The knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) competition kick off in a matter of hours and, ahead of Matchday Seven, we’re back with our Preview of the upcoming action for our European Fantasy managers…

This round of sixteen is one long, drawn out process. Having served a two-month break in the European off-season, the powers that-be have decided the eight fixtures will be spread across four days and two separate weeks. Great for television rights but, from a Fantasy perspective, not so straightforward to preview our favourites.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Barcelona

The first fixture in our coverage sees reigning champions Barcelona travel to the BayArena in Germany to face the Group E runners-up, Bayer Leverkusen.

Following on from another La Liga mishap at Osasuna last weekend, Pep Guardiola’s men can all but bid farewell to retaining their Spanish title, with a giant 10 point gap between themselves and Real Madrid. Nigh on all of Barcelona’s concentration from hence forth will be pinpointed on winning the Champions League for the third time in four years, then, with the added incentive of becoming the first side to retain the title.

Sitting sixth in the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen have a mountain of a task in hand if they are to stop Barca but, if they are to stand any sort of chance, the cheap UCL goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, will need to be at his utmost best. If Guardiola’s men triumph, then, almost inevitably, it will be Lionel Messi inflicting the damage – the little Argentine was the top-scoring Fantasy player in the group stages, with 43 points.

Ones to watch: Bernd Leno (Leverkusen), Lionel Messi (Barca)

Lyon vs FC APOEL

While the group-stage exit of both Manchester sides drew plenty of headlines, the real surprise story was the unexpected, and wholly deserved, rise of FC APOEL.

The likes of Gustavo Manduca and Ailton are available for bargain prices and, if Lyon underestimate their opponents in the way that Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk did before them, another “upset” won’t be too far away.

The Ligue 1 side, despite a surprise home defeat to Caen on Saturday, will be able to call upon an armoury of firepower to thwart the visitors’ absorbing counter-attack style of play. Michel Bastos, with his thunderous and pinpoint delivery, will adorn many midfields, while the return of Lisandro means that he and Bafe Gomis offer all sorts of options up top for those with a space to spare.

Ones to watch: Michel Bastos (Lyon), Gustavo Manduca (APOEL)

Zenit St. Petersburg vs Benfica

The Russian side have been dealt a major blow before a ball has even been kicked, with the news that Danny, their star Portuguese midfielder, is out for the season with a serious knee injury.

Zenit – who are in the middle of their domestic break – will need to be at the top of their game to compensate for the lack of midfield guile. With this in mind, 5.0 priced Nicolas Lombaerts, the UCL top scoring defender to date (a fiend with the new recovered ball bonus), will be a key figure in the first leg tie.

Lombaerts and company are likely to have their work cut out, though. Opponents Benfica are in imperious, unbeaten, form so far this season. Pulling all the strings in the midfield will be Nicolas Gaitan (linked heavily with Manchester United) while the strike-force of Oscar Cardozo and ex-Bolton Wanderers loanee Rodrigo are in hot goalscoring streaks. The latter with five goals in his last four games and the former with eight in nine.

Ones to watch: Nicolas Lombaerts (Zenit), Nicolas Gaitan (Benfica)

AC Milan vs Arsenal

Arguably the biggest tie of the round. Two of the tournament’s high-profile sides come face to face to tussle for a spot in the quarter finals. With three appearances in the final between them over the last seven seasons, both clubs will fancy their chances of progressing.

Milan may currently be sat atop of Serie A right now but that only tells part of the story; inclement weather in Italy has kept their rivals from catching up on the fixture front. Massimo Allegri’s side have hit a bump in the road over their most recent crop of games, though a weekend win at Udinese did hint at a return to form.

The hosts have drawn and lost their last two at the San Siro, though, and Arsenal will arrive in confident mood after Saturday’s comeback at Sunderland. We’re picking out two highly competent –and in-fom- strikers from either side as our ones to watch, with goals looking inevitable. If that proves to be the case, Zlatan Ibramhimovic and Robin Van Persie are the men for the job.

Ones to watch: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Milan), Robin Van Persie (Arsenal)

CSKA Moscow vs Real Madrid

We now move on to next week’s four fixtures. With all our trades needed to be made by 7.30pm this evening for next week’s games, though, the schedule hardly does European Fantasy managers any favours. In terms of injuries, it’s a case of crossing your fingers that lady luck stays on your side.

