City’s Samir Nasri is ruled out for three more months. Roberto Martinez is keen to court caution with Leighton Baines’ fitness. Diafra Sakho looks set to return for West Ham, whilst Jamie Vardy could undertake pain-killing injections to be passed fit for Leicester’s trip to Newcastle.

Nasri Remains Sidelined for City

City midfielder Samir Nasri took to social media yesterday to confirm he faces another three months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: With a single start to his name this term, the Frenchman has fallen far from Fantasy radars. Nasri managed a goal and assist between Gameweek 3-5 but has played just 51 minutes since, courtesy of a couple of sub appearances. His continued absence will at least lessen the chances of rotation for the likes of Kevin de Bruyne as Manuel Pellegrini looks to cope with a hectic upcoming schedule. The Belgian has played from start to finish in five of his seven starts, for example, whereas Raheem Sterling has managed 90 minutes just once all season. With David Silva closing in on a comeback and Jesus Navas also in contention, City’s summer spending spree stands them in good stead on the flanks as the fixture list starts to pick up.

Vardy Could Play Through Pain Barrier

Reports indicate that Jamie Vardy has recovered from a groin problem sustained following a heavy fall against Watford but is still being bothered by a hip injury. The Leicester man could take pain-alleviating injections to put him in contention for Leicester’s road tie against Newcastle on Saturday.

The Scout Says: Vardy will be desperate to make the trip to the North East, considering that a goal at St James’ Park would see him match Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 10-game scoring streak. The non-league success story has a history of playing through the pain barrier (he took injections in his foot last season and currently has a cast on his broken wrist), so there’s every chance he’ll declare himself available for the Magpies clash. On the downside, if the 53%-owned Vardy is sidelined, some Fantasy managers might toy with the idea of selling the 7.4-priced forward in the knowledge that the schedule (MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv, MCI) is about to turn tricky from Gameweek 14. In particular, those who also own Riyad Mahrez might feel that they’re pushing their luck doubling up on Leicester coverage across that tricky run.

Everton Issue Injury Update

Roberto Martinez reported that Tom Cleverley is in with a chance of making the squad for Aston Villa’s visit as he approaches full fitness.

β€œTom is fully fit now. He had a little bit of a cold over the weekend that stopped him from training but he is back now and it is about making sure he gets in enough work in order to be considered 100 per cent. He is not far away from being available for the squad.”

The Spanish boss also provided an update on Leighton Baines, revealing that the left-back’s rehabilitation is progressing well, but he’s still not ready to grace the pitch:

β€œThe break has been exactly what Leighton needed. He has been able to have contact with the football and develop that match fitness that he needs. We need to be cautious because it was a re-injury, and he has been sidelined for a long period of time. We will give him as much time as we can but we are in a positive period. A lot of good work has been put in, he had the behind-closed-doors game and every day in training is another step towards getting him back to full fitness and being available. I think it is too early to tell when that moment will be when he can be reintroduced back into the team but certainly every day is a step towards that.”

The Scout Says: Given that Arouna Kone bagged a hat-trick two Gameweeks ago and Gerard Deulofeu looks un-droppable on current form, Cleverley has a fight on his hands to wrestle control of a wide berth. Although he’s unlikely to establish himself as a regular starter over the Christmas period, Cleverley’s return to contention does at least increase the risk that Deulofeu will be subbed off before the final whistle – particularly in winning scenarios when Martinez wants to exercise control in midfield. Indeed, Deulofeu has played from start to finish on just two occasions for the Toffees so far. Baines returned to our radars after serving up a goal and assist for the reserves last week but judging by Martinez’ words, it seems he may not be ready for a first start quite yet, ensuring that Seamus Coleman remains our preferred Everton defender for the time being ahead of an excellent run of fixtures.

Sakho Steps Up Hammers Recovery

West Ham United’s medical confirmed that Diafra Sakho returned to full training following a muscle complaint and will be available to feature against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend:

β€œWe have some positive news regarding Diafra Sakho, who has returned to full training following his recovery from a quadriceps injury suffered ahead of the Watford game. Diafra will be available for Sunday’s game at Tottenham Hotspur.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Andy Carroll mustered just two attempts (zero on target) in his last two starts, Slaven Bilic will be keen to involve Sakho in some capacity at White Hart Lane. In response to Dimitri Payet’s absence, there’s a chance that Manuel Lanzini orchestrates play from the number-ten berth, freeing up a wing slot for Sakho to claim in the coming Gameweeks. Even in the event that he usurps Carroll from the lone-striker berth, the Senegalese marksman’s increased risk of rotation is a deterrent as the Hammers close out the year with a relatively challenging run of fixtures (tot, WBA, mun, STO, swa, avl, SOU).

