The end of pre-season is nearly in sight for the community as they fine-tune their Gameweek 1 sides and eagerly await the start of the new Premier League campaign. This week we ramped up our support for those needing their teams rated and also took an in-depth look at player value. Meanwhile, in our hot topics, the community was full of advice on midfield heavy hitters and rotation strategies. Elsewhere, one of our most prolific Members table creators has been paying close attention to the attacking intent of defenders.

The Community Articles

Our support for those struggling to construct a Gameweek 1 side picked up the pace this week with the launch of our first live Rate My Team surgeries, where our team of moderators, along with the community, were on hand to answer the key questions ahead of the season’s start. The first session on Wednesday also featured a live Scoutcast where Mark and myself looked in detail at your draft teams. Keep an eye out next week when we have further surgeries planned.

Finding value is key to securing the best initial 15 in Fantasy Premier League and Why Always Mesut was on hand with some number crunching to find the best bargains in the game.

For those looking to construct the more complex 25-man squads needed for the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game Djenzio opened up a community surgery to help out. Meanwhile, for those playing in a draft league, The Cisco Kid‘s top three tips for surviving draft day will prove key reading.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

To construct the perfect Gameweek 1 side, each Fantasy manager has their own dos and don’t list, as we discovered in our discussion on getting the best start possible.

There were further tips for taking pole position in the race for Fantasy football glory from Enzo the Baker and for those submitting RMTs, Innsie offered this must-read set of rules to ensure you get the help you need.

Sticking with RMT support, Giggs Boson was on hand to sum up the key questions that need answering before we perfect our starting XIs. He also attempted to quell some of the enthusiasm amongst the community that Raheem Sterling is generating after his move to Manchester City.

There is also plenty of enthusiasm for the wealth of options in the Arsenal midfield, with our discussion on the Gunners revealing that many are happy to double up on their attacking assets.

With more than half of FPL managers owning Eden Hazard, the Chelsea midfielder is another much-heralded prospect for 2015/16. Opinion was nonetheless divided in our discussion as to whether going without the Belgian enhances or ruins a Gameweek 1 side.

Another issue to consider when searching for the best Gameweek 1 side is home and away rotation, particularly when picking your cheaper players. But, asked Smurf, are we too quick to put our faith in this strategy?

Another popular strategy is to focus on penalty takers. No Money took the role of naysayer in the debate on this issue, as he unearthed a lack of spot kicks amongst minnows in particular. For those sticking to this policy, our hot topic on the latest set piece takers to emerge during pre-season will prove vital reading.

This season’s introduction of ‘chips’ has the potential to transform FPL. When we asked what other ‘chips’ you would like to see Waitinginthelonggrass revealed he would like to see all points doubled, while Andy85wsm would like to see a top up chip, to guarantee 60 points in one week, for better or worse.

Finally, Gameweek 1 can be the trickiest of weeks to predict, with the unexpected frequently destroying our carefully-laid plans. Demi dropped by to spark up this lively discussion on your wild and wonderful 2015/16 predictions.

The Members Tables

One of our regular table constructors Vougiedipond has turned his attention to offensive defenders for his latest set of figures. Southampton fans are advised to pay close attention to the second best defender in this list.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

Triple Saints might be a bit heavy and Jagielka has a horrible run of games after wk.1 through to about wk.9. I'd probably downgrade one of your defenders (most likely Jags) and see if I can find obvious attacking improvements with the freed up funds.

      Best of luck, JM.

This team okay or should I do Sakho ---> Lambert and use the 0.5 to upgrade elsewhere?

    ----------------Schmeichel-------------

    ------------Ivan - Kos - Cedric--------

    Hazard - Walcott - Depay - Sterling

    ---------Sakho - Rooney - Deene----

    Bench: 4m keeper - Huth - Targett - Wanyama

Sterling and Rooney ----> Ritchie and Aguero if needed down the line

Rodgers said earlier that Benteke and Firmino haven't had much time to prepare and was doubtful about GW1

But after the last time they faced Stoke I doubt he's going to play Origi/ Ings ahead of Benteke.

