James Milner nets again as Liverpool chalk up a third straight win. Watford’s Matej Vydra and West Brom forward Brown Ideye also score for the second successive match, whilst Cameron Jerome misses out through injury as Norwich fall to defeat.

Adelaide United 0 Liverpool 2

Rodgers opted for a 4-3-3 set-up for the Reds’ impressive win over the Australian outfit, with central striker Divock Origi flanked by Jordon Ibe and Adam Lallana. Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and James Milner were stationed in midfield, while the back five comprised of Simon Mignolet, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez.

Ibe, a 5.0 midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was the stand-out performer on show, delivering the cross for James Milner’s opener, before Danny Ings recorded his debut goal for the club.

Milner has now netted in two consecutive matches while deployed in a central midfield berth, strengthening his claim to be selected ahead of the identically priced Henderson (7.0). Joe Gomez also put on another impressive display as the 18-year-old continued to stake a claim for a starting role following his move from Charlton; Gomez is yet to be added to the FPL roster but is likely to be priced at 4.5 on his inclusion.

As for Ibe, Rodgers favours the London-born starlet in a wide role but didn’t rule out the possibility of fielding him as a number 10:

“I’ve played him in the No.10 [role] – I’ve had a little look at him in there and I think he could maybe play that role as well, but I think he is a natural winger that likes to be on the outside. He’s happy to be in the duel and likes to set up the one v one. His best positions will be on the sides, for sure.”

SC Paderborn 07 0 Watford 2

The Hornets capped off their tour of Germany with a well-fought victory, besting second-tier outfit Paderborn in a tempestuous affair. Matej Vydra scored for the second successive match after latching onto a through ball from Troy Deeney, while Odion Ighalo continued his run of scoring in every warm-up tie by netting his sixth goal in four encounters. Ighalo (5.0) – who’s priced below Deeney (5.5) – is certainly enhancing his viability as a budget third striker. Intriguingly, Ighalo has been linked with a move to Villa as Tim Sherwood looks for a new centre-forward in light of Christian Benteke’s imminent departure.

Quique Sanchez Flores slightly tweaked his tactics this time around, according to the local press. Having started with a 4-2-3-1 in previous matches, he moved to a 4-1-3-2 set-up. Giederius Arlauskis and Allan Nyom were handed debuts in defence alongside Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Jose Holebas. Etienne Capoue sat in front of the back-four, whilst Vydra joined Troy Deeney up front, with Almen Abdi, Valon Behrami and Ben Watson stationed behind. Flores made six changes over the course of the second half and allowed Ighalo – who had been featured in attacking midfield in every previous match over the close-season – to replace Vydra alongside Deeney in the front two this time.

Richmond Kickers 1 West Bromwich Albion 2

The Baggies left it late to triumph over their Virginia-based opponents, with Brown Ideye heading home one minute from time following a Stephane Sessegnon cross to claim his second goal in as many matches. James McClean bagged the West Midlanders’ first of the afternoon, unleashing a 25-yard dipping strike after cutting in from the right wing.

Chris Brunt started at left-back, enabling McClean to operate further forward in a 4-4-2 set-up. Liam O’Neill, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson joined the former in defence, while Darren Fletcher, Claudio Yacob and Callum McManaman lined up with the latter in midfield. Saido Berahino and Victor Anichebe were partnered up top for the first period.

Jonas Olsson is now an injury doubt after he limped off five minutes before the final whistle. Joleon Lescot and Craig Dawson, meanwhile, were rested as a precaution and are expected to face Swindon Town on July 25.

Maccabi Haifa 1 Norwich City 0

The Canaries fell to their first defeat of the summer, having easily dispatched of three lower-league English sides in the past ten days. Nathan Redmond made his first appearance since returning from international duty with the England U21s. Sebastien Bassong paired up with Ryan Bennett in central defence, with Elliot Bennett at right-back and, significantly, Bradley Johnson at left-back. Gary O’Neil, Graham Dorrans and Jonny Howson joined Redmond in midfield, with Tony Andreu supporting Gary Hooper in attack.

Johnson’s shift to the defence will be a mild concern given that, at 5.5 in the FPL, he is considered a strong budget midfield option, having struck 15 goals in the Canaries’ promotion season. On the flipside, Andreu has caught the eye in pre-season and is being given opportunities in an attacking role. Once compared to Cesc Fabregas in style, Andreu is available as a 4.5 midfielder. Elsewhere for the Canaries, Cameron Jerome missed out after sustaining a foot injury against Cambridge on Friday evening. The striker, who has scored five goals so far this summer, now has a protective cast on his foot as a precautionary measure.

A reminder that all these results, along with Scout Notes on formations and form players is being captured on our dedicated page right here.

People starting with no Aguero, are you keeping money in the bank? If I start with Cedric, I have 1m ITB and can get Aguero with 2 transfers. I can get Koscielny, but then Aguero will likely require 3 transfers (or a WC).

Worth getting Koscielny and worrying about Aguero later?

i think best play is to spend all the money but then downgrade to the cheaper players that are moving up in value during GW1-3, leaving ITB for Kun in GW4.

a hit or 2 early doors is fine if the team value is on the rise

I think we're a bit of a state at the moment, and I actually think we'll struggle. If Stones or McCarthy go I think we're genuine relegation contenders.

We have 2 centre backs in the squad, Stones and Jagielka. Jagielka is 33 in August. We have 2 keepers, the 36 year old Tim Howard, and the dreadful Joel Robles. If McCarthy stays, he will play every game. I believe that, for Cleverley to sign, he must have been given 1st team assurances. There is a good chance Besic will be overlooked, leaving a midfield of McCarthy and Cleverley, neither of whom are defensive midfielders.

