Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

            Tekkers, Ritchie works for me

Leaves me cash spare to swap Ward or Henessey out, or keep it banked towards Kun.

They won't be as solid as last year but Koeman knows how to set up a defense so they'll probably still be a fine option, especially with those fixtures at the beginning.

      Nope.

But - part of what has made them so great has been the predictability of their clean sheets - I think they got something like 8/10 CS at home to bottom half teams, and only conceded twice. A large part of that was down to their ability to dominate possession and completely control games against weaker opposition at St Marys.

They might not have players with the same raw defensive qualities as Clyne, Alderweireld and Schneiderlin, but they will keep playing the same way, and I think it will be great news for fantasy managers - they may concede more goals this season, but they'll still get clean sheets when we expect them to.

I owned a Swansea defender virtually all of last season (Naylor then Naughton) until Naughton got injured

I may go Ritchie and Sakho as it allows me to

            a) upgrade Ward to a 5.0 (Cedric, Jenks, Williams)
b| switch Henessey to a 4,5 if needed
            c) still keep 2.0 banked for a straight Costa to Aguero move

Still are really. Those possession-based teams tend to get most of their CS against weaker opposition. Arsenal and Liverpool also follow that model, to an extent.

Teams who park the bus though, like Chelsea in 13/14 or West Brom under Pulis, may get lots of clean sheets, but they're hard to predict - they quite often concede more against teams who coax them into attacking, whilst they keep a CS more often when playing for 0-0.

Hmm. 6 at home, 7 away.

But, against the bottom eight they got 9 CS in 16, which is a pretty impressive number.

I wrote a few years ago about value for money. Scribe of the time Andy was quick to tell me I was talking cr@p. But I'm not, am I. Limited budget, you need points per million. Based on this year's values and last year's scoring, the best return of points per mill is:

    Fabianski 30.2, Mignolet 29.8
    Jagielka 25.8, Clyne 25.8, Ivano 25.6, Bertrand 25.5, Lescott 25.4
    Ki SY 23.4, Brunt 23.3, Hendo 23.1, Chadli 22.9, Puncheon 21.3
    Berahino 22.8, Ulloa 21.7, Kane 20.1.

Even with Kane's inflated price this season, he still looks good value. Now to find this season's value new players.

Good post. I don't think you're talking crap.

How many of those players would you have in your team this seaosn? Last season I never had Chadli at a good time. In fact every time I did have him, and started him he didn't feature!!! Then I would take him out and the next week he would score 12 pts :|.

Is he nailed on for Spurs this season? Also quite tempted by Lescott with Pulis in charge especially.

You need points per million I agree but you need to optimise this for a £100m starting budget. You also need at least one player you can captain regularly.

Also if you're playing a game where the players in our team are static and not dynamic such as the Sun game or UFPL this is a more useful concept, however, FPL is a fluid beast and one that can't be so simply broken down to ppm.

      That midfield.

I'm all for pricing and points against price but it's just too narrow in scope.
I price players up for what will represent value before the seasons pricing then assess against that.

It allows me to have the likes of a Yaya rate very highly whereas straight points per mil (without last year's price and mins also accounted for) you will end up like you have with cheapies only in the mid or just all the good players in the 5.5-7 range

My 2cents but overall think you're far from mad. Value is the most important thing in any budget or bankroll!

Having right players at the right time is also a factor. What about those who only played parts of the season like ozil and Walcott? Stats would be skewed. I agree you can use aspects of this to get a couple of these players in but considering it won't take into account how many mins they played last season and also can't factor in new signings, it's a case of using the info to help you with one or two decision without using it to pick your team.

Add to that Clyne at Liverpool, Bertrand without Clyne and new soton defence, ulloa game time etc etc.

At the risk of being last season all over again. Ashley Young is 6m and has started pre-season with a bang again. Plus this time he was also the best player for the last 10 games of the old season as well.

Van Gaal is an incredibly loyal coach to people playing well and I think Young will start the first match and the left wing spot is his to lose. Playing Depay in the number 10 role in both games already is telling me that the front three is Young, Rooney, Mata until further notice.

    6m people...

Am I the only one who doesn't plan tactically for GW's? I just buy players I like.

For example I have Kun in my team and I don't care if 'City's season doesn't start until GW4'.

So many combo's could be good Gaz. Would prefer Silva to Sterling , or any other early downgrade.

    1. Ziegler1988

No way is he nailed. Ozil, Cazorla, and Ramsey are all more secure

      1. HamezMace
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

But he's the only striker in the team? Sanogo, Welbeck or Akpom won't start ahead of him

You think Walcott starts ahead of him this season?

Cazorla and Ramsey are pretty nailed on, but will be much deeper than...Ozil, Sanchez, Walcott, Ox, and Giroud, and what about Wilshere?

            1. Ziegler1988
              • 11 Years
              10 years, 5 months ago

Maybe, depends how they both start the season before Sanchez comes back. Wenger will want to play Walcott as much as possible until he signs a new contract. Wilshere will be an every other match starter imo

Sanogo's on loan at Ajax. I think we'll sign a striker

Walcott can also play up front, so can Sanchez.

Hence Giroud isn't nailed. And for the record - Sanogo is on loan at Ajax.

            • 11 Years

Hadn't seen the Sanogo story, cheers, Sanchez prefers to play out wide, rather than centre forward, for me it looks like Giroud is the only natural striker Arsenal have

Regarding Sanchez, I am well aware of that. But as an Arsenal fan yourself(?), you should know that Walcott was preferred to Giroud in the FA Cup final.

Not an Arsenal fan, that's Clarence, not Gunnarsarus.

He did yes, but I think Giroud is preferred and Walcott can get game time out wide, he doesn't have to play centre forward

    2. Nice to Finally Michu