Bentaleb Fit for Tottenham

According to the Algerian FA, Nabil Bentaleb was substituted at the 36-minute mark of their match-up against Tanzania for disciplinary reasons (he earned a yellow) and not, as previously reported, a recurrence of his foot injury.

The Scout Says: A mainstay for Spurs in the previous campaign, Bentaleb got off to a shaky start this season and now faces a tall task displacing either Delle Alli or Eric Dier to regain a spot in the double pivot. That being said, Mauricio Pochettino will be wary of overworking the newly appointed England internationals as the fixtures begin to pile up, opening the door for the likes of Bentaleb and Ryan Mason to log some pitch time, with the upcoming Europa League matches perhaps a perfect time to afford them minutes. With four home matches in six, Christian Eriksen looks the likeliest source of points in the Spurs midfield, though Mousa Dembele has netted twice in the last three and could be worth a flutter at just 5.3, providing he shrugs off a knock in time for the weekend visit of West Ham.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Chelsea's form but such great fixtures

The overwhelming feeling on the Scoutcast last night was that Chelsea should be avoided in spite of their excellent kind run of games. But are we missing a trick? Can Chelsea turn it around in time? Surely a Chelsea relegation scrap is the stuff of fantasy?

Who is gambling on a turnaround from the likes of Hazard?

And what does Chelsea's slump means for Fantasy football this season? Are we being deprived of further good options? Or is it making us think a little more creatively for our captains and transfers?

I said recently that teams like Chelsea getting great runs like this but in such bad form is narrowing the usually good options a little bit.

Captains are tending to be a little creative or at least mixed up - no Aguero (c) week in week out which is a change of pace but making my team suffer πŸ™‚

The main reason I think Chelsea attackers should be avoided is from midfield I'd tend to only want Hazard. I've toyed with the idea of Willian but think it's a bit risky. Costa takes up a forward spot when Kane, Lukaku and Vardy are doing so well and Aguero is back soon.

Defence is where I'd be looking at. If I go 4 big(ish) defenders at the back I'm already looking at Azpilcueta.

I'm treating this season, as I do every season, as a stand alone year. If we were going on the past, we would have avoided all Leicester and West Ham options, we'd have loaded up on Chelsea, we'd have Rooney leading the line and all be rushing to get Baines in.

Chelsea aren't a side that have had a blip but look to be turning a corner, they appear to be worse and worse every time I see them play. Their problems run deep, and while they won't finish near the relegation zone (I don't think), they don't look a side capable of blistering form at all. They haven't really impressed since the end of 2014.

We are 1/3 of the way through the season, this is not a brief stumble, this is a lengthy malaise. Chelsea are 1 point above Newcastle, 1 point behind Norwich - they must be treated as such. We would not be loading up on Norwich players if they had a good run, nor should we be loading up on Chelsea players. Do we even know who will play? As their form suffers, so does the stability of the XI as Mourinho tries to find a working formula.

With the wider FPL, I like the Chelsea decline (although not as much as I do in a real life sense). It widens the net and makes us look to other options, as it did in the 2nd half of last season, Hazard aside.

Indeed, this is the other key thing. It's not like Chelsea players are priced like bottom half options, they're priced as champions. They would have to improve 1000 fold to justify those prices.

Those that put Wijnaldum, Janmaat, or Ayoze in their teams ahead of NOR, sun, STO, bou would disagree a little about league position over fixtures.

I would bring in a defender if i needed to; I can't help but see 3/4 clean sheets in their next 6. Even though i agree about how awful they are and how unsurprising every passing result has become.

Azpil would be the only option i would touch. Willian too if he showed any sort of interest in scoring from open play. Those free kicks can't last forever.

Well the Norwich game was a bizarre anomaly, many brought in Mitrovic and Wijnaldum after that and have been rewarded with 1 assist in 3 matches.

If you had started watching football this season, you wouldn't touch a Chelsea defender, they have been shockingly poor. I just can't see many CS regardless of who they play, I've been waiting for them to tighten up for 3 months and they haven't at all, I can't really see them suddenly fixing it.

