As Florent Malouda replaced Juan Mata on the 76th minute mark during Chelsea’s Gameweek 25 defeat at Everton, the boos and cries from fans of the away side of “you don’t know what you’re doing” echoed ominously around Andre Villas-Boas’ ears.

The moment poignantly sums up just how frustrating this campaign has been for the London outfit, in which even a Champions League spot is in doubt. It also illustrates just how highly Chelsea fans rate Mata; for many, he has been the team’s best player this season, and in Fantasy terms he is certainly the most reliable source of points, registering 108, the highest of any Blues player.

As fixtures begin to look more enticing over the coming weeks and, with the return of Didier Drogba from the African Cup of Nations to bolster the attack, Mata once again finds himself in our thoughts. Daniel Sturridge offers another, cheaper option of gaining coverage for Chelsea favourable run of fixtures, but he would use up a precious spot in our attacks – places likely to be currently reserved for the likes of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Demba Ba and Sergio Aguero. That leaves Mata as the weapon of choice for those backing Andre Villas-Boas to drag his side out of their recent slump.

Currently ranked as the sixth top midfielder in terms of total points, Mata has scored five times, the same as Manchester City’s David Silva, and notched up eight assists, the same as Tottenham’s Gareth Bale. Based on those returns his price tag of 9.6m would seem fair, but the Spanish midfielder does come with a major health warning.

A closer look at his season shows that, while at home he is capable of impressive Fantasy returns, Mata is inexplicably transformed into an expensive liability when Chelsea hit the road. All three of his double point hauls, including a return of 17 against Wolves in Gameweek 13 and a score of 13 against Manchester United in Gameweek 24, have come at home.

Of his 108 points, 73 have been earned at Stamford Bridge, ranking him alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero and Stoke’s Jon Walters as popular players who simply do not travel well. The highest away tally Mata has achieved was six points at Newcastle in Gameweek 14 – only the second time he managed a score above three on the road.

Those Fantasy managers looking to invest in Mata perhaps need to be brave enough to bench him away as a payoff for his considerable home potential. The rewards of such a bold strategy could prove handsome, given that over the next seven weeks Chelsea have four home games (BOL, wba, STO, mcy, TOT, avl, WIG).

Of course to succeed with such a ploy, Fantasy managers would need an able replacement for Chelsea’s away games. For those who already own Clint Dempsey, it is worth noting that Fulham play at home when Chelsea play away all the way to the end of the season. A somewhat luxurious rotation midfield pairing, no doubt, but, given that Dempsey is another who tends to struggle on the road, it’s one that could ultimately prove dividend for those with budget to spare.

          Hey Bookaholic,

Sorry mate! It boiled down to our lurker intolerance policy. But we've been asking around here about you - and no one knew about you! We also searched the posts from the last 4-5 days and didn't see you at all. Also, we had been constantly posting on FFS requesting you to show up & speak to one of the organizers of the Europa - we didn't get any replies.

Eventually, had to pull the trigger, since we had a few really really interested managers for this position.

Hope you'd understand our premises & continue to support the spirit of the Cup. Sorry, once again! 🙂

    FFS Europa League Preview

    GROUP G

AZ (Count Of Monte Hristo – Rank: 15,143)
After GW16 it appeared all was going swimmingly for the Count. He had reached a season high of 1,512th with very little turbulence along the way. However a bad run of 7 consecutive red arrows followed and that led to him falling to a disgraceful… 17,633rd place??? How many of us can say we have had 7 straight red arrows and still been that high in the rankings? Two green arrows since suggests he has put that blip behind him and still packing a wildcard, he is sure to make a renewed assault on that top 10k. The less said about that 1.2million finish last season though the better.
Key differential = The count may be counting on "Swansealona" to dovetail their beautiful passing game with more Danny Graham goals. He has already pulled the trigger on 2 free transfers though so there is a chance this edge has already been blunted.

    Metalist Kharkiv (1966 - FC Metalheadz – Rank: 102,253)
A quick scan of his past finishes is all you need to know about this particular manager. Two top 50k finishes and a gorgeous 4483rd place in the 2006-07 season suggests we have veteran campaigner on our hands here. In 5 years his worst finish is 123,885th which if you ask me is pretty darn impressive. Interestingly like his rival Count of Monte Hristo, 1966 is still packing his wildcard. Is it possible we may see a WC v WC fight to the death in their GW27 or GW31 games? This could get very interesting.
Key differential = Very hard to pick out risky selections in this uber template team. With only 1 out of the other 3 group members (i.e. seaunicorn) also owning Demba Ba, he could prove to be the most useful player for 1996 in this group.

Austria Wien (Teamzm – Rank: 177,200)
Finally someone in this group who has played their wildcard already! Hanging about the 150k mark since GW13 Teamzm will be hoping to turn his fortunes around – he has had 6 red arrows in the last 9. It’s a fairly unremarkable gameweek history and last season’s 1.1 million finish isn’t too convincing either. He has already pulled the trigger on 2 transfers and is therefore carrying a 4pt hit into the first game, this may well give his opponent reasons to be cheerful. Apparently he has been lifting weights and listening to Ultravox on repeat in preparation for the competition.
Key differential = The Kompany/Richards double act at the back with Dzeko & Fletcher up front will either be his ace in the hole or his Achilles heel.

