With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

      Usual issues.

      Gks
      Too much money in d
Too many question marks about those in midpark
      Cheap forward being used upfront.

      3/10.

a little harsh. defence is OK, and walcott is the only real question mark in defence. wilson is an enabler.

Thanks for reply, but disagree on the defence comments. Thats where the value is usually! Toying with idea of swapping walcott back to ozil depending on community shield and finding the extra money for sahko upfront.

no worries i think having BOTH Hazard and Costa wrecks your team a bit. Ideally would only have one of Punch/Wilson. Also think Sterling is a pretty big risk to start at 9.0. That said i am punting on Depay but he is cheaper and can actually finish.

I personally like puncheon because pardew has palace playing so attacking and hes been good for me the last few seasons. I worry that cabaye will steal set pieces though. Would love to find the extra mill for wilson to sahko, but cant. maybe wally to ozil and try squeze 0.5 out of defence.

I quite like the sterling thing, if Kun's out he might get a start up front. You could get Targett in for a 4.5er? Think he might get a game in the first few weeks.

  8. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?
    • 12 Years
    10 years, 4 months ago

So, I've done a bunch of research on expected points gain per extra $ spent and have come to the decision that the best bang for buck lies with defenders and the worst of the lot are forwards.

    Stekelenburg / Hennessey
    Azpi / Kos / Cedric / Clyne / Francis
    Henderson / Ozil / Walcott / Hazard / Mane
    Kane / Wilson / Jerome

I would be playing a 4-5-1 in most weeks. I really like the concept of the team but I don't think it's refined yet. I think it would be good to free up another million somehow and upgrade Kane to Rooney, yeah?

        I think so, yes.

I may tweak it a little and play with someone like Sakho as a forward but overall, I'll be going this route.

I've actually done a lot of additional research on value after my last post, if there's interest I can post that for people.

      1. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

I'd been thinking of that. IF I want Kun, I can do Mane - > 4.5 and take Kane to Kun.

If I can find another million somewhere, that let's me upgrade Francis and play a 5-4-1 instead.

      I like the Butland/Ruddy rotation a lot.

No holes in defense. 6/6/3*4.5 looks ideal this season.

Like the midfield too. What's your plan with Walcott if he isn't nailed anymore?

The frontline is the one that I have a few doubts on. Pelle really stopped last season. Maybe Lukaku? Has horrible fixtures I know, but he can score against anyone if in form.

I'm not entirely sure atm with regards to wally but there's plenty of options in that price range that could start to fire. I'm going to start with pelle and see but if tekkers settles quickly its not to hard to bring him in, or I might just WC to bring Kun in which will change anything anyway. So in other words I have no clue!

From the last page, I didn't say Chelsea's opening fixtures were difficult. I said they were MORE difficult than their opening fixtures from the previous few seasons.

I am in support. Chelsea may still grind out many CS's out of those fixtures, but both fullbacks will have very less chance of attacking returns.

Hi guys. Can we consider Mulumbu (WBA, 4.5) as a good FPL option? I'v chosen Anya but rotation & transfers in Watford made me think again.

everyone seems dicey but Wanayama, but makes sense that playing 4.5's will be at Watford and BOU, Norwich not so likely, they have 5 priced higher than Mulumu@ 4.5, Hoolahan on pens seemed a good punt but I got scared off.

Mane with a good fixture list. Ozil in form and no risk due to rotation. Wilson is a budget choice and he got good fixture list. I need to take a look at GK. But 4/10 come on hahaha

I am more of a fan. Not personally convinced by Ozil, willing to wait on Depay. Not a fan of Clyne at the back either - not really sure I understand his 43% ownership.

thanks. Clyne with his offensive contribution and LFC home fixture list is why i pick him, but could downgrade him to Sakho (5.0). Ozil, Ramsey, Cazorla and Wally is on my radar and i am watching the situation. I just have a good feeling with Depay, playing as a nr 10, with eye for goal. think he will raise in price early on. utd have a ok fixture list as well.. but you never know it is fantasy

i agree, with so many playmakers in midfield and goalscoring midfielders that the modern game gives us it is vital to get the balance straight. with the new bonus system it is wise to spend some money in defence to. wilson could be a new austin ings this year, like him as a player. fast, good technique good power. bournemouth will play attacking football this year...

    Here's one I'm undecided on:

Problem being that I'm not convinced by Benteke, and he makes getting Aguero without a WC or hits significantly harder. Yet I'm not overly fond of Chelsea's first few, making B also less attractive.

    Hi guys,

Still places up for grabs in the £5 entry FFS leaugue.

Currently have around 35 members. Hoping to get this number to around 60-70 so we have a nice pot of money to give out when the season ends.

    No fees.

    1st Place - 50% of total pot
    2nd Place - 30% of total pot
    3rd Place - 20% of total pot

If you are interested, send me an email at fantasyfootballaz7@gmail.com. The £5 will be paid through PayPal. Weekly updates to be posted on the community round up and hopefully this will become a yearly competition I run.

If you were on the reserve list, please check your emails as I emailed you all a few weeks ago.

    Cheers!

Need suggestions and comments on this team:

    Hart Schmeichel

    Rooney Vydra Lukaku

    1. Jordan Stott

Hart in goal seems like a waste of £1m to me and Lukaku is always hit and miss, even though he has a kind looking GW1. Strong looking midfield though!

Personally I currently have Schmeichel and Butland, but there are better rotation pairings around if that H/A rotation was your thing.

Lukaku looks tempting for the Watford game! But I can't be sure whether he'll actually perform, maybe would use the extra cash for Benteke instead? (again he's a slight risk but has better looking fixtures especially at home over the first few weeks)

Like I said, just a coupe of small things because having Haz, Depay, Sterling and Ozil looks very very nice indeed.

              10 years, 4 months ago

I've currently got both in my team. I think that Depay could start the season well, but if he doesn't then he can be easily swapped out for Mane, Sterling, Cazorla, Fabregas, Erkisen etc etc...

Rooney is a must for me for the opening few as there is no Aguero! If he starts up front (which I'm 99% sure Van Gaal will do) he is proven for a decade now to score goals so for me he's staying.
