Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo became Aston Villa’s fourth defensive recruit of the summer, after arriving earlier today for a reported fee of just £500,000. The 28-year-old follows Mark Bunn, Micah Richards and Jordan Amavi to the Midlands as Tim Sherwood continues to restructure his first-team squad.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Sherwood revealed he’s a long-term admirer of the new recruit:

“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we’re really pleased to secure his signature. He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can’t wait to play for Aston Villa.”

The History

Born in Andalusia, Crespo worked his way up the youth ranks at Sevilla after joining them as a 15-year-old. After two years of training at their academy, he made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos midway through the 2005/06 La Liga campaign. Crespo managed a further two league starts that term, spending the remainder of his time turning out for their reserve outfit.

Crespo earned just 23 first-team appearances at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán over the next three seasons while tallying three goals in 73 outings for the B team. In pursuit of a regular starting berth, the Spain U21 international then made the switch to Racing Santander for the 2009/10 campaign. Unfavoured during his stint with the Cantabria club, Crespo notched just 13 appearances over the course of the season.

Having been released by Sevilla in the summer of 2010, the Spaniard plotted a route to Serie B side Padova, where he chalked up one goal in 43 appearances. He then transferred to Serie A outfit Bologna the following summer, recording just seven appearances (three starts) during his debut campaign with the Red-Blues.

Crespo dropped down to Serie B for the 2012/13 season, carding 14 appearances in a year-long loan spell at Verona. With a return to Bologna harvesting only 10 appearances throughout the 2013/14 campaign, Crespo went out on loan to Cordoba last summer. Despite failing to register a single goal or assist across 27 appearances, Crespo signed a permanent deal with the Spanish club earlier this month before making his move to Villa.

At international level, he made a total of 15 appearances for the Spanish U19, U20 and U21 sides but has never been selected for senior duties.

The Prospects

The versatile Crespo offers Sherwood an option right across the back-four slots. Last season at Cordoba, he started 26 times – 14 as a centre-half, nine at left-back and three of the right of defence – whilst in his final year with Bologna, he primarily lined up on the right of midfield.

Whether he can do enough to justify a starting berth is another matter entirely. Crespo averaged less than 15 appearances per season over the past four years, with his most recent stint at Cordoba marking just the second time in his career that he’s been afforded a prolonged run of starts. Having accrued just 83 outings in the top tier of Spanish and Italian football, he may well prove no more than back-up in a defence that was hit hard by injuries in 2014/15.

Certainly, new boy Jordan Amavi looks nailed-on at left-back, given the significant outlay, and with Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark currently shaping up to be the Villains’ favoured centre-back partnership, one would imagine that Crespo needs to displace Alan Hutton at right-back to earn a spot in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI. Given that Leandro Bacuna also offers an option for that position, it looks by no mean certain that Crespo will find his way into the starting XI.

In terms of fixtures, Sherwood’s side have a decent start, with showdowns against Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six. The fact that Villa conceded 57 times last term – the third worst defence in the top-flight – suggests investment may be hard to come by for Sherwood’s backline regulars.

Setting you back 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Crespo is identically priced to Richards, though the former City defender looks a far more secure pick if you’re looking at cut-price options.

For those prepared to shell out more, Amavi (5.0) netted four goals last term and crafted more key passes (32) than all but seven Premier League defenders. Bacuna, meanwhile, has been stationed on the right of midfield in pre-season and could offer us an out-of-position option – the Dutchman racked up five assists as a right-back in just 983 minutes at the end of last term and also has a share of set-pieces.

Given that the likes of Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the West Brom defence are also available for 5.0, though, it looks very unlikely that many will be prepared to splash out on a porous backline that has plenty of convincing still to do.

I think he just "feels" a little over-priced at 9.5 and there's the "second-year blues" syndrome a lot of punters are cautious about.

Spurs have reasonable fixtures after GW 1 and if he scores in the first few games you'd expect him to gather a bandwagon. Could be a good alternative if Costa is ruled out or loses confidence amongst his owners.

I've had Kane in from the start and expect I'll still have him in come GW1. If he doesn't produce in the first three matches, he becomes fodder for being able to upgrade. If he produces, he's becoming a differential.

Also, I'm not buying into the sophomore slump. Now, I don't necessarily expect the same output as last year, but given the way he tends to score (less reliant on technical skill than movement, effort, instincts), I just don't see that teams will "figure him out." You figure out tendencies, you don't figure out instincts and movement.

    Thoughts:

    Butland/Ruddy
    Kos/PVA/Cedric/Francis/4m
    Ozil/Fabs/Tadic/Ritchie/Fletcher
    Rooney/Aguero/Pelle

A little heavy up front but I don't think the rest suffers too much.

No reason to go 5.5m on a keeper.
Plenty of good options at 5.0. Pantilimon is a decent bet. Sunderland play rather tight (especially under Advocaat) and he tends to make plenty of saves.

Lovren is no longer waiting. I doubt Sakho is in too much trouble.

Moreno looked significantly better in his second preseason start.

I'd say Sakho is a better shout although I wouldn't touch Pool defenders at this point.

Milner - can he rediscover old form with regular play?
Henderson - depends if he is on penalties.
Tadic - could be an assist machine, but will he start?
Chadli - good in patches, loved on here but I'm not quite sure why.

Thanks for your input. I think i'm going to go with Chadli as he is more of a goal threat then the other 3 & also because I have Benteke & Clyne already in my squad & I don't think having 3 Liv players is suitable 🙂

You're welcome. Three Liverpool might be too many to start the season with. Chadli is either an exceptional finisher or he over-performed his underlying stats last season.

