Scout Notes – De Gea Stars For United

Man United labour to a goalless draw in Sevilla thanks to a star turn from goalkeeper David De Gea.

After big away wins for Man City and Liverpool and a stirring comeback from Spurs, United’s performance on the Champions League road was considerably more prosaic.

So while some of the English sides will have the luxury of saving their main assets for league duties when the second legs of the European ties are played in March, Jose Mourinho’s men will not be among them.

The Old Trafford return against Sevilla is on Tuesday, March 13, just three days after a key Gameweek 30 visit from Liverpool.

An FA Cup quarter-final tie at home to Brighton follows on Saturday, making it three big matches in the space of seven days for the Red Devils.

Potentially, their Gameweek 29 league encounter at Crystal Palace – five days before the Liverpool match – could be the one rotation hotspot over that ensuing run of vital fixtures.

That FA Cup clash means a blank Gameweek 31 for United which, coupled with a league schedule involving Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City over the next five matches, is prompting sales of many of their players.

Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Phil Jones are all in the top five for transfers-out heading into Gameweek 28, with another four – Romelu Lukaku, Antonio Valencia, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial – in the top 30.

No United player is in the corresponding list for transfers-in.

Pogba was fit enough for the bench last night after his well-publicised bout of illness, and the midfielder then replaced Ander Herrera after 17 minutes when the Spaniard succumbed to a muscle issue which Mourinho declared post-match to be ‘a bad injury’.

In the short-term, Herrera’s potential absence could be significant. He was instrumental in United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea last season, gaining plaudits for his man-marking role on Eden Hazard. Mourinho will likely be forced to turn to a new ploy to deal with the in-form Belgian on Sunday.

But Pogba and Sanchez again struggled to live up to their star billing as United sat deep and soaked up waves of pressure from Sevilla.

Mourinho had made only three changes to the side that beat Huddersfield in the FA Cup at the weekend, with De Gea, Valencia and Herrera replacing Sergio Romero, Luke Shaw and Michael Carrick.

And it was the goalkeeper who proved to be the difference on the night, pulling off a number of saves as the hosts out-shot United 25 to six, with eight efforts on target to the Red Devils’ one.

De Gea, with 43.4% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), is by some margin the side’s most popular player, with an otherwise stuttering United still dealing consistently in the currency of clean sheets.

Last night’s shut-out was their 23rd in all competitions this season – three more than any other Premier League side – and they’ve not been breached in five of the last seven Gameweeks.

Their domestic schedule (CHE cry LIV blank SWA mci WBA) suggests some more of the same is to come, although the visit of Liverpool and the trip to Man City will test their backline to the limit.

Aside from De Gea, however, investing in the defence, particularly at centre-half, is not straightforward.

Jones’ absence with a knock has handed Victor Lindelof back-to-back starts, although not in the league.

But the return of Eric Bailly – he was on the bench last night – gives Mourinho fresh options at centre-half, with Chris Smalling’s run of five consecutive Gameweek starts perhaps under threat should Jones recover quickly.

In attack, the issues surrounding Sanchez’s integration into the team remain ongoing.

Pogba has struggled as part of a more defensive midfield three to allow the Chilean a degree of freedom on the left, but that freedom has not led to major attacking returns – he has one league goal, and three FA Cup assists to his name thus far.

Indeed, United have now failed to score in three of their last five in all competitions – their only goals have came from 2-0 league and FA Cup wins over Huddersfield.

United’s performance in Spain was defensively sound and offensively under-powered, which neatly sums up their current status.

A tricky schedule, a blank Gameweek 31 (with the possibility of another in Gameweek 35 should they see off Brighton in the FA Cup) and rotation issues to come if they progress in the Champions League all make their assets unattractive Fantasy options for now – De Gea aside.

Once again, the Spaniard’s importance wasn’t lost on his manager post-match:

“I think the clean sheets are because of the team and because of David [De Gea]. But, we also kept a few clean sheets with [Sergio] Romero in goal, so I think the team even with a couple of mistakes, the team defended well and when we made the mistakes, obviously David was there. And that’s the reason why he is what he is.”

Fantasy Eliteserien (Norwegian league) is back for a second season! Link: https://fantasy.eliteserien.no/

For those that are unaware, Fantasy Eliteserien is the closest thing to FPL. The concept, design and rules are the same as FPL. Last season we were more than 510 players in the FFS league and the community articles had well above 10k comments in total.

