Amidst the flurry of second half goals conceded at Fulham last weekend, there was one ray of sunshine for Newcastle; the majestic performance of Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman’s mazy dribbles, in addition to a goal and assist for Danny Guthrie’s screamer, will come as no surprise to Newcastle fans and eagle-eyed Fantasy managers.

Last season Ben Arfa’s flair offered so much promise. Signed on loan from Marseille, he scored on his debut against Everton in September 2010 but just a month later his campaign was in tatters after a typically agricultural challenge by Manchester City’s Nigel De Jong. Such was Newcastle’s faith in Ben Arfa’s recovery and talent that, in the midst of his lengthy treatment in January, the club signed him on a permanent deal.

After breaking down with injury again over the summer, he eventually returned to the first team in September to finally begin his 2011/12 Premier League season. It’s been a tough old slog for Ben Arfa to regain form and a starting spot in the Newcastle team, though slowly but surely he’s getting there. A Boxing Day goal against Bolton was his first in the league this term. An impressive display against QPR in Gameweek 21 followed, before Ben Arfa produced arguably one of the goals of the season with a superb solo effort against Blackburn in the FA Cup earlier this month.

The Fulham game has undoubtedly signalled a full return to form. It was his first 90-minute Premier League appearance of the season and he even earned a bonus point for his efforts; how many players on the wrong side of a five-goal thrashing can say that? So with this French cat well and truly out of the bag, there may well be handsome rewards for those looking to acquire his services over the coming weeks. Currently costing 5.4m and with just 1.6% ownership, he is also among the most talented differentials in the game.

There are caveats, though. Clearly, he is still threatened with rotation. To allow him a starting berth against Fulham, Newcastle’s utility man and free-kick specialist Ryan Taylor made way at the Cottage. It seems unfathomable that Taylor will not be re-installed into the side for the majority of matches and Ben Arfa is among those who could find themselves on the bench. It’s also worth noting that despite Ben Arfa’s individual display, Newcastle seemed a lot less defensively secure- they had shipped just 6 goals in the six fixtures leading up to the Fulham game.

Another issue to consider is his ego. Ben Arfa is certainly not backwards at coming forwards about his talent and is adamant his best position is just behind the strikers, where he can weave his magic. Pardew disagrees and wants Ben Arfa out wide, where he believes he can be more effective.  He also questions Ben Arfa’s work ethic in that number 10 role. So far Pardew has been proved right and Ben Arfa, conscious that he could be in line for an international call up for France during Euro 2012, is happy to just play anywhere for now.

With Papiss Demba Cisse also arriving in the January transfer window, it’s fair to say Ben Arfa’s chances of a place up front are further lessened, with Pardew keen on linking Cisse with Demba Ba up top. Senegal’s exit from the African Cup of Nations means both will be available from gameweek 23 onwards, though it remains to be seen whether Pardew affords the duo a rest after their international exertions and extended travelling time.

Forthcoming fixtures are a mixture (bla,AVL, tot, WOL, SUN, ars, NOR, wba) but he could be a great option to rotate with a Sunderland midfielder like Stephane Sessegnon or the cut-price James McClean. Wildcarders should note that the two northeast clubs’ fixtures rotate very nicely indeed over the coming weeks, affording Ben Arfa further chance to shine; that’s providing Pardew gives him the game time, of course.

Jamsiep just wondered what Chelsea fans views are of Ballack and Deco from their time at the club? Was Deco not a bit slow and past it when he signed?

I've just realised, I probably would have been better off benching Ba for all these games that he missed. His replacement (Adebayor) has got me 2 every single week, obv apart from the DGW. Aint that a bitch.

The w/c team is approaching final tinkering...

    Krul - Lindegaard
    Kompany - Senderos - Taiwo - Evans - Bosingwa
Silva - Dempsey - Sessegnon - Morrison - Ben Arfa
    RVP - Welbeck - Aguero

Couple wild punts in midfield. I'm gonna leave enough for Welbeck to Ba next week. Thoughts?

Yeah I have had him the last few weeks and he would by my 6th midfielder if there was one. With Ba and Cisse back however he will be limited to RM which will pose defensive problems for Pardew. He is in form though and I would still expect him to start the next couple of games possibly behind Ba for a bit.

I would also be concerned with Bosingwa, isn't Ivanovic back soon?

just something to think about, but Lindy is taking a Man U spot. If you wanted more attack in this defensively difficult time you'd need 2 moves.

Also Mignolet is on same rotation, is 0.1 cheaper and nailed.

      just a thought

I hear ya, but Utd attacking coverage is difficult. Hernandez, Rooney and Nani have each burnt me this season! I can't see Valencia carrying on his form either. Evans/Lindy are low risk budget players in a normally pretty good defesive team, it's hard to pass up on that value.

So the realization of my w**k wild card choices are starting to hit home!

    Team for this week is

    Krul
    Senderos / Enrique / Raylor
    McClean / Dempsey / Valencia / Silva
    Aguero / RVP / Torres

    Sorenson / Moses / Shawx / Caulker

Got .7 in the bank and 1FT. My main objective is to get Bale back. I could do that with a 4 pt hit, Torres to Helgusson, Moses to Bale.

