Steven Gerrard steps up his recovery from an ankle infection. Tony Pulis talks festive rotation, Phil Jagielka heaps praise on Royston Drenthe and Jermain Defoe will play for Spurs in this evening’s Europa League match, much to the delight of Rafael Van der Vaart owners:

Liverpool have this morning revealed Steven Gerrard has made significant progress in his rehabilitation as he recovers from an ankle infection. The Reds skipper hasn’t featured since gameweek 9 due to the problem and with Lucas sidelined for the season with a knee injury, his return is more crucial than ever. Although the club have refused to put a timescale on his comeback, with Gerrard returning to light training last week, it’s perhaps not too far away. Kenny Dalglish admitted:

Steven is progressing and training really well. Everybody is delighted with his progress, so that is positive as well. We’ll wait and see. We won’t set any targets for Sunday that we won’t reach. When he’s ready he’ll be ready. It’s fantastic for him that he’s progressing as well as he is and great for us as well.

Last night’s news from the Tottenham camp ahead of their Europa League clash with Shamrock Rovers this evening was intriguing for Fantasy managers. Harry Redknapp confirmed that Jermain Defoe will play, with owners of Rafael Van der Vaart feeling a little more positive ahead of the weekend game against Sunderland. Defoe’s participation certainly suggests that Redknapp will continue with the Dutchman alongside Emmanuel Adebayor for the Black Cats visit on Sunday.

Fulham have been handed a blow with the news that Mark Schwarzer is set for a spell on the sidelines with a neck injury. Fulham’s official website has confirmed that the Australian goalkeeper has a compression to his thoracic spine which occurred against Swansea and will be unavailable for 4-6 weeks. The Cottagers have recalled David Stockdale from his loan spell at Ipswich- he should be available for selection for their home game against Bolton on Saturday. Young goalkeeper Neil Etheridge deputized between the sticks last night for Fulham in their Europa League clash with Odense.

Blackburn Rovers are in the middle of a mini-injury crisis, with the fitness of Martin Olsson, Gael Givet and Michel Salgado all being monitored ahead of their home game against West Brom. Steve Kean has been handed a timely boost, with Jason Lowe declaring himself fit for the weekend. Lowe left the game on Sunday after a sustaining a head injury, but insists:

As far as I’m aware I’ll be up for selection, training and looking forward to the game. I felt it to say the least as soon as it had happened, but after a few stitches and a few bruises I’m just getting on with it.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is optimistic that midfield duo David Edwards and Matt Jarvis will both overcome knocks to be available for their vital home game against Stoke. The pair have been first-team fixtures of late but picked up groin and thigh injuries respectively in the defeat at Man United. Big Mick added that Jody Craddock and Kevin Foley are both progressing well in their return from injury.

Andy Wilkinson left the field injured after only 28 minutes of Stoke’s Europa League game with Besiktas last night. Wilkinson has only just returned from a back problem and although the prognosis of his latest problem has yet to be revealed, any possible absence may mean a continued role at right-back for Jonathan Woodgate. Tony Pulis rang the changes, with the likes of Matthew Upson, Danny Higginbotham, Asmir Begovic and Jermaine Pennant starting. Pennant’s place in the first XI will be of particular interest to those Fantasy managers eyeing up Ryan Shotton. The latter has started the Potters’ last two league games on the right wing and, given he’s a 4.0 defender, is starting to attract investment. Despite the 3-1 defeat, Pulis was pleased with the run-out many of his squad players managed and admitted:

There are a lot of matches coming up in the next few weeks over Christmas and the New Year and there is no doubt they will be needed.

Antolin Alcaraz could make a swift return from injury against Chelsea on Saturday. The Paraguayan defender was not expected to see action until after the New Year after leaving the field against West Brom with a suspected fractured rib, but Roberto Martinez has said that the centre-half feels good and has put a “51% chance”on him playing. A decision on his fitness is expected to follow within the next 24 hours.

Phil Jagielka has been talking up the abilities of Royston Drenthe ahead of Everton’s home clash with Norwich. The Toffees have now gone two games without a goal and have sorely missed the Dutchman’s presence according to Jagielka, with the on-loan winger currently sidelined due to a foot problem:

Hopefully he can be fit enough to play some part in the next two games. He gives us that bit of flair and spark so hopefully he can play a big part and score a couple or set up a couple over the next couple of weeks. It’s hard to know where he is going to pop up but we need that unpredictability because sometimes it’s been a bit too easy to mark us. Offensively he adds a massive threat with his ability, his pace and his shooting.

