It’s time for the final article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this evening, After looking over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders, Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders, Premium Midfielders, Budget Forwards and Mid-Price Forwards, we delve into the big-money frontmen for the season ahead.

Given he only made 27 appearances last season, Olivier Giroud still enjoyed a pretty strong campaign, scoring 14 goals and providing three assists for Arsenal. The France international also finished sixth among all forwards for goal conversion (20%) and scored every 139.6 minutes – on both counts, this was better than any of his previous seasons for the north London club.

Giroud’s prospects for the campaign will largely depend on whether he can stave off the increasing threat of Theo Walcott for the lone striker role. The latter’s hat-trick against West Brom and goal in the FA Cup final certainly strengthened his claim for the central berth and bearing in mind he’s classified as a midfielder, it’s obvious that Walcott would earn major interest if he can wrestle the role away from Giroud.

Certainly, Alexis Sanchez’ absence for the start of the season should allow Giroud to begin up front initially, with Walcott likely to be utilised on the left, but there’s no doubt his place is under increased threat – when the Chilean returns, Arsene Wenger’s use of Walcott will be key to how we asses Arsenal’s main attackers. If Giroud can continue as the main forward, a cost of 9.0 isn’t too pricey, but considering that Sanchez and the cheaper Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil bettered his points per appearance last season, many may choose to overlook him regardless.

After scoring 11 goals in 12 appearances under Tim Sherwood during the final months of the 2014/15 campaign, Christian Benteke has been handed a 8.5 price tag for the season ahead. The Belgian’s imminent transfer to Liverpool should see him nailed on until Daniel Sturridge’s eventual return from injury hands Brendan Rodgers a dilemma, though whether he’ll be quite so prolific with a less direct style of play remains to be seen in some Fantasy managers’ eyes. There’s also the matter of spot-kicks to consider – if he’s handed them ahead of Jordan Henderson, many will view the Henderson/James Milner midfield dilemma in a different light. Although Liverpool’s first five away fixtures (sto, ars, mun, eve, tot) aren’t the most enticing, Benteke will have four very kind opening Anfield matches (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) to persuade us of his potential. He’s yet to taste any pre-season action, though, and will need to build up his match sharpness to nail down a starting berth from the off.

According to reports, Benteke’s departure could well see Emmanuel Adebayor reunite with Tim Sherwood at Villa Park. The Togo international racked up 11 goals and six assists in 20 appearances under Sherwood in 2013/14 and, at just 6.0, could be one to monitor given that Villa have Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six.

Diego Costa brought a fair share of joy and despair in equal measure to Fantasy managers last season thanks to his goals and regular concerns over the health of his hamstrings. In that sense, the summer break should have given the striker time to heal properly, and having managed a goal conversion rate of 26.3% in his first season at Chelsea, the highest among all forwards, there is no doubting his potential as a Fantasy asset.

Costa looks very fairly priced at 11.0, with the only obvious downside the signing of Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from Monaco. While the Colombian striker is unlikely to steal many starts from Costa, he could be used as an impact substitute and eat into the Spaniard’s pitch time if Jose Mourinho is looking to protect Costa in the latter stages of matches. When being considered for the captain’s armband, Costa could also do with improving his bonus point tally, picking up only 18 last term, despite scoring 20 times. With Eden Hazard just 0.5 more expensive, though, some may feel the Belgian’s spot-kicks and consistency of starts (38 to Costa’s 24) give him the edge over the Spain international, who missed four matches due to suspension in 2014/15.

Liverpool’s only current forward in the premium price bracket is Daniel Sturridge. Hip and thigh injuries limited the England international to just seven starts in 2014/15, and after undergoing more surgery towards the tail end of last term, it’s hoped that he could be back “hopefully at some point early in the season”. A price tag of 10.5 in FPL looks fairly hefty given those concerns and with Benteke on his way, Brendan Rodgers will feel no need to rush Sturridge back. There’s no doubt he can be Fantasy gold on his day but bearing in mind how last season panned out, Sturridge may need to put together a run of starts before we risk spending a transfer on his services.