My main gripe with that is dumping Torres, I know it's stupid, I know he won't do it, but he's had one week in the team and I'm so p***ed off at both him and me, I feel he owes me this week!!!!

Anyway, thoughts on my team this week and any suggestions appreciated!

The defence is a pile of dog poo. 4 days of intensive wild card development blown away by 2 bottles of red wine and an itchy finger.

Enrique to Kompany/Richards a no brainer and Raylor will be dismissed very soon.

I'm thinking live with it this GW have two free transfers and make 3 key changes taking a 4 pt hit?

Kills me not to change it this week though!

He'll continue to be "a breath of fresh air" for about a year, then start to droll on, finally ending his days like Hansen on the bloody couch.

He "says it like it is", but already feuding with AVB re: Luiz.

He's been a notch above the usual so far, but the real test comes when he's run out of the initial things he wants to say. He's certainly competent, but I worry that he'll just become part of the new wave of couch-bores.

    So , Luis Enrique.

He's been steady enough so far and was a bit of a bargain to those at 5.0.

BUT - Horrible, horrible fixtures. Pool's form had also dropped - may be ok after CC match?

    Also - blank GW. SO,

    1) Keep him on the bench (fix improve after 28, DGW) but lose a defensive slot - I'm not sure I can afford to do this with my back 5.

    2) Swap out for ???. Jevans maybe, Cahill, Verm? Nothing setting me alight here.

Already have Kompany + 3 cheapies.

With 3 cheapies already, I'm a bit scared of going too light - but all the strong teams have rotten fixtures.

Jevans would be the safest pick and I could just leave him in there after gw28.

Which defs do you think will score the highest in the next 6 gws - money no object! I appreciate that your answer still may be Taiwo.

This is taken from the scout injury page. About Gibbs.

Wenger confirmed on 20/1 he is 2-3 weeks away from return. [Source]

Next three games are bol, BLA, sun. Hopefully Gibbs will be back after that.

It's a 1 GW thing, I plan to dump Rooney for Ba and then get VDV back in or someone else.

Might even do Welbeck or Fletcher.

        I'm leaning towards Larsson.

OK. You should have probably mentioned that in the original post. For one week, I would go for Larsson, as he has form AND fixture. Walcott plays Bolton, but has been rubbish last few times i have seen him.

Many of us are on WC this week. And that makes for abnormal brain activity, and extra procrastination at work (anyone?).

So, let's have a quick Pros / Cons time. Feel free to add to mine!

SUBJECT: 8 tier one attacking players -OR- 7+1 cheapo

    8 BIG ONES
    Pros:
    - Will normally get you more points than the 7+1
    - Handles unexpected injuries/rotation etc better, as you have a better player coming off the bench.
    Cons:
    - Leaves extra value on the bench each GW

    TRADITIONAL 7+1
    Pros:
    - Keeps minimal budget on the bench
    Cons:
    - Sub generally less likely to score points

The reason I am looking particularly extra into this is because I am considering the following strike-force:
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Valencia, Sess
    RVP, Dzeko, Ba

    the 7+1 would be
    Silva, Bale, Valencia, Sess, Moses/Sigurdsson
    RVP, Aguero, Ba
+ 0.5 extra in defence bolstering

Would love to have you, my fellow dead-zoners join in on this discussion!

The problem with 8-0 is that you'll have to bench someone like Sess, Dempsey, Valencia, Dxeko each week, and they're all as likely to score you decent returns. I'm a big fan of the 7+1 with a solid but cheapish rotating bench player, usually in the mid-field. It depends on the stage of the season also. Earlier in this season you could have 3 x10M strikers and make 30+ points from them each week, definitely handing the likes of Aguero, RVP, Rooney, Ba the armband each week. As the strikers have fallen away the attacking midfielders have come to the fore, Dempsey, Valencia, Bale, etc. and there is now an argument to play all 5 mids each week.

In short, I am undecided honestly but would always spend most of my budget on 4 x really good mids, 2 x really good forwards and 1 x mid-priced forward.

Yeah. This is an argument for sure - risk of big hausl stuck on the bench. But I feel that is a non-problem. All the players in the FPL game you don't have in your 11 is basically points you are losing out on. So is it so bad to have points on the bench? And this can happen with your cheapo as well, but then its actually a less chance of you getting them, as you always are benching him. With the big 8, you will try to rotate - a kind of prediction not unlike captaincy choice I feel.

        Further thoughts?

You've talked me into it Gaz ... does make sense. Just need a good pair of mid-priced strikers to rotate. I've got Zamora and Cabaye at the moment who seem to rotate rather nicely for the next few gameweeks.

I am with you on the 8 big ones. On WC myself and will likely have the same midfield as you except with Welbeck instead of Ba possibly. The big 8 gives you more options and reliability and I don't think its necessary to spend too much on defense with the way things have gone so far this year. Thus it is unnecessary to have two cheap rotating mids/strikers.

Working on the wildcard team and am pretty set on this side. I also like the idea of Krul and Linde in goal

    Krul, _______
    Richards, Shotton, Kelly, _______ , ________
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sess, Valencia
    RVP, Dzeko, ________

What do you think of these options, A, B or C?