Like their fellow Russian qualifiers, a lot will be determined by just how well the CSKA back-line can keep the opposition attack at bay. The experience and goalscoring ability of Sergei Ignashevich make him stand out that little bit extra in comparison to his team-mates.

For the visitors, it goes without saying that, if you can afford him, Cristiano Ronaldo is the one man you want to own. By now we’re all well aware that he’s pretty good (119 goals in 122 games for Madrid) at this football lark and it’s just a matter of whether his hefty UCL price-tag of 12.4m is too much of a burden, with other great heavyweights (Lionel Messi) stealing your budget. Nearly a full 3 million cheaper, though, Karim Benzema is a more than ample Fantasy understudy.

Ones to watch: Sergei Ignashevich (CSKA), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

Napoli v Chelsea

Napoli are not really in gangbusters form (0W, 4D, 1L in last five league games) right now but are in the knockout stages very much through merit, as much as Manchester City fans may beg to differ.

Chelsea are hardly in better form (1W, 3D, 1L in last five league games) but also find themselves in the thick of a Champions League fight and believing that progress to the further stages to be more than a distinct possibility. An expectation, in fact.

Having a Russian billionaire on the training ground sidelines is hardly conducive to a tension free atmosphere but Juan Mata is one man who, despite all those around him floundering, has kept his cool to date and will be vital to flying home with a first leg advantage.

In true Italian form, Napoli will be looking to stifle an opposition attack -lead by Fernando Torres- to another night to forget in front of goal and rely on the likes of Edinson Cavani on the counter. A UCL price-tag of 5.0 for defender Salvatore Aronica looks the most enticing to us to consider.

Ones to watch: Salvatore Aronica (Napoli), Juan Mata (Chelsea)

FC Basel vs Bayern Munich

Man United fans won’t be too pleased having to watch FC Basel duke it out against one of their European arch-rivals, Bayern Munich. The Swiss side fully deserved their spot in the knock-out stages of the competition, though, and now there’s an interesting little sub-story to this fixture.

Xherdan Shaqiri is one of the rising crop of Swiss starlets currently blooming and, as a result of his promise, has recently earned a €10 million transfer to Bayern Munich from Basel. Team-mate Granit Xhaka is thought of even more highly and could be an alternative.

The thing is, Shaqiri is remaining in Switzerland until the end of the season and now finds himself in the odd situation of playing for his current club against future club. We don’t doubt he’ll give his all but can’t help but find novelty in the circumstance, though Shaqiri’s talents suggest he is bound to be at the heart of the action, regardless.

For now Bayern will just have to make do with the likes of Franck Ribery, Thomas Mueller, Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez as they look to get a foothold in this tie. Domestically, though, Jupp Heynckes’ side have been poor on the road, winning just two of their last seven- Basel will be determined to get a foothold in the first-leg next week.

Ones to watch: Xherdan Shaqiri (Basel), Franck Ribery (Bayern)

Marseille vs Inter Milan

At the start of the season Marseille were enduring a torrid time in Ligue 1, while their fortunes in Europe offered a beacon of hope. Now the form has improved on the domestic front and Didier Deschamps’ side will come into their tie against Inter bursting with positivity, just as their opponents have begun to stumble following their own domestic recovery.

Loic Remy was on Harry Redknapp’s radar in the recently-closed transfer window, Mathieu Valbuena has seen an uptick in form with four assists and a pair of goals in his last four league games, while Nicolas N’Koulou is getting plenty of plaudits for his performances at the back. A whole gamut of affordable UCL squad fillers with more than enough potential to ponder.

Inter, meanwhile, have become a tepid proposition in the last few weeks, as their defence has faltered and results have taken a real turn for the worse. Diego Milito scored four in the recent 4-4 draw at Palermo and Yuto Nagatomo is nice and cheap at 5.0 but we’ll highlight Wesley Sneijder, more in hope that he’ll remember the form that saw him guide Inter to Champions League glory a couple of years ago. You’ll need more than a few shekels, and a midfield space, spare to afford the Dutchman.