I think it was more directed at Firmino, Ibe would be the likely replacement and could cause Stoke some problems

With Watford playing their last preseason match tonight I thought I'd compile this of who scored and assisted their goals in preseason. many of you may find this useless but I had a bit of free time and decided to look through who scored and assisted these goals as Ighalo vs Deeney seems to be a bit of a debate which is going on.

    Comparison:
Watford played 6 preseason games. Scoring 13 and conceding 6 in the process. Most seem to be going for Deeney on here as he was there top scorer last year and scored well in the championship for the last 3 years. During preseason Deeney scored 2 goals and assisted 3. This seems a respectable amount in 6 games but Ighalo scored 6 goals in the same amount. Fair enough Ighalo did not register an assist over the 6 games but 6 goals scores a lot more in fantasy football than 3 assists and 2 goals does.

Also worth noting is over the 6 games the Watford centre back Craig Cathcart assisted twice. I realise Watford Defence is useless and it's very unlikely that anyone will want one especially with there fixtures at the start but if you want a Watford defender he would be my choice.

I drafted very rough estimates of fantasy points Ighalo and Deeney would have scored over the 6 games and it goes as follows.

    Ighalo: 34
    Deeney: 33

As you can see it's very very Close.

I personally would still go for Deeney despite the 0.5m extra. He has just signed a new contract, he's the captain and will want to impress and he has more of a strong premier league build. Also, 4 of Ighalos goals came against SC Verl and St. Albans, 2 very poor oppositions I am unsure how he would cope against better teams. However, I still think Ighalo is by far the best option at the 5m mark.

I'm a big fan of Ighalo too, and would love to have the balls to go for him over Deeney.

I think the extra 0.5m for security and penalties is worth it. After watching Watford play, the attacking mids and Deeney like to link up so worst case scenario is Deeney picks up a few assists which is only at 1 point less.

Now granted bonus points are a factor, but still, I'd rather take less risks on players going into GW1 and not force myself into wildcarding so early from risky choices

      1. Greasy

You're right. Its a weird season this year, I love Ighalo as a 5m prospect and hate all 5m Mids. However I still wouldn't be able to fit him in as the striker spots are so important as there's only 3.

No problem. If I'm honest, no they look pretty bad. Could scrape wins against poor teams but the only 2 decent teams they played in preseason were Cardiff(lost 2-1) and Sevilla(lost 1-0). Deeney got the goal against Cardiff who are an alright side so that's another plus for him I suppose.

Mané not an option? I think he could have a great season.

      Pelle & Özil, if not.

U could sack of arsenal coverage at the start, at least until we know which of ballerina/debauchy; merte/Gabriel is more nailed

Is it just me or does true detective season 2 have a "the wire" feel to it?

I loved the first season, like the second too. The environment isn't the same and the story isn't as good but it's a bit faster and some more action to it. Hopefully character development gets a bit better (on episode 5).

    RMT

    Ruddy (Butland)
    Cedric Azpi Lescott (Huth Baker)
    Hazard Silva Ozil Chadli Ritchie
    Rooney Pelle (Ighalo)

I think young might be a good shout instead of Ritchie but what are your thoughts?

Chads to Mane somehow. Not sure about the Leicester and Villa rotation at the back maybe your better off with Huth and Mings.

young won't be a starter , LVG is going to turn the formation into 4-3-3 with herrera or fellaini + bastian and schinderlein and the front 3 are mata depay rooney , also ritchie is a great player with easy early fixtures , good luck

GK's - Both will be starters so good choice here!

Def - Nicely balanced but not sure about baker!

MID - Strong but take chadli out, i believe he is out atm with family bereavement

Strikers - Same as mine but i got deeney!

Overall, i think its quite balanced if you are going for more points up front

      Keep young out!
