England claw back a two-goal deficit as Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy inspire an unlikely England comeback in Berlin. Jack Butland’s role in that win is curtailed as Stoke City and his 27% Fantasy Premier League ownership wait on news on a potential ankle ligament injury…

Butland’s Night Wrecked By Ankle Injury

Stoke City’s Jack Butland was stretchered off at the end of the first half against Germany with an ankle injury. Post-match reports have suggested that the Potter’s stopper may have suffered ligament damage, with Roy Hodgson confirming that Butland’s setback will be assessed….

“It’s an ankle injury but we don’t know the extent. When you’re talking about ligaments, there’s always some kind of worry but we’ll assess him.”

The Scout Says: Given that he’s the highest owned (27%) Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper, Butland now looks destined to suffer significant sales with is current 5.4 price tag set to plummet. Despite a superb season as the Stoke number one, Butland was already looking vulnerable for the season run-in given current form (one clean sheet in nine outings) and Stoke’s testing schedule (SWA, liv, TOT, mci). More significantly, he seems destined to give way to double Gameweek 34 signings once Wildcards are in play. With Joe Hart and Petr Cech yet to return to the fray, Butland’s injury would likely promote interest in Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet, Everton’s Joel Robles and Manchester United’s David de Gea as the choice options between the sticks for the coming weeks. Despite this, prior to Butland’s injury scare, he was acquired by more FPL managers heading into Gameweek 32 than any other keeper (21,212).

Kane and Vardy Fire Warning Shots

A pair of superbly taken goals by Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy steered England to an unlikely comeback. The Leicester striker’s sublime flick represented his first goal in six starts in all competitions, while Kane’s accurate drive was his sixth strike in his last five starts. Dele Alli failed to find the net for England but shimmered throughout and was arguably England’s most impressive performer.

The Scout Says: The performances of Kane, Vardy and Alli on the international stage underlines that fact that the decision to maximise double Gameweek 34 acquisitions comes packaged with significant risk. Together with Riyad Mahrez, these established FPL assets enjoy favourable Gameweek 35 home fixtures with Spurs hosting West Brom and Leicester facing Swansea. Given the motivation and confidence, the decision to shed all four appears to represent a major gamble.

Ozil Assists As Germany Cave In

While England’s comeback stole the headlines, Mesut Ozil played his part for Germany on the night, laying on the assist for Toni Kroos’ opener.

The Scout Says: Following a run of three consecutive league blanks, Ozil has suffered significant sales with almost 58,000 opting to show the playmaker the door in the current Gameweek. That has seen his ownership slip to 43% with his price dropping to 9.7 having stood at 10.0 back in Gameweek 29. However, with Arsenal facing three home fixtures in the next three Gameweeks (WAT, whm, CPL/WBA), Ozil’s stock is on the rise. With a points per game average (6.2) that’s second only to Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez and far superior to team-mate Alexis Sanchez (4.7), the German sits atop our Watchlist rankings heading into a spell that will decide Arsenal’s participation in the title race.

Dembele Injury Scare For Spurs

Mousa Dembele trained for Belgium amid reports that he’s suffered a flare-up of an ankle complaint. Dembele will likely be assessed again prior to the friendly with Portugal on Tuesday.

The Scout Says: Tottenham will be concerned that these latest reports could lead to a further absence for Dembele. The classy midfielder has established himself as a key component of their title challenge, not least for his apparent impact on the role and output of both Dele Alli and Harry Kane. The Belgian recently missed Gameweeks 16, 20, 27 and 28 through injury, during which time Alli and Kane recorded just a single goal between them. Those seeking to hold the Spurs pairing will be keenly monitoring Dembele’s fitness in light of this recent report.

Mane Maintains Recent Form

Sadio Mane followed up his brace of goals against Liverpool in Gameweek 31 by providing both assists as Senegal beat Niger 2-0.

The Scout Says: Mane’s spurt of goals and assists typifies a player who has proved a hugely frustrating Fantasy asset this term. Priced at 7.3 in the FPL, the winger has struggled to cement his Southampton starting role but could now be granted further minutes as Ronald Koeman bids to revive the Saints’ attacking threat. Southampton’s next four fixtures (lei, NEW, eve, avl) could offer strong potential for returns, yet the absence of a double Gameweek serves as a major deterrent and will likely ensure that Mane continues to be largely ignored as an FPL option.

Niasse On the Scoresheet

Oumar Niasse notched for Senegal as they ran out winners in their African Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Scout Says: Niasse’s strike will send a message to Roberto Martinez and could see the attacker edge closer to his first Premier League start. Classified as a 6.5 forward, Niasse has so far been limited to just 18-minutes off the bench in Gameweeks 29 and 30. While he is unlikely to appeal as a target, Niasse’s impact on the pitch time of Everton’s other attacking options requires consideration. The Toffees will endure nine fixtures over the remaining seven Gameweeks, with double fixtures in Gameweeks 33, 34 and 37 ensuring that we’ll see rotation at play. Certainly, those Fantasy managers intrigued by the differential prospects of Aaron Lennon (four goals and one assist in six) will be wary of Niasse, Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas curtailing his pitch-time. As such, Ross Barkley appears to represent the most secure accompaniment to Romelu Lukaku, yet the fact he’s only delivered attacking returns (brace against Newcastle United) in one of his last 10 starts is a concern for would-be investors.

