The end of pre-season is nearly in sight for the community as they fine-tune their Gameweek 1 sides and eagerly await the start of the new Premier League campaign. This week we ramped up our support for those needing their teams rated and also took an in-depth look at player value. Meanwhile, in our hot topics, the community was full of advice on midfield heavy hitters and rotation strategies. Elsewhere, one of our most prolific Members table creators has been paying close attention to the attacking intent of defenders.

The Community Articles

Our support for those struggling to construct a Gameweek 1 side picked up the pace this week with the launch of our first live Rate My Team surgeries, where our team of moderators, along with the community, were on hand to answer the key questions ahead of the season’s start. The first session on Wednesday also featured a live Scoutcast where Mark and myself looked in detail at your draft teams. Keep an eye out next week when we have further surgeries planned.

Finding value is key to securing the best initial 15 in Fantasy Premier League and Why Always Mesut was on hand with some number crunching to find the best bargains in the game.

For those looking to construct the more complex 25-man squads needed for the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game Djenzio opened up a community surgery to help out. Meanwhile, for those playing in a draft league, The Cisco Kid‘s top three tips for surviving draft day will prove key reading.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

To construct the perfect Gameweek 1 side, each Fantasy manager has their own dos and don’t list, as we discovered in our discussion on getting the best start possible.

There were further tips for taking pole position in the race for Fantasy football glory from Enzo the Baker and for those submitting RMTs, Innsie offered this must-read set of rules to ensure you get the help you need.

Sticking with RMT support, Giggs Boson was on hand to sum up the key questions that need answering before we perfect our starting XIs. He also attempted to quell some of the enthusiasm amongst the community that Raheem Sterling is generating after his move to Manchester City.

There is also plenty of enthusiasm for the wealth of options in the Arsenal midfield, with our discussion on the Gunners revealing that many are happy to double up on their attacking assets.

With more than half of FPL managers owning Eden Hazard, the Chelsea midfielder is another much-heralded prospect for 2015/16. Opinion was nonetheless divided in our discussion as to whether going without the Belgian enhances or ruins a Gameweek 1 side.

Another issue to consider when searching for the best Gameweek 1 side is home and away rotation, particularly when picking your cheaper players. But, asked Smurf, are we too quick to put our faith in this strategy?

Another popular strategy is to focus on penalty takers. No Money took the role of naysayer in the debate on this issue, as he unearthed a lack of spot kicks amongst minnows in particular. For those sticking to this policy, our hot topic on the latest set piece takers to emerge during pre-season will prove vital reading.

This season’s introduction of ‘chips’ has the potential to transform FPL. When we asked what other ‘chips’ you would like to see Waitinginthelonggrass revealed he would like to see all points doubled, while Andy85wsm would like to see a top up chip, to guarantee 60 points in one week, for better or worse.

Finally, Gameweek 1 can be the trickiest of weeks to predict, with the unexpected frequently destroying our carefully-laid plans. Demi dropped by to spark up this lively discussion on your wild and wonderful 2015/16 predictions.

The Members Tables

One of our regular table constructors Vougiedipond has turned his attention to offensive defenders for his latest set of figures. Southampton fans are advised to pay close attention to the second best defender in this list.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

    Evening everyone.

So I've been pondering the best way to start the season, the best time to use my first WC, and the best way to play my new chips.

    1. Many have commented that a strong start to the season is important and advocate an early WC.
    2. Clearly the chips triple captain and bench chips are best saved for DGWs, but what about the 2-5-3 formation?

I think there is a good case for playing the 2-5-3 chip right after or before a WC because when else are we likely to have 8 strong attacking options ready for just the right set of fixtures?

On that basis, I'm beginning to think that an early WC (I'm thinking GW5 during international break and right after the transfer window closes) gives us a great opportunity to set up a squad for a decent 2-5-3 GW while also allowing us the chance to pick a strong squad for the first 4 GWs.

Having decided to play my WC in GW5, I looked at the 1st 4 GWs and at the top sides to have good fixtures there. SOT, ARS and MUN look like the best options. I then looked at which of the first 4 GWs best suits those teams for attacking returns, and it looks to me like GW1.

So here's my squad for 1st 4 GWs, with intention to play my 2-5-3 chip in GW1:

    Pants - 4.0

    Fonte - Cedric - Francis - Huth - STaylor

    Walcott - Ozil - Depay - Mata - Mane

    Rooney - Giroud - Wilson

Thoughts on this approach to getting off to a strong start?

Thanks. Last year I might have agreed with you, but this year I'm leaning far more in favour of going early. Partly because of the Aguero, Sanchez situation (and various other players returning to full fitness).

I may live to regret, but I do think there's logic in an early WC sometimes.

It depends on how you're going I suppose. The point is if you're struggling you don't have to feel bad about using a wildcard. I'm not sure planning to use it early is a good thing though!?

          1. Dugout
            • 11 Years
            10 years, 6 months ago

I think the advantage of planning to use it early is that you can pick your squad for a set number of GWs - i.e. I have no Chelsea for first 4, whereas I'd have at least 2 if I picked for a longer run.

Of course, the disadvantage is that I may be forced/tempted to take a few hits by mid-November...

The key for me will be to get an early advantage over my competitors, and lure them into taking a few risks.

In the end though, it's about the roll of the dice...the winner is the one who took the right risks!

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of committing your WC usage before the season has even started, but given what you're trying to achieve, I think you've got a near perfect set-up.

Given that it's the way you're going tactically. I'd consider playing your All Out Attack chip in Wk.4, when Bournemouth host Leicester. It might offer a bit more flexibility to your thinking come the WC, in that you could have a punt on a 5th Mid or 3rd Fwd differential or stick a bench-warmer in one of those slots to free up some funds elsewhere. I'd also consider using your WC in Wk.4. If Aguero is your chosen post-WC tactic, wk.4 looks like the optimum early opportunity to get him in and build a team around him (or more specifically his astronomical price).

Best of luck, LV GVJ. I hope you keep us updated with how the experiment fairs and which route you followed.

Thanks SHMADZ. Yeah, you've made some fair points. If ARS and MUN had home fixtures in GW4 it would have been the ideal scenario.

If I have the balls to do this I'll no doubt be letting everyone know how it went!

playing a chip in GW1 is a total lottery - do you even know the players' form?

Yes, it is a total lottery - I'll give you that.
Form - I think we'll have some idea, but I agree we'll know far more after 3-4 weeks - hence early WC! Cheers.

I think Newcastle's start is putting people off. He was in my first draft after last season's stellar efforts but persuaded myself that it is better to wait until GW8 when the fixtures get considerably easier (NEW top the ticker for GW8 next 6).
Also gives you a chance to assess how the team are going to be under Mclaren

That is a really tricky one. I've never played draft so can't really answer.
Suppose it depends on if you're happy to take the risk of him getting injured during the first 7 tough matches and also if you're happy to have a £5m defender sat on your bench for a lot of the 1st games?
If you're dead set on getting him in then have a look to see if someone at 4.5m rotates well with him (Sunderland for example)?

I like that. I presume you wanna play 3-5-2 with Wilson as cover?

Personally I think you could do Fabregas ---> Hazard and make Henderson a 4.5m

Bring Deeney in as a 5.5m striker or stick with Wilson and play 3-4-3, meaning you can still have Aguero and Hazard

Currently do have Ivan, but may sell for Kolarov if Clichy is out

              No Kun but cash ITB

If I start with Ivan he may go after GW3 anyway to make room for Kun

If you want Kun and Hazard you have to sacrifice somewhere since you're splurging 1/3 of your budget on 2 players