The season will consist of 30 GWs between March and November. 1/3 of the season will be played during the off-season in FPL so this is an excellent opportunity to play a similar game while anticipating the next FPL season. Lord Bendtner retains his place as the most expensive player in the game, checking in at 13m.

This game also has live updates of OR points, OR rank, GW points and leagues. The down time when the deadline passes is usually less than a minute.

Eliteserien wanted to use the same chips as FPL but that permission was not granted by FPL. Therefore they have introduced three chips of their own. These are:

Park the Bus - All your defenders get their score doubled for 1 GW.
Forward Rush - All your forwards get their score doubled for 1 GW.
Double Captain - Both Captain and Vice Captain gets their score doubled for 1 GW.

The FFS league is open. The code is: 4-325

Mrklin of Norway and Niemi are preparing several community articles with tips, tricks and strategies so keep an eye out for those in the coming days!

When’s the first article going to come out and can you remember roughly how many total players were there last year?

        Total from FFS? About 500.

Total players were about 71k I think.

I sold. Tough schedule, uncertainty, gw31 blank, and desire to get a defender with an easier set of opponents led to jones being the sacrifice over Alonso or Otamendi. Could backfire. A man utd result against Chelsea that mirrors Sevilla would likely get Jones 9 points, but I needed to get some cash from someone, and couldn’t see holding an uncertain player over one who could score and is deemed fit.

    RP3 - advice appreciated chaps..

    Current team:

    Lloris
    Maguire - Smalling - Robertson
    Salah - Sterling - Walcott - Richarlison - Deulofeu
    Kane(c) - Firmino

Bench: Elliot - Dunk - Quaner - Kenny

    Thoughts on:

    A) Quaner > Vardy (-4) and bench one of the Watford assets
    B) Quaner + Sterling > Vardy + Mahrez (-8) and same as above
    C) No hits this week - squads fine

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Are Manchester United worth bothering with?

Manchester United may have potentially two double Gameweeks but there recent attacking form has been atrocious. Coupled with rotation at the back their best defensive picks are hard to pin down.

Are Manchester United assets even worth investing in?

Which Red Devils appeal to you for the season run in?

DDG appeals sort of for the doubles....but other than that none others appeal at all....which is really sad.

How has this once great giant of Fantasy Football, the team of Giggs, Scholes, Rooney etc ended up offering so little in recent seasons?

Yeah agreed Jonty. Bizarrely I did a shot write up on my feelings below out of sheer coincidence. I’m just not interested in them at all. You know what sort of team they are when you want their keeper. Like an expensive Burnley.

Paying that price for a keeper or defender once they concede I want to know that it's still possible for them to get attacking points. De Gea ( or Jones) don't really offer that

          • 8 Years

That's nice as a viewer of football, but people want him for his points over 90mins, regardless of precisely when and how he scores them.

But what I mean is as soon as he concedes that's it. He's on for a 2 pointer. With the defenders at his price , they concede and there is always hope of a goal or assist

i think its a misconception that man u have parked the bus. Ever since that borefest at Anfield Mourinho has actuallly been quite attacking in terms of selection for the prem league. His biggest problem has been finding a role for Pogba, the build up play has been far too ponderous. Personally think theyll find a way, too much talent up top and they're still the best team in the country behind their neighbours

Got DDG and I'm happy with just him.

Martial is the only other option I like but he just isn't anywhere near nailed for reasons known only by Jose.

Sanchez was never going to live up to that very expensive price tag unless he played central striker, but Jose just will not drop Lukaku regardless of form.

that said, I still actually think lukaku is worth considering - he plays every game, is actually in very good form and being let down by his team not the other way around - for the doubles he remains keeping an eye on

I felt like this before GW1, and I steered clear of all United assets all season. The exception was my biggest mistake of the season: selling KDB for Mkhitaryan in GW 4 simply because I had 2FTs and nothing else to do.

Interesting that we're now planning for DGWs far in the future yet just a couple of GWs ago it was too early for the scouts to consider GW31 scenarios. 😛

To be honest, for most people around here, this question will become relevant when they WC or make FTs nearer to the DGWs. Before then, they simply aren't worth considering unless you already own DDG, then you can justify keeping him.