Chadli for me purely because of his goal threat

Not sold on Milner and Henderson will likely play too deep for my liking

I do expect Tadic to have a much better season 2nd time around now that he knows the league, players, teams etc

I think I've figured out an approach I'm comfortable with. I'm starting with Rooney and Kane up top, and have a bunch of 8.5 and 9.0 midfielders plus Hazard. After three weeks and when I'm ready to transfer in Aguero, the lesser of the two forwards will get transferred out for Kun, and I'll use the funds freed up by downgrading the worst of my mid-priced midfielders in order to accomplish it. I feel it's safer to have Sterling, Ozil/Wally, and Mane to start with, see which one doesn't produce, and downgrade that person to fund Aguero.

To me, that's more prudent than me trying to predict, in advance, who's going to produce early: Rooney or Kane, and Sterling or Mane or Ozil/Wally. Let their performance dictate the moves, not my (likely to be incorrect) guesses on who will play best.

I have basically the same setup, but Costa and Rooney up front, and no Hazard. Like you say, it gives plenty of midfield options to downgrade in order to upgrade a forward to Aguero.

Exactly. I'm basically looking to minimize risk and avoid having to make a ton of transfers to get in Aguero later. If that means going fairly budget on defense to start, I'm cool with that. Clean sheets are hard to predict early in a season anyway.

How on earth can you afford that? I have Roon, Kane & Hazard, and right now I'm 2.0m short of what you just described....

My current team is below. Again, I admit I'm light on top-tier defenders, but I think they are more important to have in the second half when things get more tense. For now, I'll stick with a goalie who will get a few clean sheets and save points, and defenders who are guaranteed to play and rotate well.

        Schmeichel - Schwarzer

Cedric - Williams (possibly Jenkinson or Toby instead) - Huth - Francis - O'Shea

        Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Mane - Wanyama

        Rooney - Kane - Sakho

This one is tricky. Pre-season has been all about possession. But the rumours of us getting Austin just won't go away. So we could end up playing 2 big men up front. If that happens, then as we are stocked with centre mids rather than wingers, I can only really see us playing a 4-4-2 diamond with the fullbacks pushing right on. This may make janmaat very attractive

Very interesting, thanks. I guess if more possession leads to a lot fewer goals against, there could be some bargains in that defence.

Well, the shadow of Costa's spaghetti hamstrings will definitely linger on this season. It's probably something we all already knew but perhaps chose to cast a blind eye over. Needless to say, the gorilla in the room has been found.

Even if he's fit for GW1 (i'm guessing he will sit out the charity shield and will continue to be flagged til GW1 if it is indeed his hamstring), it just raises the risk in captaining him and affects his minutes the first few games anyway.

Those going Hazard-less, how does this affect your thinking?

Those going Costa + Rooney, what now? The next options below Costa are 8-9m, meaning 2 mil will obviously be spread around the team. Does Rooney become the Aguero placeholder? If so, would you be sacrificing your only United attacker for Aguero? Does this have a knock-on effect on having Mata/Depay in your starting squads so you'll still have 1 United attacker when Rooney makes way for Kun?

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years

Think i'll stay away from him. Will get Pelle in for his good run of fixtures. the dilemma i have is Fabs/Hazard. Hazard looked great today but Fabregas looked as big an assist threat as the start of last season. could easily keep pace with hazard over the first few months considering the fixtures are hard and could come down to set pieces/an intricate through ball etc to break deadlocks. just 2 -3 Hazard captaincy games in the first 10 games too. the 2.5 saved could make getting aguero in very easy

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years

Didn't watch the match but I am not surprised since Fab has been statistically proven as a fast starter. Is the Fab/Hazard double-up a realistic option? If Fab, would you keep the 2.5 in the bank or spread it out?

their fixtures dont warrant a double up.. especially when Soton/Manutd/Arsenal have great fixtures and i want their attackers too.

on hearing the news a short time ago, I went Costa --> Giroud leaving me 2.0 ITB. Front line is Sakho, Tekkers and Giroud. the change will be used to upgrade to someone like Aguero once the dust settles. not sure if it's a wise tactic but that's where i am right now.

I'll still go without Hazard. Just means I have to have a strong place holder for Aguero. Giroud and Rooney are the two candidates. I might also get Fabregas so I can have at least one way into the Chelsea attack.

When the season starts and Cabaye takes a peno/scores from a direct free kick in the opening 3(nor and AVL could be gold) weeks almost everyone will downgrade a premium mid to him to free up Aguero cash by saying things like "ManCity have a poor defense and Palace are playing em at home" and "Spurs defense is sh!te" . For anyone considering an uber def, here is an idea i like and will probably go with this season.

    For first 8 gws:

Butland, Ruddy (CPL sun nor WBA BOU LEI BOU LEI)

    Lescott, Cedric, O’shea, Huth, Francis

SUN/LEI/BOU gives: SUN NOR SWA LEI AVL SUN stk WAT

I can drop Lescott gw 1 and 3 when he has MCI, CHE and replace him with AVL, TOT/whu

I can drop Cedric gw 6 and 8 when he has MUN and che and replace him with bou/sto, WHU

(LEI/SUN/NOR)+WAT is good for at least 12 weeks and you can always add Mert or Aspi once you find a bargain elsewhere

you can get a decent team with Haz+Aguero and some other stars too

Clyne overrated defensively. Schneiderlin big loss but they still have Wanyama. Clasie looks a good signing. They look very likely to sign a new CB. Cedric offers attacking threat and has great fixtures.

The changes in the backline are something of an unknown, but they managed to pull it off at the start of last year. What I was thinking of more was whether they would start this season like they started last season, or whether they would start this season like they ended last season.