I agree but would suggest that it is more sensible to jump on Chelsea assets if form changes than the likes of Newcastle and Norwich - therefore you aren't entirely ignoring previous seasons.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 22 days ago

As I just said above, to justify the cost they would need to improve to an extraordinary level. To get a 5m Norwich enabler, you only need the odd assist/CS here and there. Hazard is around 11m, Chelsea defenders are premium - you need title winning form for those prices.

I will try and pick the players that are in form and look like scoring the most points.

If Chelsea start banging in goals and keeping clean sheets I won't ignore them because they are a bit pricey.

I know there are only limited heavy hitter slots but it's not mad to think that Hazard could start outscoring Sanchez if from changes.

Well you're essentially agreeing with me there. To justify, say, Nathan Redmond, you need him to outscore those in his bracket and get enough points per pound. For Hazard, you basically need him to be the top scoring midfielder to justify getting him. That would require a huge, huge, huge change in form that simply doesn't look possible.

But the PFA player of the year doesn't play for Norwich & Newcastle. There is obviously enough quality in Chelsea.

There are a few reasons why I am keeping Hazard -

      1. I have lost 0.3 on him so far so any upturn in form will benefit my TV
      2. Chelsea arent hitting the heights of last season however they coming up against the worst defenses in the league.
      3. Despite missing his last two pens I am think Hazard remains the no 1 pen taker
      4. Having watched him in CL (10 min sub app) and against Stoke he did not play badly. On the other hand he got an assist (CL) and had the second most shots from mids last GW.

i'm with you. I'm actually bringing in Hazard.
        1. I can afford to do so.
        2. Not going to hurt me to bad if it doesn't pan out.
        3. I've got a forward line of Kane-Lukaku-Vardy so I'm not rushing to bring back Aguero. But I can easily change it round if I have to by downgrading Hazard and upgrading a forward.
        4. He is a genuine differential when you take out the dead teams.
        5. If he works out gives me another genuine captaincy option - probably have too many with my frontline & Sanchez & KDB.

Don't see any possible Chelsea players i would want atm:

      - Costa : always a risk of a red card and doesn't get bps if he only scores 1 goal, can get much cheaper forwards who are actualy in form
      - Hazard : i think at best he'll get to last year FPL form, and that is goal or asist per game, don't see him scoring hattricks or getting 15+ hauls, and for his price thats not good enough
      - Willian : he can't score FK every game
      - Pedro : think i don't need to say anything
      - Fabregas : like the whole team, looking bad on the picth and could be loosing his place in team
      - Oscar, Ramires, : not nailed, otherwise would be worth a gamble considering price
      - GK and defence : overpriced for current form, can be considered if Che show signs of improvement

think a defender will be the first viable option, zouma is arguably their biggest attacking threat these days anyway as absurd as that sounds.
sorry but willian makes me a cringe a bit when i see him, he seems to look good now because all those around him look bad, doesn't stop him being a virtually non-existent threat though. actually take ramires more seriously than him. easy to forget even though chelsea won the league last season they were really struggling to score in the 2nd half of the season, they were being called a one-man team because if hazard didnt make something happen they wouldn't score, they got away with it as the clean sheets meant they only needed 1

last season, Man Utd had 3 wins in first 10 games in LVG's first season.

and they went on a run of 7 wins 3 draws in the next 10 since November.

form can change very fast, quality remains, I have faith.

Do you think that if Jose finally manages to land 1 or 2 of his summer targets in January they'll turn their season around?

    The likes of Stones, Marquinhos...

Hard to think that Jose will let this rot carry on and just throw cash to stop the bleeding!

Can they get Stones though? Everton have already resisted over the summer - not sure why anything would change in January unless Chelsea come in with a bid of 50+ which seems silly.

They have enough money to get it done, but is it worth it? Probably better to just look elsewhere.

I do think bringing in some new exciting players might just give the lift they need. Certainly a defensive one at least or someone that can put the ball in the net

stones is a long term investment which could very well be worth it. Especially if he be the successor to Terry.

Agreed, it's easy to disregard when that much money is being splashed out on a youngster. In hindsight, how much of a bargain was 30 odd mil for Rio Ferdinand back in the day?

Well, need some suggestions from your side people. What would you do with this squad?

    DDG-McCarthy
    Moreno-Bellerin-Sagna-Dier-Francis
    Sanchez-Sterling-Coutinho-Mahrez-Westwood
    Pelle-Kane-Martial

Have 1 FT and 1.2 in the bank. I'm looking to get Aguero after Liverpool. So should I save or any other transfers?
