Goals and assists in the pre-season friendlies sparked much debate among the community over the past week, as two notable big -hitters showed their class to get the locals chattering.

We look back over those notable discussions in our review of the week’s Hot Topics, while also highlighting another set of articles from two regular scribes.

We also bring news of an exciting – and rather epic – new community tournament.

The Community Articles

The player ownership debate was once again all the rage this week, with Red Arrows setting the agenda with his hugely acclaimed Hot Topic, a discussion which followed hot on the heels of a new updated article from Milvus which scans the current movers and shakers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) market.

Elsewhere, we saw a debut community article from YTFC_Scratch who offered us insight into his own struggle between trusting his emotions and gut instincts next to putting faith in mathematical algorithms such as our own Rate My Team. A great new addition to our community contributors, look out for more from Scratch next week.

Finally, our resident Draft game expert Pav A Nice Day has delivered once again, providing another essential guide that breaks down his top ten tips for Draft Day. This is his third article submitted this summer and follows on from his perfect player list.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

That lauded thread from Red Arrows was one of many key discussions that took place this week, with big ticket Fantasy assets hogging the attention.

Ironically, we’d already laid the groundwork for what was to come by asking you how much credence you put on pre-season form and how it influences your decision-making.

It didn’t end there, with this Hot Topic from The Fantasy Freak also pre-empting events and discussions to come. He asked whether we were overlooking Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso and, just two days later and following a goal against Bayern Munich, that subject resurfaced.

First, Rupert The Horse provided some vital analysis of the Blues wing-back. Then we asked if, even with his price of 7.0, Alonso was back in the game and returning to our initial squad line-ups.

Then it was Kevin De Bruyne’s turn to shine. His stellar performance and two assists in Manchester City’s stunning 4-1 victory over Real Madrid opened our eyes, once again, to the Belgian’s appeal and we swooped to chair the discussion. That extended later in the week with AceK1ght’s excellent post on the potential routes into Pep Guardiola’s stellar attack.

Following that, Kuntheman offered his views on City’s likely line-up and our options for navigating their notorious rotation policy. Meanwhile, IMember chose to focus purely on the debate raging over the City strikers, underlining his view that “Pep loves Jesus”.

Away from City, Distinctly Average was anything but with his superb post that examined our midfield options, confessing that he was troubled by the array of options on offer. Deulofail then followed up by suggesting that we were being blinded by the cast of 7.0 candidates.

Switching to the strikers, AceKn1ght returned with another popular post on the merits of West Ham United’s new capture Javier Hernandez – a player we know well and who seems perfectly suited to the role of third striker in 3-4-3 setups.

“Little Pea” offers potential, a word which sums up Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford. Overshadowed by new team-mate Romelu Lukaku, Forever Mirin certainly made a strong case to us to consider the starlet striker in his midweek Hot Topic.

While that pair are both prospects for next season, Spurs’ Harry Kane is undoubtedly a proven commodity and yet Aggero was on hand to draw our attention to the fact that pundits have claimed that the striker will be unable to sustain his scoring form. It’s fair to say that I, and many others, were not ready to accept such a theory.

Finally, and on a lighter note perhaps, this fabulous post from 1569Tippins describes a nightmarish scenario that might just haunt other experienced Fantasy managers. Tippins describes how he’s been refused entry to his work’s cash league on the grounds of his expertise, with his colleagues insisting that he accepts a handicap if he is to enter. Extraordinary stuff and a story we’re keen to track.

The Members’ Tables

FPL Virgin hogged the limelight when it came to Members’ tables this week, donating no less than three excellent new public offerings for our perusal.

He started with this view of Bournemouth’s defensive options. He followed that up with an effort which analysed those players assured of starting roles in his “Nailed On” table. Meanwhile, the third table looked at those players hooked off before the 90-minute mark, with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard topping the ranks of his “Never Finishes A Match” analysis.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There was big news this week with the launch of a first tournament from the new Community Watch committee. The aptly-named Community Watch Tournament is built around the concept of a head-to-head league made up of 20 teams, each with seven to 10 members.

If you’ve ever played one of the classic FFSUEFA team tournaments then you already know the gist. If not, then you really need to check it out and get involved.

Elsewhere, PDM is still looking for those who have finished at least one FPL season within the top 1,000 to join his Top 1K Any Season league (21265-6670), and those with at least one top 10,000 finish are invited to join Red Lightning’s Top 10,000 Any Season league. (757-400).

Also, Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing contest (44937-13340) is still open for entries, clocking up over 2000 so far.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I just made the exact same team except I opted for Daniels and Mee instead of Trippier and Rangel. I'm also unsure about RLC's value dropping quickly when he fails to bring in points so I went with Chalobah, but I'm quite unsure there . What are your thoughts on those issues? Because other than that I love the team

      1. Silva’s Left Nut

To elaborate, I went with Mee so as to have a reliably playing sub for a defender but if a nailed 4.0 arises I'll happily switch to him and Trippier.