Following his most prolific season in English football, 26-goal Sergio Aguero finds himself as the most expensive player in FPL this time around, valued at 13.0. The former Atletico Madrid hitman led all forwards for shots from inside the box (117) despite only making 33 appearances, and still managed an impressive goal conversion rate of 17.6%. Manuel Pellegrini has yet to make it clear when Aguero will join up with his City team-mates after Argentina went all the way to the Copa America final, but there is a chance he could miss the Gameweek 1 trip to West Brom. Should such a situation arise, many FPL owners will likely hatch a plan to bring in Aguero as soon as he returns to action, given his phenomenal record since joining City in 2011, scoring 78 goals in 120 Premier League appearances.

Wilfried Bony found it difficult to break into City’s starting XI following his January move from Swansea, starting only twice, and with Pellegrini likely to switch between 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems, a lack of regular starts could curb his Fantasy appeal, in much the same way Edin Dzeko has been a risk/reward pick in recent seasons. Unless Aguero picks up a serious injury, Bony, despite a reasonable 8.5 price tag, may struggle to feature on our radars this season. If he manages to nail down a berth alongside the Argentine, though, we may well need to reassess Aguero’s value, given that he’s far more prolific when fielded as a lone frontman.

With Robin van Persie and Falcao no longer at Old Trafford, and Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin brought in to shore up the midfield, the outlook for Wayne Rooneys’ Fantasy prospects this season appear very bright. The skipper looks set to lead the line in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation and with Louis van Gaal admitting last season that Rooney, as his captain, is a sure starter, he may well prove worth the 10.5 outlay. After starting in central midfield a number of times, Rooney managed just 132 points – a far cry from scores of 224, 230 and 190 points in the last six seasons. With the likes of Juan Mata and Memphis Depay at 8.5, though, there are enticing alternatives at Old Trafford – the Spaniard is still in pole position for spot-kicks, whilst new boy Depay scored more direct free-kicks than any player in Europe’s top five leagues last year and will surely snatch a share of dead-ball duties from Rooney.

After something of a “Roy of the Rovers” season, serving up 21 goals and seven assists, Harry Kane now finds himself among the premium options after starting at just 5.0 last year. The Tottenham forward will set us back 9.5 in FPL this season, although he has only scored twice in his last 12 appearances for club and country. That has led to some fears over the heavy workload Kane has had over the past 12 months, with his importance to Spurs meaning he is unlikely to be afforded much rest in the coming campaign. Amongst forwards with over 1000 minutes last year, he sat third for frequency of attempts (24.1) and with penalty duties in the locker, there could still be plenty of upside in selecting Kane in our three-man front lines, despite that hefty price hike.

Kane’s season opener at United may curb early enthusiasm, although memories of his performance against Chelsea last season offers a warning that we should not overlook his potential, regardless of fixture. Following that, Spurs are treated to a smooth passage into the campaign and White Hart Lane clashes with Stoke, Everton and Palace over the next five could see Kane emerge as a top target once again.

With our analysis of the player list now complete, we will revisit all these options ahead of Gameweek One when we compile our Watchlist selection, offering a view on our initial squad recommendations across all four positions.

Just seen this. Arsenal seem keen for a striker. Giroud v Dzeko would be an interesting tussle for that starting role.

"According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are looking at alternatives to Karim Benzema should the French international opt to stay with Real Madrid.

It’s believed the Gunners plotting a £30m offer to lure Borussia Dortmund star Aubaeyang to the Emirates.

Arsenal are also weighing up an move for Manchester City outcast Dzeko, who with the arrival of Wilfried Bony, will find first-team opportunities at a premium.

Dzeko, also a target for Roma, would cost his suitors £17m."

Dzeko an awful fit for Arsenal I think. He would represent a downgrade from Giroud in that team from my view.

