Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 14

With a home tie against a Swansea City side that has shipped 11 goals in their last four league outings, Harry Kane (10.8) is surely set to be among the front-runners at the top of this week’s Captain poll.

Already subject to more than 28,000 transfers in since Saturday morning, it is clear many Fantasy Premier League managers are already looking to secure the 7.7% owned striker in their squads ahead of this fixture.

His team-mate Christian Eriksen (8.1) could provide an interesting differential for those shunning the Spurs striker. His goal against Chelsea had been long overdue, with the 4.7% owned Dane having more goal attempts than any other midfielder without scoring in the previous four matches.

Even though Chelsea prevailed 2-1 in that encounter, Eriksen’s strike demonstrated that the Blues 3-4-3 formation, which had kept six clean sheets in a row prior to Gameweek 13, can be breached.

This puts 43.9% owned Sergio Aguero (13.1) firmly in the running for a shot at the summit of this week’s poll, when Manchester City welcome Antonio Conte’s troops to the Etihad this weekend.

With a brace and maximum FPL bonus against Burnley on Saturday, the Argentine’s stock has increased markedly since his disappointing blank away to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 12.

His 10.9% owned team-mate Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) was only a substitute at Turf Moor but is expected to start for this top of the table match to present a solid alternative.

In contrast, City’s defence has been poor all season, having kept just two clean sheets. This retains the 43.7% owned Diego Costa (10.6) as a strong contender, having scored or assisted in all bar one of his six away league games this term.

However, it would be a surprise to see 32.8% owned Eden Hazard (10.2) feature highly, having recorded just the one goal and a single assist on this travels, and with blanks in his last two Gameweeks.

Like Aguero, Alexis Sanchez (11.3) was another premium player to serve up a brace in Gameweek 13, during Arsenal’s 3-1 home victory over Bournemouth.

The Chilean travels to a West Ham side that also suffers frailties in defence, conceding five goals in their last four home encounters. Meanwhile, the 22.7% owned midfielder, who continues to be fielded as a central striker by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, has scored five of his eight goals on the road.

Despite a six-game scoring drought earlier this season, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.1) has remained a popular captaincy choice, with 13.01% of FPL managers handing him the armband in Gameweek 13.

He rewarded them with a goal and maximum bonus at home to West Ham, which could yet see him figure highly in this week’s poll, ahead of a trip to Goodison Park. The Toffees have failed to keep a clean sheet since Gameweek 10 and will be low on confidence after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat away to Southampton.

Philippe Coutinho’s likely absence this weekend through injury, when Liverpool travel to Bournemouth, leaves Roberto Firmino (8.8) and Sadio Mane (9.2) as the key captaincy contenders among the Reds’ ranks.

Of the two, the Brazilian has the edge over his Senegalese team-mate on the road, in terms of both shooting accuracy and chance creation.

Firmino took a knock at the end of  Saturday’s 2-0 home victory over Sunderland but is expected to be fit in time for the weekend.

Sunderland’s hosting of a Leicester City side which has conceded a joint league high 16 goals on their travels, presents the poll with a duo of differential armband options.

Seven goals this campaign has taken 19% owned Jermaine Defoe (7.5)’s FPL points tally to 74, just one behind Aguero, making him a strong contender in this week’s vote.

Considering the porous nature of the Foxes’ defence, Defoe’s cut-price team-mate Victor Anichebe (4.6) also emerges as an intriguing option. The 3.2% owned Nigerian has scored three goals in as many games since breaking into the Black Cats first XI earlier this month.

Joining Leicester with 16 goals conceded away from home is Hull City, which offers the chance for Alvaro Negredo (6.2) to garner votes when the Tigers visit Middlesbrough. Against the Foxes at the weekend he served up a brace, his first league goals since Gameweek 1.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Is Pedro a good option to replace cout?
Already have firm, sig and haz but can't afford wallcot.

    Options are
    A Pedro
    B Walcott for -4

This is doing my head in!

Having a similar battle. As a Hazard owner, I think getting Pedro may be too much (for this weekend at least) - so may be worth a short term punt move instead

Cheers man. I agree that haz and Pedro is overkill but the budget options are not too good. Might just take that hit.

My view on Ericksen is that he is a Barkley. That means he is incosistent and soft, both in reality as well as in FPL. Good luck though. I think you should get rid of Morgan at some point. And in general i prefer Costa from Haz. Otherwise a nice team, very similar to mine

I'm not sure if that is OK or not to be honest. 10 games covers several seasons no? How many games did he blank in? He could have got that haul in 2-3 games meaning he's blanked in 7-8?

