last term. Wes Hoolahan (5.0) bagged five goals and ten assists, takes the majority of Norwich’s penalties and shares dead-ball duties with Nathan Redmond, though he’s less secure a starter – ten of his 39 appearances came off the bench. Graham Dorrans made 18 appearances (13 starts, five as a sub) after arriving at Carrow Road midway thorough last season. The former West Brom man – priced at 5.0 – bagged three goals and an assist and his top-flight experience could be key to the Canaries’ survival bid. Alex Tettey is cheaper at 4.5 but with 13 yellows to his name last year, may be best avoided.

With Morgan Schneiderlin now gone, Victor Wanyama looks a decent squad-filler at a price of just 4.5. The Kenyan struck three times for Southampton last time around, though his role in the double-pivot suggests he may struggle to replicate that goal-getting form, given he mustered just 28 attempts over the course of the previous campaign. Steven Davis (5.0) started 32 times in 2014/15 and although he managed just two assists, still produced 49 key passes for the Saints. Ronald Koeman’s side square up to three of last term’s top seven in the opening 13 rounds of fixtures.

Similarly, Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason are very budget-friendly options at 4.5 and 5.0 respectively. The duo offer little in the way of attacking output, though – Bentaleb chipped in with a pair of assists in 2014/15, whilst central midfield partner Mason managed a goal and four assists.

Sunderland’s spot-kick taker Jordi Gomez (5.0) had started to find his form under new manager Dick Advocaat before his previous season was ended by injury and could be worth considering if he can nail down a starting berth again. Lee Cattermole comes in at 4.5, though it’s fair to say he is more likely to produce yellow cards than attacking returns. The Black Cats have some very kind opening fixtures and face just three of last season’s top seven in the first 14 Gameweeks.

West Ham new boy Pedro Obiang is available for a cut-priced 5.0 – although he’s noted more for his tough tackling, he notched three times for Sampdoria in Serie A last term. The Hammers have four decent home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks to heighten their initial appeal.

Rooney or Costa for the first three gameweeks? This seems to be my big decision. Costa looks good GW1 but Rooney could be captain material the following two weeks

I am thinking Rooney. I have been considering going Costa to Kane tonight. It should make it a little easier to get in Aguero or someone if I have a little cash in the bank at the start.

Yeah I may go down that route but Im hoping to WC in GW4 so seems a waste to have cash in the bank. This is my stand in for Aguero so I was looking at the fixtures going I dont mind playing Rooney over Aguero this week and such

The more i look at the fixtures the more I think they're both essential. If United don't buy another striker I think Rooney will be the man this season, with all that quality behind him. Costa ... well he's exactly the same if his body holds out. Can you get both, or does it mess with everything else too much?

Getting both would likely mean losing Hazard. Could become a Haz over COsta thing too I suppose

Great minds. I just did a bit of tinkering and did just that. First few weeks only so could be a good bet. Basically it will be

            Fab and Rooney/Costa

            or

            Hazard and Benteke

I was thinking this but then Haz is on pens and proved himself a beter captaincy choice than Costa last year (bar those first few weeks when COsta lit it up) due to Costa getting carded and not getting bonus points. But then again Chelsea were grinding out results by then too.

Either Costa or Hazard could be the one, no way to tell. I suppose it comes down to the rest of your squad - if you've got a forward you really want then have Hazard and vice versa. Opportunity costs rather than a straight who is best question.

Ikechi Anya (27 starts, 8 sub apps. 7 assists) – the Scotland international can play in a variety of roles, including as an advanced midfielder, but was predominantly used as a wing-back by Jokanovic. His ability to play both sides meant he was less prone to rotation than others, and with his pace and trickery, can create chances from either flank.

                Looks good for 4.5

I don't think there are any, most are priced as such because they will only ever return 2-3 points.

Fletcher and Wanyama have the better of the histories in the PL, and there are some punts from the promoted clubs which we won't know much about until GW1.

Im happy to get 4.5 who plays for his 1 to 3 points every week with a really low ownership. I recall some of the highly owned 4.5s being shipped out en mass and you end up with a 4.2 player. Ugly.

    - Janmaat got forward plenty of times
    - Lascelles and Williamson didn't look great at the back, particularly the former who gave away a penalty and a careless foul on the edge of the box.
    - Sissoko played very forward and got a goal to his name, assisted by Cisse who was okay at times.
    - Gouffran and De Jong didn't have much impact on the game imo, but the latter had a good chance in the second half before being subbed.
    - Colback was a key player to the Magpies, dropping deep to help out the defence and link the play up the the attackers. Was on corners.

    Newcastle team: http://i.imgur.com/Vw8Z13y.png
    - A lot more lively and attack-minded to try and get a late equaliser.
    - Aarons made a good few wings along the left wing.
    - Armstrong was the furthest forward of the two strikers, with Perez dropping quite deep at times to try and win the ball back. Armstrong looked a handful at times, great prospect for an 18 year old.
    - Obertan had a couple of good runs but nothing major.
    - Left sided corners were shared with Ferguson and Armstrong. Right sided corners were taken by Bigirimana.

Aarons made runs, not wings. Though I would imagine he was hungry after all that running.

My latest and hopefully improved effort. Rather inexperienced at the game. Hoping to be a little more patient this year rather than early WC or taking heaps of hits.

