After Everton defeated West Ham 2-0 at Goodison earlier, we now turn our attentions to St Mary’s as Southampton entertain Chelsea at 4pm.

Diego Costa and Eden Hazard boast the greatest threat as the Blues look to grab a fourth successive league win.

The Spain international – who remains one yellow away from a single-match ban – has netted four goals in as many road trips, whilst Hazard has notched in each of his last four starts for club and country.

Chelsea’s recent move to 3-4-3 has harvested three straight clean sheets in the top-flight, though their hosts have been similarly resilient in front of their own fans.

The Saints have conceded just one goal in their last five home matches in all competitions and have been breached on only eight occasions over the first nine Gameweeks.

With a trip to Hull next up on their agenda, Nathan Redmond and Charlie Austin have the chance to stake a claim for our consideration, as the latter looks to net for the third successive league outing.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Late to Jonty's hot topic about changing defense but I'd like to share my opinion. I do not agree Spurs and Arsenal defenders should be dropped yet and certainly not for Bournemouth or Boro defenders. My reasoning:

    1) Arsenal and Spurs are fixture proof defensive-wise. Spurs kept a CS against City and Arsenal against Chelsea for example. The NLD could be a goal fest but it can also be very tight. 1 of the 2 sides getting a CS wouldn't surprise me. These two have by far the best defense in the league.

    2) Arsenal and Spurs still have very good fixtures coming up. I believe when you invest in a premium defender, you look more long term than with cheap options so you take a 5-6 GW window rather than 2-3. Arsenal's next 6 are TOT, mun, BOU, whm,STO,eve. The 2 home games after the NLD look like guaranteed CSs. Utd and Westham on current attacking form can be CSs as well. 4 CSs out of 6 is very possible which is good enough. Spurs's next 6 are ars, WHM, che, SWA, mun, HUL. 3 great home fixtures and an away game to Utd can easily be CSs so also 4 out of 6 CSs is a good shout. Add to that the attacking and baps potential of Koscielny,Bellerin and Walker (the most popular options). There could still be a lot of points there.

    3) Boro's next 6 fixtures are dreadful apart from the Hull home game in GW 14. Bournemouth are solid at home but very leaky away from home. In their next 6 fixtures, only Sunderland is an easy home game. The other 2 home fixtures are Liverpool and Leceister so CSs are very unlikely.

My conclusion would be if you have Arsenal and Spurs defenders, definitely keep. If you don't, maybe wait and assess based on the results of the next 2 GWs.Offloading Everton, City and Utd defenders is a bigger priority before considering offloading Spurs and Arsenal defenders. If I was shopping for defenders, I'd look at Leceister, Burnley and WBA. Soton and Chelsea are ones to monitor as they still have some tough fixtures coming up. Chelsea though look very impressive defensively.

Disagree - because I think the value is with the midfielders and forwards this season - largely because Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea have no European football. With Aguero and Sanchez being fixture proof / FPL stars then you have to save the money somewhere. With Heaton collecting save points and so many attacking defenders then defence looks the place to save those funds.

Very difficult to have a good GW if your defenders are getting 1s and 2s consistently even if your forwards and mids do well. Walker, Bellerin and Koscielny are capable of 8-9 pts from time to time and even more with a goal or assist. It is much easier to predict their points than the midfielders in the 7-8m range.

Take a look at this gameweek - where were those Spurs and Arsenal clean sheets? Aguero, Lukaku, Costa, Hazard, Sanchez and Coutinho all delivered. Those six are going to be the bedrock of teams this season - only because Coutinho, Lukaku and Costa / Hazard have no European football (i.e. they will play 35 - 38 PL games this season if staying fit). Aguero and Sanchez are just FPL stars (Sanchez is out of position too). With five of those six you will dominate this season.

This GW is a fluke for attacking players. Almost everyone delivered double digits. Look at the 3 or 4 GWs before that. Bellerin, Kosc, Blind, Azpi and Alonso all delivered very well as premium defenders. I have Aguero, Lukaku, Sterling,Firmino, Walcott and Coutinho at the moment and still have Valencia, Walker and Kosc. I can downgrade Valencia and get Hazard for Sterling if I want. That is a very solid team with plenty of captain options. I cannot get Sanchez which could be a problem for me but you cannot have them all.

So what would you recommend as a good template team? I suspect you have a high team value and hence can fit in some premium defenders. Don't get me wrong - last season I had a staple of Kosc and Bellerin in defence (doubled up), but this season feels different. How about:

              Grant - Heaton
              Koscielny - Walker - Blind - Holebas - Amat
              Walcott - Coutinho - Fletcher - Hazard - Firmino
              Costa - Lukaku - Austin

If you have Foster, ignore WBA for the moment. Out of the cheap options, I'd rather double up on Burnley rather than anyone else with Superman Heaton in goal for them. Leceister the best option among the 5-5.5 options.

Why would city be priority to drop if you justify keeping other two because of approx 60% good fixtures.
City have better run of games and will have champ league out the way soon enough

Because they cannot defend 🙂 WBA are just so poor going forward. Still a long way for City in CL too. If they lose to Barca (which I expect them to) and Borussia Gladbach win their game, City must win against Borussia Gladbach in Germany. Looking at City's nect 3 they can keep CSs against Burnley and Boro but still somehow they always manage to concede somehow.

Thanks for posting this ktk. If I don't have an ARS/TOT defender and am looking for Valencia replacement up to 6.3, would you say that Alonso is better than Fuchs long term?

At first I thought Fuchs is better because of his short term fixture and attacking potential, but I am worry of Leicester's defensive form. Chelsea, on the other hand, have 4 consecutive CSs.

Great post! The issue is a lot of us have 5 very expensive premium attacking players that are looking essential in the likes of Liverpool, Costa, aguero, Lukaku, Sanchez and even Hazard also knocking on the door now.

Because of this outlay a lot of us have pretty poor 4th midfielders such as Capoue who we are looking to upgrade. Carrying expensive Spurs and Arsenal defenders as well looks too costly with the fixtures turning and the likes of Leicester and Southampton offering better value for money in defence, an opportunity has arisen to find additional funds to turn our Capoues into Chadlis or Redmonds or Bolasies.

Chelsea have Everton, Spurs and City in the short term. I don't see them keeping CSs in those. Maybe 1 at best. They are flying at the moment but they haven't won in the big tests yet. Beaten by Arsenal and Liverpool comfortably. That was before the formation change though.

Leceister are very solid at home. Their away form is terrible but they also had some tough away matches and the upcoming ones are easy ones. Also, they are about to seal top of the group in CL so they should will probably shift the focus to PL after this week's CL games. I expect Fuchs to do very well in the next 6 GWs.

I was thinking along the same line. Arsenal, Spurs and may be Chelsea will keep the most CS this year, especially at home.

Currently have Kosc and Vert, but monitoring Alonso. I might just bring him in for Vert. Spurs have Champions league, but chelsea are free of all that and are defensively looking solid.

My thoughts too. I've got Kos and Walker. I'm taking the view that these Spuds and ARS will keep the most cs this season. I'm wondering if it's worth booting Valencia for Alonso or a 4.5 like Smith?

I've Kos and Walker too and I'm starting to think that having both really lessens the options im midfield.
Currently I have to play Allen as my 4th mid, so maybe I should downgrade one of them to a cheaper defender as I may want someone like Sigurdsson as my 4th mid soon.

Having Kos, Walker and Valencia/Alonso would be too expensive for me. One of the 4.5 Burnley defenders could be a good pick.