Yeh, Rangel questioning... Had thought to myself of switching out Trippier... Would love Cedric but currently unlikely whether he'll start the first couple of GW's (Then could upgrade to a 4.5 bench). B4 posting this side I had also previously had Alli (3 spurs so quite risky) and Milivojevic but to account for a Man City attacker went Alli up to KDB and required the 0.5 more so downgraded to RLC... It's interesting.

I've had KDB since the real Madrid game, but after watching him live today bs spurs I see him as near-essential. Somehow always finds himself in scoring positions.

How would Cedric save you money? They cost the same, no?

Why either/or? One preference over the other?

If it has to do with them competing for points at midfield spots, that was one thing that LIV did well last year was getting goals spread b/t the likes of Coutinho, Mane, Firmino, Lallana, etc.

Also figured that with Coutinho likely dropping into a more deeper lying attacking midfield role, it will open up play for both Salah and Mane to be more forward thinking for diagonal runs/counters with blistering pace.

I just think the money can be better spent on forwards. I'm debating whether I can even afford one expensive pool mid and here you are with two of them. Downgrading one of the two and upgrading king to Lukaku or Kane could prove helpful.

Leicester? Porto wining champions league? Despite way stronger squads out there they still lost to Porto.

A strong squad doesn't mean they will be successful... anything can happen in football it's all about tactics

And city had the malt decisions made against them that season by officials.

Who was better than Leicester 2 seasons ago?
Porto got lucky that the better sides fell away. They were still a strong team.
Letting goals in cost City, not the refs.

It's like FPL, a good start then failing or a bad start and flying late. You still finish miles behind a consistent player.

my whole point here is that theirs a huge difference between a strong squad and a successful squad.

Chelsea nearly got relegated a season ago despite the squad having hazard and and Costa does that mean all the squads that finished above Chelsea in the ladder were a stronger team and a stronger squad?

No Europe helping is a myth. A popular one that arose after just two seasons.

The vast majority of title winners in the past had European competition concurrently.

Well City are looking to sign a new CB. And Danilo can play in a variety of positions including CB.

On paper City have one of the best squads in the world that was my point when I made my statement and I don't see how people can disagree with that.

Just like on paper Arsenal should be title contenders every year with the Strength of their coach

Saying a strong squad isn't that subjective I feel compared to saying they will be soccessful because of a strong squad.

While I personally believe city will win the title this season anything can happen in football.

well myth was the wrong word. I meant inconsequential.

As yes it has an effect but I thought it wasn't a significant one that mattered as the top 4 always won by a large margin before.

You made a good point that competition has gotten harder so I admitted you're right and I was wrong.

To put this into FPL terms, you can know what a strong squad looks like heading into GW1. You cannot know what he best squad looks like until a few weeks into the campaign when speculative punts begin to emerge. You can't start the season with an assemblage of punts as most of them will undoubtably flop even if you get lucky with one or two.

In terms of Europe (or CL specifically), the issue is not the team per se, but the players. We can expect rotational mayhem and a number of 'top' players to miss FPL matches. That ought to give an edge to picks from the likes of Arsenal and, soon enough, Everton.

Well it's my opinion obviously. Everything is going to be subjective but going by the strength of city's squad it's easy to see why i think they have the fourth strongest squad in the world.

Anyway we're off track here my point is in that city are a ver getting team and Spurs have easy fixtures not every game will be like that

I think I understand what you said. Having a 6.5 forward allows you to get any other of the same price if they start performing. Leaving 0.5 itb can be difficult for many. Tempting to upgrade to a more attacking player- Cedric to Bertrand.

Or we think he is 6.0 for a season. Maybe not as good as 6.5.

Ok, your point is completely valid.
But... Man City will no doubt be the best attacking team in the league, so which options do we go for?

De Bruyne who gets maybe an assist a game?
The real value will be in guessing which one of Aguero and Jesus will start up front, if you nail that, you are basically guaranteed points.

Downgrade Mane and/or KDB to upgrade the other two mids.

That defense is weak. Not every defense needs to have defenders from the top 4 to be good. More than 1 way to play this game.

Any love for Wij? 149 points last season, already scored a couple in preseason. Pretty nailed in Liverpool's midfield it seems.

I expect him to start the majority of games, not every single game.

      Not nailed at all

      Coutinho Henderson can/wij/lalana
Three players fighting for one spot. I would rate gini third out of those

Does it look like Jesus will be nailed? I currently have him in my team and am prepared to stick with him as City often score quite a lot goals early in the season

      Yeah he is.

I can confidently say that he is 100% nailed barring the odd rest

But Jesus has started all their pre season games and even when aguero started they used them into a 2 striker formation

He is nailed you already know the answer with the points you've given.

Plus he was never benched this season.

Some people here have obvious bias against city

Who are people going for as a differential? My team is quite generic I have the likes of Jesus Kane Lukaku KDB and Mane. Could Mane be seen as a differential as he is only owned by 4.8%

Agüero looks to be the best bet to me. If Mané is fit for GW1, would be great.

        4.8 is definitely differential material
That player will be gold for you

Looks like Cedric won't be starting GW1?

Would you get another Saint or spend the 5.0 on someone else? Who? (Already got Daniels)

I will get Bertrand if I end up having 0.5 extra. If not Yoshida.