    Malmo (seaunicorn – Rank: 531,631)
Don’t mess with this guy. He spent time at 72,152 in the rankings. So what if it was gameweek 1? 😛 In fairness it’s been a difficult season for seaunicorn. A 20pt hit in GW11 may have seen him hit an all season low of 1.2million in the rankings but it actually looks like this successfully “stopped the rot” as he accumulated 5 green arrows in the next 6 gameweeks which has propelled him to his familiar surroundings of the 500-600k mark where he has spent most of his time since.
Key differential = Surely seaunicorn will replace Djbril Cisse with one of his two freebies before the next gameweek? Until then his best differential appears to be Jose Enrique.

    A’noon,

Re-post, which of the 2 teams is best with Roo in for Kun in GW 28? All input appreciated!

    A

    –Mignolet–Ruddy–
    –J Evans–BAE–Micah–Kelly–Simpson–
    –Silva–Bale–Dempsey–Valencia (if fit)–(Ferguson)–
    –RVP–Roon–Baa–

    B

    –Mig–Sorenson–
    –J Evans–King (or other 4.8m def) –Micah–Kelly–Simpson–
    –Silva–Bale–Dempsey–Valencia (if fit)–McLean
    –RVP–Roon–Baa–

If Rooney hits one of his purple patches he is FF gold but is a tough call to downgrade one of BAE or McLean. Decisions, decisions…

    Cheers

My head is melting trying to nail down a top 5 players list. This is my copout errr I mean XI in a 4-4-2 formation (Brehme RB Maldini LB) of players I've watched (not live unfortunately, but on the telly, you know what I mean) 😛

    _______________________Buffon_________________

    Andreas Brehme____Cannavaro___Franco Baresi___Paolo Maldini

    Michel Platini____Zidane___Matthäus___Ryan Giggs______

    __________Marco Van Basten__Diego Maradona_______

SUBS: Fat Ronaldo, George Weah, Rui Costa, David Batty, Peter Schmiechel, Phillipe Albert and a risky Matt Le Tiss instead of another defensive fullback.

There. Done. Ish. Apologies to Bergkamp, Gazza, Beardsley, Shearer, Cantona, Gullitt, Rjikaard, Boban, Baggio, Del Piero, Raul etc who I couldnt fit in.

After a poor start, I'm happy with my team so I'm loath to radically change it for one week. But as it stands, I'll only have six playing that week. I'll do MJP to Beausejour this week to make it 7 and then just monitor the situation until week 29. MJP was my luxury punt and he only produced points when I'd benched him against Arsenal.

Yeah, fancy getting kicked out when you registered during the relatively brief window ... while other 'more active' posters didn't even realize the comp was created, let alone register.

I applaud the work and enthusiasm put in by these guys running this thing ... and happy to be a part of it ... but it does strike as a bit harsh this 'cleansing'.

Ah, but you see,it's very difficult to know who's a 'lurker' and who's a less regular poster, so we asked many people several times if they had seen said poster ever before, like Dr.Ennet, and if we got an affirmative then we stuck with them.

I get your point, and: your comp, your rules. It's all good.

I'm just saying that it seems a bit harsh to be kicked for something that wasn't stipulated in the 'join up' postings. I'm a 'deadzoner', mostly ... as I'm East Coast, USA. So, asking people in the opposite time zones if they've heard of me would yield few results.

I just feel for bookaholic. Seems like being picked last for the team ... then booted when someone's brother shows up late.

I myself am a 'deadzoner' 🙂 KE, that's why Me Nino and parm asked in different time zones, but alas! whatever it's still a tragedy. And as stated to 1966, it's everyone's and anyone's ( except lurkers) competitions, if you don't like anything, tell us, we'll try to change it for sure.

Yeah, I decided to pipe down because it's not my competition, but if it's just for regular posters they probably should have mentioned that before people signed up.

I understand the frustration when lurkers pop up in these type of comps, but one guy nearly got kicked out and he'd set up a new grav, name etc - that would've been heartbreaking 🙂

Yep El Nino has organised a UCL Format.

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aul0PglyD-ESdHdYY3JWMllFdmVQZ2JZdzd1dEtQMXc#gid=2

And me,El Nino,Udit and IL have created the Europa League format

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aul0PglyD-ESdF9rOTdUMnMtalNlR1hHajA4N2VTaXc&pli=1#gid=12

Is for the constant posters. There was so much interest we had to kick a few of the unknown players from the Europa League.

a really meaty midfield, great chemistry up front between the salt n vinegar guys, people always say keepers are a bit mad, and a rb following in the footsteps of his cousin kyle

I think the SnV partnership are a bit too similar, you need a Shearer/Sheringham dynamic that Salt n Vinegar Chipsticks and Nice n Spicy Nik Naks would give you. You could always use Squares as an impact sub.

      Ps
Glad there is no place for the most overrated, overhyped, overpriced Andy Carroll of crisps - Kettle Chips.

But I would consider swapping beef hula hoops for Flame Grilled Steak Real McCoys, as meaty midfielders go they don't get much better.