It's good. But then there is the likes of Lukaku scoring 7 games in a row against West Ham! Or Sanchez scoring every games against Hull. Or Costa scoring every game against Everton.

There are historic scores that can almost be a guaranteed point haul. That said Hazard used to love scoring against Spurs until he stopped this GW.

Cheers for the prompt though BB-8.

Big fan of any possible historic patterns that could be combined with good current day stats – Sometimes reveals a possible armband pick. Certainly food for thought. I liked the Eriksen one on the previous page, but he is flakey at best that guy. One goal only this season!

Not as a 4th mid, better options out there for the same price as a 5th.

I'm thinking a straight swap to Eriksen if its serious? Somewhat differential, having said that Kane is a differential in himself at the moment with c 10% ownership.

Finding it hard to not have City cover. De Bruyne is frustrating as is Sterling.

If I wasn't bothered about City I would do Aguero to Kane & Coutinho to Eriksen this week (2 FT's) then next week Shaq to Siggy.

What do we think might be the cause of Walcott's downturn in stats Since Boro (h) ?

3 home fixtures including Boro themselves, Bournemouth and Spurs. United game was tough for Arsenal granted but they've decreased quite a bit on average compared to first 8 fixtures.

Are the upcoming fixtures good enough to turn it around? West Ham (a), Stoke (h), Everton (a), Man City (a)

but he has been in previous seasons, so we couldn't expect it to last forever. If he was super consistent he'd be priced accordingly.

One of the reasons he hasn't been consistent though is because he hasn't had a regular place in the starting XI.

Often referred to as "FPL gold" when he's in the team.

He tends to do well when we score a lot. Alexis' stats dried off a bit in those games too. Next 2 maybe 3 can have a lot of goals. After gw 17 it's absolutely beautiful

Ozil, Sanchez and Walcott's stats have mostly decreased since Cazorla went out the team but Walcott's is probably the most dramatic

I remember Jonty posting an article a while back about how Bellerin creates the space for Walcott. The article was about Arsenal playing like they did with Bergkamp.

It's not just a Walcott thing I don't think. Doing a team comparison of Arsenal GW1-8 vs Arsenal GW9-13 shows a team slide in stats.

Haven't taken the time to investigate more thoroughly than this though!

Is a team thing but out of the 3 main attackers - Ozil, Sanchez and Walcott, it's Theo's stats who have dropped off the most. Did he that minor injury too

Is Bellerin in line to do a Snodgrass and return in 2 weeks instead of the annoying 6 reported that caused me to ship him out for a hit and lose 14 points in the process. Argh. /rant.

At least Ibra was fit. I had all intention of holding on to Snodgrass for 7-8 fixtures. Phelan and gang came out saying he's gone for 6 weeks blah blah. FPL had him out for 4-6 weeks. Next thing I read after shipping him out the following week is that he's in light training and will be on the bench. To make things worse, useless Sterling whom I transferred him to was rotated by Pep, and Snodgrass came on for 14. I lost 18 points there.

Think it's time to use my wildcard before prices rise again.

Will have to lose Koscielny unless I get Anichibe instead of Austin.

Think Koscielny to Lovren and Deeney to Austin instead of keeping Koscielny and settling for Anichibe instead is the better move, no?

Thinking Valdes or Pickford personally. Don't want to be left in a position where I have no playing GK again, and Jaku is useless backup.

Problem with Pickford is that it might lead to that situation re-occurring, and I don't exactly think I'll be getting much from Sunderland in terms of CS pts

I'm most likely bringing in one of Kane/Eriksen this week, even if I do this I can't get away from Defoe (C), so far this season I've had awful luck with captaincy (Aguero peno miss -2, Cout this week).

    What could go wrong? DEFOEEEEEE

I would wait a week, even then would you get rid of him before Swansea away?

I have more pressing issues so he stay's for me, not sure where I would stand if my team was perfect though. Luxury transfer but Defoe also has the form and for the next 4 weeks three decent fixtures. After that I'll be shipping.

Will casuals somehow find this GWs standout player to own (Kane) or will his ownership remain sub 10 %? If he gets a hat-trick as the captain we will se ridic rises in ranking. The last time I made a decent captain choice I went from 600k to 100k (Luka in GW4).

Anyone else feel like they destroying there team to get Kane in?

Need to take Deeney and Coutinho out

    A) Kane + Philips -4 no funds left
    B) Defoe + Siggy -4 can upgrade one defender to Rose/Walker next week
    C) Defoe + Eriksen 0.6m left

Which option will get me most points say in the next 4?