Sean Davis and Sam Ricketts both turned out for Bolton’s reserves yesterday as they stepped up their recoveries from injury. Davis hasn’t played for 27 months after extensive knee surgery, while Ricketts has been sidelined with a ruptured Achilles. Owen Coyle received more good news, with Chung-yong Lee making good progress from a broken leg suffered in pre-season. The Trotters boss, while clearly delighted, admitted that the South Korean’s return is still a long way down the line.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed he expects Michael Essien to return to action again in mid-January. The Ghanaian has yet to appear this season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in pre-season training and the Blues boss is confident of a comeback in a month’s time:

We’re looking at mid-January, that’s the best we can think about. There was a setback at the beginning of December if I’m not wrong which took him back 10 days and that’s extended into January, so I don’t think he will go to the African Cup of Nations.

My ingenious idea of bringing him in after the United match didn't quite work. So no, but I'd be curious how Liverpool would line up with him in their first XI, and look at their other players.

I keep exchanging Ward and Jose Enrique in my starting 11.

I am going to play two out of these four:
    Simpson (vs. SWA)
    Walters (vs. wol)
    Jose Enrique (vs. avl)
    Ward (vs. STO)

Close call. Apart from 'always go with your gut', what is the general concensus on what to do in such situations - Would you rather go with the better team or the home game?
    Thanks.

From what I've read on the Everton forum, a local newspaper and now Jagielka I expect Drenthe to come off the bench vs. Norwich and start vs. Swans.
He's been training all week but lacking match fitness apparently. That said the opinion also seems to be that they need him back to offer any threat.

Well you've already invested too much in defence, imo. You could get in a cheap defender for Walker and upgrade Enrique to Baines.

My assumption is that anyone who is able to get in Baines this week would naturally want to do that. These next two GWs offers Baines the best chance yet of a high return.

But I understand your not wanting to put so much cash in a single defender.

I am not 100% sure, but not worth the risk, and I think Gower is a better (and cheaper) pick anyway, at 4.5 and averaging an assist every 2 games, cant ask for more than that.

Slightly controversial opinion but i would try to strengthen the midfield, have 4 solid players you happy to play each week and i really dont think silva is worth it especially over the christmas period, just too much rotation, playing toure would be better he has played the full 90 in every game this season, and given how much goals are spread around at city anyway doesnt really matter who you have just as long as they play every week. i would then use the extra money to change moses, wigan got a really tough run of games coming up, so not expecting huge returns from him, potentially switch to someone like Walters.

I like the strikers, defense is fairly solid, i would potentially look at trying to get some chelsea cover in with the remainder of the cash you free up from silva, they have been looking a lot more solid recently, think its 3 clean sheets in 5, about the best in the league atm i would have thought.

Keepers are ok, potentially could look at getting in Stockdale, mark is out for 6 weeks and fulham now out of europe so wont be as jaded and historically good defensively. Could be good bargin, although i dont know how much he costs wouldnt have thought a lot though and would probably have taken ruddy out for him, i like westwood.

I assume that first comma was accidental, otherwise my advice is go back to school.

Personally I think Rooney is a waste of money in your team; other than that the team looks fine for the weekend. Switching Rooney for Ade would put you in a very large boat, so switching for Aguero would be more interesting.

I might even bring in Hennesy for Ruddy as I could afford this but think it would just be a waste.

Just out of annoyance - I was all set to get him before his double pointer but didnt go through with it, got him in for his last 2,2 performances. I suppose its a bit harsh, De Laet or Wilkinson can take that slot.

Just failed to live up to expectations I suppose - kept doubling up with Given for easy looking games and then was left bitterly disappointed week after week.

I bought into the 'McLeish will keep it tight' hype too much and it took me too long to engineer an escape route! My defence still hasn't recovered!

I subbed Rooney for Torres when Man beat Arsenal 8-2, Chelsea had Norwich at home I think that week and Torres did nothing, Man U produced the most surprising result going. My league rivals had Rooney (C) and Young, beating me by 80+ points. After an angry few GWs of transfers I was left stranded at the bottom of my league. Now 6 green arrows running but its a longggg way back haha.

    Hello

Please can you give some advice?

    My team is:

    Vorm (Westwood)

    Richards, Jones, baines (Simpson, Gabbidon)

    Silva, Bale, VDV, Moses (dyer)

    Yakabu, RVP, Adebayor

I have one FT and 0.6m in the bank?

What do you think I should do?

I was thinking of doing nani in for vdv?

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Baines Enrique BAE P.Jones (3:Simpson)
Silva Nani Dyer (1:Ramsey 2: PIlkington)

VDV is a great captain choice, especially now Defoe is playing tonight.

Aguero is the best City coverage, season keeper if you have him.

Im playing Enrique, i would be wary of having 3 Liverpool defenders but Agbonlahor is suspended...

Fulham are definetly the ones for me. I reckon when i wildcard ill have probably 2/3 defenders/goalkeeper and maybe Dempsey. The best team i found to go with them in terms of a team actually capable of cleanies is Stoke or Swansea.