Different style alright, though I think a better striker. You'll never know how he'l fit in thought. Walcott and Gru very different as well. Allows them different options and more importantly decent back up if one striker was to be injured

I think Dzeko is a better out and out striker than Giroud without question, but in that Arsenal team with what they try to do, I'd rather Giroud over Dzeko every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Gru was massively over played two years ago and burnt out. Sanchez was at risk of it last year. A bit of depth and reliability might be good for them competing in Champions League and cups etc.

Theoretically they have the depth in Walcott, though. I emphasize the word theoretically in that sentence, though 🙂

      hey badger.

can't see any of this happening. wenger will wait for an opportunity to snag benzema or do nothing at all.

dzeko is a downgrade from giroud (in terms of team fit). aubameyang seems redundant with the presence of other speedy forwards in the team like alexis, walcott, and welbeck.

Seems most likely given Wengers philosophy and previous dealings in the transfer market. They seem over reliant on Gru and Sanchez though - Wally always injured. A new striker for the champions league and what not would be very useful.

Arsenal do lack a world-class striker however, none of these targets are an upgrade to what we have.
I'll take Giroud and Walcott over Dzeko and Aubaeyang.
They are looking for World-Class Strikers.
      Not an outcast.

GK: Great rotation, quite pricey though
DEF: Very nice, love the BOU/WHU rotation
MID: Looks strong, although I'm not a fan of Ki and wouldn't want to play him every week
FWD: All look like good picks. May be an issue squeezing Kun in when he's needed.

Overall: Very good team. If it was my team I'd downgrade Ivan/Hazard to get a better 4th mid.

    Two questions:

    1. Yaya+Walcott or Sterling+Ozil? Reasons would be appreciated.
    2. Costa+Benteke for GW 1 and then -4 hit for GW 2 to get Aguero and Kane or Aguero+Benteke for GW 1 and then one free transfer for Benteke->Kane? Reasons (once again) would be appreciated.

Cheers! I would love some answers, this is the biggest dilemma I'm facing right now.

      1) Sterling & Ozil - Walcott not nailed on yet, Yaya more defensive, Sterling will be more attacking

      2) Costa & Benteke then shift them, makes sense considering their fixtures and we don't know enough about Aguero's fitness yet. This wil likely change so don't get too attached to a team without Aguero just yet.

Walcott still not nailed? I was thinking with his recent goal and all that stuff about 15-20 goals he's been assured of a starting role...plus I heard Ramsey was playing CM with Cazorla? What do you think?

I read that article and I wouldnt read too much into the 15-20 goal thing. Walcott said himself that he didnt have a goal in mind,, just that a striker should be looking to get that many. Aslo, he didnt say Prem goal either

I reckon he will start the season andWalcott being Walcott, he could cement a spot for himself if he continues to bang in goals. But the threat is always there, as it is for every other Arsenal mid

So worth the risk and take him and Yaya, or just play it safe with Sterling and Ozil? I feel the former is more explosive, but the latter is much more assured.

Since the ticker for defense only takes into account clean sheets and previous performance, I have been trying to put some values in based on how strong I feel that the clubs are strong home or away.

However, when I later check the ticker for my custom values, there is always something wrong that turn up, like Arsenal away to Palace as a grey colour for example. Someone has a sample set that I can put in to check up? I am guessing that way, if I tinker with someone else's numbers a bit, I will be getting a more relevant set of numbers rather that from scratch by myself.

We'd be set with KDB. Playing a 4-2-3-1 with Sterling, Silva, and KDB behind Aguero would be deadly. All of them can play anywhere in those three wing/central positions, and all that movement would give defenders an absolute headache...and supplying the premier league's best striker too! I think City should break the bank for him, no point dallying around with 40m bids when they value him at around 50+

Exactly. City need to go for him, it could literally change the early momentum in the title race. That potential offense is easily the best in the EPL, second being maybe Arsenal or United.

Plus it would be a pretty amusing jab at Mourinho and the lads if he performs well against Chelsea in GW 2 and throughout the campaign. 🙂

Pretty sure he grabbed an assist against Hull in his debut for Chelsea...no clue why Mourinho didn't like him. Probably the workrate if anything, but that's a bad way to measure players if you ask me.

    benteke to liverpool.

    tottenham to bid for berahino.

west ham have bid for mirallas (spurs want him too).