On top of that, the man organising that set up is Martinez, possibly the most defensively inept manager in the league. I am not a fan of Martinez at all, I think he inherited a very good Moyes side and was able to add a bit of flair. Now that the core he inherited is ageing/gone, I expect us to leak goals.

Romeu showed glimpses of quality in his time at Chelsea, but so far as I can tell he's not really set things alight whilst on loan. Bit of a gamble, but has the potential to be good and seems to be the kind of player you need if Cambiasso doesn't re-sign.

Ake is a player who doesn't seem to know his best position (I certainly don't). Versatile I guess as he can play across the back 4 or as a defensive midfielder, but doesn't excel in any position. Really don't think he will make the grade.

Ake younger with potential. He was a CB but is too small and so has also played at FB but seems best playing the Fabregas position. Romeu had a great half a season under AVB but then has faded and struggled with injuries although had a decent season on loan last year in the Bundesliga

I don't like it sorry KOL, I wouldn't want to be playing 2 of those 4.5s every week. I don't expect CS from Newcastle, and the others are likely to only get them in easy fixtures. If Gabriel plays a game, you're stuck with 3 of the other 4.

He probably will but he probably doesn't need to. Ake is a fine young LB who has shown up very well when he has played 1st team football.

There may be rotation for Azpilicueta but Jose will start the season with his first choice back 4 and will stick with it at least until CL football begins. No rotation fears, really.

The interesting thing will be what he does with Falcao, however...

        Do explain.

          10 years, 4 months ago

You only apply the meaninglessness of the all season the point difference to the defenders, while our big ass defenders, particularly Chelsea ones, are probably the most permanent assets in our teams. I only ever transfer player like that out on a wildcard, or if he gets injured/suspended.

That 40 points was also the difference between Henderson and Sanchez. Meaningless? And that's 4.0 to invest elsewhere. Last season it would have been 5.0-5.5 at times. That's the difference between having Aguero and Ings (and even at the 4.0, it's the difference between Aguero and Giroud).

          1. President John F. Keninnsie
            • 12 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

I used that as an example because I constantly see people saying it on here when comparing those two. Do I see people comparing Henderson and Sanchez in the same way? No. Also, no one could've predicted Henderson's strong season, whereas the difference between Ivan and Azpi is a lot easier to predict. But nice work using hindsight in an argument.

One more thing - "I only ever transfer player like that out on a wildcard, or if he gets injured/suspended". My post wasn't directed at you, I couldn't care less about what you do with your transfers, but just because you do one thing doesn't mean the other hundreds of thousands of serious players do the same.

            1. Camp No No
              • 12 Years
              10 years, 4 months ago

You don't have to use hindsight. People would expect Hendy to score this season. It's still a 4m difference in price. Which is much more than 1m. Why doesn't the meaninglessness of the all season points apply to this one? Or you can have somebody we were more sure of already for last season, say Cazorla. It's still a 2.5m price difference to Sanchez, and about the same points difference. What can you do with the extra 2.5? Well, for starters, make up for the point difference by having Ivan instead of Azpi. Then you still have 1.5 more. Hey, how about upgrading that 5.0m Kermorgant to Sakho? Done!

Rather than replying by what people supposedly are doing or what they are comparing somewhere, try to reply to the actual point: why would the value be important and the point difference meaningless in defenders only?

And, as to your other point, if players transfer out their top defenders easily, maybe that's the problem? Patience pays.

      2. Coldplay
        • 13 Years

I think it's all about what you can do with the extra 1.0. If Luis leaves and Azpi is nailed on, I think it's worth getting Azpi ahead of Ivan and using that cash to upgrade elsewhere.

Lol. The myth that Ivan always does well in the first few weeks is absolute nonsense. It means nothing. It's more down to the fact that Chelsea have previously had easy fixtures to start off the season. This season is different. Thanks for your insightful, thought-provoking comment though.

The bottom line, Innsie, is that both Ivan and Azpi are priced 0.5 lower that I expected. Both are a bit of a bargain at that level. I'd like Ivan but I'll probably have Azpi + 1.0 for exactly the reasons you have described.

Slightly off-topic but maybe with your BP knowledge you could help me with another one? Koscielny or Bellerin + 0.5? Bearing in mind that Wenger says Bellerin starts the season as 1st choice right back. Is Koscielny's BP potential worth the difference?

It is NOT a long shot, I have been telling people this but they won't listen even though I know the club very well and am a seasoned Mourinho watcher. 😕

I don't say it will happen in every game but I think it very likely that Chelsea will line up 4-1-3-2 in some games, especially against teams that come to Stamford Bridge with the intention of "parking the bus". Two deep midfielders are not needed in such games.

Jose believes he can get Falcao back close to his AM form, at which time he was generally considered the best striker in the world and also paired excellently well with Costa. Well, he's not going to do that by benching Falcao all the time - Falcao needs to feel like an important part of the team rather than a bit part player which is how he was treated at United. 4-1-3-2 in some games is an obvious solution.

      ----- Falcao Costa -----
      Eden Fabregas Willian
      ----------- Matic -----------

Mourinho on Falcao: “When a player is injured or has bad consequences of a big injury there is sometimes nothing you can do. We made ourselves sure that was not the case with Falcao because if that was the case he would not be with us.

He didn’t perform [at United] for many reasons. Some players don’t perform with Chelsea, [then] they go to other clubs and they perform. This can happen. So we know that Falcao is in good conditions related to the surgery he had before he went to Man United [and] we believe that he can [show his true level] with us." [Observer]