Their isnt really any brilliant rotations till the end of the season from what i can see. Villa/Stoke & Newcastle/Sunderland obviously still rotate well in terms of home and away but none of them have really played many of the big sides at home.

If it makes you feel any better:

      I am:
      playing Enrique
      keeping VDV (vc)
thinking how to get Aguero in by GW 17
      keeping Drenthe
      going to captain Baines. Maybe...

Look at the latest tweet, i'd almost forgotten about 'The Unit' Imagine this:

    ------Romeu------
    Ramires--Essien

Essien playing an attacking role where he is at his best. Decent.

I'd just worry if there's enough creativity in that midfield, especially against the lesser sides who'll sit deep and you'd need an incisive pass to get through.

I wonder if the plan is for him to play right back...........

Really? I thought he was at his best when Lampard was out of the side and he played in a more attacking role. At Lyon he was an attacking midfielder and was terrific. You've got Mata for creativity.

Yeah, but one creative player isn't always enough. If he's thwarted then we're relying on Sturridge, Drogba, Ramires and Essien who are much more functional relying on pace and power.

AVB won't change from his preferred formation of 4-3-3, so Mata will continue to take up a nominal position on the left, although obviously he'll drift all over the place causing havoc.

Also re lack of creativity, surely that would be better than Romeu, Ramires and Lampard? Although Lampard looks to have lost his place now anyway.

Probably, but it's not better than Romeu - Ramires Meireles.

Lampard still has a role to play, although a lot of people have been saying we should 'save him up for the big games', a bit like Giggs - which is exactly what we shouldn't do. It's in the big games where he's completely non-existent, unable to cope with the intensity of the games. He should play in the easier games as far as I'm concerned, and I'd imagine he'll get a start against Wigan on Saturday.

....where he'll undoubtedly score, because Wigan are shit (sorry Roberto), and everyone will be clamouring for him to get back in the team again. Can't wait!

Haha. I said on here earlier he shouldn't be there for the big games, he looked a liability against the bigger teams so I am not surprised AVB benched him the last few games..

Sturridge would be shocking down the middle. His best position is on the wing. Hulk is over rated, Lavezzi would be good though, works hard.

                Affelay (is he still injured?)

I was speaking strictly fantasy with Sturridge down the middle 8)
I gotta sort of disagree with Hulk, he is overrated, but is still a good player IMO, he gets talked up more than he should, but is still a great player.
Shaqiri looked excellent last game I saw him.

Can I just warn everyone off Virgin Internet? We moved into Brixton recently and decided to ditch Sky and go for Virgin. The internet is utter sh*te as I can't reliably stream any football, and their customer service is highly frustrating. the entire experience has got me really angry, and I'm looking to breaking the contract and getting with someone better.

That's an interesting comment. I have BT's Vision package, which works pretty well and comes with 'Player' access (iPlayer, 4oD etc) and HD recoder box, plus downloadable films and TV series (for a price).

But think carefully, break-clauses are usually pretty steep.

Yes, I need to go through Ofcom as I don't feel I should have to pay to break the contract. There service is completely not up to scratch. I'm paying for 30mbs but getting less than 5 most of the time, and, even worse, it cuts out all the time. I'm documenting how rubbish it is.

Thanks mate, but it's not the wireless connection. I get full strength on the wireless setting. We rang Virgin a few weeks ago and they said there's a problem in our local area and that it would take 2 weeks. After 2 weeks no change, so called them again and they said another 2 weeks. I was really pi55ed off the other night having to listen to the ChelseaCity match on the radio (not even through Beeb online, internet not good enough, but through my TV!). I have my mate's sky password so would usually watch it all for free. This is just killing me!

Just realised that Everton have failed to keep a CS in every home game this season and 3 of those games were vs Wolves, Wigan and QPR.

I think I'll leave off bringing in Jagielka for now, even if they do have 2 very winnable games coming up.

Alternatives are Evans, Walker, BAE in my budget. But with Evans it'll mean doubling with Jones, which I'm not sold on, or Walkrer/BAE taking up my 3rd Spurs slot, which I'm still leaving for VDV.

I'm not sure there's a need this GW with Krul / Simpson / Enrique / Jones at the back with Ward 1st sub.

'Schweinsteig' isn't the greatest name either, mind you - it means 'pigsty'. So 'Schweinsteiger' = 'pigsty man'.

Few names are as powerful as this unfortunate German lower-league player – he sounds like the painful result of an Iraqi missile strike:

Sebastian Larsson is quite a cool/strong name. Wesley Sneijder's also pretty awesome - although that's more spidery than powerful.

I have 2 free transfers and 0.9 in the bank.

    Vorm/Given

    Brown/Rangel/Kompany/Enrique/Simpson

    Silva/Ramires/Dyer/Walters/M.Petrov

    RVP/Rooney/Ba

Think I need to improve my midfield...