    Cech, Hennessey
    Ivanovic, Darmian, Huth, Bassong, Richards
    Ozil, Mane, Henderson, Cabaye, Fletcher
    Rooney, Lukaku, Sakho

5.0 itb for Lukaku > Kun

I think I would rather pay the top price for surety of starts with Cech and Ivan, plus goal threat for the latter. The rest of the defs are a bit up in the air. United cover could go well early.
Arsenal mid cover essential IMO. Mane is a bit of a punt but Soton good early fixtures. Not sure I have the right 4.5 mid but that can be worked on later or switched should a bandwagon occur.
Lukaku due to the opening fixture. Kun by GW4. Sakho can become a lower bandwagon if need be

Anything glaringly terrible or obvious misses? I mean Chelsea mid cover would be nice but I can't settle the team with Hazard. Finding too much unbalance with him in, prepared to be in the minority at this stage.

Second Half Match Report of Club Atlas v Newcastle

First thing is that the pitch was tiny. No space at all. Lots of stoppages for fouls. No real flow to the game and only one real chance on target which was a Cisse header from a corner. De Jong fluffed a good chance that was cut back from Sissoko. All the subs came on together around 75 mins.

Newcastle lined up in what looked to me a 4-4-1-1

GK- Darlow. Had nothing to do at all
RB- Janmaat. Looked good going forward. Linked up well with Sissoko. FPL potential for attacking points.
LB- Haidara. Looked good going forward at the beginning of the half but lacked support from Gouffran who was in front of him. Could make the LB spot his own but will always have Dummet breathing behind him
CBs- Williamson and Lascells. If any of these 2 are in the starting 11 then God help us. Both give no confidence at all. Williamson reminds me of a noob playing Haxball

RM- Sissoko. Linked up well with Janmaat. Looks a decent prospect for a few goals and assists
LM- Gouffran. I think they left him in the dressing room. A sideways player who did nothing at all. No FPL pedigree
CM- Colback. Probably Newcastle's best player tonight. Tenacious and always looking to drive forward
CM- Anita. Too lightweight and brings nothing to the team. No FPL prospect. Winijldum should take his place. Wini and Colbak will be interesting

CAM- De Jong. Was really looking forward to see him play but was off the pace. Lacked match sharpness
ST- Cisse. Looked lively and was making runs but little support from De Jong, Gouffran and Anita

    Subs;
RB- Bigirimana. Nothing to note. May be loaned out
LB- Shane Ferguson. Should stick to playing for the U15s. No chance of overtaking Haidara or Dummet
Ayoze and Aarons- Looked sharp but lack of space on the pitch limited impact
Armstrong- Put a lot of effort in. Will be loaned out

Summary; Defence is shocking. Need a new CB desperately. Janmaat looks good for attacking points. Too early to comment on attack

Unless I get Fabregas + Ozil instead of Hazard + Ritchie. Adds balance and means I can downgrade one of those two to get Kun. Only issue is it means Rooney is my main captaincy option

fwiw I went from Haz + Ritchie to Fab + Wally 😉

Yep captaincy option will be an issue there. For that reason you need a Costa (or even Wally) for an option.

      I, and i stress the I , would-

Looking good mate. Ogbonna is questionable, I think there are other better 5.0's ala Williams, Cedric although it depends on your rotation. Also, there are no playing 4.0's yet so maybe do Ogbonna -> 4.5 and 4.0 -> 4.5

I do the Graveyard Shift H2H league.

It got a bit out of control last season with over 100 people in it, but I'm really keen to start up a DZ H2H league with fewer numbers filled with regular posters. I'm just not sure how/who to invite.

It is tough. The way I see it a H2H league would be best with the same number of teams as there are in the league so everyone plays twice. How do you narrow it down though? As there are many more than that here.

would highly appreciate some feedback lads:

    Ruddy/Butland
    Williams/Morgan/Azpi/Merte/Lescott
    Haz/Rambo/Hendo/Punch/Wanyama
    Costa/Pelle/Sakho

2.0 ITB to bring in Kun later or upgrade elsewhere

    THANKS

      Hi SEB!

      - Little too much at the back for me
      - Hendo needs to be a 8.5 or at least Punch to a 7
      - Understand the saving money bit but for an extra .5 somewhere Pelle is Rooney

Not bad overall. Good to see you again

With downgrading Hazard to Fabregas, I can do either one. Which one is better?

    a) Yaya Ozil -> Sterling Walcott
    Azpi -> Ivan
    Extra 0.5m ITB

    b) Yaya Ozil -> Sterling Walcott.
Wanyama -> Ritchie. Rotate Ritchie and Sakho

    c) Upgrades not worth it, stick with Hazard

Azpi > Ivan effectively an attacking midfielder with CS chances.

Ok ready for my first RMT

    GK: Leicester Square (i.e. x2)
DEF: Clyne Ivan Kos O'Shea (4.0 Saylor due to low ownership)
MID: Silva Ozil Hendo Mata (4.5 Anya due to low ownership - this year's Boyd?)
    STR: Costa Benteke Sakho

Looks great ... no Fab or Hazard is a risk, but could pay off with a very solid midfield regardless.

It's a good point, was storming home last season.

I think that people are tying up Arsenal midfields but he's definitely become a differential. If Arsenal buy another striker then he's under the cloud, again!

Hmmm ... you are right. It was straight after Christmas he went a little nuts and then died off toward the end.

He's one of those enigmas for me, every time i bring him in he goes quiet, and I missed some big hauls last year!