Ones to watch: Nicolas N’Koulou (Marseille), Wesley Sneijder (Inter)

I'd try and get Ba in this week if you can.

Maybe downgrade Walters/Dempsey and upgrade Graham?

I own Dempsey but not convinced he's worth his fee.

I have Vorm & Lindegaard as my keepers just now and so do most in my league so I'm thinking Schwarzer & Mignolet as they are the exact same price. I need to gamble now to try and catch up, what's the thoughts on this?

Keep Lindy IMO and get Mignolet. I think Sunderland are good value for cleanies and for 8.8m you can play Lindy every week, get points for the odd game he starts and have Mignolet ready to come in when he doesn't.

      OR

      Lindy > Mignolet

Agree that 2 transfers on keepers at this stage is a waste unless you don't have any others you want to make.

    DOOSRA

Not a bad shout about Surman, he is certainly enjoying the attacking half of the field! Got a mini plan set out which will obviously change as no 3 week plan ever works due to injuries/form:

    GW26: Save
    GW27: Ben Arfa> M.Davies/Moses/Surman
    GW28: Hart&Welbeck>Friedel&Rooney

The fact none of those includes a hit is what suggests I won't live up to this 🙂

Top K1 for my best team others vary up to about K10. Holding my own but not making much headway.

I think there is a certain level in most games where you hit the full time players and making progress from there requires concentration and a bit of luck with captains and the odd differential.

I might be stuborn here but I´ll go ahead and say it again.. Nani always steps up his game when near a big competition like EURO or WC, so I would say that with the fact that he likes to show his football , wich he didn´t yet, will be a boost for his end of the season... might be wrong though but you got to agree it makes sense... and his value keeps falling...

Overall rank. Although, that's just a starting point, as we know ranks are inconsequential in h2h's. 😉

Yup I'm looking to set the limit of entries to either
                  1) 50 max (& get the best 32 based on overall rank) or
                  2) till the point where we have 32 managers of rank

Looking at your summary sheet you've got 26 entries already, and it's only been about 15 hours.

So far I'm ranked 14th out of those 26, so I hope I qualify 🙂
Olympiacos, Zagreb and Trabzonspor the least favourite teams, the real minnows are more popular 😉

G-G-Granny, if you're still about, has there been a setting change on the website over the last week or so? Whenever I F5 the page, post a comment or click on one of the recent comments it takes me back to the top of the page, not where I previously was looking/commenting (this is only on the work PC as I've got to use Internet Explorer on here, it's fine at home).

Just curious is all, as it can be quite annoying having to scroll right through the lot again to find where I was, especially if the page is quite old, and therefore long.

I just dont see the logic in bringing in Aguero this week over Rooney. It seems a waste of 2 transfers to me.

Surely Rooney could score as much, if not more against Norwich, and perhaps even against Spurs next week. Particularly seeing as Rooney appears to be hitting form and Aguero isnt.

Is it just in the hope that, based on previous home fixtures, Aguero will come good?

Yeah if you have rooney and not aguero then might as well stick now as most will be doing aguero to rooney in two weeks time, and more than likely other players you'll be wanting to use your transfers on in that time.

If you have either your should keep.

I am an Aguero owner and I have contemplated making the opposite move from Aguero > Rooney this week. It's not worth it, either one of them or both could have great gameweeks. Just got to roll with the punches.

Honestly I'd say I would rather have Rooney.

Aguero could be amazing these next two gameweeks but there are so many question marks over his form, his ability to justify his hefty price tag, Balotelli's return, Tevez' possible return, Mancini getting creative with his rotation now that Europa League is back etc etc.

With Rooney you have the security of his starts and set pieces but admittedly you lose out on Aguero's more lucrative fixtures. I think having Rooney, Silva, Kompany and Richards/Hart is optimum. I know Richards has the rotation threat but you can deal with that at his price.