I also think that united will definitely go in for a big name striker. can't see them going into the new season with only rooney-wilson-hernandez up top.

still a lot of transfers to be done. wouldn't bother too much with the tinkering until august tbh. loads of options will present themselves in the next 2-3 weeks.

looking at a 5.5 defender to go with ivan, then planning on 3 4.5s

Who would you pick out of Darmian, Cresswell or Mert?

i like Cresswell, based on him being proven, takes some set pieces? more with downing gone i assume and also a good crosser of the ball, also hammers having 4 juicy home fixtures in the first 7

Darmians an unproven quantity, but surely wont take long to adapt, he will get more clean sheets, will pick up the odd assist and is playing for a better team

Mert wil start as first choice, scores the occasional goal, with cech in goal we should get more clean sheets and is also captain.

    thoughts guys?

at that price I would go with mert (he's definitely 1st choice but I can see gabriel getting games here and there) or clyne/skrtel.

I don't trust darmian's prospects at the moment.

          just a gut feeling.

actually read your piece earlier on darmian - I do agree with most of your points but van gaal's backline rotations scare me.

gives valencia a new contract and played blind at CB during the last preseason match.

Darmian by a distance for me among those choices. If you are comfortable rotating a 5.5, though, I'd like Skrtel best of all.

He may get a couple of games early doors but Darmian is just a class above for me. I think he's a very good player and will be nailed sooner rather than later and would risk going in with him as a start every week defender than Mert.

I'd rather not spend a transfer on defense and withstand the possible odd game he gets rested for in the opening 8ish gameweeks before I see him establishing himself firmly as their fullback and rely on whoever you have on the bench for those games than have to waste a valuable transfer on a defender. I always tend to prepare assuming the WC does not exist, personally, and use it only when everything goes pear shaped.

Thats the plan or keep the guys banging in goals and ditch someone else 😆

Depends what your overall plan is I suppose. Im using a mid to fund Aguero so a punt on Mane/Walcott early looks good. If I was looking to keep them for longer I would probably go A but even still I think I would want Walcott while he's playing and downgrade to Ozil later.

Not yet and probably won't happen for another week or so.

Not sure there will be a nailed on 4.5 at Stoke and Darmian could be eased in.

I think Depay could well start in the early rounds at least but there is a risk he gets eased in as well. Pelle is a bold call considering he was terrible for most of last season

I am a Spurs fan though try not to let that affect me so I have selected no Spurs either 😉

None of the arsenal leap out
        Walcott not nailed
        Ramsey role not clear
        Ozil not direct enough
        Giroud eat donkey
        Sanchez likely not to start
Mert is an option though bps system would have hit him last year.

Just throwing an idea out there, SJ long time buddy, maybe you could give some insight.

With how well Arsenal played vs Everton in the Asia Trophy Final, is it possible they go without Coq in the starting XI and play Santi and Ramsey in the double pivot?

    - - - - - - - - -Cech - - - - - - -
    Bellerin - Mert - Kos - Gibbs
    - - - - Santi - Ramsey - - - -
    Walcott - - - Ozil - - -Alexis
    - - - - - - - - -Gru - - - - - - -

Just trying to figure out in my head if Walcott is worth it from the off. He will 100% start GW1 with Alexis out, but trying to figure out who drops out of the starting XI when he is back for GW2.

One of Wally, Ramsey, or Gru I suspect.

Anyone have any insight on this, or am I overanalyzing it?

I would like to se Wilshere and Ramsey play together in the double pivot. Cazorla for me is really a #10 and I think it weakens Arsenal quite a bit. I have a feeling if Arsenal don't worry about a defensive minded CM then Mertesacker could potentially lose his spot to Gabriel who is a lot quicker.

Santi is fine in there since we keep so much possession. He keeps us ticking over.

I think if one of Ramsey or Wilshere can put in more defensive work it may be an option going forward.