It’s quite a bizarre time in the UTD realm. For many years I couldn’t miss a UTD game, even as a Liverpool supporter. Because more than a Liverpool fan, I’m a fan of football more than anything else.
Football has ingrained wonderful memories upon me.
Saturdays out with Dad, fish and chips, the drive to the games, the freezing cold, the anticipation on the drive there, the conversation on the way back, especially how fickle they could be.
But for the last 5 or so years I’ve found myself watching UTD less and less. When LVG got the sack a friend of mine said he heard Mourinho would probably take over. I laughed. “Why would UTD get him in? The reason they got rid of LVG was because his football was boring.”
Well, that happened. But something just occurred to me this morning. I didn’t watch the game last night and have no idea what it was like. But what I do know is my wife asked me and my flat, “are you going to watch the game then?” To which we both replied “nah, it’ll be a nil nil anyway”. We laughed as it was said so simultaneously. But it got me to thinking, when did I become so bored of this team that I stopped watching. A shame really, they used to be something really special.

I think he left them with a really poor squad (by their standards) and dragged them to the title through force of personality and RVP. They've certainly spent enough since that they should be over that now, though.

there's still a lot of talent at Utd.
      just not being maximised.
one of the key issues (particualrly compared to other top 4/5 sides) is their counter-attack. Nowhere near as quick or clinical as others. Often see them break to opponents penalty box and then just stop.

Utd fan here. Was at the spurs game at Wembley. Watching that game was a harrowing experience. Personally I am grateful that the rot has been stopped under Mourinho but now I wish he would do one and we bring in a coach befitting the attacking history of the club. Last night's game was Mourinho strategy 101. He is the master of it but for me no thank you. Pochettino please.

For me the 12/13 team that won the league where getting towards needing a real refresh. This wasn't done in the following summer and signing effectively just Fellaini and Mata for the season wasn't going to solve things.

Sir Alex stepping down as well had a major effect in dampening the arrogance that was around Man Utd. The club seemed mortal for the first time in years and each poor results only confirmed fans worst fears. Add to that the LVG reign and now Mourinho and here we are.

It certainly doesn't help that Lukaku has had 2 double points haul all season where in the past 2-3 strikers would be big FPL options. The mentality of the club when taking on other big teams is usually incredibly negative, which to me is accepting your not as good as the opposition.

For me Lukaku wasn't going to be the best signing anyway in terms of improving Utd's style. Got slow feet, mediocre control, only reasonable finisher, not a particularly good passer. Big unit with power and decent pace
You get a feeling he's never going to be more than 20odd goal a season player which for 80m doesn't seem enough. Not like you're paying that extra money for the final part of the jigsaw.

Nice post. I think they've betrayed their recent (post 1992) values and identity. It was always going to be difficult to replace Ferguson, but replacing him with 3 managers in a row renowned for either defensive football, pragmatism, or both, has really made the difference more stark.

If a more forward thinking, offensive manager had replaced Ferguson, then even if results had not followed, there would have been that link to the recent past of flair, attacking football that their fans so enjoyed.

Its not just the managers though; their recruitment strategy is scattergun at best. I mean just look at the makeup of their current squad. They have 3 players (Sanchez, Martial, Rashford) who are well suited to a left wing forward position, but none who are suited to the right hand side. They have a dearth of true centre midfielders. And they are still fielding 2 converted wingers Ferguson signed who are well into their 30's now at full back. I've not even mentioned recent expensive failures like De Maria and Falcao, who were either thrown on the scrap heap too quickly, or not wise purchases in the first place.

Most of all though (and I'm aware this is a bit of a cliche), they don't play as a team, they play as a collection of expensive individuals.

"...they don't play as a team, they play as a collection of expensive individuals."
This is an indication of where the problem lies, not just for united but for lots of premier league teams, where the manager is not given enough time to build a team up because he will be out of the door if the results don't swiftly turn their way. So lots of money gets thrown at so called premium players in order to gain a quick fix.

You would think that Leicester winning the league would have been a wake up call for the top six, and that it's more important to have a strong, well balanced team in order to win games consistently.

If you've Salah and Firmino already then Mahrez, otherwise Mane.
The reason being that if Mane is your third Liverpool player it prevents you getting a Liverpool defender.
I expect Mane to outscore the others over the next 4 GWs but Mahrez + Liverpool defender should outscore Mane + your 3rd choice defender over the next 4 GWs.

Can we consider FH for GW37? If you plan to have 3 Arsenal and 3 City for DGW 34, you will have 6 players for 35 too (+Fabianski = 7 players) + 2 transfer to have 9 players. Maybe FH is bettter option for GW37? ((checking Ben Crellin prediction for DGWs))

    Pope (Adrian)
    Ota Jones Fernandez (Ogbonna Zeegelaar)

    2FT £1.2m

    a) Kun + Ota/Jones > Firmino + VVD