These are all good points and is making me lean towards Rooney. Now its just a matter of how to get him.
                1) Dempsey -> 6.2 mil Mfer then Dzeko to Rooney
                2) Enrique -> Santon, Sess - McClean Dzeko -> Rooney for -4

oooh, tough call right now... I guess it depends on whether you have a lot wrong with your team... if there are no other transfers you want to make then Aguero, if there are others then Rooney since you'll want him in 2 gw anyway

Yeah Lind needs to go and so does Enrique so I guess rooney makes sence. Now the only problem is who do I drop for him? Was looking at Dempsey but that feels wrong. I could be tempted to take my 3rd hit for the season and do Enrique-> Santon, Sess->McClean and Dzeko-> Rooney which would basically solve most of my problems then GW27 so Lind-> Krul. If I went for Aguero I could make it happen with thr funds from Sess->McClean

    Morning all

Been sent home from work as no one wants to share my stinking cold.

    So GW 26
    KRULL

    SANTON, RICHARDS, RANGEL

    BEAUSEJOUR, DEMPSEY, BALE, SILVA

ROONEY (VC), AGUERO (C), RVP SUBS - MING, SIIGS, SEND, ENRIQUE

Have I got this Right? Not sure about c/vc. keep swapping, fixtures good for both, Aguero better at home but form not brill at the moment. Rooney just getting better and may well murder Norwich?

Allready done two transfers for yet ANOTHER 4 point hit (Rooney and Beausejour). Brought Rooney in early as he just looks unstoppable again, and need to try something to catch mini league leader. I know I shouldn't but just cant stop myself. Must learn controll!!

      Yo Brian!

It's really a gamble, that. for 2 reasons:
      1) They've conceded a ridiculous amount of goals in the recent past.
      2) Raylor has lots of competition at RM. There are even talks of Jonas at RM and Ferguson at LM.

I know you could argue Tiote & Cabaye are back, but Raylor is simply too expensive for this gamble. I'd be more comfy with Krul + Simpson doubling up.

PS: Check out the FPL h2h Cup if you're interested. You could kick our arse with that rank of yours. 😉

                    BRIAN:
So once you get a team (say Barca), it's a normal h2h Cup. Any hits taken will be subtracted from your GW score. Notice, there's also a home advantage of 4 points over the h2h opponent.

Why is Sean Penn banging on about Britain's involvement in the Falklands and Prince William's deployment to the islands. What does he know about it. I don't remember him condeming the US invasion of Iraq when they brought the country to it's knees killing women and children and destroying any infrastructure they had. Hollywood tw@t

I'm pretty sure he did condemn the US invasion of Iraq (haven't you seen that searing documentary Team America - World Police?) And after the Haiti earthquake he spent about 6 months living there and actually helping the people there on the ground.

Does that mean he/we/anyone not from there shouldn't complain about the violent repression in Syria and Bahrain? The way China treats Tibet? Darfur? Guantanemo Bay?

He has a platform and, as far as I can see, uses it better than 99% of other celebrities, whatever you think of the Falklands issue.

I think violent oppressive regimes are a concern to all of us that want to live in a free and democratic world. We should all condemn such regimes. But the conflict in the Falklands is something completely different and I don't think he needed to go there.

Oh sure, I didn't mean to compare the Falklands with any of those, but either you can comment on other country's issues, or you can't. Maybe he gets it wrong now and then, but better him than some idiot like Charlie Sheen or Charlton Heston.

    Quick question guy.
    Correct me if im wrong.

    - Bought Sessegnon at 6.9
    - Sessegnon is now 7.3
    - 0.4mil increase x50% as its 0.1 for every 0.2 gained.
    - If I transferred him out now, I should get 7.1 for him correct?
    - When I transfer him out, my 0.4 mil in the bank goes to 7.3 which is nice rise at all...

    Debates from GW28 onwards!

    Evra V Evans
Evra has the assurance of starts but hasn't got much attack/bonus potential and is pretty expensive for a max of 6 points, Evans has the value but now Jones and Smalling are back his game time will be limited and miss out on those clean sheet points.

    Ade V VDV
Adebayor has the fitness and is more likely to start but with a strikeforce of RVP Rooney Ba one would have to be sacrificed. VDV usually has hot spells of form so it could be vital to be onboard especially considering his fixtures.

    Valencia V Nani V Young
Valencia has the form and value, Nani can hit the explosive scores and Young is unpredictable, is it worth risking one with all likely to see time on the bench?