    A) Krul/Mignolet
    Taiwo/Evans = Ba

    B) Linde/Krul
BAE/Simpson =Welbeck (selling Dzeko for Ba in 3 weeks)

    C) Linde/Krul
(two defenders for 9.2m) = Ba

I am ditching BAE after this GW (might even take him out now while I am on the wild card).

About Richards. I have a feeling that what you might gain in attacking potential, you will lose in the occasional rotation. Kompany on the other hand does not get rotated at all. I reckon that's worth the extra 0.2.

Yeah I could do that if I downgrade Simpson to Santon. Its one of those 50/50 calls as Santon could be rotated as well

I don't think Simpson is worth 4.4, when you have Santon and Williamson for 4.2. But then again I just did Simps to Santon

Not keen on Linde, Ryan given the uncertainty of his starts. Vorm/Krul for me.

Might pay to wait a week with Taiwo, or at least see how he goes v CHS.

The optimum back 5 would look something like: Bad K, Shotton, Kelly, Evans, Simpson/Santon. Not liking the uncertainty around Richards with rest/hamstrings.

Ade for this week then bring in Ba for week 24.

      Good luck! 🙂

Good call on Evans, Simpson. I may consider it if I don't go with Linde. Personally I am not too comfortable doubling up on Newcastle defense but it may work out. Richards/Kompany is 50/50 IMO and I'm not sure Vorm is worth 5.2m with their home fixtures coming up

I just did one of those irreversible swaps

Simpson ➡ Santon (have had Simpson since GW2)

I reckon its worth having the slight punt on Santon. If it goes belly up, I could always get Williamson in.

    Rash move? I'm wild-carding.

Santon is a better bet than simpson. Absolute class. I would be wary of williamson. We are almost certainly going to get another centre back in during this window. Many more performances like Fulham, and Willo won't be around for very long. In fairness, he has played well in the few matches up to fulham.

To my knowledge Santon is much better defensively, and also offers something on the offence than RTaylor. Now he is (almost) also integrated (Pardew-half-a-season style, not AVB-one-week style).

Can't really see what kind of games NUFC would want a less solid, more attacking left back though. They are not THAT strong yet.

Don't believe everything that pardew says. Raylor has been in no way one of the players of the season. What he has done, is performed better than expected. And he is an important squad player as he can cover so many positions, so pardew wants to keep his confidence up. I have watched pretty much every game, so believe me when I tell you that he is a terrible player. He is decent (but no great) with the dead ball. But that's about it. Saying that, he is better than obertan.

I've said it several times on here, but I still think that Pardew would love Barfa to play that right wing position. And he has been bigging him up recently too. Barfa seems to be doing more that pardew is asking for. If he keeps doing what he has been doing, then Raylor won't get a look in.

Raylor might get a game while Tiote is away. But after that, i can't see it.

The only time we would need to play raylor, is if cabeye is out, because we will need him for dead balls.

Jones/Smalling both over Simpson, Evra over Santon until proven otherwise, Carrick is in great form so far and Cleverley made United a different team earlier on.
Newcastle have potential but full-strength they are probably 5th or 6th.

One of Carrick/Cleverley would be over Cabaye and even if they weren't...United 6, Newcastle 5, and the fact is Uniteds players that didn't make the best of the two teams are better than Newcastles, which is what we are really talking about.
Don't forget you beat United who had Valencia at RB, no Vidic, Giggs in centre-mid, Park at left mid and Berbatov up front...

Song is over Tiote for starters.
Wilshere has missed all season, but he is a better player than Cabaye.
Barfa and Jonas? lol, not even gonna bother.
And Santon? He was absolutely atrocious against Fulham.

China, I think you're slightly getting ahead of yourself here 😉

Don't forget Newcastle (albeit Ba, Cisse & Tiote) lost 5-2 to a below average Fulham team. Definitely you deserve the position you're in at the moment & it would be tough to keep the 6th come season's end.

You're probably right that I'm getting ahead of myself. But its been a long time since a toon fan has been able to entertain these thoughts. I do believe that our first 11 is a match for anyone. As our performances against the manchester teams have shown. But we don't have a strong enough squad to threaten the top 4. Next season though, is a different story!!

heh, everything you say makes sense to me CM, i just dont think its wise to bring barfa in on a WC.

of course this coming from the madman who's hanging off a cliff by WCing in Sorensen/Lindegaard as a GK combo.

I'm only considering barfa in "my wife's team" as a cheap rotation with McClean. If he plays, he will get points. If he doesn't I will have plenty of cover.

Sorenson is in my main team too. Here's hoping he gets one more chance!!

No no no no no no. Ralyor is a terrible terrible defender. He will play some games on the right of mid. And fill in at either fullback, only if there is an injury.

So I am lining up my defence for my wayne card

    Lindegaard (play him every game)
Vorm (bought him at 4.1 so works well as backup)

    Kompany
    Cahill
    Santon
    Senderos
    Taiwo

Basically Cahill and Kompany will play every game, while the 3 others will rotate.

    What do you think?