    I was all set on Mitrovic for a punt during their double, but now Deeney has decent fixtures following the rest of the season, 2 doubles, Villa and Sunderland, on penalties, and club captain, so he has had his rest?

    I know Watford are nearly safe but I'm thinking better player and better team?

      You have only listed the pros with Deeney. The cons are that Watford don't have much to play for as a lower middle team. They are also through to the FA-semis and will focus their energy on this tournament. Watford have played poorly recently and they also look tired. I think this is because of their slim squad and exhausting style of play. I don't want Deeney or any Watford player for the rest of the season, only the Villa game looks like a plum fixture. In the other fixtures they will play teams that have a lot to play for!

    I can legitimate dropping Kane because of his expensive price, because it enables a really strong mid and defence. But dropping someone like Mahrez is waay harder and probably very stupid. Mahrez is by far the best player in the FPL and will most certainly continue to get hauls. I've seen a lot of WCs with Barkley instead of Mahrez, and that's a mad risk to take! I can come up with a loads of arguments why Barkley and Everton will be a bad investment. Quality before quantity!

      This

      He is the one exception to double game week fever. Harry kills your midfield and I can't believe I'm seeing teams with spurs or Leicester defenders in. That seems a bit odd.

        Simpson at 4.2 is sensible imo. Leicester's fixtures are Sunderland (A), WH (H), Swansea (H) across GW 33-35. They have had the best defensive record in the league over the past few months, and gambling on defences with poor records just because they play twice is a little non-nonsensical, especially in squads which leave poor options for 33 and 35. I expect that last season has really influenced this season's wildcards, but in a few weeks there will likely be some regret over dropping consistent scorers for long shots.

        Yeah. I agree about Spurs defenders, although Leicester defenders still make outstanding value. For example, I got Simpson at 3,9, and I think it's hard to pick a defender in his price class or slightly above that will outscore him in those fixtures (sun, WHU, SWA).

        Aside from Arsenal and Man Utd which DGW defences are really worth investing in? Man City and Liverpool maybe, but United/City/Liverpool all offer rotation headaches.

        In isolation GW34 doubles are great compared to the single gameweeks of Leicester and particularly Spurs. When you factor in West Ham, Watford, Palace, United and Everton don't play in GW35 and throw in the opponents of Watford, West Ham and United in 33 it lessens their appeal. West Brom have 4 games in 3 GWs but they're away at City, Arsenal and Tottenham.

        Leicester's matches vs Sunderland, West Ham and Swansea look more appealing to me given their defensive record in recent times. Give me Simpson at 4.3 over Ake/Dawson etc.

      I think Kane is a more dangerous player not to own than Mahrez. Problem is that Kane's price tag limits the funds available to the rest of your wildcard whereas Mahrez is much easier to keep.

        Yeah I don't think there is an equal striker alternative to Kane during the DGWs, but as you say Kane really limits your midfield and that's why I think dropping Kane really could be worth it.

    Afternoon all, I've got myself a bit of a midfield conundrum for my GW33 WC! For a number of reasons (middling TV, desire to keep Kane), I'm unable to fit in all the big hitters in midfield.

    I've got 24.5m for 3 midfielders and am looking for a combination of Arsenal, West Ham and Liverpool midfielders. Can anyone come up with the best combination of these?

    Alexis, Coutinho/Firmino, Lanzini?
    Ozil, Milner, Payet?

    Or some other combination?

        Mahrez is going nowhere from my team! Mainly because I'm not very risky and he'll keep a large ownership.

        I'm also keen on Barkley for his double double.

        Ozil, Payet, Lanzini is an option, though it would lead to another hit in GW35. Any of the Liverpool picks good come good or fail, so I could forego them totally.

    Bringing in Bolasie on the GW33 wildcard and then transferring him to a Liverpool mid in GW34 makes sense to me.

    It means you get a DGW in 33 before swapping to a player who has a better DGW34 + GW35.

    Beyond that, it means you avoid having to field a Liverpool mid in the Stoke game (where they're very likely to be rotated) and get to wait until after the Dortmund game to commit to one. That extra time and information should mean you have a better handle on which of their mids are likely to feature in the DGW.

    Am I missing anything or does that make total sense?

          • 14 Years

          But presumably you're starting with an extra GW35 blanker in Bolaise rather than just starting with Milner/Firmino, so you're one FT behind.