    Silva V Yaya
With City fixtures becoming tougher is Silva worth keeping hold of? Consistently delivers points but lacks the explosive scores his price tag justifies, Yaya is underated FPL wise and could deliver similar points at a cheaper budget?

i am thinking of de gea and lindegaard as my keepers when i wildcard

      would cost 10.6m

the plus point is you are gauranteed a utd defender every week

teh minus point being u can only have 1 utd attacker but with rooney being the only one that seems gauranteed of gametime it is an option im looking at

well most decent keeper combos cost 9-9.5m so itd be 1.1-1.6m more but it would gaurantee u a utd defender for the nice run of fixtures so may be worth it

It also blocks 2 United players. I'd want Rooney & Evans for sure, do doubt I'd go that way.

Good luck with it though, Tosey 😀

Certainly a different slant. Given uniteds fixtures not a bad shout, as long as you dont want any more attacking point options?

Evans. should be nailed on for the remainder. he's been their most consistent presence. Evra's attacking potential doesnt warrant an extra 2.6 mil.

Bale. Why isnt he in the mix? Id prefer Ade from the 2, but i dont like "committing" a fwd spot over a mid spot. Ade may be in and out of my squad a couple more times this year.

Rooney. the fact that i have 3 choices for 2 spots is enough to make me want to just pay for rooney as utd coverage and ignore the midfield.

Silva. consistently delivers is all you can ask. no big hauls doesnt matter if he's consistent and at the top of the scoring list for mids at the end of the season. having one less spot in your team to worry about transferring in/out is a blessing.

What makes you think Evans is nailed on with Smalling, Jones returning, Rafael starting some games, and the midfield doing alright (meaning Jones may play in defence rather than midfield)?

i hope i implied it was conjecture and not a statement of fact. I just think he has earned his spot for the remainder of the season. Wouldnt be the first time SAF proved me wrong, wont be the last. 😉

Evra v Evans = Too tough to call but Evra if you have the spare cash.
Ade v VDV = DIE ADEBAYOR DIE. Bale is enough.
Tony V vs Nani vs Young = Valencia as he seems first choice. The other two could be rotated.
Silva v Yaya = Yaya if you're chasing. Silva if you're leading.

Yep for a hit, IF you can afford it ofc.

Enrique->Kompany gives you stability at the back, and almost certain 6x2 pts in the next two gws. So 12 points + some bonuses, attack points MAYBE.
          Sinclair->Sigurdsson, transfer for money.
Fletcher -> Ba, A MUST HAVE TILL GW 37 XD

can you afford fletcher->ba or have you missed that gigantic window? you look like you can get away without needing enrique this week and soon you may want a pool defender again. I got rid of bae and enrique on my wc because of the 6-8 gw run of "bad fixtures". now im already planning on getting at least one of them back soon. stick with that defensive core of bae, enrique and evans. just use one tranny and get fletcher out. P Cisse? Zamora? Yakubu?

    Team for next week:

    Sorensen
    Simpson Kompany Evans
    Bale Silva Valencia Sess
    Aguero(c) RVP Ba

    Subs: Mignolet Moses BAE Caulker

I have 2 FTs and I am currently 88 points behind in my mini league..Is this a time to start looking for more differentials or stick with what I've got? Was thinking of Sess > McLean to free up some £.

Keep trying to score the most points. If the leader has the same team then differentials will be needed but 88 is quite a difference with a good leader.

Differentials right now between me and leader:

Him: N Taylor, Lescott, Dempsey, Welbeck, Dzeko, Raylor, J Enrique, Reo-Coker, Mucha
Me: Kompany, Evans, Caulker, Valencia, Ba, Aguero, Moses, BAE, Mignolet

When I look at that I really think my differentials with his are much stronger! Will keep going with this.

What about Sess > McLean to add another differential given McLeans incredible form?

You've got 9 players different from him, you don't need to worry about more differentials! Like TM says, just do what you think will get you the most points.

Yeah thanks! I didn't actually realise how many differentials I had until I typed them out there I thought our teams were much more similar!

Team look ok for this weekend? Only one area I'm slightly unsure of is play Evans or BAE?

I remember a site before that analysed your team, and told you what transfers to make based on it's own predicted points per player for that week.
Anyone know if that site is still going?