Just speculation I guess, but if Coq starts then 2 of the attackers I mentioned above drop out.

I have a feeling Coq won't start. Arteta is back as well and I would have thought he'd be ahead of Coq? I do have a feeling that Arsenal will not worry too much about a defensive minded CM and just do the possession thing as you say. For this to work though I do think Mertesacker will need to be dropped.

Mert is actually a very good and under-rated passer, I do agree that he lacks pace, but it's often irrelevant if Arsenal lose the ball in the attacking third, as they have ample time to get men behind the ball before a quick counter attack breaks out.

Coq is part of the reason why Arsenal finished the year off on a nice run beating City at home, Liverpool and drawing Chelsea., FA Cup etc etc.

They need a defensive midfielder, can't have both Ramsey and WIlshere bombing forward all the time. That's what got them in trouble at the beginning of the season. Think Wenger learned his lesson. At least I hope.

Coq will start. Arteta hasn't played in months.

You could be right. Just trying to find ways for Arsenal to have all their big names playing. Wilshere, Ramsey, Cazorla, Walcott, Ozil and Sanchez should all be playing week in and week out. Then they will need a striker as well to battle it out with Giroud.

I think against weaker opposition Arsenal will play with Cazorla and Ramsey in the double pivot but when playing stronger opposition I think Coquelin will start break up attacks and win tackles.

That is definitely an option. If you notice that when Wilshere comes in as a sub, its normally Ramsey who drops as a defensive midfielder.

In my opinion, its more likely that Giroud gets dropped with Alexis and Ramsey on the flanks. Just like they played in the FA Cup final when Wally started and Gru came off the bench.

      ----Caz---Coq-------
      Ramsey--Ozil--Alexis
      ------Walcott------

By the way, I don't think I can resist the temptation of not starting with Walcott and hope that he plays well enough to retain a starting role. Fingers crossed.

      hey bud.

been thinking about this as well. santi has now become our deep-lying playmaker (and he's quite good at it).

can see ramsey-wilsh-cazorla against weaker teams with coquelin against the bigger clubs. ozil as wide playmaker while alexis is out.

seems like a minefield right now - but I'm bullish on walcott for the first 3-4 gameweeks. ended last season with a bang, healthy, and signed a new contract.

I don't think he'll displace giroud up top but will play alongside him.

Why not? They benched Gru in the FA Cup final, see my comment above.

Arsenal play a 433 when Walcott plays. When you look at average position maps Walcott is often more advanced than Giroud but on the right side of the field.

I'm an avid reader of heat maps myself and I always view the average positions of players each week and in general Walcott plays very high on the right hand side. Obviously if he gets named as a striker instead of Giroud that would be different.

That's the thing who will Walcott replace?

                Ozil? No chance
                Alexis? No chance
                Ramsey? Perhaps but Unlikely
Giroud? Best candidate, like Wenger has shown already.

Doubt we will see both Gru and Walcott on the field at the same time, except GW1 when Alexis is not there.

Agreed but as fantasy owners we are more concerned over who is on the pitch rather than the formation they start with or may end up with within the context of the game.

Just going off what Wenger has shown us up to this point.

theo wide right, giroud up top (while alexis is out at least).

giroud is an essential cog to the way we play, plus wenger trusts him.

IMO, starting theo against villa was simply a move to appease theo (at the time walcott was making noises in the media about not getting enough games). or it could've been tactical of course.

Champ will be telling you yes but I don't believe it until I see it. I don't think Pelle rotates depending on form really, he rotates just to rotate and rest players it seems. Zabaleta is 100 times better than Sagna yet Sagna still gets the odd game. For that reason I can't see Kolarov staring every BPL game

With Baines carrying an injury he could start at home to WAT and he seems to be on a lot of set pieces. Could be a short term steal for 4.5m, especially for those planning an early WC.

In the long-term, yes. Baines seems very injury prone so he could be a decent option. Wouldn't start with him though, transfer waiting to happen once Baines returns and the fixtures aren't all that good anyway apart from GW1