            Nope, Bolasie would be taking a place that was going to a GW35 blanker anyway. The benefit is being able to pick him for his extra 33 game without worrying about his poor 34 fixtures + not having to pick a Liverpool mid until after they play Stoke and Dortmund. The basic structure of the wildcard stays the same though.

              In that case, you're foregoing a Man U/West Ham/Everton player for Bolasie?

              Could work out, but I'm not convinced he's a better option than the 6-7 players I will have from those teams.

          Plus I would argue that people are too obsessed with avoiding hits atm. A well used hit or two arguably lets you be more creative and effective with your wildcard..

              In GW33? Could happen. Two good fixtures vs one and there's a good chance of your chosen Liverpool mid getting limited minutes. Plus you're not just spending the -4 for that alone, you're also getting to sit out Stoke and Dortmund before deciding which mid to bring in for the DGW.

              My point about hits was more general though. I'm just saying that avoiding them entirely isn't *automatically* the smartest idea.

      It makes sense for sure, although Palace's form, Bolassie point's per game and Everton's away form probably changes things a little. Rotation might also be just as unclear after the Stoke and Dortmund games, and I wouldn't want to beat on Firmino not starting just because he may start against Stoke and Dortmund. I wonder if it might be best to pick the best team and save the transfer for the inevitable injuries/changes and missed fixtures of GW 35 and beyond.

        The rotation situation might not clear up too much but knowing exactly how much game time they each got against Stoke and Dortmund can't hurt our predictions either. Plus that's two games for Firmino (or whoever) to pick up an injury before he gets to the DGW.

    Playing BB on 34, and options are slim for gw37. Maybe Payet or a Liverpool player...

      Stay away from Barkley for now. The idiot Martinez, in an attempt to plug a defence leaking from the wings rather than the middle, has constrained an overrated Barkley a little more. I'd look at only Lukaku and Robles, but perhaps bring Barkley in for Mahrez in 36 when there is a clear fixture change.

    DDG/Elliott
    Bellerin, Dann, Sagna, Fuchs, Lovren/Sakho

    Which of these routes do you think looks best? WCing in GW36.

    A)
    GW32: Eriksen -> Payet
    GW33: Kompany, Arnie & Vardy -> Dann, Barkley & Lukaku (-4)
    GW34: Dann -> Kos
    GW35: Lukaku -> Vardy/Pelle

    B)
    GW32: Eriksen -> Ozil
    GW33: Kompany, Arnie & Vardy -> Ward, Barkley & Lukaku (-4)
    GW34: Wolly -> Rojo
    GW35: Lukaku -> Vardy/Pelle

    C)
    GW32: Eriksen -> Ozil
    GW33: Arnie & Kane -> Barkley & Lukaku
    GW34: Kompany -> Rojo
    GW35: Lukaku -> Kane

    Hennessey, Elliot
    Kompany, Bellerin, Wolly, JEvans, Simpson
    Sanchez, Mahrez, Eriksen, Arnie, Alli
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    Bank 1.3m, 2FT

      Wow…so many options.
      Don't like C has it means no Kane…

      A seems the better plan.

      Ozil - Dann - Kosc most better than Payet - Ward - Rojo

        Cheers, I was actually swaying towards C due to no hits and not being a big fan of CPL defenders for a hit

        The no Kane route is risky but I'd only be losing him for MUN, sto, which on paper at least isn't too easy.

        For A vs B its Payet, Dann & Kos vs Ozil, Ward & Rojo

      The idea of keeping SGW players is, for me, about managing risk more than looking for picks with a lot of potential. Mahrez and Kane have the capacity to hurt me more than Alli does even if Alli outscores them.

    After good hours of changing it I finally think this is it for me - WC this week, Lukaku 3C in DGW33 (and 4 doublers), 14 doublers in DGW34 (keeping Simpson), 2 FTs to get 11 in blank GW35, enough FTs to get 11 doublers in DGW37. Can I get some opinions, please??

    Robles Elliot
    Bellerin Koscielny Rojo Sakho Simpson
    Sanchez Payet Firmino Barkley Bolasie
    Aguero Lukaku Rashford

    Bolasie is my 2-week punt, getting Coutinho in for him in DGW34. Rashford is certainly worth the risk for me, and I'm not keeping Kane or Mahrez as I see more upside with the doublers. In GW35 I'll do Rashford & Rojo > Defoe & PVA, giving me 11 players and the opportunity to also get a full team of doublers in GW37, no hits required.

    Elliot - Robles
    Simpson - Gabriel - Bellerin - Ogbonna - Sakho
    Antonio - Payet - Mata - Ozil - Mahrez
    Aguero - Sturridge - Lukaku

    GW33 - DGW for Lukaku, Robles
    GW34 - BB which gives me 13 DGW players (save transfer)
    GW35 - Lukaku > Kane (save second transfer) gives me 10 starters

    Gwk 35: Lukaku -> Vardy, Bolasie -> Milner. 11 starters

        They'll get a cleanie out of Watford. I have faith in Pulis.
